Synopsis for this chapter- A hint of WARNING: SLASH, a misunderstanding, and the APOCALYPSE! Well, not exactly, but Valmont meets up with an old 'friend', Devin finds something that isn't hers, and the Chan Clan gets a long-term house guest. I am introducing possible couples in this chapter; let's just see how it goes. Also, it should be a bit faster paced this time through. ^^ (The dialogue between Valmont and his 'old friend' will probably be confusing until it is explained.)
Copyright stuff- Jackie Chan Adventures and all the characters are copyright of Sony Pictures. Well, except for Khaki, Devi, Lor, and some of the random people.
They decided to meet in an abandoned apartment around the center of 'Frisco, but luckily, the building's windows were well-insulated by large pieces of lumber.
"Wotcher, Julius. What a pleasant surprise." The tall man looked over with two different eyes at Valmont, they were both deep, creamy brown; one was full of an indistinguishable emotion, while the other was lifeless, stationary, like a glossy marble. Whether it was actually a marble or not, was questionable.
That eye had always sent involuntary shivers down Valmont's spine, mostly because it was like staring at the eye of a deceased person. "We need to talk, Khaki. What is the bloody deal?" he stated calmly, ignoring the eye which had been damaged by a blow to the head, many years before.
"Survival of the fittest, dearest Julius. What else? I know it seems heartless, but it is the way of the world."
Valmont looked over in disbelief, yet still kept his calm demeanor, yet his brow couldn't stop itself from spasming slightly. "After all these years. And you just decide all of a sudden that it's for 'survival of the fittest'. Bullshit, you bloody git..."
A skinny smirk formed on Khaki's lips. "Do you want me to say that I've been an ickle little tot and that I'm being greedy? Business bites you in the ass, Julius. Of course, you've lived in lavishness most of your life, so you might not have learned that." His voice started rising slightly, in anger. "I am fighting so that my ship doesn't sink, Julius! If you don't want to sink... I suggest that you swim to the lifeboat I am about to send to you."
". . . Where are you getting at, Khaki?"
"What do you think? Become one of my subordinates and you won't have to worry about being penniless, because I am not going to stop what I am doing. Anyways, I couldn't leave an old friend out in the cold. Especially when we've known each other for so long..."
Valmont's brain took a few seconds to register what Khaki was trying to say. A string of sweat slid down his temple when he heard that last sentence leave him. His mouth suddenly became dry with a bitter taste. "I am not one to go back to the past, Khaki."
"I figured you would be stubborn like that," he chuckled. "You must be afraid."
Valmont's face flushed crimson. "Shut up, damn you! I am not- I am not afraid! I just don't- Shut the bloody-fucking-hell up, Khaki!"
Khaki's face grew a cat-like smirk and he sauntered over, as Valmont shrank away ever-so-slightly. "You're being a prude, aren't you?"
Not being able to stand Khaki's sly talk, he extended his arm and punched Khaki's jaw, causing him to stumble.
Khaki moved his jaw around, trying to fix it. Holding it, he glanced over, but he still maintained a devilish grin. "Careful, you may cause it to happen this time."
Valmont knew what Khaki was talking about, and it was bothering him.
"Do you remember what you said after that, Julius?"
Valmont pivoted and strided towards the exit. "We can talk about this later, Khaki."
"So, how much longer are you going to keep your men without actual work? Money doesn't grow on trees, and I am offering you help. You can't tell me you have enough money to distribute salaries AND keep up your lavish living conditions for much longer."
Valmont glanced over his shoulder and stared blankly. "What do you want from me...?" Every word came out forced. "Dear God, you just have to keep on going! Just tell me what you were going to say! I am busy and I don't need you wasting my time!" He knew clearly well why Khaki was acting like this, but was questioning why. And with all of this being brought back to him, his patience was on a thread.
"I want to start a joint project together, but... I want more than that. And I am not taking no for an answer. You'll give in sooner or later, Julius."
"We can talk about this later!" huffed Valmont angrily, as he stalked out the building, slamming the door shut behind him.
------------------------
"So, Jackie, how does it feel now that everything has calmed down a bit?"
