“Talking”
‘Thoughts’
‘Voice’
Terror was reflected on Feral’s altered face as she stared up at the scientists behind the glass window. She needed to get out of here. She struggled against her restraints but they were made of strong chains....unbreakable.
She stopped fighting and hung her head down causing her fall of ebony hair to hide her face. Escaping the chains seemed out of the question at the moment and besides even if she had managed to break free. Where was she in the first place? She didn’t even know if she was still in Megakat City. Then there was her new shape......why had they done this to her and how long did it last? Until she could answer those questions she had no where to go.
‘Kat’s Alive! Wonder if this is permanent?’ Feral thought having mixed feelings about that. She should be feeling outraged, shocked, sorrowful at the loss of her male identity or something but instead she felt......right.....like all these years she’d been trapped in the wrong sex and now everything fit. That was just too weird to dwell on at the moment.
She was pulled from her whirling thoughts by a rolling sound. She raised her head and stared in open mouthed shock. Two white doors had opened and a cannon of some sort had been rolled in and was pointed straight at her. Fear bolted through her as she struggled frantically against her chains in terror. Her panic did not free her only created bruises on her wrists from her violent struggle.
“Stop! What do you think you’re doing?!” She yelled at the ones behind the window her new voice still a shock to her ears. The scientists ignored her.
At a new sound she turned her head back to the canon. It appeared to be getting ready to fire sending new flashes of panic and fear through her. She cried and screamed and struggled. ‘Help! Help me, please! Someone! Anyone! Help me!’ Feral mentally cried out to the heavens. She’d never felt so helpless in her life. Not even the humiliation the SWAT Kats caused her was anything like this.
‘It’s okay, I’m here. I’ll help you.’ A strange voice said soothingly inside her mind causing her to freeze in shock.
“W-Who said that?!” Feral asked aloud looking around her wildly. The scientists weren’t even looking at her so it couldn’t have been them.
‘A friend who can help you. You just need to listen and do what I say.’ It said again calmly. It sounded hollow like an echo.
“A friend? Don’t make me laugh. I don’t have any friends…and what kind of friend are you if you don’t show yourself?” Feral asked scathingly, thinking for a moment she was going crazy.
The voice laughed, ‘That’s because I’m a part of you and you’re a part of me. We are one and the same you and I.’
“That can’t be.”
Proving her wrong the bright white room vanished from her sight completely, to be replaced by a strange dark void. Feral could still feel her arms were chained to the wall yet here she was somewhere else. As she looked around a strange eerie light filled the place. Across from her a figure stood with dark brown skin. The face was covered by a white wrapping allowing one unfeeling gold eye to look down at her as her dark brown fur ears and tail moved a little. The figure began to walk forward till she was in just an arm’s length away. The figure knelt down to one knee and raised a paw to pet Feral on the head as if she was kitten.
‘It is. I have always been here with you. But you could never understand me....till now.’ It assured her.
“You’re that strange voice I’ve always heard but could never clearly understand.”
‘Yes, but now you’re what you should have been. But you must listen now, there’s not much time. There is a power inside of you. A power that needs....no......wants to be unleashed.’ It told her firmly.
“A power? I have no such thing.” Feral said confused.
‘Oh, yes you do. You felt it before, dear. That burning uncontrollable, melting feeling. But…you could never let it out could you? Always trapped inside of you, growing stronger with each passing day since your little fight with that kat kitten.’ The voice informed her.
Feral went silent and blinked suddenly she was once more staring at the floor of her prison the white color almost blinding her. The voice was right, ever since that fight she had felt a strange power building within her. Like something was moving, trying to get out but couldn’t. She had thought it was simply her anger or some other feeling that she always pushed down and tried to forget. But as the feeling grew stronger and felt more and more like something was trying to get out, she knew it was something much more.
‘Could it be telling the truth?’ Feral wondered. “If…what you said is true. Why couldn’t I use it before? Why now? What do you have to gain from it?” Feral asked, angry and suspicious.
‘Because your body was wrong for it. Your old body trapped the power and prevented it from being yours to use. But now you’re how you should have been at birth and the power is yours to command. As for what I have to gain.......the power to change things......you and I together.....even change things to what you want them to be in Megakat City.” It explained.
“Huh? What are you talking about?” Feral said, her eyes going wide.
