“Uuuhg! I’ll never get this!” Kevin all but screamed as he shoved his fingers through his flaming red hair, his cap long forgotten on the floor behind him, shoved off not five minutes into his homework. He paid attention, he took notes, he followed along with the book, and he still didn’t get it! He had understood it perfectly in class, why couldn’t he solve the problems?!
“Is there a problem Kevin?” Oh yeah, maybe that’s why; his distracting roommate Edd. The dork was in an apron, bustling around the kitchen humming some exasperatingly cheery tune probably composed by some long dead musician with a long aristocratic name and depressing background history that if he made the unfortunate mistake of commenting, he would learn all about.
Kevin sat at the kitchen table, his notes, book, and homework assignments laid out before him in obvious disarray. His uniform’s sleeves were rolled up to the elbows as he always wore them and his tie had long ago been chucked aside. Running his fingers through his hair in the hopes of returning it to some form of style he turned a tight, frustrated smile toward his roommate and ground through his teeth. “Nope, everything’s good. Just a little homework problem.”
Edd smiled knowingly, whipping his wands on a towel tucked perfectly in his apron pocket. He was busying himself with cooking dinner for they’re arriving guests. Once a week, one gad damn day of every week, Edd would invite a legion of students to have dinner at their dorm-house thing. Whatever you called the places they lived in. And Kevin had to deal with the shouting, and the talking, and the annoying attempts at trying to make friends with him. He just wanted to finish this school year and go home to his group where they could discuss the various ways the world would ultimately end.
If he sounded a little unstable, maybe that was because everybody in the damn world annoyed him.
“Maybe you’re just not working on the appropriate side of your brain.” Edd stated as he got back to work and food preparation. He knew Kevin hated these dinner nights, but he couldn’t really help him with that problem. He always invited his friends over for dinner once a week, all the years he’s lived here, going to this school, learning with these people, he had always offered them one night’s respite from the usual gruel and junk food they consumed on a daily basis. Kevin had never complained, but it was obvious it troubled him.
“And what is that supposed to mean.” Kevin shot back, clearly aggravated.
“It means you’re probably stuck on the opposite side of the brain you’re supposed to use to work. You see there are two separate sides of the brain, the right side, and the left side. Each are used for different activities. You’re most likely on the wrong side, so you can’t get work done. It happens to me once in a while.” Edd opened up the cupboard and took out a stack of plates.
“So what am I supposed to do, flip a switch on the inside of my skull?”
“Just keep yourself busy with other activities. Take a small break. You can start by setting the table.” He handed Kevin the stack of plates and began gathering up the strewn papers into some semblance of order. “Our guests will be arriving soon.”
“Your guests will be arriving. I’m just gonna eat and go to bed. Is it possible to skip over everything and just take my dinner in my room?” Kevin asked as he set out the plates in their usual order.
“Nope, no eating anywhere but at the table.” Edd announced cheerily, removing the blue stainless apron and hanging it back on its hook in the pantry. It was the usual conversation they had, never changing, never faltering. Every week. Not an argument per say, but as close as they ever had to one in the months they had known each other.
There was a rap on the door, a rhythmic knock that could belong to only one person.
Kevin groaned inwardly and Edd hurried to answer the door with a plastered smile.
“Eddy’s here.” They announced in unison before the door was kicked open.

Well, here’s another chapter, terribly sorry for the shortness. I had a limited time to do this. The rest of the cast will be introduced in the next chapter, probably up tomorrow. Oh, and sorry if Kevin is sounding a bit emo, someone pointed that out on Gaia. I didn’t mean for him to seam like that. He’s based on my girlfriends attitude, a kind of sarcastic “the worlds gonna end and I’m just along for the ride” kind of thing. He isn’t just a depressed angsty teen I swear! You’ll see that in the next chapter.
To my wonderful commentors!
Taylor L: I was in a similar situation when the inspiration hit me for this. All the fics I was reading were either poorly written or on hiatus. So I sat down and wrote this, I’m glad to have helped. I hope you enjoy this update, I had fun writing it.
