On with the story!
The sun set. The gargoyles of Avalon broke out of their stone sleep and began to groan. While stone sleep prevented the after effects of imbibing in alcohol, it did nothing to deaden the memories of the night before.
"Oh, my head!" groaned Metatron as he rose up from the drums he was slumped over. "I can't believe I used my head as a drumstick!"
"Someone tell me I didn't do what I think I did!" moaned Donal.
"Aack! Where are my clothes?" yelled Veronica, pulling the sheet she was wrapped in tighter.
"Uriel!" screamed Katherine, holding an empty wineskin in her hand. "What was this doing in your tunic?"
"Um...er...the backstroke?" Katherine grabbed the small gargoyle by the ear and dragged him back to the castle. "Ow! Ow! Easy!"
"Let's get out of here." Jophiel whispered to Aindreas. The two gargoyles stood on the heavy branch they had roosted on, spread their wings and took off into the night sky. Jophiel landed on the beach. Aindreas tackled him, wrestled him to the ground and kissed him. After a long, sensuous kiss of lips and tongues caressing and sucking, Aindreas broke off to breathe and admire his lover's face. Jophiel's face was a beautiful oval shape with skin in a lovely tint of blue. Aindreas ran a finger over Jophiel's brow ridges and up over the three small horns crowning his forehead. Jophiel smiled at the touch. "Katherine once told me they look like a Fleur de Lis."
"What's that?" Aindreas asked dreamily.
"It's a symbol of France, some country in the outside world. Katherine's mother came from there."
"Hard to imagine her as a little girl with a mother looking after her."
"Yes. But, it had to have happened."
"Jophiel, what if she finds out? About us?"
"Oh, she'd probably make us do 'the honorable thing'." Jophiel said with a smile. "Like with Gabriel and Ophelia. Not that I'd mind." Jophiel caressed one of Aindreas' long, green horns. "I love you, Aindreas. I want to be with you forever!"
Aindreas laid down on Jophiel's body and hugged him. "I love you too, Jophiel. It's just, I'm not sure how the Guardians would take this. A male and female in love, they'd expect. This...I don't know."
Jophiel stroked one of Aindreas' light brown locks. "Aindreas, right now, I don't want to be bothered with the Guardians or our rookery siblings. Right now, is us." Jophiel kissed him. "Make love to me, Aindreas. I dreamed about it all day."
Aindreas undid his belt buckle. "I dreamed about you today too!" He removed the loincloth to reveal a green member stirring to life. "We were floating among the stars. Not gliding, floating. We kissed and the universe just spun away into madness. Then, the two of us became one. And it was beautiful." Aindreas stroked Jophiel's thigh. "What did you dream of?"
Jophiel undid his buckle. "I dreamed I made a sculpture of you. And it was my best work." Jophiel removed the loincloth to reveal a semi-errect blue penis. "I reached out and put my hand here." He laid a hand flat against Aindreas' heart. "And suddenly, the stone broke apart and you were there for real! Holding me, kissing me. Like that story Magus told us once. What was it called? Something about a pig."
Aindreas put fingers on Jophiel's lips. "We're not going to think about them, remember?" He stroked Jophiel's member, making it larger and firmer and Jophiel gave a small moan of pleasure. "What do you think would happen if we rubbed them together?"
Jophiel smiled. "It might feel pretty good.
Aindreas straddled Jophiel's hips and joined their cocks together. "Mmmm...Jophiel, that feels so good!" He humped him, loving the feel of sensitive skin brushing together.
"Run your hands over my chest." gasped Jophiel. "I like that."
"Thought you were a virgin." Aindreas teased as his hands caressed Jophiel's torso.
"Ah...well, I touch myself sometimes." Jophiel gave a sigh of pleasure. "I run my hands all over my body and pretend it's you."
Aindreas leaned down and whispered to Jophiel. "I want to watch you do that some time." He thrust his hips harder, making them both moan.
"Oh...only if I can...ah...watch you!" Jophiel grabbed his lover's hips and bucked under him. This was a dream come true. Aindreas' lovely body was pressed against him, their flesh gliding together. Their cocks were creating a delicious spreading heat. Their tails found each other and twined together.
"Oh, Jophiel, I'm going to...Oh...." Aindreas sped up his thrusts, burning with need.
"Do it, Aindreas!" Jophiel urged. "Let me feel you! It'll feel so good!"
