Angela stretched her wings to catch a fresh updraft; Broadway wheeled to catch up. He didn’t quite make the same draft, leaving him falling farther behind. Angela smiled and fell back little to let him catch up.
They were on patrol, like most nights. Broadway has requested they fly together over a mostly empty stretch of area. Goliath had raised and eyebrow. Angela’d wanted to cuff him for embarrassing her in front of her father, but she didn’t protest.
Soon they would be flying over the waterway that she’d first landed on. Not so very long ago, when Goliath had brought her here with Elisa, she’d been so overwhelmed by this monstrous city. Sometimes she liked returning to the lake and contemplate. Usually she did so alone.
A twinge of guilt tugged at her soul. Memories of Avalon flooded back as a gentle mist filled the air.
She loved her new life here. Loved being with her father, with her practically adopted mother Elisa, the trio, Hudson, Bronx.
Angela swooped lower to avoid a thickening of the mist. Soon they’d either have to ground themselves and walk or go to higher altitudes to avoid it.
The mists reminded her of her life in Avalon. Homesick, Elisa called it. Sometimes her heart ached at the thought of maybe never seeing her brothers and sisters again. Poor Boudicca. All alone. Gabriel too, still waiting for her.
She dipped lower, skimming the treetops with her wing tips. Broadway swept out of the mist from above her, wrapping her in his arms. They tumbled together into the trees, Broadway twisting so he’d take the brunt of their weight as they got tangled in the limbs.
Angela laughed and hugged the big gargoyle. She let the loss of Gabriel slip away from her mind in favor of the present warmth and love. The other still lived in his fantasy world, and would remain there as long as Oberon would keep them safe.
Broadway’s smile gentled, softening to something more mature. Angela loved the private smile he gave only to her.
He picked a couple twigs from her hair and flicked them into the dark.
“Angela, I’m been meaning to ask you something.”
A little flutter in her stomach.
“Oh? What has been on your mind?”
“We’ve been spending a lot of time together lately, and, well…”
Angela grinned. She spread her talons across his bare chest. She liked that he only wore a loincloth. Covering his lovely green scales would be such a shame.
Every so often, she’d join Hudson in front of the tell-a-vision. The human’s ideal of thin people, men and women, made little sense to her. They couldn’t prove that they were able to hunt if they all looked half starved. How could a walking skeleton provide for a clutch of eggs?
Brooklyn and Lexington certainly had more too them than the human models in the magazines Fox brought in, but they were young still.
Broadway had a early maturity that warmed her spirit. So calm and gentle, yet fiercely protective when need be. Just as a young gargoyle should be.
“Uhh… what are you thinking about?”
Angela blushed and shook her head. She hadn’t realized how long the silence went on between them.
“I was just thinking how warm you are.” Angela’s fingers trailed along the tops of his pectoral muscles. While a human woman might only see the belly, she had seen the strength of his arms, both in defense and in love, his big chest holding an even bigger heart. “How strong.”
“You mean I’m big.”
The problem with his big, warm, soft heart is the galumph actually listened to all the pictures that magic box produced.
“Yes. You’re big. And you’re just right for me.” She twined her talons around the back of his bald head and kissed his chin.
“Really?”
“Really.” She kissed his bottom lip.
“So, you like me?”
Angela grinned and kissed him full on the lips. “I love you, big guy. Now come on. Let us take advantage of this ground cover while we have it.”
With a quick peck she sprang up through the branches and took hold of the wind again. A good natured roar followed her into the thick mists.
Broadway caught up faster than she’d believe. His wings grazed along her body. She ducked underneath him and tugged playfully at his belt before darting away again.
They zipped back and forth, light brushing of fingertips turning into long loving caresses. They soared out of the fog for a moment, then plunged back in like a pair of hawks, wings wrapped around one another, only to snap them open again as their bodies skimmed the brush below.
Angela’s blood singed. She wanted to challenge him, to strip her clothes and fly as high as she possibly could so they could truly enjoy each other’s bodies.
The glow in Broadway’s eyes told her he had the same thoughts.
She landed on an older tree’s branch, her breath coming hard, her body slick with sweat and tingling. His eyes glowed intensely when he settled beside her. His arms wrapped around her again, his hands feeling for the sensitive dimples above the base of her tail. Her talons cupped his jaw while she sucked on his lower lip.
“I want you.”
Angela shuddered with his words.
“I want you too, but there isn’t enough mist. We’ll be seen.”
He pulled back far enough away that she could see the crooked grin.
“Flying and falling isn’t the only way, you know. I’ve learned a lot about the humans from watching the teevee, and not just the stuff Hudson watches. Come on, one more turn in the air, then I want to try something.”
Angela growled her frustration as she took off after Broadway. How could he learn anything useful from that damn magic box?
They raced even harder, Broadway leading off some in some direction. The mist grew thicker, a strange tingling ruffling the leather of Angela’s wings. She shivered as small droplets of water began striking her heated skin.
“Broadway?” she called out tentatively. She could barely see him. Lightening struck in the distance. She startled and backpedaled a moment. No, that wasn’t natural lightening. Another blast struck very near, little aftershocks rippling around and leaving fairy sparks in their wake. “Broadway!”
She landed in a hurry and continued to call after him. They needed to find shelter, quickly. Magical storms spelled no good. One of Demona’s tricks!
“Angela!”
She ran to the sound of his voice. They clutched each other in a downpour that came from nowhere. Angela tossed her head to get her wet ropey mane out of her face.
“Come on, I know a place!” Broadway yelled over the hiss of the water hitting the trees, the ground.
He clutched her hand and ran. She followed, uncertain.
Magical lightening traced their footprints in the sodden dirt. They ran faster, pushing through brush and briars.
A clearing. They pushed their way through. A tendril of ice swept through Angela. This is where the boat from Avalon had landed and brought them home. The mist surrounded the area, but didn’t come near the slumping shape in the middle. She froze.
“What do you think that is?”
“I… I don’t know.” Please, not Gabriel.
Broadway walked up to the object. She couldn’t. Wouldn’t.
“Angela! There’s someone hurt!”
Lightening flashed, crackled around, illuminating a slumped figure in a broken and charred excuse for a raft. No, not Gabriel.
Broadway hauled the broken lumber up onto the beach and climbed in. He lifted the limp figure up. The movement seemed to rouse the stranger. The head lolled up, eyes opened, widened as they made contact with Angela’s.
The stranger shoved Broadway aside with a sudden burst of energy. Wings opened; he launched himself into the air and disappeared into the fog. Only then could Angela get her feet to move. She rushed to Broadway’s side. He’d been pushed over the side. One leg’d caught on a rough chunk of wood.
Angela rubbed the lump on his head. He opened his eyes slowly.
“Are you okay?”
Angela smiled half-heartedly. “I think that would be my line. How’s your head?”
He rubbed the spot himself. “Ow. What happened?”
“Another Gargoyle. Considering the entrance, it’s someone who knows how to use Avalon’s magic. We need to tell Goliath.”
“Yeah. Guess so.”
He got up with Angela’s help. With both of them working at it, they flipped the raft over and hid under it until the spell dissipated enough that they could take off again. And snuggle a little before returning to the rest of the clan.
