Book One~ Fire meets Water~
Chapter Two
They were a quiet people he noticed. They did not stare at him as he came aboard the ship. They knew why he was there and for what purpose. They trusted in their Captain’s decision. They had loyalty something lacking in his family.
Zuko slowly walked along the upper deck as the ship pulled away from the dock to leave the earth kingdom. He committed this shoreline to his memory for he would return and make the sea red with his enemies’ blood. First he would find his uncle and they would return to the Fire Nation for his father and sister and take their revenge. He had no doubts Iroh was alive. His uncle was cunning and had many friends in the other nations. He knew he was safe and that soon they would meet again.
Heavy footsteps of the one who paid for his freedom from his earth prison interrupted his thoughts of revenge. The man stood watching him with suspicion until Zuko looked at him.
“Why were you there and why are they fearful of you? It is not easy to make rock tremble.”
“You know of what they sell they have enemies that far exceed me.”
Bato’s face still held no expression. “I have never seen Xin fu afraid of anything. Yet, you make them both back in fear. Who are you?”
He had no business knowing who he was; in due time if this unwanted suitor pleased him he would show them all who he was.
“I will do what you desire that is all you need to know about me.”
Bato’s frown marred his expressionless face. “I am concerned for the Princess’s safety that is the reason for my questions.”
“Is she weak and unappealing and that is the reason you must seek help outside your clan.”
Bato chuckled. “She is none of those things. I suspect Chief Wan has threatened the others and they fear his power. The princess provokes it and he only wishes to subdue her rebellion against him. I suspect in his insane way he desires her love as well as her body. He is not blind to that.”
The stories Zuko heard of the women from the water clan most considered a nightmare. They were not as beautiful as the women of the Fire Nation were. Most of these stories came from the Commanders of his father’s army that wanted to promote the idea that his nation was superior to any other. Ozai preached having only pure children of fire and not mixing with other nations. He constantly ignored his own words and took many of different nations as his lovers.
What Water considered beautiful was very different from what Fire considered beautiful. Maybe he too believed his father’s rhetoric but right now, he had no reason to doubt it until he saw this woman in distress.
“What sorts of men inhabit your water tribe that they would not fight for their princess?”
Bato heard the mocking tone in Li’s voice. He seemed to have some sort of rage inside of him. It seeped from him even as he tried to hide it. A storm brewed inside of him. Bato began to realize that he was a bad choice.
“My people are a peaceful sort of men. Wan came from the northern tribe as an ally to my King. We know now it was all a guise to get close to the Princess and claim the Kingdom as his. He is very powerful and in the beginning proved his worth to my King but recently he started asking for meetings with Katara alone. Prince Sokka has always refused his requests in the name of the King. These two are no strangers to war they have battled each other in the past. Chief Wan fears the King will send him away if the young men of the tribe continue to see Prince Sokka as the one to follow. He is desperate to have the Princess now that the Prince is away. We do not wish to rip our homeland apart with war among our clansmen.”
“You wish for the people to rip me apart.”
Bato looked over the tall, muscular man and raised his eyebrow. “I have heard that you possess much skill. I do not think it will be easy to rip you apart. My people will more than likely embrace you as will the Princess.”
Bato suddenly turned away from Zuko when one of the crewmembers called his name. He walked towards the man to see what the problem was.
“The wind has shifted and is pushing us towards our home faster than we expected. We will be arriving home by mid morning tomorrow.”
“I will send word to the King.” Bato looked back at Zuko, nodded, and then walked away with the crewmember leaving Zuko alone on the deck with his thoughts.
It would take less than two days to reach the Southern tribes waters he would have plenty of time to think out his strategy concerning this Chief Wan. He would convince this man to join him by giving him the very thing he was to protect. It would not matter if this princess Katara were beautiful it would not sway him from this plan. What could turn a man from his path of vengeance? Nothing would turn him his path laid before him and he would leave a trail of blood in his wake.

~Southern Water Nation ~
They all ignored her. The townspeople acted as if she did not exist whenever she came to the market for supplies with the women of the palace. She knew that Chief Wan had everything to do with their behavior. Katara sighed as she walked into a teashop for a cup of tea before returning home. If she had looked more carefully before going inside, she would have left the town quickly and quietly before, he saw her.
She was beautiful as ever in the flowing white fabric she wore. His flesh tightened at the prospect of claiming this creature as his. There was no one else to challenge him here. He held absolute power even though he was not king…at least not yet. Wan smiled as the oblivious princess sat down sighing as she lifted her heavy hair from her neck to let the light breeze blow across the back of it.
“I would gladly do that for you if you would let me.”
Her heart stopped and the blood chilled in her veins at the sound of his voice. Where did he hide that she did not see him? Sokka always told her to look out for him and not to be alone with him. If he had her, he would have this kingdom.