Aindreas let out a feral roar as he climaxed, spraying his seed all over Jophiel's lower body. The hot spill made Jophiel let out a roar of his own and shoot out a jet of semen. Both of them panted for air and grinned as they saw their pearly issue mingle on each others' belly and thighs. Aindreas lay full length against his lover and kissed his cheek. "I love you." he sighed. "But, we're both pretty messy."
"How about a dip in the ocean to clean off?"
"I'd like that."
The two stood up and ran out into the waves, hand in hand. They dove into the salty sea spray together and lost themselves in their own magical wonderland. They swam together, making laps around each other before diving in for a kiss or a teasing caress. Aindreas floated on his back, his wings splayed out and looked up at the stars. This was so close to how that day's dream went. He gave a squeal as Jophiel picked him up and tossed him out to sea, only to follow him. They splashed and laughed like they were hatchlings again. Then, they locked eyes and realized childhood was over, but something more promising was in their future. They stood in waist deep water and embraced with both wings and arms. They kissed as moonlight dappled the water.
The two lay in the sand and watched as the moon gradually went from full to a gibbous three-quarters. "You know," said Jophiel. "Magus once told me that in the outside world, the moon doesn't change shape this quickly. It will be full for two or three nights before it starts to wane. Then, after a new moon it waxes into a crescent until it's full again. Takes about 29 days for one cycle."
"Sounds boring." Aindreas commented. "I like watching the moon change shape."
"Remember when we were hatchlings, Aindreas? We'd play on the beach all night. Sometimes, we'd see merchildren and invite them to play, but they'd always swim off. Dolphins were a little more friendly. Sometimes we'd have a clambake and I'd build these beautiful sandcastles."
"And then you'd cry when the waves washed them away."
"Oh, I was only ten! Katherine comforted me and told me to build another, further away from shore. And I seem to remember you crying whenever the water went over your head."
"Well, I nearly drowned in an undercurrent when I was eight. I'm glad Tom was there to pull me out."
"So am I." They nearly kissed again when they were interrupted by the voice of one of their brothers.
"Hey, brothers!" A blue-green male named Noah glided down to them over the dunes. "What are you doing? Taking a moonbath?"
"Ah, we just went for a swim." said Jophiel. It wasn't at all unusual for brothers on Avalon to strip down and go for a swim.
"Well, don't get dressed yet." Noah undid the shell decorated belt around his tunic. "I need you lads to help me check my lobster traps." Noah disrobed. "If I caught at least ten, we'll have enough for a lobster dinner later tonight!" Due to the shape of Noah's face and the fins on his scalp and wings, it was often surmised that Noah had some aquatic gargoyle blood. The three waded out to where Noah had set up some traps for lobsters.
Sure enough, several of the large crustaceans were writhing in the wooden cages. Noah counted them. "Fifteen! We'll put the extra five in the tank until I catch more." They brought the lobsters back to the beach and put their clothes back on. "I brought some string to tie their claws up." Noah said, taking a wad of strings out of a pouch. "Careful, now." The three of them began tying up the claws of the lobsters. "You two shouldn't have left the party so early last night!" Noah said. "Just after you left, Veronica started dancing without her clothes on! Did you ever miss a sight!"
"Pity we missed that." said Aindreas.
"You also missed the cat fight that broke out between Hypatia and Leliela."
"What were they fighting over?" asked Jophiel.
"Why, me!" Noah said proudly. Aindreas and Jophiel rolled their eyes and went back to tying up the claws. "Uriel's in trouble though. While Tom and Katherine were sleeping off hangovers, Magus was on clean-up. You know, he's never been much for parties. He tried to get Veronica dressed, but she went to sleep with her arm positioned so he couldn't. Made do with wrapping a sheet around her. He found the wine skin in Uriel's tunic. He's writing lines right now and he's restricted to the castle for a fortnight. You know, Uriel's little pranks are funny sometimes. Bucket of water over the door, forgivable. Frogs in the tea kettle, hilarious. But spiking the punch with fey wine was just crossing the line!"
"Fey wine?" asked Jophiel.
"He found a casket of it in the cellar." Noah explained. "To be fair, he probably didn't know it for what it was. Normally fey wine knocks humans and gargoyles out for weeks. Years, some people say. It was cut with punch, so it just made us all act like a bunch of ninnies. I wonder if it's true that it gives some the temporary gift of prophesy."
