The last thing she remembered before taking off, was the advice from her father and not to venture too far from the main path. The one that ran past her family home as well as the homes of several other families. But of course, having hiked that one so many times, the slender girl had grown bored with it. She stopped and looked back down the road she had just taken. She could see the wall that marked her family's courtyard. At this distance, she made out several of the family's hired hands tilling the small field. Her grandmother kneeling by some flowers. She quickly turned her gaze to where the road curved left, through the open expanse of trees, pass the neighbor's back yard and right down into her village. It would take her less than an hour to reach it. Straight ahead of her. The path continued and disappeared within a densly forested section of the trail. She looked back down at her home. If she didn't figure out soon what she wanted to do, eventually they would look up and see her. And then she would have no choice but to return to home.
Her heart beat rapidly in the silence. She looked up at the sky. The sun was overhead. It was still the afternoon. She had plenty of time! She wouldn't go far! Just follow the new trail as far as she could and then turn around again and return home. It looked like a straight run anyway. And besides, she was sixteen now. Time for her to start exercising a little independence. Mulan quickly took off and slipped between the trees marking the unused pathway.
An elderly woman, kneeling in the dirt and weeding her flowers suddenly looked up as if an unseen influence had reminded her of something. She thought she had seen her granddaughter on that road. Now, she wasn't there. Gray brows furrowed in concern. She's probably on the trail. Eventually she'll end up in the village, maybe stop and chat with them. The old woman chuckled softly to herself. Maybe she'll chat with that nice Lee! Nothing to worry about. Should have asked her to pick up some vegetables on her way back! Well, I'll probably run into her myself when I go. Strong gray eyes looked up at the sky. I've got plenty of time until dinner! The elderly woman reassured herself.
The trail had been pretty easy once she slipped through it. It was unused, overgrown with tree roots and the grass was pretty thick but she could find her way easily back. After stumblin a few times she managed to find her footing and resume her pace. Eventually, she found herself facing a fork in the road. One, curved off to the left. She frowned. That would take her back home. Is every trail designed to take me home? She thought with irritation. The right, continued upwards beneath the canopy of thick shrubbery and an archway of thick oaks. Their long limbs intertwining each other, forming an opening, overgrown with weeds and thorny bushes. But she could make out the faint outline of a trail.
But she hesitated. A knot of fear touched her. Oh, for crying out loud. I am not a child. And I am not ready to go home. Besides, knowing her mother, she'll have a list of boring chores for her to do when she got home. Most of them involving the kitchen. She hated that duty. She was always looking out the kitchen window and it reminded her that there was a larger world out there and that she was tired of looking at it from a distance.
Her mind made up! She pushed aside several layers of a bush. She winced as she cut her hand on one. But ignoring the stining sensation, she set out on the trail.
Several hours later, she wished she had listened to her own instincts. The path was difficult. The climb, arduous. It was a steep slope which never seemed to level. Several times she had to stop and catch her breath. It was clogged with thick bushes which tripped her at every opportunity. Weeds and small trees had grown from the cracks in the rock wall which served as the wall. She had to duck her head to get past a few of them, and the soreness of her middle reminded her to look down every now and then after she had failed to see a branch that had been hidden by the dense undergrowth. She looked down on the left side of the pathway. The sides were steep and packed with growth. A fall from here wouldn't be fatal, but an injury would slow her down possibly trap her. No one would know where she was if something happened.
She stopped and sat on a small boulder underneath several branches. The little sunlight that showed through the breaks in the forest canapy reminded her that the sun was setting. It would soon be dark. Sweat poured down her forehead. Her lightweight, sturdy, clothing, something her mother remarked was not fitting of a young woman to wear if she was ever to attract a husband, was damp with perspiration and clung to her.
She looked up the rest of the way. The trail seemed to level out. Well, maybe if I make it to the top. I'll turn around and go back. I'm almost there anyway.
Something stirred in the trees. She froze. The branches closest to her head were shaking as if something was moving about on it. Then, the movement stopped. It seemed awfully quiet. And she had this disquieting sense that someone was looking right at her through the dense foliage. Slowly and very carefully, she slid off the rock mound and moved very quickly up the trail. A dark figure slipped easily out of the tree and landed soundlessly to the ground. Greedy, cruel eyes narrowed at his quarry. She was moving exactly where he wanted her to. His companion was waiting at the other end. He knew what to do.