She calmed her rising panic. If he saw her fear, he would know she was here without guard and she would have to defend herself. He was stronger but she was smarter. However, warring with him now would assuredly bring division within this kingdom. She would pretend a full guard came with her and that Sokka was due to be here soon.
She heard him get up from his seat and walk towards her. The calm Princess let her hair fall to her waist and glared up at him as he stood before her table.
“Out alone is not something I would want my wife to decide to do with so many undesirables about this place.”
“Are you considering yourself among these people of who you speak so eloquently?” Her mocking smile made him chuckle and sit across from her at the table.
“Are you trying to keep me standing for a better target for the archers following you?”
Katara continued to smile as the server returned with the tea she knew the Princess enjoyed. Katara thanked her as she bowed and departed. “Does it really matter what you are doing when they are about.”
The dark haired chief moved his dark gaze along the glowing caramel skin on her arms and exposed tops of her breasts since she had removed the excess fabric from that area. Why she protested to his attention he did not know and that made him try harder to gain her approval. She had no idea how well suited they were for each other. Of course, he would have to tame her wayward spirit but she was beautiful and he needed that beauty to make his push for control of this kingdom complete.
He was not an ugly man, many women found him desirable. He was tall and in perfect health. There was no reason for her rejection of him.
“I have thought about our differences of opinion concerning our union and have come to the conclusion that you fear what would happen if we were alone. How could you contain your desire for me?”
Her laughter ran through his sensitive body and caused it to harden. “How could I contain my desire? I think you mean nausea because that is the only thing I feel for you. Why would you think any woman would feel anything else because of the dung that you spout from your mouth?”
Wan chuckled. “Ahhh there have been many to warm my bed and you will feel the benefits of that soon.”
“You will never touch me. I would give myself to the first man whoever kissed me rather than even touch your hand.”
Wan frowned at the anger that marred her beautiful face. “You belong to me and only me. No other will ever know your touch or the way you taste but me. You will rip this kingdom apart because of this virgin’s fear.”
Katara slammed her fists on the table as she glared at him. “You are the one ripping this kingdom apart because you are trying to force something that will never happen. I will never love you I loathe you.”
Wan smiled at her as the tea in the cup began to boil with her rising anger. “I do not loathe you Katara. I dream of the day when you lie beneath me submitting to me your body.”
Katara groaned in frustration and leaped up from her seat heading for the door. Wan got up and blocked her exit. The beautiful cerulean eyes only held anger as they stared up at him.
“Unless you wish for me to call Sokka I suggest you move.”
She saw him flinch and begin looking around for the Prince. He was the one he feared. Her brother could not bend a single element but he was a warrior that never lost a fight. Katara moved past the preoccupied man and out the door. Wan came after her.
“Do not forget that you belong to me my princess and soon you will call me husband and father of your children.”
Katara walked faster down the crowded street hearing him chuckling after her. She would see him again tomorrow when Bato returned. She hoped he would bring good news and something sharp to thrust into Wan’s chest.
~ Somewhere deep in the mountains~
Aang held down a corner of the map as the cool wind began to blow and raise the unsecured edges of the parchment. The two other men kneeling around the rock each held down a corner and continued searching for places Zuko could be.
Iroh came to the Avatar in desperation when Zuko did not return for the evening meal. He saw his nephew tear out of the castle to an undisclosed location but no one else knew of where he went. Ozai his brother knew but was useless to Iroh. The Dragon’s fear grew immensely when he could not find Azula anywhere in the castle. He tried for years to keep her father’s will from her but it was a losing battle she fed from Ozai’s evil and Zuko did not. His concerns for his own safety became paramount when Commander Zhao became a prisoner of his brother. Iroh fled.
“It is possible that he is someone’s prisoner. If he even thought, his sister was in peril he would come to her aid with no thought of the adversary that awaited him. If there were, many they might prevail. If Azula helped, they would prevail.”
Sokka frowned as he looked at the earth kingdom on the map. “Who could hold him? What nation would go against Ozai?”
“Maybe they are working with him and Azula knows where he is.” Aang said looking at Iroh as the old general lifted his head from the map and looked at him.
Iroh grunted. “She is in hiding. She fears that she is next in my brother cleansing. She should fear what awaits her if Zuko finds her.”
Sokka ran his thumb across his lips thinking of how to cover the vast territory the earth kingdom occupied. “I know that someone of the earth kingdom has him.”
“Why would you think that?” Aang raised and eyebrow watching the Water Prince looking over the map.
“It is the only thing that makes sense. They can hide him and it is much too big for any one army to search. It would be hard to find him there but if we split up, we could cover much ground. I have someone that would help us and we could search the east while you and Iroh searched the west.”
“She is from the earth kingdom why would she help you find someone from the fire nation my brother has warred with them for years and has taken many lives.”
