The next morning, Zuko awoke to find himself alone in bed. Had last night been a dream? The misplaced chair and smell of perfume told him, No.
A pounding on his door dragged him out of bed, his sheet around his waist. "What?"
"Does this belong to you, sir?" A guard was holding Mitsukai by the arm, her bag in his other hand, and she looked like she was about to rip his face off. Then, she looked at Zuko, smiled and waved.
"Hi." She laughed.
"I found her near the engine chamber." He jostled her and she scowled at him with a death glare.
"I was looking for the bathroom. I got lost," she said indignantly. "How should I know where anything is?"
"Let her go," Zuko ordered him. "She was hired for the night."
The guard let go of her arm and handed her the bag. "If she was hired for the night, shouldn't she be leaving? Night is over."
"Go," Zuko said curtly.
"But-" Mitsukai started.
"Not you," Zuko said, then directed his gaze on the guard. "You." Mitsukai then ducked back into his room. The guard stalked away in a huff, and Zuko whirled on Mitsukai.
"Wow, you hold a lot of authority for a teenager. I'm impressed," she grinned. That smile stopped the tirade he was about to unleash.
"What were you really doing down there?" he asked instead.
"I told you," she insisted. “I was looking for a bathroom."
He sighed and watched as she played with the flame of a candle. A thin thread of flame streamed off the candle and wound itself through her fingers. Zuko watched as it continued to snake around her fingers, getting closer and closer to her hand until it was winding around her hand and down her wrist, then back up again, away from the fabric. She seemed to keep the flame just far enough from her skin so it didn't burn her but looked like it was almost laying on her skin.
"You're a fire bender?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yes, is that a problem?" She let the small flame stream back onto the candle. He saw the faint blisters that wound a design around her hand and wrist.
"How can you do that to yourself?" He grabbed hold of her hand without thinking.
"Ow, ow, OW!" she cried out, snatching her hand away. She pulled a small canteen of water out of her bag. "Because, I can do this." The water flowed around her hand and wrist and glowed for a moment as it healed the burns.
"Wait! How can you be a water bender and a fire bender? Only the avatar can master more than one element." He sat on the bed trying to figure out if what he saw had been an illusion.
"Well... my mother was a fire bender, and my father was a water bender. I was an outcast, a weirdo, an anomaly. Why do you think I live in a neutral village where people don't care what your bending abilities are, or if you even have any? People come to this village for one reason and one reason only." She stopped, realizing she was ranting at him. "Sorry."
He eyed her warily. "You know," she continued, switching gears. "The night is over, so I'm off the clock. I could service you free of charge; technically it wouldn't be prostitution." She stepped toward him again, laying a hand on his, the hand that was holding his sheet in place.
"I've no interest in technicalities," he said firmly, stepping away and letting her hand fall.
"Suit yourself," she shrugged. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me."
His resolve did not stop him from stealing a glance as she waltzed out of the room swaying her hips and humming. The metallic clank of the door as it shut reverberated in his chest. The room felt empty, making him wish he'd taken her up on her offer. He could still catch her... But he decided against it, cursing his infernal pride.
When all members of the crew had returned, albeit reluctantly, Zuko gave the order to cast off and continue their search for the Avatar. He was ready to return to his former stresses when the ship lurched and no other movement followed.
When he reached the engine room, he demanded "What's going on? Why aren't we moving?" His question was answered for him when he saw the engine. It was a mass of metal that had melted down to a useless state. It would all have to be completely replaced.
His uncle entered the room and observed the damage. "Oh, my... It looks as though we won't be going anywhere for a while." A few members of the crew stifled cheers.
"Who could have done this?" one soldier wondered aloud.
Zuko caught the guard from earlier giving him a hard look. "I think I have an idea..."

Mitsukai returned to the restaurant and changed into her uniform. As she scanned the lunch crowd, she was surprised to see the threesome that she'd told to leave the island the day before.
"What are you still doing here?" she asked as she served them tea. "I told you to leave. The Fire Nation is still here."
"We would have left," Katara explained. "Except these two kept getting distracted."
"If you get caught because you're still here, not only is it your own fault, but I stuck my neck out for you for nothing," she said bitterly. She stood and spotted a high, black ponytail through the window. "It's Zuko; get down!" She rushed to the entrance as they ducked under the table.
"Zuko, I knew you'd change your mi-" she began, as if she really thought he was there about that, but he cut her off.
"What did you do to my ship?!" he demanded angrily. "And don't lie this time."
"What's the matter? Having engine trouble?"
Her tone made him grab her shoulder and bring his face very close to hers. "Don't fuck with me. This is no joke. You are the only person who could have done that to the engine, and Hirameki caught you near there this morning. I know you did it; tell me why."
"I wanted to spend more time with you," she said with a fake pout.
"Well, you'll get your wish. I hope you're able to get comfortable in the ship's hold because that's where you'll be staying," he said. He grabbed her roughly by the arm and attempted to drag her from the restaurant. She staggered a few steps before planting her feet and wrenching her arm out of his grip.
"Um, no. I'm working, you can come back after hours and we can discuss this civilly," she said as if speaking to a stubborn child. Then she noticed a line of soldiers waiting just across the way.