"Why?" asked Jophiel. "Anyone start prophesying fires, floods and famine as soon as we were gone?"
"Well, Sandy said some odd things. Angela paused in hugging and kissing everyone to tease her about her nickname. Angela declared she would clobber the first male who called her 'Angie'. Sandy laughed and said 'No, you're gonna marry him!' They both fell over laughing, though it wasn't that funny."
"They were drunk." said Aindreas. "They probably found everything funny."
"And then Sandy stood on a table and made all sorts of odd proclamations." Noah continued. "Something about how we should beware the blue demon with hair of flame who would bring the lightning down upon us. Also something about a dark woman who kept fire and thunder in a rod of iron who would awaken the Sleeping King. Very ridiculous stuff. Then, she started crying and shouting out for Magus. Sandy doesn't remember a thing now. Probably for the best."
"Let's hope those 'prophesies' were only the ravings of a drunken lass." said Jophiel.
They carried the lobsters into the castle. "Angela!" Noah called out to his lavender sister. "Boil the water and draw the butter! We're having lobster!"
"Noah, you know I don't like preparing food that screams while I'm cooking it." she said, laying aside her book to look apprehensively at the ugly creatures.
"Angela, I told you." said Noah "They're not screaming. It's just the shells popping."
"Can't you- I don't know- snap their necks first or something?"
"Angela," Noah said patiently. "Lobsters don't have necks."
"It just seems inhumane to boil them alive."
"Oh, I know!" said Aindreas. "We'll put little blindfolds on them first!"
Angela smiled at her brother. "Well, since Uriel's grounded, it looks like you'll have to be the joker." She turned back to Noah. "I'll get the water ready. But, can't you just smother them first or something?"
"Angela," Noah sighed. "They are /aquatic/."
"I'll smother 'em!" said Jophiel. "Smother 'em in butter!"
"Watch out, Aindreas!" Angela said with a smile. "Someone else wants to fill the joker job! Jophiel, be a dear and help me fetch some water?" They left.
"Nice girl." said Noah. "But far too soft."
Outside at the well, Angela lowered a bucket. "I'm sorry if I did anything to embarrass you last night, Jophiel." she told him. "I barely knew what was going on! Poor Veronica is still humiliated. I'll have to talk her into joining us for dinner."
"Yeah." Jophiel heard the splash of the bucket hitting the water and began turning the crank on the pulley. "Uriel probably went a bit too far last night."
"It's a good thing you and Aindreas were sober enough to move your statue." She removed the bucket of water from the hook and replaced it with an empty one. "It would be a shame to have something that beautiful broken. Where did you head off to after that?" Jophiel nearly lost his grip on the crank. "After you moved the statue, no one saw you for the rest of the night."
"Oh, uh, Aindreas and I just went for a swim. Yeah, that's where Noah found us. At the beach."
Angela cocked an eyebrow and laced the two buckets on a pole. Something told her Jophiel was hiding something. What? "Jophiel, you know you can tell me anything, right?" she said.
Jophiel lowered another bucket and tried to think of a way out of this one. "Yeah, I-I know, Angela. We were just, you know, talking about stuff. Like how we used to play on the beach as hatchlings. Remember?"
Angela smiled. "I remember. I remember Tom would have to drag Noah back to land so he wouldn't turn to stone out in the water. And I remember after Katherine told us that story about the Loch Ness Monster, you sculpted one out of sand."
"Aw, you helped." Jophiel said as he drew up another bucket.
"Some other hatchlings and I gathered some sand for you." Angela replaced the bucket. "You did all the shaping and sculpting. It was beautiful. Pity it washed away during the day. Jophiel, you ever wish there was a way to take a moment and freeze it forever so you'd always have it to look at later?"
Jophiel smiled as he thought of Aindreas. "Yeah. Lots of times."
"Like, last night, it would've been nice to have a permanent image of what Gabriel and Ophielia looked like in their wedding clothes," she mused as Jophiel turned the crank. "Or Gabriel kissing the bride. I'd like a picture of me in that dress. And pictures of us as hatchlings would be cute. Or as eggs. I've never seen a gargoyle egg. Do you suppose they have a way to freeze moments in the outside world, Jophiel?"