‘You didn’t think I knew about it did you? That desire you’ve been hiding since kitten hood.’ It said, dead certainty in its voice.
“I said I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Feral shouted, unwilling to think about that.
‘Fine, I’ll let it go…for now. But now you must do as I say. Reach inside of you. Feel those same emotions that you felt before and draw that power out. Hurry! You don’t have much time.’ The voice said urgently.
Feral lifted her head up and saw the cannon then looked over at the scientists. They were looking at her expectantly. A chill raced over her. They were preparing to fire. Frantic, she tried to clear her mind of her fear and concentrate on that feeling of something moving within her. For a moment nothing seemed to happen. Then suddenly she felt pressure like a pair of strong paws were grabbing her head in a vice.
Trying to escape the pressure she felt a wave of numbness spread over her and into the air surrounding her causing her hair to rise. A strange whistling sound filled her ears for a moment then was gone. She hadn’t realized she closed her eyes until she opened them to see twenty-four ghostly paws extended past her body and just hanging there in the air.
“What are they?” Feral asked staring at them in astonishment.
‘They are mental paws created by your mind. You use them to defend yourself. All you have to do is concentrate. This is our power and we can change the world and make it ours with it. You and I have more then enough power to do this!’ The voice said, sounding eerily proud.
“What?” Feral said this sounded too much like the megalomaniacs that constantly try to take over Megakat City.
Before she could ask anything more she heard the cannon fire. A heavy metal ball came screaming at her at high speed. She gaped at it in horror.
‘Stop it!’ The voice bellowed in her mind.
“How?!” Feral asked but even as she asked she was closing her eyes and lowering her head at that moment. She reacted as if she was going to use her real paws and extended her mental ‘paws’ to deflect the metal ball and throw it back.
Immediately the ghostly, ash gray ‘paws’ moved outwardly catching the cannon ball some four meters away. The ball stayed in midair for just a second before it was thrown back at a much higher rate of speed then when it was fired. It hit the far wall past the cannon making a hole twice its size.
The scientists behind the window gaped in amazement and tried to analyze what just occurred. The female that had observed Feral in the tank was a Ragdoll Kat by the name of Kate Higgins. Her intense blue eyes stared at number seventeen in admiration.
Her short blue-black hair came to her neckline just sweeping the collar of her lab coat. Under it she wore a tight yellow long sleeved shirt with a pale purple skirt that went past her knees. Next to her was her boss Dave Wittenberg a white furred Persian Kat, red and white bicolored with blue-green eyes. He had very short brown hair and was wearing a salmon pink shirt with blue tie and dark gray pants. His eyes were glowing with excitement as he turned to give orders.
“Tell Director Jason that number seventeen’s powers have just awakened and that we will begin testing now.” He instructed
“Sir, how long will the testing take?” Another scientist asked.
“Until she loses consciousness.“ Dr. Wittenberg said coolly showing no feelings of regret for what was planned for the poor female specimen
“Um…sir, may I ask why?” The younger scientist asked obviously uneasy about what they were doing.
Dr. Wittenberg smirked to himself as he looked out the window. The youngster couldn’t see his expression. He knew why the tom asked the question he was new and didn’t know about their project that well. He would learn or be replaced.
“We’re testing her strength and reach of her mental ‘paws’. Each Savannah’s abilities differ from one another.” Dr. Higgins explained blandly having no sympathy for the bleeding heart tom.
“Now, now, Kate. Don’t be too hard on him, he is new after all.” Dr. Wittenberg said in a fake gentle tone along with a fake smile.
The tom smiled hesitantly behind Wittenberg thinking that Dave was being understanding about how he felt about this seemingly barbaric method of testing. He returned to his work.
Once Dr. Wittenberg was sure the young tom’s mind was back at work, he dropped his fake smile and replaced it with a scowl. He hated breaking in new workers especially ones like the tom. It always made testing so much harder then it really needed to be with all the ones like him voicing their concern for the subjects. But his concerns won’t last long once he learns just how dangerous these creatures were. He pushed his annoyance from his mind and barked some new orders.
“Increase the weight of the balls incrementally and continue the test repeatedly till we break through those ‘paws’ of hers.”
As for Feral, she gradually opened her eyes when she realized nothing had struck her. Her golden eyes observed the metal ball was now on the other side of the room having made a considerable dent in the wall. Breathing heavily she noted her mental ‘paws’ were holding steadily before her ready to prevent another strike.