Zuko spoke very quietly in her ear. "They don't know about your bending abilities, but if you resist and they fight you, they'll probably find out. Just do as I say and you may live through this."
"I bet it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that this is making you look tough in front of them, does it?" she whispered right back.
Zuko pulled back and glared at her. She smiled then bowed her head. He pushed her a bit rougher than he meant to but was glad she didn't stop and blow their cover. He almost lost it when he shackled her hands behind her back and she grinned and said "I knew you were into bondage." Instead, he simply shoved her, hoping she would take the hint and shut up. She seemed to; she was quiet the rest of the way.

"Great," Katara said guiltily. "That's just perfect. We hid and let the Fire Nation take her away."
"I don't think so," Aang said. "I heard what Zuko was saying to her. Something weird is going on with her and Zuko."
"You guys wanna go save her, don't you?" Sokka asked, really not wanting to risk his life again. "Do you think she wants us to save her?"
"Why wouldn't she?" Katara asked, reasonably. "It's only right."
"Don't you think she planned for this? She knew what she was risking. Do you think she wants us to get caught so it was all in vain?" Sokka said heatedly.
"Calm down, Sokka. I'm saying it doesn't feel right to run away and let this happen to her," Katara told him.
"I agree with Katara," Aang said. "But don't worry Sokka. We won't get caught. We've been on that ship a dozen times and we've always gotten off."
"Why don't we wait and see what happens. If she's not back by night, I'll agree to go save her," Sokka said, compromising.
"Agreed," Aang and Katara said quietly.

As they stepped off the gang plank and onto the deck, Mitsukai stumbled and would have fallen on her face if Zuko hadn't caught her.
"Are you alright?" he asked in a whisper as he righted her.
"I tripped," she said shortly. "I'm fine."
Zuko watched as she swayed on her feet as she stood. He put one hand on her shoulder to steady her and the other on her hands behind her. He tried to keep her from falling over as he guided her to the hold. He hoped it simply looked like he was guiding her. He could feel that she was not quite steady on her feet, and he had a strong suspicion as to why.
When they reached the hold, he didn't want to push her to hard because she would probably fall flat on her face. He nudged her a tad, trying to make it look much harder than it actually was. She stumbled quite realistically, landing hard on her knees.
"I'll question her myself," he told them. They didn't question his motives after seeing him pushing her around. The door was locked behind him.
"Tell me what's wrong," he demanded.
"It's nothing," she said, leaning against the wall as she sat on the floor. "I'm just a bit fatigued. Do you know tiring it is to do that to an engine that fast? I'm wiped out. Hey, where's my bag?"
"It must still be at the restaurant. You didn't have it when we arrested you," he reminded her.
“Oh, shit. I need my bag. I mean, there’s something in it that I need,” she explained, her voice becoming urgent.
“Why? What is it?” he asked before he would go running out to get some purse.
“A crystal on a ring,” she said. “It’s very important. If I don’t have it near me very soon, it will get very bad.”
“Why the hell is it so important?” he demanded still further information.
“Remember how you said only the Avatar can master more than one element? That’s kinda true. If I don’t get that crystal, the elements in my body will start destroying each other fighting for control. I’ll probably die and be in a lot of pain in the process,” she explained. “Is that enough, or do I need to get specific?!”
“I’ll go get it myself. You should be safe until I get back,” he told her. He shut the door firmly behind him and ordered the guard not to let anyone in except him. “I’ll be back soon.”
He left the ship and raced over to the restaurant. He asked the waitress he recognized as Ami if she knew where Mitsukai’s bag was. “She’s indisposed right now,” he said discreetly.
She didn’t catch the intended meaning but came up with a completely plausible one. “Oh,” she said in a knowing tone. “Indisposed, right. I think she left it in the back; I’ll go get it for you.”
Zuko sighed, turning to face the entrance as he waited. He could swear he saw a flash of yellow, orange, and blue disappear around the corner. “I don’t have time for this crap.”
Ami returned with the bag. Zuko thanked her and sped out the door before she could blink.

Mitsukai listened to the door clank shut and tried to breathe normally. “You’ve really dug yourself into it this time,” she told herself. “You really need to stop getting involved in other people’s affairs. It only causes trouble.” She lay down on the floor and attempted meditative breathing since breathing normally wasn’t working.
She heard the door creak and clang as it opened, and she tried to sit up. “That was fast…” She barely managed to remain upright even with the support of the wall and her arms. But the person who stepped through the door was not Zuko. “What do you want?” she sneered.
“Information… For now, whore,” Hirameki sneered right back. “How did you do that to the engine? It wasn’t even hot when we found it. And the floor was wetter than usual. What did you do?”
“’Twas not me. Ask the guard on duty. Oh, wait. That was you.” She had enough energy to be sarcastic, but suddenly, a sharp, searing hot pain shot through her gut, and she curled over, clutching at the stomach, groaning.
“Aw, what’s the matter?” he asked in a mocking tone. “Does lying have that affect you?”