Sokka did not raise his head as he spoke to Iroh. “We have the same interests.”
“Yue will not like that she is looking at you to become her husband not one to an earth bender.”
The water tribe warrior raised his head to look at the Avatar and his questioning expression. Aang introduced them and possibly felt responsible for their failing relationship. He had nothing to do with their problems; Yue had made all of them herself.
“The Princess Yue’s desires mean very little to me at the moment.” Iroh grunted when Aang frowned at Sokka’s words.
“After we find Prince Zuko perhaps we can discuss this later.”
“I will be more than happy to explain it to you.” Sokka began folding up the map as Aang stared at him with suspicion.
This would be a silent trip, Iroh concluded as the Avatar rose and walked towards his bison without giving another look towards his friend.

~ Southern Water tribe
They had just finished the mid morning meal when Chief Wan arrived. He knew of the approaching ship and what cargo it carried. His arrogance magnified as he thought of the embarrassment he would cause this new hope for the Princess Katara. He had successfully pressed his power advantage over every possible suitor for her hand. This man would just be another to feel his wrath. He would crush her hopes until she realized that he was the way to happiness. She would bend to him and give up her need to think freely and be at his side as a queen once he killed her parents and Prince Sokka she would have no other choice.
Wan smiled imaging her dreams as the night ended and the day of her salvation began. She was foolish.
Wan watched her standing on the balcony looking out towards the eastern shore waiting for the sign of Bato’s ship. He presumed that excitement ran through her veins knowing that Bato brought a solution to her problem. What solution did she think would work against him? He would immediately put this man in his place as he had all the others. She would not escape him.
Katara heard the heavy footsteps approaching and looked towards her visitor with hatred in her eyes. She knew he would come to gloat. His eyes roamed over her body with a possessive air that made her skin crawled and she pulled the thin pale yellow scarf over her exposed shoulders.
“I am not for you to look upon as if you own me.”
Wan smiled. “I will soon enough.” The reflection of steel in his peripheral vision told him that the palace guards had joined them and he would have to be on his best behavior.
“I do not understand why a man would pursue someone who does not want him. Are you here because you want to be here? There is nothing for you in this palace. You should return north there you held power here you only earn disgrace with every word that comes from your lips. What was Yue thinking to suggest you come here for what purpose are you here? Unless you deceived her as you have tried to deceive my father.”
“This tribe is weak and needs a new leader. All the men here cower when I am near. You require a strong hand to mold you and teach you the ways a woman should act to her husband. Yue understood your shortcomings and decided that I should show your parents the errors of their ways.”
Katara listened carefully to his words dissecting the very meaning of what he was saying. What would Yue know of her parents Sokka never invited her here. Wan’s constant fighting with Sokka began to make sense to her now. Maybe Yue sent him here to force Sokka to her but it did not work out the way she wanted and now she had lost Sokka and Wan was an outcast. Maybe he wanted revenge for the sentence she imposed on him and the southern clan was the only way he saw to do that.
Wan smiled at her deep in thought. “Yue sent me here to keep and eye on the Prince yes but he became secondary when I saw you one day.”
Her interest was peeked he could tell by her smooth brow. “Why would she need to keep an eye on Sokka?”
Wan chuckled. “You will have to ask her that yourself but considering that she will never set foot on this land without Sokka’s permission you will never have that answer.”
A chiming bell turned Katara’s attention from her conversation with Wan and towards the sea. Bato’s ship came into view and her heart leaped with excitement.
“I pray that your dreams of a hero are not dashed when this coward arrives. All will tremble beneath me as will you my Princess.” With those few words, he turned and walked towards the doors that led inside the palace. He would make sure that this new suitor saw the face of his rival immediately.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Zuko did not expect to see brilliant colors scattered through out the hilly countryside of the Water tribe territory. Such beauty he thought only existed in his homeland. He could feel the men on the ship standing behind him on the deck. They were expecting something from him that he would not give them. He was not their savior he was here for his own justice and that was all.
The palace guards stood silently at the dock waiting for those on board the ship to exit. Bato informed them that he, Li was a man of royal lines and powerful connections, and that is all they would know. They asked no other question of Bato as Zuko set foot on the Southern Water tribe’s soil. The men made a path for him and Bato and they walked towards the tall white and sand colored castle that held the ruling family.
A tall green-eyed man was the first person Zuko saw as the doors to the grand hall slowly opened. This was Chief Wan. He looked ready for a fight as Zuko walked down the center aisle towards the King and Queen waiting to greet him. The sunlight flooded the room through the glass ceiling that lay atop this section of the castle. A fire bender had been here at sometime. The four tall white pillars at each corner of the massive room showed power while the delicate artistry surrounding the hall showed patience and love for the people here. They had a rich life here and one they would defend.