“This...is....my power?” She whispered hesitantly awe on her face.
She received no answer except for the sound of the cannon firing once more. This time Feral kept her eyes open and watched as she consciously moved her mental ‘paws’ to block the ball and toss it back. But as soon as she sent it back another was being fired at her. For an unknown length of time the balls were being fired at her rapidly and repeatedly. And something else was happening. She began to notice the balls seemed to be getting heavier and heavier until she couldn’t do more than block them. They began to pile up before her.
Sweat dripped down her forehead as she fought to keep from being struck. Her so called ‘friend’ had been silent ever since the attack had begun and now she was becoming exhausted. She didn’t know how long she would be able to hold out but she was afraid she was going to find out very soon.
It soon became harder to block the balls and she was forced to find other ways to keep them from striking her. She sort of pushed the ball to one side as one would do in a game of pool. That worked for a while but the barrage never stopped and the inevitable happened.
Just before her strength gave out she blocked the next cannon ball by forcing it away. The ball hit the wall about two feet away from her body. She had to move her foot away just as it fell to the floor and rolled off. They were coming closer and she felt panic seize her.
The next shot finally managed to break through her protection smashing into her right shoulder, her scream of anguish pain filling the room. It tore her flesh and muscles open, shattering her shoulder bone. Blood spilled outward in a spray pattern covering her entire right side and the wall behind her.
The ball wasn’t done causing damage. When it fell from hitting her shoulder and the wall, it dropped onto her thigh, breaking the bone, spraying more blood all over her lap sending her screaming once more.
When she could speak, her body shaking from the trauma, she shrieked at them, “Stop! Why are you doing this to me? Please no more!” She begged.
Watching dispassionately Dr. Wittenberg hummed to himself bringing his paw to his chin as he thought. He paid scant attention to the female’s pleas.
“Start the test again from the beginning.” Dr. Wittenberg ordered.
The test began again as ordered but Feral was too injured and too exhausted to prevent the cannon balls from striking her. The wall was soon painted with her blood and she was unable to scream any more.
The test ended only minutes after it was begun leaving Feral damaged from top to bottom. The walls and floor were covered in her blood. She was barely aware as she felt the blows that made sickening ‘squishy’ sounds as they hit her. Not able to take anymore and suffering from major blood loss she finally past out.
What was more horrific about it all were the scientist hadn’t even registered the subject was unconscious until the fifteenth cannon strike.
“Alright, release number seventeen. Maile, Brian go into the room and bring her out.” Dr. Higgins order briskly causing two other toms to jump at her sharp tone.
The toms moved toward the elevator doors that were secured. Maile pressed the button to open them and he and Brian stepped through. As they walked toward the bloodied subject they heard the cannon being pulled away and the chains on the subject being released.
Feral’s body simply slipped to its side, bonelessly. Grabbing her arms both toms pulled her up and dragged her across the floor without regard for her injuries. They pulled her into the elevator and went back up. When the door opened, a gurney was brought up by another member of the team.
“Put her on the gurney. The medical team will take over now.” Dr. Higgins told them.
They did as they were told lifting her up then dropping her onto the rolling bed. The medical team rushed her up to surgery to fix whatever bones had been broken and sew up her other wounds. They didn’t give her any pain meds or anesthesia feeling that was just a waste for someone they considered just a thing to be used.
As Dr. Higgins turned around to follow she noticed the young tom was watching with a concerned look on his face that was mixed with disgust at what had just happened. She growled quietly. She knew the young tom was about to ask more stupid questions.
"Don't worry about the subject. They have unbelievable healing abilities that are greater than our own. Within a week she'll be back here ready for more testing."
"Healing abilities?" The young tom asked in surprise.
"Yes. Broken bones for us normally take up to four weeks to heal but for them it takes only hours to days. Have no pity for them. They are a powerful and deadly species that we must learn all we can about to protect our kind from them. So don’t worry about her." Dr. Higgins said bluntly then turned to speak with Dr. Wittenberg.
As for Feral, she stayed unconscious during the repair work done one her body. Afterward, she was taken to a recovery room with her arms, legs and mid section tied down in case she woke up though there was really no chance of that since they had given her sleeping drugs to keep her under.
