CHAPTER 1
Are we there yet?
No...
How 'bout now?
Its been five minutes, what do you think?
...Yes?
NO!
He was blessed with fifteen minutes of silence before the voice spoke up once more.
Now?
N- He was cut off when the Voot Cruiser beeped at him and let him know that they were entering hailing range of the Armada. Which was exactly what was happening. The small screen in front of him lit up as a Communications Officer on board the Massive linked up with his old Cruiser. Behind the bored looking officer he could see the shocked orbs of the Tallest staring at him. He grinned and then decided it might be a good idea to pay attention.
"-class Voot Cruiser, please respond." The officer rattled of uncaringly, not even bothering to look at the screen displayed above him. It was so routine that he had stopped caring long ago.
"I have come to present the Tallest with a token from the bounties of my mission!" Zim blathered out, not caring what he had to say to get on the ship before him. All he needed was to see the Tallest in person and he could set everything straight.
"Eh, that's alright Zim. We'd appreciate it if you just continued on your mission on uhm, what was it? Earth? Yes, just go back and make sure to doom it properly," Purple babbled out, waving frantically as the crimson Tallest behind him stared at the screen menacingly.
"Actually, why don't you come aboard Zim? We can have a... detailed discussion of your success. In private," Red said sinisterly. Leaning back the darker looking Tallest snagged a soda and sipped as he waited for a reply from the shocked looking Invader on the screen.
"Yes, my Tallest!" Zim snapped out delightedly, saluting and cutting the connection with a sigh. There was still a large grin on his face. He was getting onto the Massive and the Tallest were going to speak to him in person, away from everyone else. It was pure luck, though the dark look that had passed across Tallest Red's face had left his squeedlyspooch in knots, he ignored it for the time. He could worry about himself after he got the voice back to where he belonged.
Well that certainly sounded good. Not.
Shut up, its getting us onto the ship so I can fix you. Keeping his concentration on flying he carefully moved his Voot towards the docking bay until the Massive's guiding beams locked on and dragged him aboard.
How do you plan on doing that anyway?
Eh, it would take to long to explain. Just make sure all of you is in my PAK. Wouldn't want to be split into more pieces now would you? As he replied he began to discreetly pull everything that made him who he was out of his PAK. While normally doing such a thing was foolish as a PAK was there to reinforce personal memories and other such things, he had to worry about keeping himself seperate from the other entity in his PAK.
Irk no!
Zim could feel small tendrils of the other pulling away, receding into the PAK. It was a disturbing feeling, the touch of another's very SOUL pulling away, especially after being entwined with the other for so long now. He had gotten used to keeping his own soul mostly in his body so it wasn't to bad for him.
There was silence as he stepped out of his Voot as was escorted into a room, usually used for simple meetings. Nervously he waited, squishing the urge to pace. When the door hissed open he spun into a salute, carefully undoing the catches on his PAK until only one remained.
"Hello Zim," Purple purred, stalking in with a feral grin on his face. He was followed shortly by his crimson partner who wore a vicious smirk. Together they moved, imitating each other eerily as the door closed with the same hiss that it opened with. They separated, Red going to a small window while the violet one hovered over to stand before Zim with a sneer.
Crimson eyes flashed at the window and he stared out, speaking in a calm manner that hid his fury very well. "So Zim, have you figured it out yet?"
Be careful, it looks like Red is in one of his moods...
Silence, I need to keep my wits about me here.
"Figured it out my Tallest?" Zim made sure to tinge his voice with confusion though he was pretty sure he knew what the crimson leader was talking about. He kept his eyes darting between the two, making sure that Red wasn't paying attention and waiting for a moment when the other would let his guard down.
"You're so pathetic.... think all this time that you really were an Invader sent on an important mission..." Red chuckled mercilessly as he grinned out at the blackness. He could practically feel the words sink in, wanting to turn and watch the despair surface but he kept it in knowing to savour it.
"Yeah! How could anyone have fallen for that? Hey look, a monie!" Purple rambled happily, crouching to grab the shiny coin. Behind the violet Tallest, Zim grinned and undid the last catch on his PAK and stepped forward until he was right behind the much taller Irken.
Hey what're you doi-?! The voice was cut off as he pulled his PAK off, carefully maneuvering. He was directly behind the crouching violet Tallest, and could finally reach the purple spotted PAK. Quickly he snapped two of the connectors and pulled, the Tallest's PAK coming off with strange ease.
Purple's body instantly became lifeless the second that his PAK was removed, slumping to the ground with a ominous thud. The sound prompted Red to turn just in time to see Zim place his PAK in place of the violet Tallest's. Snarling he leaped forward, angry and furious and so many other things that it was to much for him to feel. So he acted. Striking blindly he backhanded the menace into a wall and went to deal with his friend first. Zim's body was PAK-less and if left alone would die. His priority needed to be getting the ex-Invader's PAK off of his friend. He had ten minutes to remove it before Zim's mind and personality would over take his violet friend.