He could sense the suspicion from the King but his wife only held a smile on her face, as she looked him over from head to toe. He had no doubts she was thinking of the damage he would inflict upon Wan. Zuko stopped before them with Bato at his side and the palace guards waiting for the King to pronounce his sentence upon this newcomer.
King Hakoda looked at his lifelong friend and extended his hand towards Zuko. “I am honored to have you visit us Prince Li.”
His grip was strong and warm to Hakoda. Li possessed power but how would he use that against Wan. He had crushed so many suitors without fail.
“I am honored to be here.” Zuko heard the grunt from Wan as he pulled his hand away from the King.
“You should know that the Princess is not your concern. She has made her choice of suitor and your presence here is not required.”
Impetuous he was that was good. An alliance between them would have very favorable results Zuko thought as Wan glared at him
A soft sound of footsteps drew everyone’s attention to the stairs behind the throne. Zuko saw the free flowing pale yellow fabric gently caressing caramel skin with every slow movement towards the next step. The leaves of the giant tree that grew behind the throne obscured his view of her face as she descended the stairs. He would burn every single one of these trees to the ground.
Her nerves were a jumbled mess and made her feel weak as she came closer to the throne room. The silence made her condition even worse. Her feet touched the floor of the room holding Bato’s gift and Katara forgot how to breathe for that small moment she looked into his eyes.
She stood at the bottom of the stairs looking at the long black haired man that stared at her with his scarred face and golden gaze. It was as if he forgotten where he was and what he was doing as he watched her… tremble when she could not turn away from his gaze.
She was worth the fight of her people. She was worth the desire. She was worth…him. His eyes slowly praised her body as they cascaded over her. A savior is what she needed a savior is what she had.
“This is my daughter Princess Katara.” Hakoda held out his hand to her and Katara slipped her hand into his without taking her eyes from the tall stranger. As Hakoda pulled her towards him, Zuko came forward.
Kya felt the raw and lustful emotions from him. Her daughter had never felt such attraction to any man at first glance. The way she trembled under his stare and the impossible task of trying to catch her breath told Ursula Wan’s days were numbered.
“I am Prince Li.” Zuko stared down into the cerulean eyes as heat invaded his body wanting to singe and burn her as his possession as his mate. What could turn a man from his path of vengeance? It was staring him in the face.
Wan glared at the two as they stared at each other as if they were alone. This could damage his hold over the young men if they saw this Prince’s power over Katara and her power over this stranger. What was wrong with her? She could not possibly find him handsome as scarred as his face was. This Prince was overconfident in his power to woo his woman.
“As I have said she is none of your concern if that is the reason you are here then you should leave now.”
Bato was not expecting the man touch the Princess very gently on her cheek or the sweet sound of her surprise of his warm thumb grazing her skin. He expected the King to react with violence but he did not. He stood there mesmerized also that this stranger could weave such a tangled web around his spirited daughter and they had never met.
However, just as Bato expected, Wan reacted as a jealous man and reached for the man’s hand seeing no one else make an effort to stop this indecent action. His attempt to stop Zuko brought violence that was swift and powerful.
Wan groaned as Zuko twisted his wrist painfully and then slammed it against his chest causing the powerful water master to stumble back into a row of guards. Wan cried out in anger and moved to attack Zuko but the tip of Bato’s sword found its way to his neck.
“The Prince is a guest of the King and you will act accordingly.” The sound of other weapons leaving their sheaves caused Wan to rethink his plan of attack. The Chief calmed himself and smiled at Zuko.
“Forgive my actions, her presence always demands my full attention, and anyone disrupting that is not my ally.”
Silence filled the hall as the two rivals stared at each other. What did Wan think he was doing challenging a man who had so easy beaten him without even moving from his place before the Princess? Did he not know that he was no match for this man?
Zuko turned his attention from Wan and back towards Katara. She was worth his full attention. “Then we are not allies.”
“You wish a fight then stranger. I will give you one and rip this clan apart.” His gaze fell on Katara standing before Zuko. “It will be your choice whether this clan lives or dies.”
Hakoda grunted in disagreement. “My daughter is not to blame for your weakness. He is.”
Wan held his wrist and stared at Zuko. “You will know my wrath soon enough.”
Bato lowered his sword as Wan walked from the throne room already planning his next move to repair the damage this small infraction with the Prince caused. His retribution would be swift and violent as had Li’s reaction had been. Bato had no doubts the stranger could handle the Chief and drive him back to the north with his tail between his legs. He saw no planned reaction or false emotions come from Li when he his eyes beheld the princess. Li wanted her; Bato could tell by the quietness of the storm that brewed inside the man while on the ship. Katara calmed whatever demon possessed his body. Bato was beginning to realize that he was a good choice.
