Things gained their own rhythm in the lair. Mona’s relationship most of her ‘roomies’ appeared to be good. Although her friendship with Raph seemed strained. Every time they were in the same room she found the air heavy and thick. With a feeling in her gut that was both cold and hot at the same time. The sparring and lessons with them always left her feeling tired but energized. By her second month training alongside them she had chosen her weapon. It had been a surprise to Raph she had chosen the Tessen. Her strong point had turned into her use with a Katana. He didn’t understand why she had chosen a metal fan over a razor sharp blade of steel. The reasoning behind her chose soon became clear when Raph found her practicing late one night.
The style of dance didn’t match the sweat pants and tank top she wore. Hair piled on the top of her head. He had seen the style of dance in the tea houses of Japan once, in a movie. It was easy to imagine the music and see how it fit with her movements. With how she used the fans you would never realize their lethal potential. For some reason it made him clench his hands into fists. It was like his mind switched over in it’s opinion of her. He had seen her as the goofy little brain who had him stuttering as a young kid. Now he had seen her for the neo adult she was. With a more appealing body shape. His mouth felt dry and he tried to will himself to turn and go back to his room. Instead of going back, his feet went forward. She stopped mid sway, she stayed in the position and watched him.
“Now I get it,” Raph said. “Why you chose what you did.”
She raised an eyebrow at him but remained silent. After a moment she went back into her movements, humming. He felt his pulse grow louder in his ears.
“If you’re doing this to piss me off, Mona, you managed it,” He growled.
“My choices don’t involve you, Raphael. There isn’t a reason for them to,” She said.
“Show me what you’re capable of,” Raph hissed.
She glanced at him over her shoulder, snapping the fans shut. There was a thin sheen of sweat on her skin that almost looked shimmery blue against the green. He pulled his Sais from his belt and got into a defensive position. She stood straight and clapped her hands together and bowed before him. He curled his lip. Almost straight away he went to attack her. He spun one Sai around in a hand and then jabbed for her. She ducked to the side and ducked. He then jabbed with the other arm. His motions were choppy with much force behind them.
“To think, this is what we come to now,” Mona replied.
She blocked the second Sai with her Tessen. He brought a knee up and it collide with her elbow. The knee hit the small nerve there to send odd sensations down her arm. She grit her teeth. She didn’t want to injure him or lose her temper. But something about tonight was grinding at her. She wasn’t sure quite what that was yet. He did a leg sweep and she jumped, using his shoulders to flip over his head. When she landed she felt him hit her in the back with a foot. HARD. It knocked her forward. Mona was starting to suspect this wasn’t a sparring match. He went for another hit and she spun in her crouched position and rammed her fists into his stomach. She was surprised to find that the front shell, the plastron was softer then she had expected. She knew her punches weren’t enough to do that much damage.. But it did knock the wind out of him. While he was hunched over she pressed her hands to the mat and spun around again in the opposite direction. One leg swept underneath him and knocked him onto his back. He fell back with a thud and she got up, putting one foot on each side of him and pointed the butt end of her Tessen at his throat.
“Don’t get so smug yet, Mona,” Raph hissed.
She gave a dirty smirk, and in the motion of moving her legs again she kicked him in the face. In a lightening quick motion he grabbed her foot and pulled. She fell into her side on the mat, stomach to the floor. She started to get up when he mimicked her pose from before. One arm partially behind him holding her calve. She glared at the mat.
“Now what do you intend to do, Mona?” He mused, voice dark.
She calculated her next move quickly in her head. She let her body shift to the side and brought her knee up and slammed it into his. She felt a pop from his knee through her leg. He let go of her calve. She then slipped out from underneath him and opened the fan. She used it to cover the lower part of her face and did the ‘come here’ hand motion with the other. The fan was a good way to hide the fact she was very amused with him. He was proving that he was the ‘hot head’ Leo had described now. All the eternal baggage the fox woman left was too evident.
“Love fades,” Mona said. “Sometimes with no warning. Or it rots from within you until makes you a shell.”
He gave a shout and slammed a fist into her gut. She found herself thankful for the muscle control there.
“You talk too much,” Raph growled.
She spun the fan around and the sharp tips of the fan blades dragged across one of his arms. The cut looked deeper than she meant it to be.
“Admit you despise me being here,” Mona said. “Get it out of your system since it’s pretty damn evident that’s the case.”
“You. Know. Nothing,” He growled.
Another jab with his Sai. Another duck and punch for her. This time she aimed for and hit his elbow. The Sai dropped out of his hand. But the hints kept coming and she kept blocking, several hits made it past. She found her back slamming into a support beam and realized there was no other place to go. He flicked the remaining Sai at the mat and it stuck there, halfway embed into the mat. His hands went for her throat. She balled up a fist and punched him in the side, the place where his plastron and shell connected. He growled in her face. Her skin felt insanely warm and she tried to escape again. But those hands clamped around her neck. He began to squeeze and she dropped the fan.
“You’re a piss poor Ninja,” Raph told her, voice full of venom.
A vein throbbed at her temple. She dug her nails into his forearms.
“And you can’t control your temper for shit,” She growled at him.
His expression turned harder and he squeezed her neck tighter. She inched a foot closer to her Tessen and picked it up by the blunt end with her toes. She dropped a hand from around his forearm and bent her leg just enough to grab the fan.
“Your biggest mistake,” She said.
She balanced the folded weight in her hand then jabbed the blunt end hard into his side. He gave a bark but the hands didn’t drop.