Feral spend a whole week in the recovery room before being sent back to the white room where testing began again. Days soon passed into weeks with the same cruelty abuse testing at the paws of the so called doctors and scientists. The medics added their own brand of cruelty performing experimental surgery and testing drugs on her whether she was awake or not.
For Feral, there seemed to be no end in sight from the brutal treatment. She was a guinea pig and was treated as such. No one knew where she was apparently since no one had rescued her. She fell into despair and lost all hope of ever leaving this place of hell. For all she knew, her enforcers had already searched Megakat City for her but wasn't aware she was no longer there. So much time had passed, she was probably suspected of being dead by now, she certainly wished she was.
She prayed the city she'd given her adult life to protect would survive under the incompetent paws of Steele and as much as she hated them, she hoped the SWAT Kats could keep themselves alive to carry on the fight because the city was doomed by all the mismanagement of the Mayor and the favoritism of Ms. Briggs that chose them over supporting the enforcers. She hoped they didn't learn the hard way that the lack of cooperation and financial support would allow the criminals to take the city out from under them.
Elsewhere in the facility, a young she-kat named Helena Taylor walked down a charcoal gray hallway. She had long straight black hair that reached to her waist. Her blue eyes looked around warily as she held onto some files tightly to her chest. Her shoes clicked on the royal blue floor making them sound like thunder in the deserted hall.
Her pale fur color stood on end as she walked faster. This part of the laboratory was always too eerie to her for some reason. Director Jason told her that they were doing a lot of testing behind the many doors. What kind of testing it was Helena didn’t know nor wanted to as she passed a steel door painted lime green with the number thirty on it. Each door was given a certain color and number showing where each test subjects was and what teams were working with it.
She pushed her squared glasses up her nose pausing for a moment to look around. She wore a long sleeved white shirt with a red tie and a brown vest paired with a long black skirt that reached her ankles. Director Jason had sent her down here again to deliver some files to a team that was doing testing on subject number five.
“Why couldn’t the Director come down here and do it himself? It not like anyone down here likes me.” Helena muttered to herself.
She look around again to check the numbers and noted she was reaching the lower numbers finally. Helena was sent down here periodically to deliver folders, reports, and messages to the various scientists. She was never allowed into the rooms themselves, however. She would knock warning them she was there, the doors would open and someone would greet her quickly, take what she’d brought and wait until she left before opening the door again and going back to whatever they were doing.
It made her wonder why she had taken on this secretary job in the first place. The people here were odd and made her uneasy. ‘It’s because we needed the money.’ She reminded herself with a sigh of resignation. She and her twin needed to pay off some very large debts their father had left them due to a gambling problem he’d had.
Her identical twin, Cindy Taylor ran a bookstore back in their tiny hometown paying off the debts little by little till she, Helena, had found this job that paid even better and moved them out of debt faster.
However, it had a stringent rule that the workers must live on site. They could not go home for the duration of their contract. Helena hated that as she missed her sister. But she really couldn't complain about the accommodations.
The company provided them with two apartment buildings. They were very comfortable studio size rooms, fully furnished. A dining hall, laundry mat, day spa, recreation room, mini pub, library, small screening room to watch movies and swimming pool had been provided to keep the employees happy. It was very like a miniature town.
What the employees didn't know was the company wanted to keep a lid on their secrets by limiting their workers access to the outside world. Living on site insured they could monitor everyone's behavior with security cameras located everywhere but so discrete the workers were not even aware of them. Thus the company could ensure no word of what they were doing in the test labs would get out to the authorities causing the release of the Savannahs which would be the end of Kat kind.
Not knowing any of this, Helena continued with her job. Sighing she was about to turn another corner when her sensitive ears picked up the sound of someone singing.
Helena blinked in surprise. She’d never heard anyone sing down here before. The voice was so beautiful. So captivated was she by the voice and the song it sang that she couldn’t resist following it to it source.
She reached another of the large painted doors. It was sky blue with a white number seventeen on it. She could hear the voice easier now. It sounded so tragic and sorrowful, ending all too soon.
‘Oh, no, don’t stop now.’ Helena thought, wanting to hear more. Looking around quickly and seeing no one, Helena pulled out her access card and swiped it through the key reader attached to the wall at the side of the door.
‘At least I have a reason now to use it.’ She whispered to herself then put her card back into her coat pocket.