Black and Jackie were at the corner pub, downing a few shots. When Jackie was out searching for the talismans, they hadn't really gotten time to kick back and talk.
"It feels like heaven," he replied in his rough English. "Well, minus the-"
He was interrupted by the ringing of his cellphone. He slipped it out of his pocket and pressed the 'talk' button. "Yes? This is Jackie speaking. Tohru?"
The voice on the other side was whispering into the phone. "Jackie, I think there is a little problem."
Jackie's eyes turned slightly serious, afraid Jade had run off and done something reckless. "What is it?"
"Well... Recently, there was a typhoon around my mother's residence..."
"Is she alright?!"
"...Yes. Luckily, she was away on vacation... But her house was... leveled and she has no place to stay. I want to invite her to stay here, but Uncle would never allow-"
"I'm sure Uncle would understand the situation, Tohru. In any case, just talk to your mother and let me take care of Uncle, all right?" assured Jackie in a relaxed voice.
Tohru was silent for a moment, but then a relieved sigh came from the other line. "Thank you, Jackie."
"Don't worry one bit." Jackie smiled slightly. "Talk to you later." He flipped his cellphone closed.
"Hm... Short call. Jackie, is everything okay?"
"Eh... Well, Mama Tohru is going to be staying with us, if that's what you call 'okay'..." sighed Jackie; his expression immediately turned hopeless after the cellphone was shut.
Black spat out his shot with great intensity. "Oh god... You're never going to hear the end of it from Uncle."
"I know......." whined Jackie into the counter, suddenly feeling a comforting pat on his shoulder.
"Well, you know that I'll... er... help. Only if it's absolutely necessary though," he said sheepishly, hoping not to get too involved. "Erk!"
He looked over to see Jackie smiling with misty eyes. "You are a true friend, Augustus!"
"Eh... It's nothin'..." Black felt his face flush slightly out of humbleness.
--------------------
"Well, well. What a surprise," sighed Devi. "No one else is home?" She had found out that she didn't have a shift that day because of the deli owner being sick. "Man, I hope that I still get paid..." She nudged open the door and edged in, just in case the others might be sleeping, but after a thorough look through the suite, she found out that there really was no one else home. 'Well, might as well make the best of the time...' she thought to herself. Sauntering over to the fridge, she opened it up, sifting past alcohol bottles and french onion dip. She swung the door shut. "Gah..." She then decided that perhaps she could get some sleep before everyone else came home, so she made her way to the room. When she got to the door, she stopped silent. Something was peeking from under Hak Foo's bed...
She tiptoed over and knelt down, pulling it out. It was a shoe box, filled with papers and pictures. "What have we here? Pictures?" She stood up, a few of the papers in her hand, and shuffled carefully through them, stopping at a picture of a young child and his parents, with calligraphy scribbled on the backside of it. "...That can't be him..." Devin giggled. The boy had a large grin, with a front tooth missing, and the mother was ruffling his hair, while the father had a serious, yet gentle smile on his face. "Why is he so afraid t-"
Through this time of looking at the picture, Devi had failed to notice footsteps making their way to the room, and she woke to that realization when, shrieking, she felt her back slam against to the wall; two strong hands were tightened around her wrists. When she even dared open her eyes, two angry dark ones were glaring her down. "DROP THEM!" the person barked. It was Hak Foo. Although the way he had her against the wall was rather intimidating, there was no sexual intent in the least. The only thing he cared about was for her to drop those pictures.
Devi could feel the circulation cut from her hands slightly as he squeezed her wrists. Shakily, her thumb and index fingers released from each other, letting the papers drift to the ground like snowflakes. For a minute, all she could do is stare, frightened, at the eyes of the person who was once a smiling child in the picture she saw. She didn't want to look, but she was too afraid to do anything else. All that could be heard was Hak Foo's angry huffs and Devi's shaky breathing. After a long period of silence, Hak Foo opened his mouth. "Never touch any possession of mine. I will kill you if you tell about this." After that, he released his grip on Devi's wrists, and she darted out of the room immediately, but not before tripping once. She immediately made refuge at the couch, and curled up, almost too afraid to sob. Hak Foo weightily glanced down to the floor, where the pictures lay scattered. "Foolish idiot girl."
