Chapter II
The moment they walked into the village Zuko knew this was a mistake. He could tell trouble would come by the whispering about them and sudden activity about the village.
“This is a bad idea.” Zuko turned to see he was talking to air and that his Uncle was across the road speaking with a wealthy looking man. He cursed and headed in that direction when a young man about his age, wearing a long ponytail, and expensive clothing approached him.
“My name is Tage I am the healer here, quickly come with me.”The man began walking away toward a dwelling not far from where they stood.
Zuko looked over at his Uncle bowing to the wealthy man. Katara moaned in his arms getting Zuko’s attention. He looked down at the cuts marring her face and the blood in her hair and then decided to follow the healer.
For several hours, Zuko sat waiting for his Uncle in the Healer’s dwelling. During that time, several women came to and from the room where Katara lay saying nothing to him about her condition. His anger was reaching its boiling point. Where was his Uncle and what did he tell that man? Zuko knew he should be ready for anything where his Uncle was concerned.
An elderly woman walked by carrying some clothing and Zuko stood and blocked her path. She smiled up at his hard face. He looked to her as if he were trying to hold back his emotions. She lightly touched his warm arm.
“She is doing well and will recover quickly. Do not worry.” She made him sit down and continued towards the room. A growl of anger filtered through his clenched jaw as the healer finally walked into the room. Zuko stood as he approached.
“She has sustained a head injury that concerns me.”
“Why is it life threatening?”
“No she could experience some memory loss. She fell from a great distance.”
“We found her on the rocks.” The healer raised an eyebrow.
“Did the pirates push her?”
Pirates, that old fool. “Ahhhh”
“He was too busy fighting to see Katara lose her balance and fall.” Iroh stood inside the doorway wearing a sad face that did not match his new and expensive looking clothing. He also looked as if he had bathed. Zuko’s eyes became almost slits as he stared at his Uncle with anger.
“Those pirates have been terrorizing this village for months now.” The wealthy old man said walking into the room with Iroh.
“I am Hur, Tage is my son.”
Zuko nodded to him. “I am Lee.”
"It is a shame that they took all of your belongings." Zuko studied the old man with the white beard. He had a kind face and Zuko could see why his Uncle chose him.
“Yes” Was all Zuko would say as he turned back to the healer.
“You will ride in the carriage with your wife.”
The Fire Prince went stiff for a moment and then smiled with much effort. “I would like that.”
Iroh smiled and followed Hur from the room.

Sokka rubbed his cheek in Toph’s soft hair as she trembled from the pain in her broken hands.
“Sokka” Her sob made him close his eyes.
“Please untie my hands”
The tall woman sitting in the back with them smiled. “So you can hold your girlfriend.”
Anger leaped into Sokka’s body and he fought it as he opened his eyes to stare at his oppressor. “Please I will not try anything. I just want to help her.”
The blade in her hand pressed into his throat. “You better not or we will crush her feet next.”
She cut the rope on his feet and then his hands. She stood and walked toward the material covering the locked door to the front of the carriage. Sokka watched her unlock it and walk through. A black sack fell onto the floor before him and the door shut.
Sokka held Toph with one arm and grabbed the bag. It held medical supplies. “Toph I am going to wrap your hands with splints on your fingers. ”
Her tears began again. Sokka pulled her into his arms. He would kill them all.
“Where is Katara?”
“She fell into the sea. I do not know if she is alive.” He felt new tears fall on his chest and he closed his eyes trembling.
Aang’s unconscious body lying across from them shook violently for a second. Sokka looked over at him. He had seen this before right after Aang killed the Fire Lord. He searched for the body but could never find it.
Sokka turned away from Aang and refocused on Toph. She was still crying in his arms.
“I will take care of you Toph.” He felt hernod her head against his chest.Sokka helped her lay down and then removed the supplies from the bag.
~~~~~~~~~~ Carriage ride to Hur’s home~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The old woman Zuko had stopped earlier rode in the back with him and Katara. She stared at him as he stroked Katara’s hair with as much love and care as he could muster.
“She is a Waterbender. I noticed her healing as I washed her body. All of her cuts will be gone tomorrow. The trauma to her head will take some time but it to will heal. ”
“That is good to know. ”
She leaned forward. “You are too warm to be a Water bender. ”
Zuko looked at her.
“It is a good thing you are what you are because Tage should not be alone with her. He is an excellent healer but he has a problem with touching things that do not belong to him. He is a powerful Earth bender like his father but not as kind. You should stay close to her. ”
“What do you think I am?”
“I will tell no one. Hur will keep you with him until she is well. ”
Katara sighed on the make shift bed constructed in the carriage. She slowly turned her face towards Zuko. The cuts and bruises had healed. He stared at her for a while until he noticed the old woman watching him.
“What do you want from me?”
“I want nothing but your company. ”
Zuko frowned and turned to stare out the window at the passing countryside. He did not care if Tage wanted Katara she was Aang’s friend and Aang was his enemy. Zuko turned back to look at her face as she rested. Her skin looked soft.
“She is very beautiful. ” The old woman interjected.
Zuko turned back to the window. ”You made a wise decision to marry her”
He thought the wise decision was to leave her on the rocks. Soft chuckling from the old woman made him face her again. ”Yes you made a wise decision.”