The door opened letting her walk into the dim lit room. She looked around nervously. To her left was a window through which she could see a bright light. The blue room she stood in was filled with computers. Taking a few more steps into the small room, she cautiously moved closer to the window. Staring through the window to the floor, she gasped in horror. A strange looking female was sitting on the floor and was chained to the wall. She was hurt badly as there was blood running down her body to pool on the floor. She held the files tighter against her as she stared transfixed.
After standing there for some minutes she shook herself and looked for a way into the room then spotted the controls for the elevator. She was about to reach out for the button when the female inside the room began to sing again.
“You are here alone again
In your sweet insanity
All too calm, you hide yourself from reality
Do you call it solitude? Do you call it liberty?
When all the world turns away to leave you lonely
The fields are filled with desires
All voices crying for freedom
But all to soon they will fade away
There’s only you to answer you forever
In blinded mind you are singing
A glorious hallelujah
The distant flutter of angels
They’re all too far, too far to each for you
I am here alone again
In my sweet serenity
Hoping you will ever find me in any place
I will call it solitude
When all my songs fade in vain
Fly my voice, for away to eternity.”
The song and voice faded away bit by bit making Helena draw back. She brought her paw to her face wiping away the tears that had fallen. Clenching the files she thought about going into the room for a moment and talking with the fem. She was startled when her cell phone rang. Shakily, she pulled it from her coat pocket.
“Hello? Oh, Director! Um…yes, I just delivered the files. Yes, yes, I’m on my way back. Okay, right way sir…bye.” Helena said sighing in relief for some reason as she hung up.
Looking around the room a moment more, Helena quickly left the room. She hurried down the hall to deliver the folder before she was caught in a lie.
Meanwhile unknown to Helena, Feral had seen her shadow flitting past the window. When the she-kat had looked through the window, Feral had been able to see her out of the corner of her eye. She’d never seen this she-kat before. It didn’t matter. Feral had ignored her presence and sang to comfort herself. It was all that was left to her in this terrible place.
But she couldn’t push the image of the she-kat completely from her mind. The female wasn’t one of the group of scientists and doctors she was unhappily familiar with.
“I wonder who she is.” Feral asked aloud.
‘Forget about her. She doesn’t care about you nor does anyone else around here. Its just like everyone else back at Megakat City. They’re all happy you’re gone and you know it! It leaves them free to do whatever they want to do now.’ The voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts.
“You’re right. If anyone cared about me…they would have tried harder to find me. To look for me.” Feral growled unhappily in agreement.
‘That’s right. But they didn’t, did they?’ The voice said with a sneer.
“No.” Feral muttered heavily then everything became quiet again. The voice had left her once more. Knowing now was the time to rest Feral closed her eyes and forced herself to sleep ignoring the pain and blood. She would need all her strength to survive another day.
It took Helena two days to get up the nerve to try and visit the odd female. It was late in the day as she pretended to leave but snuck out of her officeinstead and slipped down to the lab rooms. She was careful to not let anyone see her even though most had left for the day.
She walked down the familiar hallway and made for the door marked number seventeen. Finding it quickly she swiped her card in the reader and slipped into the lab. Looking in the window she saw that the female was still there and still chained to the wall only this time there was fresh blood and new wounds.
Not hesitating this time, Helena quickly made her way over to the elevator and pressed the button. The doors opened letting the white furred she-kat to step in. The elevator took her down and in seconds, opened again. She blinked at the brightness of the room as she stepped in. She walked about halfway across the room stopping in shock and nausea at what had been done to the dark brown skinned female.
“Are…you alright?” Helena asked softly though she felt stupid for asking. ‘Of course she’s not! Look at her.’
When she didn’t get an answer, Helena walked closer. She winced as she saw the black and blue bruises on the female’s wrists. Without thinking Helena rushed over and began to try and unchain her.
“What…do you…think…you’re doing?” Feral asked making Helena jump and let go of the chains to stare down at her.
“Ah…well, you see. I saw your bruises…and I thought I should unchain you and take a look at them.” Helen said suddenly feeling very shy and embarrassed for being caught.
“You can’t.” Feral said flatly.
“Give me chance. I can probably get them to unlock.”
“No, you can’t. The locks are controlled from the main room. Besides, after a while…my arms go numb so I can’t feel anything.” Feral said eyeing the strange she-kat.
