Two Days Later
“That . . . that doesn’t look good,” Human muttered as he gazed into the distance, and saw several flashes of light as they flew through the sky.
“Now . . . now might be a bad time for a visit,” Phantom said weakly, and he hung his head.
“Probably, but maybe we could at least take a look.”
“It’s not like we can do anything about it, though,” Phantom turned his head away, his face sad, and the one in his arms shrugged.
“So, I’ll turn us invisible and we can watch. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a ghost battle,” he reached up and gently touched the other boy’s cold cheek. “I . . . I know it hurts not to be able to fight, but I’d like to just watch, please?” He pleaded shamelessly, though weakly, and the Phantom knew he couldn’t refuse.
“Fine, but if you tire yourself out so badly we go visible, I’m so not covering for you.” He smiled briefly, and was answered with an equally brief smile from his companion.
“I’m cool, dude. Besides, you’ve been taking most of the brunt of the trip.”
A moment later, they went intangible, and silently flew toward the flashing lights. When they were close enough without being too close, they watched in surprise as a portal opened up above the old Fenton Works place. They looked at the ground, and stared, almost in shock, as they saw four adults they knew to be Valerie, Tucker, Sam, and Jazz, as they used several obviously upgraded Fenton weapons, and shot at several ghosts who were pouring out from the portal.
“Skulker,” Human pointed, and the battle-ready Ghostly Hunter came through also, his guns blazing. However, they were blazing at the ghosts as they came through, and one by one, they flicked out of existence.
“That’s new,” Phantom commented calmly, though his already pale face went ashen. “It looks like they’re actually being vaporized . . .”
“Not vaporized exactly," Human shook his head. “Dad had the idea a while ago to make a weapon that will not only catch ghosts, but slam them back into the Ghost Zone on contact. It would completely negate the need for the Fenton Thermos and save time on ghost catching. I guess they finally made a working model of it. But what Skulker’s doing with it is beyond me. In fact, it looks like they’re actually working together . . .”
“Who’s that?” Phantom asked, and pointed, though he never let go of his charge, and they watched as a tall, blond man ran up to Sam, handed her a new gun, then quickly kissed her on the lips. She smiled and pointed the new gun at a ghost, handed the old one to the blond, and the ghost was disintegrated, even as the blond blew away his own ghost.
“I . . . I guess she’s moved on,” Human said, his voice low. “And believe it or not, I think that might be Dash.”
“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” Phantom said, as he looked down in concern.
“No, I knew things had changed,” he sighed. “After all, our minds have matured even though our bodies didn’t. I didn’t really expect the others not to change. I . . . I guess it just hurt to see it, is all,” he inhaled, and a coughing spell shook his body.
“We’re going to have to get you inside soon,” Phantom frowned worriedly, and Human nodded, even as Phantom shivered, and flickered briefly.
“And we have to get you on the ground. You’re going to run out of energy soon.”
“Oh, crap!” Phantom suddenly exclaimed as a ray winged its way toward them, and just missed them by inches, as he instinctively. He turned in mid-air, and watched as the older adults he quickly recognized as Jack and Maddie Fenton suddenly exploded on the scene in a new and vastly improved version of the RV, and started blasting at the ghosts as well.
“Hmm,” Human said with a sad smile. “I see Dad’s aim hasn’t improved any . . .” Suddenly, his eyes opened wide, and he stared as two ghosts all but snuck out the portal, immediately turned invisible, and disappeared from the fighters’ view . . . if they’d seen them at all.
“Did you see that, Human?” Phantom asked, suddenly alert, and Human nodded.
“Yeah, but I don’t think anyone else did.”
As if to prove him right, they suddenly reappeared behind the adult Fentons, and the two in the sky knew that no one would be able to turn fast enough to shoot before the ghosts did, and they looked at each other.
“We can’t stand by and let it happen,” Human rasped as he swallowed, and Phantom nodded.
“But we only get one shot at this,” Phantom warned. “You know we don’t have enough energy to do a second blast, and you know what it does to you when we blend . . .”
“Not to mention the fact we’re going to have to get out of here as fast as possible,” Human nodded. “We can’t let them know we’re still alive . . .” He looked at Phantom and his smile was actually amused. “Well, one of us is.”
“You know, that was old the first time you said it.”
“Not to me,” Human chuckled, and sighed as he felt Phantom’s arms tighten around him, and he nodded. “Yeah, I’m ready,” he whispered, and focused his gaze on Phantom’s face. He let them go visible, and after a moment, they blurred, but when they reappeared, they formed a very fuzzy ‘person’.
“Okay,” the ‘person’ said in Phantom’s voice, even as the outer lines wavered. “Here we go. One blast and then we get out of here.”
“Ready,” Human’s voice answered, and the ‘person’ raised it’s badly waving arms. His scarred face twisted with the obviously painful effort it took to focus on getting the body stabilized. A moment later, a sickly, yellow-green, badly wavering beam leaped from his hands, and though it completely missed its mark, it warned the others on the ground, and let them know that something was behind them.
“Let’s go!” The wavering being spun in midair, and literally flew away from the scene, but not before those on the ground had gotten a look at the person, brief though it was, and several jaws just about hit the pavement.
However, they had to deal with the malevolent ghosts first, and with a renewed vigor, did exactly that. Because of that, however, they missed the fact that the ‘person’ actually split apart, and both halves dropped out of the sky like rocks.