-----------------------
"Hey, the game is gonna start soon." Finn was talking with the guys as he walked in, and blankly made his way to the couch, slightly tipsy, and then flopped down, only to land on Devin. She immediately sprung into defense mode, shoving her foot in his direction and covering her head, causing him to fall off the couch. "Get away from me!"
"Shit! What was that for?!" shouted Finn, coming out of his tipsy daze.
Devi immediately looked over the side of the couch, and reached out a hand to help him up. There was an ashamed look on her face. "Oh God... I'm sorry... I'm just not feeling-"
After standing up straight, Finn rubbed his smarting stomach, and glanced over. "You don't look too good. You okay?"
Devi fidgeted, embarrassed by making a fool out of herself, and the attention toward her. "I-I think I need some fresh air." With that, she swiftly exited the suite, off to think.
----------------------
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! What in blazes, Jackie?!" Uncle screamed, practically ripping out his hair. Apparently he had just heard the news.
Jackie winced at the shriek, but proceeded at trying to relax him. "U-Uncle... Calm down... I can ex-"
"You better explain!!!"
At the moment, Tohru wasn't home, and was out shopping for things his mother might need when she got there.
Because of this, Jackie was VERY stressed. "Tohru's mom does not have a place to live right now... She needs a place to stay. We are just trying to be hospi-"
"UNCLE DOES NOT WANT TO BE HOSPITABLE TO OLD BAT!!!" Uncle seethed, and then, through clenched teeth, said, "Old Bat cannot stay here very long. Maybe a week. That's it." It was apparent that Uncle was concealing much of his disappointment, and that in itself was kind of scary.
Jackie gave a large sigh of relief. This was the best result he could have hoped for, considering the circumstances. He tipped his head a bit and headed for the door, before hearing "Jackiiiiie..." He turned around, promptly receiving a swat on the head, along with "One mooooore thing."
"What is it, Uncle?"
"Make Uncle tea. LOTS. If Uncle's life will be living hell while Old Bat is here, expect hellish Uncle."
-------------------
"So, how did it go with Uncle?" mumbled Black through a plain bagel with veggie cream cheese.
"Horrible. But that's good... I think. A lot better than I'd have expected. I think he popped an eardrum, though," sighed Jackie, sticking his pinky into his ear. He paused for a moment at the sight of Augustus with a whole bagel wedged in his mouth, trying to write down a memo. It was priceless. Jackie, with his swift demeanor, whipped his cellphone out of his pocket and opened it as if making a call, should Captain Black look. After pressing the photo button, a small flash caught Black's attention. "Jackie!"
Jackie feigned a look of innocence. "What is it, Augustus?" he said, with a hint of laughter in his voice. He had to use self-restraint not to cover his mouth and start chuckling.
"I know what you did. Delete it," stated Black in a insistent yet disconcerted manner.
"What? Are you embarrassed that I'll use it for blackmail?"
For a second time in the last day or two, Black's cheeks were tinged in a slightly rosy hue. "N-no. Just delete it. It's embarrassing."
"But we've been friends for so long. Should it matter?" Jackie didn't usually take such leisure in teasing people, but he had known Black for so long, that he felt comfortable enough to do it every once in a while. It's not like he was never teased back.
Augustus sighed in defeat. "I guess not. But you sure as hell better not show that to anybody, Jackie." The pinkish hue still held strong in his cheeks; his face felt warm.
Jackie's expression shifted to a slightly worried look. "Augustus, are you feeling okay? You've been looking a bit flushed lately... Perhaps you should take the day off?"
At this, Black took a stiff bite from his bagel and swallowed. "I'm fine." He wasn't about to pull up some lame excuse about the air conditioning, but he couldn't muster up anything else to say but those two words.
Jackie put a hand on his shoulder, and gave him a smile. "You work very hard. You need rest. Let me take care of stuff for once. I know I'm not certified, but I'm pretty sure that I could keep things going for you."