“But why? Why would they do such a thing to you?” Helena asked in dismay.
‘As if she didn’t know! What a liar she is. Get rid of her, she’s just like all the others.’ The voice said with a sneer and a thinly disguised order.
“Oh sure! As if you didn’t know what goes on behind these doors.” Feral voice dripped scorn. She concentrated and made her mental ‘paws’ appear just behind the she-kat planning to kill her if she was lying. She had no love for any of these creatures any more.
“But I don’t! I only took this job because I need the money to pay off my father’s gambling debts. I’m just a secretary.” Helena explained trying to get Feral to believe her.
“Is that so?” Feral growled still suspicious.
“The doctors and scientists around here never let me into the rooms. They would always step out and close the doors behind them before I could see anything. Plus I don’t normally come down here after-hours.” Helena said simply kneeling down beside Feral not caring about the blood that would stain her skirt.
“If that’s true. Why are you here now?” Feral asked softly staring at the she-kat hoping she was telling the truth.
“Because of your voice. I…” Helena blushed and looked down, “I was delivering some files a few days ago and heard you. It was so beautiful but so sad.” She murmured quietly.
“You…liked my singing?” Feral said surprised by that. The scientists of course couldn’t care less about her ability and no one commented on it when she was at home but then she had been male at the time.
“Oh, yes! Very much. Um…may I ask where you learned to sing? Are those songs yours?” Helena asked shyly.
Feral glanced away, “My mother taught me. I don’t know where the songs are from.”
“She must have been a very talented person.” Helena said softly.
“She was.” Feral agreed. She let her power fade and the mental ‘paws’ disappeared without Helena being aware. But the voice was and it was furious.
‘What are you doing?! You can’t trust her or any of them! They’ll hurt you! Betray you! Kill her! Kill her now! Or you’ll regret it!’ It said angrily to her.
“Shut up.” Feral hissed mentally bristling at being ordered to ignore her own instincts.
“Is something wrong?” Helena asked sensing Feral tensing reaching out to place a paw on Feral’s shoulder comfortingly. It felt a little strange to them to feel skin and fur touching each other.
Feral shook her head, “No, nothing’s wrong. What’s…your name?”
“It Helena. Helena Taylor, my twin’s name is Cindy Taylor.”
“Twin?”
“Yes, we are identical and yours is?” Helena asked, giving her a small smile.
Feral studied her a moment before giving her a wane smile in return. “Feral, just call me Feral.”
Thus began a strange sort of friendship. Whenever she dared, Helena would come down and visit Feral bringing food, soda, and milk after the female had told her about how bad the food was that she was being given.
Helena would unchain Feral before stepping into the room. They would talk and trade information though it was Helena that did the most talking. Though Feral didn’t share much of her history, she did sing for Helena.
Many times Feral wished Helena could help her escape but after talking with the she-kat, she knew Helena didn’t have enough access to be able to pull it off. Another difficulty she had was the voice would keep screaming at her to stop talking to Helena to kill the she-kat but never gave a reason.
It took a bit of effort but she was finally able to shut out the voice completely. What Feral didn’t know was Helena wasn’t completely helpless. She had begun to study the layout of the laboratory looking for ways to help Feral escape this terrible prison. She also planned to report what they were doing to the proper authorities.
Through careful listening, she had learned the other subjects were being treated just as cruelly as Feral. She’d been going around carefully gathering evidence against these scientists who were doing illegal experimentation on the creatures known as Savannahs.
She should have confided in Feral on what she was doing. The enforcer would have told her how to cover her tracks. But she hadn’t and though she knew she was taking a great risk doing what she was doing, she wasn’t aware that her every move had been observed. All she cared about was trying to get her friend away from her torturers. The fact it could cost her job didn’t matter to her.
So after careful planning, earlier this evening she went through Director Jason’s computer files and records, copying them on a disk that already held other evidence. Once the copying was done Helena took the disk out and put it into a letter carrier. She didn’t want to be caught with it when she helped Feral escape from here tonight.
She left Director Jason’s office stopping by her desk and putting the letter into an outgoing mailbox. Helena had addressed it to her sister’s bookstore where it would arrive in about a week. She then left her office closing the door behind her. Before she could take another step, however, a voice called out to her.
