'I can't really be depressed.' thought Sissi about an hour later, in a class, but the teacher's voice just sounded like a random background noise to her.
'Can I?'
That night, after dinner she was reading a book on Chinese medicine and philosophy. Since learning Silat, she had also become curious about the various philosophies surrounding it. Her desire to learn more about pressure points had lead her to acupuncture and subsequently, Chinese medicine.
As she read through the section about depression, she furrowed her brow a bit... The stuff in here was hard to believe, and yet at the same time, it also made sense. It basically said that depression is caused by an accumulation of unfulfilled desires, and subsequently one's inability to deal with the disappointment, which causes a stagnation in the liver's chi... blah blah.
The important thing, the root cause... unfulfilled desires. She just could not ignore it. What unfulfilled desires did she have?
Ulrich! Well, yes... but that was only so that she could become popular and...
Then it suddenly dawned on her! She had become so obsessed with the boy that she had lost track of almost everything else. All she wanted to do was be liked and accepted by everyone. Instead, in the frantic effort to make Ulrich go out with her, she had become a bitch to everyone.
'He doesn't like me... there's no way he's going to like me. He'll never like me.' she told herself at last, when she decided to be honest with herself
'How and when did I lose touch with reality so badly?' asking a question that had no right or wrong answer.
She had trouble sleeping that night, tossing and turning and thinking a lot. But by morning time, she had her mind made up.
Before school had even started, she marched right up to Ulrich. The problem was, he was surrounded by his usual posse. “Um... Ulrich, can I talk to you?” she asked hesitantly.
“Why? So that you can swoon and pass out in his arms?” cackled Odd.
Yumi glared at him. She hated Sissi for being a such a bitch to her, but she understood the concept of going too far.
Sissi gritted her teeth, nostrils flaring and her eyes starting to tear up. She was really trying to hold back, but it looked like she was having trouble doing it.
“No!” she finally cried out, “I wanted to tell him that I don't like him. I don't like him at all! I don't care if he dropped dead right now! And I don't want to go out with him! I'll never, ever try to go out with him. You hear that, Ulrich! I'll never, ever try to get you to go out with me! I'll never let my obsession for you define me anymore, because I'm giving up my obsession! You don't exist to me anymore!” and with that, she turned and ran off, sobbing loudly.
“Ouch!” said Odd, scratching a cheek with his index finger. “Sorry I said anything.”
“Ulrich?” asked Yumi hesitantly, almost uncertainly.
He shrugged, “I don't care,” walking off towards the school.
She frowned a little, and then walked off in the opposite direction.
Odd looked after Ulrich, and then Yumi before finally asking, “Why doesn't he say anything? Or if he's determined to be stubborn, why doesn't she say anything? I mean, what's the big deal? The whole world knows that they have a thing for each other.”
Jeremie and Aelita looked at each other before Aelita spoke out, “Well, who knows? Maybe they're both too stubborn, determined to not be the first to say anything. Or maybe we're reading into the situation too much. Maybe they don't like each other as much as we think.”
Jeremie nodded, “Indeed. It's possible that we see their reactions of jealousy to mean that they like each other, when it could simply be overreactions, respectively inappropriate to the individual situations.”
“Err..?” Odd asked, sounding thoroughly confused.
Aelita giggled, “He means basically what I said: we're probably reading into it too much. Still, the ultimate test is the test of time. If they're right for each other, we'll know in due time. All of us.”

Meanwhile, Sissi was in her dorm room, crying.
Why..? Why weren't things working out for her? She wanted to take a step to improve her life, and her relations with other people. But why were they all determined to hate her? What kind of a sin had she committed, that was unforgivable?
Would she ever be happy again?
Milly, who happened to be passing by that particular dorm room paused as she heard the crying. She didn't know whose dorm it it was, so she knocked on it.
“What do you want?” asked Sissi's voice from within.
The younger girl let herself in, wondering at the same time if she was about to regret what she was about to do. “Um... are you alright?” she said, approaching her cautiously, as if expecting her to flip out.
Sissi turned away from her, wiping her eyes, “What do you care? Don't you hate me too?”
Milly paused a moment, “Right now... I'm more worried about you, than anything else. What's wrong?”
The question seemed to renew her crying, she sobbed louder and hid her face in her hands. “They..” she attempted to speak anyway, “I... I just wanted to say sorry, and try to make things okay. But instead, I've made everything worse.”
This, understandably, made little Milly more confused. She put a hand on the older girl's shoulder, “Aww... come on, it can't be that bad.” she said in what she hoped was a soothing voice. She grasped a tissue with her free hand from the tissue box nearby, and handed it to Sissi. “Here..”
She took it and wiped her tears. “Thanks Milly.” she said before wrapping her arms around her.
Milly blinked. It wasn't the sudden nature of the hug that surprised her, but the person who was hugging her. She never expected Sissi, of all people to ever be hugging her. She smiled and wrapped her arms around the older girl, returning the hug gently.
When Sissi finally pulled away, Milly asked, “Are you sure you'll be alright?” looking into her eyes.
The older girl smiled wryly and nodded, “Yeah, I think I'll be alright.” her eyes looking red and a little swollen, face flushed from crying.
Milly nodded in turn. She wasn't entirely convinced, but her first class was only five minutes away so she needed to get going. “Um... I'll talk to you during lunchtime, alright?”