Purple groaned and squirmed, blinking for the first time in many a long years. Feeling hands on his back near his PAK he rolled over, crouching instinctively into a defensive position. He was surprised to see his co-Tallest, looking just as shocked as he felt.
"Red, what're you doing?" Purple asked carefully, keeping an eye on the other while he scanned the room for Zim. Where had the little Invader gotten to?
"What am I doing? Come here so I can take Zim's PAK off! That little defect finally really snapped!" Red ordered frantically, standing and reaching out for his friend. He was shocked that the other was up and functioning so well with another's PAK on his back.
"Bwha?" Purple turned his head and looked down to see that Zim's PAK was indeed on his back, small and unassuming on his much larger form. He was startled out of his staring when he felt a gentle hand rest on his shoulder and he spun, knocking the hand away. "Where is he?!"
"We can take care of him late Pur! Right now you need to give me a minute so I can save you!" Red cried out desperately, reaching for the other once more.
Purple backed away and scanned the room, finally finding Zim curled in a corner. Rushing over he ignored his friend in favour of assessing the one who had helped him in ways that no one could ever know.
Weakly Zim looked up, having heard the two scuffle for some time. Tired dark pink eyes locked onto worried violet and it made him smile. Purple was back to himself and perfectly safe. Good. He smiled weakly, trying to stand so that he could salute but he was strangely exhausted, he had only been without his PAK for two minutes at worst.
"You idiot! What were you thinking?! You're going to die!" Purple ranted, leaning down and pulling the smaller one to his feet. He knew he was freaking out but the shorter one was behaving strange. It was life-threatening to an Irken to be without their PAK but it usually was much farther into the ten minute count down that such symptoms presented themselves.
"Had to save you," Zim whispered honestly, smiling proudly up at the worrying Tallest. He stood shakily and knew that he didn't have much time. For some reason he could feel that his time was shorter than it should be. Maybe it was because he had pulled everything into his body, forcing more onto it than it was used to dealing with.
"WHAT ON IRK IS GOING ON?!" Red bellowed, having watched and heard everything. He just had no idea what was going on. It seemed like Purple might actually care about the little defect. That and had no concern for his own dwindling safety. It made him twitch and fume and well, he finally screamed.
"Shut up Red, this doesn't concern you!" Purple growled and made his way over to where his PAK lay. He stared at it morbidly for a moment before shuddering and sitting down, pulling Zim with him. "And you, you need to hold on..." Placing one hand on the shorter's brow and the other on his own PAK he settled down and concentrated. He had to do this quickly, before it was too late...
Zim squirmed at the foreign touch, grimacing when his body only responded half-heartedly. A cough racked through his body and he could feel blood dribble from between his lips. Clenching his eyes shut he tried not to think about the pain that was going to be coming. Already it was beginning to become intolerable, his squeedlyspooch spazmiming and his muscles locking and unlocking. Creaking his eyes open he could see the crimson Tallest wringing his hands and glaring down at him.
Meanwhile Purple was focusing as best he could, pulling and searching. Every memory, sensation and feeling he pulled into himself. Reaching deeper he grabbed at the glowy thing that floated in his mind scape, siphoning it into his body. He wiggled uncomfortably at the feeling of having his soul in his body. It wasn't where it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be in his PAK, but the PAK on his back wasn't his PAK. Clearing his mind he pressed the wandering thoughts away and resumed his download.
Dark pink eyes shot wide open as blood suddenly filled his mouth. Coughing he gurgled and struggled to breath, turning his head so that gravity could help him. It made it a little easier and while he still couldn't breath properly he could get enough to realize that his thoughts weren't clouding as they should. It was a disturbing thought that he would remember everything as his body slowly died. A sobering blow to his ego, body wrenching as seizures wracked him.
Red paced, watching Zim die one of the most horrible deaths for an Irken to go through. He glanced from the tiny menace to his height equal, worry eating at him. The violet eyed Irken was sitting so still and he could hear awful sounds coming from the pink PAK connected to him. Beside the purple garbed one he could see the violet spotted PAK laying peacefully, not trying to attach itself to a new host.... it made his eyes narrow. Why wasn't Purple's PAK behaving normally, for that matter, why wasn't Zim's? Clenching his fists he decided that he would wait one more minute before he did anything. Something was going on.... and he was getting annoyed.
So close, but something kept dodging away from him, hiding deeper and deeper in the PAK. Taking a deep breath he delved back, determined to catch the last little bit of himself. Chasing it for what felt like hours he finally cornered it, grasping it and pulling it into himself. He gasped as a strange emotion filled him, burning into his mind. Shaking his head he opened his eyes to see Red pacing and Zim looking as if he had only seconds to live.
A squeak came from him and he reached back, unhooking Zim's PAK and letting it drop into his waiting hand, rolling the much smaller Irken onto his back, Purple gently placed it against the connectors. A relieved sigh escaped him as he heard the distinct 'shink' of metal sliding together.
He pulled his own PAK back on, already starting to feel woozy without a PAK to ground him. He turned his attention back to the one that lay at his knees, blood pooling around both of them. And he watched horrified as the Invader's dark pink eyes slipped closed and he lay perfectly still.