"That would take some incredible sorcery." he said, hefting a bucket to the ground. "We have four buckets full. Will we need more?"
"Six buckets should be enough to cook 39 lobsters." Angela said, putting on another bucket.
"You don't need to cook whole lobsters for the beasts, you know." Jophiel said, as Angela lowered the bucket. "Quiteria, Boudicca and Perseus will be content with scraps."
"Not with the way they eat." A splash, and the two traded places at the crank. "Jophiel, do you think there might be other gargoyles out there? Maybe with eggs?"
"Angela, I don't bother myself with anything that isn't here and now." He replaced the buckets. "There, that should be the last one."
"Aren't you a little curious?" Angela asked as she lowered the bucket. "I thought you of all people would like to see the cathedrals of Paris Katherine told us about. She says they're decorated with all sorts of statues of gargoyles." At the sound of the splash, Jophiel took the crank. "And stained glass and tapestries." Angela continued as she fixed the buckets onto the pole. "And- and think of all the books that have been written in a thousand years time! Plus, wouldn't you like to see Wyvern Castle? Where we all came from?" Jophiel just shrugged and gave her the last bucket. "Maybe...maybe someone's found a way to make the castle rise above the clouds by now."
"Angela," Jophiel said with a weary sigh. "Look at our castle." Angela did. "Wyvern was about the same size. Now, do you honestly think there's any way something that big could rise among the clouds?"
"Maybe...a levitation spell?"
"It would have to be one hell of a spell." Jophiel said as he shouldered a pole carrying four water buckets. Angela took up the smaller one. "Dreams and imagination are all well and good, Angela, but your head needs to come down from the clouds some time."
"You can't tell me to stop dreaming, Jophiel." Angela said with a smile. They brought the water inside just in time to meet up with Camaela. "On your way to the garden, Camaela?" Angela asked the pink gargoyle as Jophiel started filling the cauldron.
"It needs some weeding." said Camaela. "And I think the watercress is ready to be picked."
"Great! Can you gather enough for a salad? We're having lobster. While they're boiling, Katherine and I will bake some bre-Jophiel, cut that out!" Angela laughed as Jophiel snuck up on her and tickled her. He stopped to take her hand and kiss her cheek.
"I'll leave you two alone!" Camaela giggled as she left.
"What brought that on?" Angela asked Jophiel.
"Oh, just wanted to show some affection for one of my favorite sisters." he murmured into her ear as he hugged her.
"Silly!" She pushed playfully at his chest. "Fill the cauldron. I'll go tell Noah that if he really wants lobster, he can throw them screaming into boiling water himself."
Jophiel poured in the last bucket and set the cauldron over the fire. He turned to see Aindreas with his arms crossed and a rather angry look on his face. "Aindreas! How long have you been there?"
"Long enough." he said bitterly. "Thought Angela wasn't your type." He started to turn away.
"Aindreas, wait!" Jophiel ran after him and grabbed his wing. "Please, if you love me, listen to me."
As hurt and angry as Aindreas was, he knew in his heart he still loved Jophiel. "Fine. Explain then."
"Aindreas, we have to tread carefully." said Jophiel. "If I thought it was safe, that our love would be accepted, I'd shout it from the turrets of the castle. I'd ask Tom to forge another pair of bracelets and vow myself to you as Gabriel and Ophelia did."
"You...you would?" Aindreas' anger was starting to melt.
"But, Aindreas, we know it can't be like that. To keep the secret, I had Camaela see me flirt a bit with Angela. You know how fast rumors fly around here. Angela's not going to be hurt!" he quickly added. "As soon as Camaela was gone, I called her 'sister' and she called me 'silly'."
"I don't like hiding this, Jophiel." Aindreas touched his shoulders. "I thought I was going to burst keeping the secret of how much I love you. Now, I still have to hide it."
"Not from me, love, never from me." Jophiel hugged Aindreas, wrapped his wings around him and kissed his cheek. "Aindreas, I would not be offended if you at least attempted to flirt with a female or two. It would make things more convincing."
Aindreas sighed and laid against Jophiel's chest. "Very well, love. But I won't enjoy it."
A/N: I thought I had this chapter up! Turned out I forgot to add a chapter title. Also, since an hour on Avalon means a day goes by in the real world, I thought it would make sense if the moon viewed from Avalon seemed to change phase every few hours. Greg Weisman has said that the stars look a bit different.