Sissi wiped her tears and nodded again. She then heard Milly walk out of her room and close the door.
She felt a little taken aback, even alarmed at how... calm she suddenly felt. It was as if someone had re-aligned two of her vertebral discs that had been out of place for a long time. She felt that some kind of empty space, a vacuum had been filled up in her life. Was it because the crying had been a cathartic experience? Or because she felt like someone actually cared about her?
Well, whatever the reason, she also realized that she was running late for class and she needed to hurry.
From that morning forward, Sissi was determined to behave civilly towards everyone. She wasn't so concerned with being popular, or even if people liked her. She just wanted to be a good person.
Even at lunch, when she encountered Odd et al, she simply smiled and said, “Good afternoon. How are you all?”
They all gave the usual, bored “alright”, “just fine”, “not bad.”
“Good to hear.” she responded, “Well, enjoy your lunch. I'll see you around.” she said before walking away to sit down at an empty lunch table.
“Er... what was that all about?” asked a confused Odd.
“I don't know...” said Yumi, glancing towards Ulrich but not saying anything else.
“It is my observation that her personality, attitude, and behavior are undergoing profound changes.” remarked Jeremie.
Aelita nodded, “It would appear so.”

“Herve, Nick...” Sissi began, regarding the two boys who were sitting opposite her on her lunch table. “Listen, can you do me a favor and just...” she sighed, “Alright, first of all... I'm really sorry that I bossed you around and manipulated you and... you guys have been really good friends to me. Thank you.”
But neither of them was saying anything. They just looked at each other before turning to her and staring at her.
“Hey Sissi! How are you?” chimed Milly as she waved to her.
“Um... I'm alright.” she said, looking in her direction, “I'll talk to you in a sec. Hang on...”
She then turned to her 'friends' and sighed again. “Look, could you please do me and yourselves a favor and stop following me around? Get a hobby, join a band, play an after-school sport, get a girlfriend... I don't know. It's not like I hate you and can't stand your company. But the truth is, there's nothing between us. Other than me controlling and bossing you around. So, just... get away from me and have fun!”
And with that, she stood up and turned away from them, leaving the two looking like helpless pups whose mother had just abandoned them. They looked at each other with confused expressions. Now that they had lives of their own, they weren't sure where or how to begin.
Sissi heard Milly call out to her, “Hey Sissi! Wanna come sit with us?”
She turned and looked at the table. In junior high, being seen keeping company with younger students was social suicide. But Sissi wanted to make it a point that she didn't care.
She sat down next to Milly, Tamiya opposite her, and on that table were a bunch of other girls in their grade that Sissi didn't recognize. They all talked, joked, laughed and had a great time. Now that Sissi thought about it, she hadn't had any female friends since the start of junior high. It was like she had been zombified the whole time, and only now was she returning to the world of the living.
“Sissy..?” called out one of the girls, just as the older one was getting up, ready to leave.
“Yeah?” she responded with a smile.
“We're all having a pajama party this Saturday. Wanna come?” she offered.
Sissy gasped, “Wow... really?” It's true that they were two grades lower than her. But she actually had friends who wanted to hang out with her. She didn't care what anyone might think or say. “Sure, I'll be happy to come.” she said honestly.
“Cool! We'll see you there!” Tamiya called out.
“Bye Sissi! Catch you later!” Milly chimed happily, waving to her.
Odd stared at her. “Was that Sissi? Hanging out with fifth-graders?”
Ulrich nodded, “Looks like it.”
Odd turned to Jeremie, “Hey, are you sure this isn't caused by a Xana attack?”
Before the genius could respond, Yumi shrugged, “Well, better her hanging out with younger kids than getting in our hair.”
***********************************************************************************
That night, Sissy did not have any strange or disturbing dreams. She slept like a baby through the night, peacefully and serenely. When she woke up in the morning, she was really looking forward to the day. She was in such a good mood that no one was afraid to approach her. When they did approach her, they'd learn that she wasn't the bitch they were used to seeing. As a consequence, she ended up making several new friends that day. Instead of reading beauty magazines, she was paying attention in class and volunteered often whenever the teacher asked questions. She wasn't a genius like Jeremie, so she didn't get every answer right, but her teachers were happy to see her participating and trying nonetheless.
“Wow... I have to say that I'm impressed,” the school principal was saying to the school nurse. They were in his office, he was sitting in his chair, and she was in the chair opposite the desk.
“But I didn't do anything, really. I just assured her that I trust her, and that she can come talk to me if she needs to.” Yolande responded.
“Yes, but the change in her attitude is remarkable. Her teachers tell me that she's doing very well in all of her classes. But more importantly, she looks happy.” he insisted.
“Well, I'm glad.” she said simply.
“How about I write to the Board for a raise for you?” he asked.
“Mr. Delmas, under most circumstances, I'd be more than happy to accept. But right now, I'm afraid I'll have to say no.”
Jean-Pierre blinked. “What? Why not.”
“Because...” she said, standing up, “With all due respect, sir. I do not want to be held responsible for your daughter's happiness, academic performance, or anything else! When I became a nurse, I swore to protect the health of my patients to the best of my ability. But I can't be made responsible for them. And also with all due respect, sir: Please refrain from using me as an intermediary between yourself and your daughter, to compensate for the short-circuit of your fractured relationship with her.”
With that, she turned on her heels and strode out of the office, closing the door behind her and leaving her boss alone with his own thoughts.
