AN: Yes, short chapters. Can't help it. Hopefully they'll come quicker from now on, now that I have some idea of what's going to happen. Naming issues within the first chapter should be fixed.
Thankfully, nothing came of the incident straight away. Pakku graduated into the next level of bending classes, meaning he was occupied with studies all night and asleep all day. That suited me fine, especially when I was asked to tutor Hokaka. She also struggled with the fact that she had no bending, and I felt sorry for her. Hoku was fairly adept, but most of the power seemed to have gone to their older brother.
When tutoring Hokaka in the art of bending-less healing, she usually came to my house, or we’d go to the city wall together. The girl was fairly intelligent, and showed promise as a courtly figure. She may have only been eleven, but she had quick reflexes, and excellent self-control. Life had dealt the young girl a hard hand, but she refused to let it get her down. Somehow, she could always find the good in any situation. Tutoring her was fun, and several times after a lesson we would sit on the wall and watch the waves together, taking solace from the water that we would never control.
Yugoda was also learning quickly, and had become close with the aging teacher. I had firm suspicions that she would be named Ananya’s successor.
Things became steady and peaceful, and I was kept busy with my own classes, tutoring Hokaka, and my lessons in lady-like behaviour. It stayed the same for about a year, and it was one of the happiest periods of my life.
The trouble started during a particularly harsh winter. Pakku had continued to bend through the night, and had become sick. Hokaka, bless her, came running straight to me – she reasoned that I was like an older sister to her, and she trusted me to take care of her brother. I bit my tongue, grabbed my healing kit, and followed her to their small house on the outskirts of the city.
On walking in, I was immediately struck with how cold it was. The fire was out, the furs were old, and Hoku was doing his best to seal up the ice windows but not quite managing. Pakku was lying on the ground, wrapped in the few spare furs the small family had and apparently unconscious. I took one look around, then beckoned Hoku to me.
“Hoku, go back to my house. Get a big armful of wood, and get my father to bring some furs as well. Pakku needs to be kept warm.”
With the young boy dashing out to get the requested things, I turned to his sister.
“Hokaka, start the fire and boil some water. There’s not really much I can do, but there are some herbs that will make him more comfortable.” I knew that it was most likely one of the random illnesses that tended to strike those who had been exposed to cold for too long, and that he would get well soon enough on his own. As long as we kept him warm, that is.
Soon enough, a merry little fire was burning, and with Hokaka’s help I moved Pakku as close as I dared without risking setting the furs on fire. He continued to sleep, and I let him. At least while he was asleep, his body could fight off the infection. The fact that he couldn’t look at me while he was asleep had nothing to do with it. As the kettle was starting to boil, Hoku and my father came in, carrying more wood and furs. I gave the twins instructions on how to care for their brother, and was about to leave when Father suggested that I stay as well. I saw the appraising look he had given Pakku earlier, and had a fair idea of what he had in mind. I bit my tongue again (it was starting to get very sore) and nodded.
When I turned to look to the twins, I regretted my selfish impulse to leave. They looked terrified, and I realised that they were afraid that Pakku was going to die, like their parents had. I sat down on some spare furs and called them both to me. Holding them close, I told them exactly what was happening to their brother, and that he was most likely going to be fine. I promised that I would stay until he was better, and that I would take care of them.
I put the two to bed with firm instructions to sleep until morning, and not to worry. I then moved my furs closer to Pakku, to keep an eye on him during the night. He woke up briefly, and was a little delusional, seeming to think that I was his mother. I played along, and made him drink some of the tea I had made. He fell back into slumber quickly, and I sighed as I studied him properly.
Pakku was good-looking, that was for sure. His brown hair was usually done up in the traditional student’s style, but for now it was loose around his face. He had a well-defined bone structure, and even in sickness there was a strength about his wiry body. And his eyes were brilliant blue, reminding me more of the summer sky than the ocean, with no pale flecks to mar them. I sighed again, thinking what a shame it was that he was so… prickly. It was so hard to get to know him that most didn’t even try. I thought of my father’s look, and wondered if I would be having to try soon.
Not liking that train of thought, I lay down again and fell asleep, reasoning that there wasn’t much I could do about the future. Although I would very much like to change a few things, my station meant that much of my life was beyond my control. Damn it.