“Working late again, Helena?” Director Jason asked. He was an Asian, semi-longhair kat with black short hair and violet eyes, and fur the color of cream. He wore a powder blue suit with black shoes and tie. His violet eyes stared coldly at Helena.
Helena froze as she noted the five guards standing alertly behind Director Jason.
“Director, w-what’s going on?” Helena asked stuttering a bit but trying to keep calm and hide her fear.
“I’ve been watching you for the past two weeks, Miss Taylor. I know what you’ve been doing; copying information illegally and particularly your visits to subject number seventeen.” He growled coldly. “Now, if you please, Miss Taylor, hand over that disk? If you do, I’ll let you go. No harm done, yes?” Jason asked coolly holding a paw out.
Helena glanced at Jason’s paw then the guards behind him. Knowing the disk was safely hidden and would soon be on its way that just left getting Feral out, she whirled around and fled down the hall running as fast as she could.
“Stop her!” Jason shouted.
The guards raced after her. She had only one advantage, she knew where she was going and they could only guess or keep her in sight. She ran hard keeping out of view of the guards until she reached the door she was desperately heading for. She pulled out her card and hurriedly swiped it. As soon as the door opened far enough she squeezed through. She frantically hit the button that released Feral’s chains then took the elevator down.
Feral had been surprised when her chains released and even more surprised when Helena ran into the room and came to her side looking frightened. The she-kat reached down and helped Feral to her feet.
“What’s going on?” Feral asked trying to stand on her own so that Helena wouldn’t carry all of her.
“I’m getting you out of here! Director Jason found out what I was doing and is now coming to take me.” Helena gasped out helping Feral across the floor.
“What did you do?” Feral asked in shock trying to move along as fast as she could.
“I’ve been investigating this place and poking through the company’s computer files. I’ve copied it and sent the information out.......” Helena explained.
“Are you crazy?! Why would do such a stupid thing!?” Feral said in horror knowing what would happen to her friend.
Helena glanced at her, her face determined. “It may have seemed stupid to you but it wasn’t to me. No friend of mine will be tortured and held against their will. Now let’s get you out of here.”
“I’m your…friend?” Feral asked surprise making her nearly stumble. She’d never really had a friend because she’d always been afraid they would find out her shameful secret.
“Of course, you are. What else would you be to me?” Helena said stopping a moment to hug Feral.
Feral couldn’t help but blush at the hug but enjoyed it so very much. It made her feel warm inside but it wasn’t to last. They’d made it to the elevator then out of the door. They had barely crossed the small office’s floor when the guards burst in followed by Director Jason holding a gun at the ready.
Helena clutched Feral closer to her side as the guards surrounded them pointing some potent looking guns at them. Jason stood behind them his own gun ready. Feral quickly checked for a way out using her enforcer skills. For a moment she thought perhaps her new power could help and began to form her mental ‘paws’ but was stopped by Jason’s next statement.
“I suggest you not try anything, seventeen. All five guns here have been custom made to fire a .50 caliber tungsten bullet. Your friend here can’t repel or stop them as easily as you can. Your choice! Surrender or be shot.” Jason ordered flatly.
Feral let go of Helena pushing her away, “I surrender. Just let Helena go and I’ll go back into the room.”
Jason nodded, “Good. Now…”
Before Jason could finish his instruction Feral stumbled forward as her knees collapsed under her. That was all it took for the tense guards to react to what they thought was an attack on the Director and fired at the pair.
Helena didn’t think twice as she pushed Feral to the floor and lay atop her as the bullets struck. The roar of gun fire filled the room along with a scream of agony. Feral screamed in anguish as she felt Helena’s body take the bullets in her back. Blood dripped down Feral’s back. Moments later silence reigned again. Helena’s body slid off Feral’s and hit the floor.
Feral’s face was filled with shock, disbelief and terrible anguish. Her only friend was dead.
“Helena!” Feral cried out miserably reaching out to pull the she-kat to her. She cradled Helena in her arms and sobbed. She laid her face to the still warm body and nuzzled it, mixing her tears with the blood.
“She didn’t deserve this! She was just trying to help me!” Feral said crying out.
“And for that she paid with her life. Her blood is on your paws now.” Jason said coldly looking down at her.