Augustus' lips couldn't help but curl the slightest bit, in a soft way, when he heard Jackie speak. "Still as thoughtful as ever, aren't we?"
Jackie bit his lip humbly. "I like to think of myself that way... But I do mean it though. I'm just doing my job as a friend."
"You're a good guy, Chan." He patted him on the arm. "You better go and take advantage of the free time you have left. You did say that Tohru's mother was going to arrive tomorrow, right?"
"Yes. And you're right. It is probably a good idea. But I'd rather spend my time with someone than spend it alone. I was wondering if you wanted to go to the pub again after you get off work? It's one of the reasons I came." Jackie scratched the back of his neck, hoping for a positive response. With all the stuff he was going to have to deal with, he didn't want to be alone at the last bit of free time he had. After a few seconds of silence, a query spilled from Jackie's mouth. It was rather unexpected though. "Does that make me childish? Not... wanting to be alone?"
Black looked over silently. Words were just hard to escape his mouth right now, which was dry. Why did today feel so weird? He thought he knew, but he tried pushing the thought away. Finally, he managed an answer. "Of... course not, Jackie. I think that," he ran his hand over his bald forehead. "I think that it's normal for people to not want to be alone. And the type of work I make you do, I don't blame you... for feeling that way. It's probably part of what causes it."
"Don't look so glum, Augustus. Don't you think that I would have quit and run away already if I couldn't handle the job?"
Black felt more relieved. He glanced down at his memo, only to remember that he got no more than a sentence or two written down. He looked up and laughed slightly. "I'll go to the pub with you. I just reeaaally need to get some memos done."
--------------------------
Devi scrunched up on a bench at the park, spacily staring out at the night's smog. It was around two o'clock in the morning by the time that she looked at her watch. Not a totally safe time, but she had a switchblade and a handgun with her, not that she planned to use them, of course. The whole event from earlier weighed down on her mind. 'I was being so stupid... Looking in someone else's stuff... And out of all peoples', it had to be Hak's... But... How could such an happy-looking kid turn out to be... him? Devi's eyes watered. He's never gonna trust me again... I fucking blew it... But... There's... only one thing that I can really do... I'm not going to sleep in the living room for the next year.' She got up and made her way back to the suite.
-------------------------
Knock, knock. No answer. Hak was probably in there anyways. It was close to three in the morning. If he wasn't there, he was probably off doing some small surveillance or lackey work.
Devi opened up the door and took a deep breath, looking over towards Hak's bed. He was sitting on it, naturally, not doing much of anything, except for thinking deeply. At that moment, she felt her throat close. She almost couldn't breathe. He was doing nothing, yet fear was overcoming her. Nonetheless, she spoke up. "H-H-Hak Foo."
He look over with sharp eyes, not saying a word.
"I... was wrong. I had no business in y-your belongings. It was stupid o-of me. I am stupid. I know I've lost your trust and I don't expect you to ever trust me again. Those were very personal items of yours... weren't they?" As she let the words out, for some reason, her eyes started burning, and tears started to gush out of them. "I'm sorry!"
"You are a foolish woman, and know no better. Yet, you must regain my trust now. I cannot trust you, if you mess with matters that are not yours," Hak Foo claimed in a quiet yet hard voice, still staring off.
Devi paused, and her brows arched as her tears came to a temporary stop. "What are you suggesting, Hak Foo? Not all women are like that." Her voice became a bit more fierce. "Sure, I may be one of the stupid ones, but it is not because I am a woman." Her voice rose during that sentence. "It is because that's part of who I am!"
Hak was still staring out in deep thought, and it looked as if he wasn't listening. Either that, or he just didn't give a rat's ass.
The tears started to pour again, and she wasn't going to attempt to rile him up with an insult, because she knew that his wit and strength surpassed her greatly, and the last thing she wanted was for him to get even more pissed at her. She flopped onto her bed and faced the wall, trying to stop her pathetic crying. At least she still had a chance to gain his trust again.
-------------------------
Valmont tapped his fingers on his desk and shivered slightly from the temperature of the Fish Cannery. He had tried for hours on end to think of ways to get jobs without the help of Khaki, and that was seeming pretty hard right now. 'I can't believe I've been brought down to this pathetic level... Khaki, you git...' Monetary matters weren't the only thing bothering Valmont. What was really bothering him was the PRIMARY SOURCE of the whole problem.