“If it did, I wouldn’t able to do my job very well, now would I? Telling people like you how much I want them, how much they turn me on,” she had recovered from that moment of pain. “It’s that time of the month, fuck off.”
“Yes, return to your post, Hirameki. I said no one was to come in here except myself,” Prince Zuko said, interrupting anything Hirameki was about to say.
Hirameki could only frown and salute, “Yes, sir.” As he left, Zuko could swear he heard him mumble something about “next time.”
After the door ground shut, Zuko turned very slowly to face her, for some reason, keeping her bag just too far away to relieve her pain. “Was that true what you said?” he asked, his voice very low.
“Was what true? No, it’s not my time of the month. Can I have my bag, please?” she had to make an effort to keep her voice from sounding desperate, but the pain was getting intense.
“No. What you said about lying, telling men how much you want them. Was that true?” his voice was calm, but it sounded a little dead.
It took Mitsukai a moment to remember that she had told him exactly that the previous night. “It’s true there are some men that I say it to them and it’s a lie. But when I said it last night, it was nowhere near a lie. Please, give me my bag,” she could no longer keep the pleading out of her voice, but it didn’t matter. A moment later, her face contorted in pain, and she hunched over, hugging herself and just trying to keep from screaming. “Please…” she whimpered.
He took two steps toward her, just enough to relieve a bit of the pain. He could hear her gasping for air as her lungs stopped seizing. “I don’t take kindly to being lied to.” He stepped back and heard her cry out as the pain returned.
“Why are you doing this? Torturing me isn’t going to make me like you more. I could die!” She couldn’t even move closer to him to help herself. “Fuck!”
“Tell me the truth… about everything.”
“I did! How can I make you understand that?” She couldn’t see straight and the edges of her vision were beginning to blur.
The question, for some reason, surprised him. After an agonizing moment for Mitsukai, he came up with an answer. “Kiss me.”
“Wha-?” Had she heard him correctly? Kiss him? That was it? “A kiss?”
“Yes.” He stepped toward her, leaving the bag where it was. He knelt beside her and lifted her upper body with one arm, the other, circling over to hold her head. He brought his face close to her, just looking at her for a moment before pressing his lips to hers. Despite her state, they were soft, but cool. He felt her press into the kiss, then, her lips relaxed and parted slightly. The feeling of her breath on his mouth urged him forward, and he opened his mouth and licked at her bottom lip. He felt her shiver, but the moment their breath intermingled, her lungs seized and her body stiffened. He pulled back and, for a moment, listened, fascinated, to her struggled to draw even one breath. It sounded almost as if someone was strangling her. When her eyes opened a bit and her mouth moved as if she were trying to form words, Zuko came back to his senses and realized he was the one putting her through this. He laid her back down and slid across the cell to grab the bag and practically throw it at her. The moment it crossed some invisible barrier, the vice-grip on her lungs was released and she gulped at the air.
Zuko watched as she recovered but could reason why her color was not returning. She was pale as moonlight, and the bright red color of her hair seemed to have paled as well. “A-are you okay?” What a stupid question, he reprimanded himself. Of course, she’s not okay. You almost killed her. “I-I’m sorry.”
“I’ll live this time.” Zuko could not believe what he was seeing. Was she actually smiling at him? “I guess you’re not a killer after all. You should be proud of yourself. I have just one question. What was kissing me supposed to prove?”
“I’m not sure, but for some reason. I do believe you.” Zuko crossed the room, and the second me was within reach, she punched him square in the jaw.
“Great, you believe me now! I only had to almost die. Be glad all I did was punch you,” she yelled. “You are such a child.” Before she went any further, she made sure to put her ring on in case he got any bright ideas about taking the bag again. Without enough time to recover, she’d just revert back to a writhing pile of suffocating agony.
“Hey, you can’t blame me for being angry,” Zuko attempted a counter.
“Angry, no, homicidal was an overreaction! You know, the reason I trashed your engine was because-“
“I know, the Avatar is here and you were trying to save them.” Zuko surprised her.
“How did you-?”
“I saw them when I was at the tavern, getting your bag.”
“And you came back to save me instead of chasing after them?” Now she was shocked. She almost completely forgave him for nearly killing her. “you make it really hard not to fall in love with you, you know?”
“What?!” Had she just said the L-word?
“Well, you make me want to kick you in the head and kiss you at the same time. Isn’t that kinda like love?”
“I-um… I don’t-“
“That’s funny,” Mitsukai laughed. “You said the exact same thing last night when I asked to how you wanted me. I guess that’s just how you respond to a situation you’ve never encountered.” She stood to address him when she had strength enough to not need to lean on the wall. Or so she thought. She rose to her full height and almost immediately fell to her knees. Or she would have, had Zuko not caught her.
“Oh gods, you’re as cold as ice,” Zuko said as he felt her thought her uniform. He remembered (with some relish) how hot her mouth had been the previous night, but now her lips were cool and her body was freezing. Holding her, he could feel the slight tremors passing through her body with the cold. He picked her up, not caring what anyone on the ship thought and not listening to her protests, and carried her to his room. He put her in his bed, placed the cover over her and added energy to the flames, then went to have a hot bath drawn.