She spared a glance behind her. The foliage was shifting again, but no one was there. She quickened her pace. She stopped for a moment and leaned against the rock wall. She took deep breaths. Her breathing stilled sharply as she sensed something or someone moving on the rocks above her. She whirled around, tense. She saw nothing but the curves and protruding stones of the wall above her. “Well, what have we here?” A male voice sneered behind her. She snapped her head around. A broad face grinned maliciously at her.
She did not like the look he gave her. It made her feel filthy inside. She took a step back. She wished she had listened to her earlier instincts and returned home. She stopped as she bumped into a protruding belly from behind. “Where you going sweets?” The voice leered in her ear. She grimaced at the smell of unclean bodies. A plump hand, stained with red earth and dirt, gripped her shoulder. “She’s very tiny. At first glance, she looks like a boy.” The fat one said. “You’re right. Hardly . . . ” The tall one began. “I am not a boy!” She shouted. She stamped down hard on his foot, then slammed her fist into his groin. He howled and dropped painfully to his knees. Startled by her actions, she hesitated. Run! Stupid! A voice inside her head prompted. She snapped free and took off back down the pathway.
His companion’s startled look quickly turned to rage. He unsheathed his knife and moved forward. She hadn’t moved fast enough. She let out a scream as he grabbed her by her long, thick hair and yanked her back. He wrapped a sinewy arm around her and placed the knife at her throat. “Nice try Bitch! But you move too slow!” He looked over her shoulder to his friend, clutching his groin and moaning. “Tsang! You alright?” “Yeah. Fine.” He growled through short gasps of breath. His eyes squeezed shut in pain.
He stood angrily to his feet. He moved forward. He pressed his plump face close to hers. “You’re going to pay for that, wench! Nobody does that to me and gets away with it!” The two men laughed nastily as they laid her on the ground. The tall one pinned her arms over her head, while the heavy one knelt over her. Greasy, thick calloused hands started moving up her trousers. With his other hand, the second one began groping at her chest.
“She’s too small. Can’t find anything.” He laughed wickedly. She began to flail her body in an attempt to break free. Tsang gripped her thighs. “I don’t think so love. You won’t get another chance.” She grimaced and turned her head as she felt his thick hands rub between her legs. “Hey, she hasn’t been touched!” “Great! We’re the first. Always wanted to fuck a rich one!” He spread open her thighs with his. His hands began undoing the ties that held her trousers closed. He moved close to her. Anger surged through her. She would accept the consequences rather than face the corruption of her body. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and slammed her forehead hard against his.
The force of her blow caused him to fall backwards. He shouted in pain. “Why you miserable bitch!!” The one holding her raged. “You’re more of a handful than you look.” The tall man said, unimpressed as he raised his knife over her. “And they say we are savages.” A rich voice suddenly spoke. She snapped opened her dark eyes. “Who’s there?” The tall one called out. “Show yourself?” “Is that how you men get your women? No wonder you’re still single.” The bass voice replied smoothly in a mocking tone. The tall one rose quickly to his feet. The moonlight reflecting a glint of light off his knife. “I said, who’s there?!” He could hear his friend still screaming behind him. “Tsang, will you stop fussing! I can’t hear anything!” But Tsang was no longer listening. His forehead was throbbing with pain. He moved toward her. “I’m going to carve your god damn tits....Arrgh!” A loud cry of pain rang throughout the forest. The tall man whirled around. His keen eyes searching the dusk for his companion. “Tsang!” No answer. “Tsang! Tsang! Answer me!.”
He was rewarded with an abrupt cry of pain and a crunching sound. He flinched as a shadow flew at him. She had moved out of harms way and made her way to the rock wall. Slowly, She hauled herself to her feet. Something heavy landed squarely on top of him, knocking him to the ground. He gave a loud start as the moonlight revealed his companion looking up at him with shock on his face and the thick folds of skin, jutting from one side indicating a broken neck.
Terrified and unable to see his attacker, he shoved Tsang off and scrambled to his feet. The clatter marking his fallen knife. He ran quickly up to the plateau. Fear and panic in his eyes. He reached the top of the plateau and stopped short as a large shadow suddenly blocked him. Horrified fascination pinned her to the spot, as she watched a wiry body suddenly raise from the ground. His legs flailing uselessly. There was a gurgling sound followed by a familiar and sickening crunch. The body dropped to the ground as if it were being dumped.
Panic broke the inertia and she took off down the pathway. Not caring if she could see or not. Something moved in front of her. A great shadow that permeated the entire width of the trail filled her vision and continued upwards. Bright orbs of Amber suddenly flared in the darkness and she let out a piercing scream. Blackness took her and she collapsed into a pair of massively muscled arms.