Ring. Valmont picked up the phone absentmindedly and habitually answered it with a pestered "What do you want, Ratso?"
"Dearie me, I don't sound like that buffoon, do I?"
"...Khaki. What do you want?"
"Hm..." The voice playfully sighed. "There are many things in this world that I want. And I'm sure I've mentioned a few to you already."
Yet again, the sweat reappeared. "You're really persistent, aren't you?" snapped Julius.
"I am merely trying to help a dear old friend," Khaki cooed from the receiver.
". . ." Valmont was at a loss for words. He 'dearly' wished not to be talking to Khaki, and he sighed, somewhat defeated, with only a slight shred of hope in his hands, even if it was very meager. "Give me a week... Let me prove that I don't need you. And... If I can't do it, I'll join your group..." His head stung; he couldn't believe he was speaking so pathetically. He rested his forehead in his hands, and put the phone on speaker phone. "Anything else that you want to hear, you git?" he moaned through clenched teeth.
"You really have changed, Julius. There is one thing. I want us to quit arguing. We never used to argue like this."
"Can you just SHUT UP about the past? I prefer our business relationship. We're not in college anymore," hissed Valmont in a sharp tone.
"Frankly, I'm hurt," replied Khaki from the other line. "You don't seem to care anymore. Even though you did, those last few days. You just want to toss away a perfectly good friendship away because of a couple of stupid mistakes?"
Valmont, at this point, had his face pressed against the desk with his hands on the back of his head. The phrase 'those last few days' was running through his head. He lifted his head up slightly, so he could speak to the speaker phone. "Shut up and forget about it. Shut up about everything. Those mistakes were more than stupid..." His eyes were bloodshot.
"Why haven't you hung up yet, if you are so bothered?"
His eyes started to burn. Those last few days... "Just leave me alone, you idiotic buffoon!"
"The phone is right there. Just hang up."
Valmont picked up the phone, in almost a gentle way, and then, savagely ripped it from the wall and hurled it across the room with a warrior-like shriek. "DIE! DIE! JUST DIE!" He grabbed his forehead, yet again, seething. "Why didn't I hang up before...?"
-----------------------------
"Thank you sho much for shpending time with me in my lasht daysh of freedom, Augushtush... You are alwaysh there when I need you..." gurgled Jackie feebly from a mug. He had clearly become quite tipsy, perhaps drunk.
Captain Black cocked an eyebrow. "Uh... Jackie..."
"When, when I die... I wan' be cremated, okay?"
"Jackie, what are you t-"
"And I wanna be dumped over Shection Th-"
Black slapped his hand over Jackie's mouth before the word came out the rest of the way. Nervously laughing, he let go of Jackie's mouth, hoping that he wouldn't try any monkey business. "Are you sure you need any more of that, Jackie?"
"Yesh... 'Nother pleesh!"
Black paused. Jackie must have been really stressed to be drinking this much. Perhaps there was also stuff that he was keeping from him? Nonetheless, he decided to get Jackie out of the bar before he got a worse hangover than he needed. He hoisted him up, under the arms, after handing the bartender his due and drug Jackie out, who, after practically no trouble, fell quickly asleep. 'Damn, he's light...'
------------------------------
Black decided to take Jackie back to Section Thirteen until he got better. He dumped him onto one of the couches in the Rec Room and flopped into a separate chair, giving a huff. It had already taken at least an hour and a half to bring him back.
Despite the pain he would probably have when he awoke, right now Jackie had the most peaceful look upon his face. He mumbled a bit and turned onto his stomach on the couch.