“Let me go, Raph… You’re going to kill me,” Mona said.
Thin lines of black started to invade her vision. She needed to break him out of this trace. Whatever was making him do this to her. That’s when it occurred to her. With her grip still on the fan she rammed the blunt tip into the top of one of his knees. The unexpected jab made him loosen his grip on her. She darted away quickly and tosses the fan away. She was angry now, more angry then before. Her lungs burned as she breathed. Now being able to actually get all the oxygen she wanted. Her back was to him.
“Not once did you ever write or call,” Raph growled somewhere behind her. “Not even a attempt to make sure we survived the teen years.”
“So to get even with me you treat me like shit?” Mona asked. “I had my own life to deal with. Coming to terms with my mutation and what was ahead of me.”
She got into a defensive position now, facing him.
“You lie worse than you fight,” Raph hissed.
She watched him for another moment before going back into a normal stance. Without looking at him again she turned and walked away.
“Don’t you turn away from me!” Came a shout.
“Go sleep it off,” Mona said with a wave of her hand.
Once inside her room she inspected her neck to survey the damage. There was already dark bruising around her neck. The bruising made her frown. It would be hard to explain in the morning she was sure.
The following morning she made breakfast for everyone. She made no attempt to hide the bruising on her neck. And she made no attempt to look away from Raph when he saw them. His eyes seemed to be on the bruises for most of breakfast.
“What happened to your neck?” Don asked.
Mona gave a forced small smile, “Sparring gone foul.”
Don tilted his head at her. Raph glanced at him.
“I see. If you haven’t tried it yet.. Ice helps with healing of bruises,” Don said.
“So does mug wart paste,” Mona replied. “I’m not worried about them. After all, it’s good example how anger can make you stupid.”
Raph grit his teeth at that one. She smirked. Don came over to her and inspected her neck, turning her chin away a moment.
“Luckily for us your skin’s handling it pretty well,” Don said. “Still suggest the ice and mug wart.”
Mona watched Don pick up his coffee cup and refill it.
“Off to make my dollars,” He said. “Try not to wreck the place okay?”
Raph kept his eyes on Mona as Don went to his computer center. Sounds of him logging on and chiming a greeting echoed. Raph then got up and walked towards her. Mona perked a eyebrow. He came up closer to her and she pressed a hand against his chest.
“If all you intend to do is try to beat the shit out of me, or yell at me everyday you aren’t getting any closer,” She stated. “I didn’t come here to get punished for your misery, Raphael.”
“What do you know about misery, Mona?” Raph asked.
“Plenty,” Mona replied.
She dropped her hand and walked away. She started to realize she had more of a habit of leaving him alone in a room… Then staying in it. She wandered around in the lair a moment hoping to find someplace she can relax and have some peace and quiet. Her mind was on something else as she watched the empty dojo. She could sense someone standing behind her. Faintly should could smell sandalwood.
“What are your plans for the morning?” The voice behind her asked.
She smiled lightly, “Getting scared out my skin by the one in Blue.”
He chuckled, “You didn’t jump, so it didn’t count.”
“Maybe head topside for a bit. I haven’t bought any groceries lately and we’re running low,” Mona said.
He clapped a hand on her shoulder, “Grab your coat. I’ll go with you.”
She chuckled and headed towards her room. After a moment she had her gray trench coat pulled on and a pair of shoes. Leo met her at her door and pressed the side of her neck with a finger, near one of the larger bruises.
“Looks like Raph’s handy work,” Leo said.
She blushed faintly, “What makes you think that?”
“He can resort to bad tactics when he starting to lose a sparring match,” Leo said.
“He isn’t the same Raph I remembered,” Mona said as they exited the lair. “Perhaps I just need to come to terms with the anger and rage.”
“He hasn’t been the same for a long time,” Leo said as they walked.
“I understand,” Mona said as she put her hands into her pockets.
“What made you choose to come to the lair?” Leo asked. “Or come back, at least.”
She shrugged, “I wanted to. I missed the chaotic way of life maybe.”
He chuckled slightly at that one.
“Our lives can be a bit chaotic can’t it?” Leo asked.
“So it seems,” Mona said. “But with all Splinter has told me, I’ve missed plenty of things.”
“Like?” Leo asked.
“The Ultroms,” She said. “The Ninja Tribunal. Things like that… And three Shredders?”
He rubbed the back of his neck, “A lot to take in isn’t it?”
“Yes,” She said.
“Do you… really want to go grocery shopping right now?” Leo asked.
“Not really,” Mona said. “I really just want to get out for awhile.”
“A likely story,” Leo said.
“Hey you’re the one who asked me what I was doing this morning,” She said pointing at him. “So you’re the one with the evil scheme.”
He snorked at her, “I think you can give Mikey a run for his money.”
“Meh,” Mona said with a shrug. “I just like being a goof ball to break away from the mundane.”
They walked around topside for about two hours that morning. Mona found herself forgetting her preconceived notions. She had thought before Leo was some stiff coat stick in the mud. She was rather relieved to find he could be silly and a goofball given the right atmosphere.
By the time they got back to the lair it was time for another training session. She was new to the lesson Splinter chose, but the guys seemed to be old pros at it. It was a challenge for her to balance her weight on the bamboo reeds. But it was enjoyable and gave her a good reason to focus more on training and less on her own musing. She had several missed steps and almost fell at least four times. It proved the point that she didn’t expect to excel in the arts like the turtles. She just wanted to know enough to hold her own.
She hoped it would keep up like this. Calm and steady.