‘On our paws?! We’re not the one that fired! They were! But do you think they care now? No! They don’t care! They never had! It’s always your fault but never theirs!’ The voice said furiously sounding loud in her mind.
“You…fired…” Feral tried to refute ignoring the voice in her mind.
“And you moved.” Jason said shot back.
‘See! They don’t care! It will always be your fault but never their own. Yours! Yours! Yours! Don’t just sit there! Make them pay! Kill them!’ The voice screamed at her.
“Yes, I’ll make them pay. All of them for all they’ve done to me and took away.” Feral whispered bitter tears still falling.
A sudden gust of air whipped in the room causing Feral’s hair to fly wildly around her face. She looked up and stared at Jason with cold fury and pain in her golden eyes.
“Get down!” Jason shouted hitting the floor but it was to late for the guards.
The sound of flesh being ripped and slashed apart, bones breaking and shattering, screams that choked off suddenly filled the air and blood fell like rain.
Jason remained huddled on the floor then when it became nearly silent he pulled a taser out of his pocket. It had been amped up to release a much more powerful electrical charge than a normal one. He was lucky, when he peered up cautiously. He saw number seventeen was still distracted. He used that opportunity to reach out and touch her.
Feral cried out as her body jolted and shook violently for a long terrible moment. It forced her to let go of Helena’s body and to flop on the floor. She tried to overcome the shockwave but nothing in her body functioned. As her vision failed, her last sight was of her former friend’s lifeless body.
Once Jason was certain that number seventeen was unconscious he stood up and brought out his cell phone.
“This Director Jason. Send a clean up squad to my location. Also prepare holding room for number seventeen. Testing on the subject will no longer be allowed.” Jason said unfeelingly as he looked down at Feral and Helen for a moment.
When Feral finaly regained consciousness she found herself in some kind of upright gurney. She was wearing straight jacket that held her arms to her sides and she was tied down by cords and cables. Around her head was a strange form of helmet that allowed only her ears to move. There were metal rings that circled around her on poles showing the limit of her mental ‘paws’ range.
‘Where am I?’ Feral wondered, looking around the new room.
It wasn’t the white room she was used to. This was a more a metallic room with barely any light coming into the room except what came through the curtains. Suddenly from her side, two large double doors opened letting in a bright light that caused Feral to close her eyes. With her eyes closed, she didn’t see the two toms walking into the room till they were right at a black and yellow line marked on the floor.
“Are you certain about her, Dr. Nakamura? What if you’re wrong?” Jason said standing next to the aged tom.
“Do you question my judgment, Douglas?” Dr. Nakamura said looking at Feral with an almost contented look on his face.
“No, sir. But.....”
“Number one reacted to seventeen when her powers awakened. He even tried to break out.”
Jason’s eyes widened at that news. He had not been informed about number one’s attempt at escape. ‘But if what Nakamura says is true then she really is…but how is that possible?!’ Jason thought with a frown looking at Feral.
As the toms stood there studying her, Feral, who had finally opened her eyes to look at them had some questions of her own. Who was this Nakamura guy and what was he so certain about concerning her? Who was this number one? Another subject like her? Why did he try to escape and what did it have to do with her?
The questions burned through her but she was certain none of them would be answered. The Kat named Nakamura turned around and left the room. Jason continued to stand nearby, his face frowning in thought.
“You…” Feral said suddenly causing Jason to glance at her.
“What about me?” Jason asked blandly placing his paws behind his back.
“Do you have any friends? Family?” Feral growled coldly.
“Why do you want to know?”
Feral stared coldly at him. “I make this promise to you. I won’t kill you but I will kill all those you hold dear. Just as you’ve taken everything from me I will take everything from you.” She said cold as the arctic in her voice and eyes.
Jason couldn’t help but shiver at Feral’s words and look but kept himself in firm command though those cold gold eyes were going to haunt him for some time.
“Your promise is an empty one. All my family and loved ones are gone.” Jason said turning around and walking away.
“Liar.” Feral said flatly watching him pause a moment and stiffen before walking on again closing the door behind him.
Now alone in the dark room, fresh new tears began to fall she cared not if anyone was watching. ‘I’m so sorry, Helena. Sorry for everything. If only we hadn’t become friends you would still be alive. It’s all my fault.’ She thought miserably. She began to sing, her voice more sorrowful and bitter as she sang for the loss of everything that had mattered to her.