Black calmly looked over to where Jackie lay, and couldn't help but chuckle a bit. 'Jackie, you are such a dork.' He was thinking about how much more happy Jackie was, now that he didn't have to be worried about the talismans. During the whole talisman fiasco, Jackie had lost a lot of weight, and had been very stressed. An idea popped into Black's head. He decided that he was going to try and get Jackie's weight back up and help him as much as possible so he wouldn't stress too much. After all, he was such a good old friend. In fact, he was VERY important to Black. God knew that Jackie always showed concern and compassion when needed, and cared deeply for him and for his own family. Black wondered, 'Does Jackie consider me family?' Still glancing at Jackie, he stood up and walked over. "Jackie. Don't ever change, alright?" He got a huffed yawn as a reply. He looked down at him. A sleeping Asian angel. "Ja... ckie..." A sudden jolt went through his body as he felt himself reach down and brush Jackie's bangs out of his face. "Oh god... If you wake up..." he shuddered as he felt his face grow closer to Jackie's. Jackie's breath reeked of alcohol, but that wasn't apparent to him right now. He gently brought his lips to those of Jackie, whose eyes fluttered open about a second into the lip-lock.
Jackie was surprisingly sober at this moment, although his head stung, but he did not notice that at the moment. “A-Augustus?!”
Black screamed and shot back, stumbling into the chair he had been sitting in. His face was crimson, and his glance darted to the side. He had no alibi for what he was doing. He was pretty much screwed.
“Augustus...” Jackie was at a loss for words.
The only sound heard in the room for the next few minutes was the sound of the air vent.
“Were you... trying to take advantage of me?” shivered Jackie, glancing down as his face flushed in embarrassment and confusion. “I... didn't know that you-”
Black's face, still burning, contorted slightly as he interrupted Jackie immediately. “No! I would never do something like that! It-it-it... was just a.... a kiss. I don't have some lame excuse to cover it up, Jackie... It was a kiss... I... have to go.” He was so ashamed, his voice sounded almost cold during the last sentence. He stood up quickly and was about to make his way to the door.
“Wait.”
Black looked over.
“I'm sorry... That I didn't notice... Augustus.” Jackie got up and walked over to him. “Why didn't you tell me?”
Black mumbled. “You're kidding... You were always so stressed... And this would be even more stressful for you. I'm not going to cause you any trouble, so just forget abou-”
Black was interrupted by Jackie, who immediately kissed him, causing him to stumble back into the chair.
“Chan...”
“Augustus. I first realized how much I cared for you after you ended up in the hospital... I had thought that you were going to die... You are such a wonderful friend and I don't want anything to happen to you, ever!” Jackie started getting misty-eyed. He planted a soft, innocent kiss on Black's lips.
Returning the kiss, Black overcame him, softly grabbing Jackie's wrist, bringing them both to their knees on the floor. Both of them shivered. “Jackie, I-”
Jackie's cellphone rang, causing him to jump. He pulled it out and answered. “Hello? This is J-Jackie...”
“Jackieeeeee! Get home! Old Bat is coming soon!”
“...Yes Uncle.” He closed his cellphone and stared back into Black's eyes. “Y... You were saying something, Augustus?”
“N-n-no...” shivered Black.
Jackie smirked softly. “Would you stay with us? We'll need some help, and you said you would help, Black.”
“S-stay with you?” The equation went through Black's head. Uncle+Tohru's Mom....+Jade?=Freakish Hell... “You're going to need all the help you can get...” he said, kind of nervous. “Well, all right. I don't want to impose or anything.”
Jackie looked over with a pleading look. “Of course you won't be imposing!”
Black could tell that Jackie was desperate for some company. “Don't worry, Jackie. We'll make it through this alive.”
“Thank you, Augustus!!!!!!” Jackie cried out, embracing Black.
“You're welcome, and... please don't choke me...” chuckled Black.
END CHAPTER 2~!
A/N- I hope that the end of the chapter doesn't seem too stupid. I have a reason for them realizing that they care about each other: The episode where Valmont uses the Dragon Talisman and in the process, Cap'n Black ends up in the hospital. As you saw, throughout the rest of the episode, whenever Jackie heard something mentioned about Black getting hurt, he'd blow a fuse and attempt to destroy something. Heaven knows that's not Jackie's true nature. It had to be something pretty important to get him to do that. Anyways, I hope the chapter was enjoyable. ^_____^ Also, Mama Tohru will actually show up in the next chapter. Till then, see ya!
