Chapter 2
Disclaimer: The only thing I own in this story is José Lopez.
I would like to thank everyone that has read this story so far. Still, I would like some reviews. I like constructive criticism.
The next day after school, Bubbles didn't even wait for her sisters and their boyfriends. As soon as the bell rang for her last class, she practically ran out of the school and headed towards the park. It didn't take her long to get there (she was running at full speed after all) but she was a little disappointed when she saw José wasn't there. Then she realized that yesterday she had walked from school to the park so she was most likely very early. Bubbles set her book sack down on the ground beside her and sat down by the very same tree she and José had sat at yesterday. She pulled out something from her book sack and began to look at it. It was the drawing she had done in her room yesterday. It was of José playing his guitar. She smiled at the picture and was so engrossed in it, she didn't notice José walk up to the tree. José sensed someone sitting down at the tree, as he heard their breathing, and knew it was Bubbles.
“Hello, Bubbles,” José said with a smile. He unstrapped his guitar from his back and set it down on the ground. Then he sat down and put his walking cane next to his guitar.
“Hello, José,” Bubbles said with a smile. “How are you?”
“Just fine. Just fine. How about you?”
“I'm much better than I was yesterday,” Bubbles said with a smile. She mentally added, “Since I met you.”
José flashed a smile across his face and said, “My family asked about you the other day.”
“Huh? How would you're family know me?”
“They don't know you. My sister, annoying little brat that she is, was pestering me about why I was late getting home yesterday. Mama and papa hadn't been too worried about it but my sister just kept on and on about it. Finally, she said the only reason I could have been late was because I had met a girl. She was only joking, of course, trying to rile me up, but when she was met with silence, she and my mama and papa realized I must have met a girl yesterday. So they all jumped on me and started interrogating me until I gave them some details. I didn't reveal too much, just what I thought you looked like and what your personality was. I didn't tell them your name, though, because it most likely would have either given my mama and papa a heart attack or they just wouldn't have believed me anyway.”
Bubbles giggled at José's story. It really was quite funny because it sounded like something her own family would do. She was surprised her sisters hadn't interrogated her the other day when they saw she was her normal and cheery self.
“So they think I'm your girlfriend?” Bubbles asked.
“Yes. They do,” José replied.
Bubbles, despite the story she had just been told, hadn't really expected José to answer yes. She blushed a little and laughed nervously.
“Bubbles, I don't make a habit of proving my mama and papa wrong,” José said with a smirk after a few minutes of silence.
“What are you talking about, José?” Bubbles asked curiously.
“Bubbles, I'm asking you to be my girlfriend.”
Whatever reactions of embarrassment or being shy Bubbles had before, were nothing compared to the one she had at that moment. She turned bright red, almost to the point of glowing, and she started breathing so rapidly and in short spells that it sounded like she was having an asthma attack. José turned his head in Bubbles's direction and was worried he might have caused the girl to pass out when he didn't hear anything anymore.
“Bubbles? Bubbles, are you alright,” he called out gently.
“I'm...I'm fine... José ,” Bubbles said. Her breathing was calmed down but she was still bright red from blushing.
“Good. I was worried you might have passed out on me.”
“I almost did.”
“Well?”
“Well what?”
“Would you be my girlfriend?”
Bubbles didn't have the same reaction as she did before but her heart rate did skyrocket through the roof. She didn't really know how to answer him. He seemed like a really nice guy. She definitely wouldn't mind taking him home to meet the Professor and her sisters. The fact that he could play the guitar and sing was a bonus because she loved music.
“ José ...I...”
“It's okay, Bubbles. I shouldn't have asked you so soon. I mean, we just met yesterday.”
“NO! I mean, no. I was going to say that...that...yes...I'll...be your girlfriend.”
“You will?” José asked with a glimmer of hope in his voice.
“Yes,” Bubbles said with a huge grin on her face.
José smiled and picked up his guitar. He strummed the strings to make sure they were in tune and then got into a comfortable playing position.
“This calls for a song of celebration. Would you like to hear it, Bubbles?”
“Of course I would.”
“Great! I hope you like it. It's kind of a mixture between blues and jazz. Obviously I don't have a whole band with me but I think I can do a pretty good job of playing it with just my guitar.”
“Great. Let's hear it.”
José strummed the strings one last time and started to play. After a few moments of playing, he began to sing.
It's too late to cry I love you. The wind still blowing, my heart still aching
One side of my eyes see tomorrow,
And the other one see yesterday
I hope I could sleep in the cradle of your love, again
Cry for me, somebody, with dry eyes
The real folk blues
I just want to feel a real sorrow
It's not bad a life in the muddy river
If life is once
Hopeless hope, and the chance with traps
What is right, or wrong
It's like a both side of a coin
How long I must live till I release?
The real folk blues
I just want to feel a real pleasure
All that glitters is not gold
The real folk blues
I just want to feel a real sorrow
It's not bad a life in the muddy river
If life is once The Real Folk Blues by Yoko Kanno
By the time he had finished the song, Bubbles was in tears. She was sobbing but she made barely audible sounds that indicated she was crying.
“Bubbles? Are you alright?” José asked with concern.
“That was...so beautiful, José. I had no idea you could sing like that,” Bubbles said as she dried the tears from her eyes.
“I'm glad you liked it,” José said as he put his guitar down. “I wrote that song a long time ago. I just never had an opportunity to sing it.”
“Well, I'm glad I got to be the first one to hear it.”
“Me too, Bubbles. Me too.”
“José? Would you like to go get something to eat with me?”
“Sure. I wouldn't mind. Have any place in mind?”
“Well, how do you feel about sushi?”
“Absolutely love it, though I can't say the same for my family.”
“Great! I know this wonderful sushi bar in the Soho district. Let's go,” Bubbles said practically dragging José up by the arm.
“Whoa! Whoa! Calm down, Bubbles. I have to get my guitar and cane first,” José said as he bent down to pick them up.
“Oh, I'm sorry.”
“It's alright. Hey, you wouldn't mind dropping by my house first, would you? I don't feel comfortable having my guitar out in public...well, other than here of course. Plus, it'll give you a chance to meet my family.”
“Sure. I wouldn't mind. Let's go then,” Bubbles said taking José's hand in hers before she had realized she had even done it. Both teens looked up at each other (well, Bubbles looked and José just moved his head in the direction he thought Bubbles was at) and blushed. They didn't take their hands away, though, and José began to walk in the direction of his house.
Bubbles and José talked the whole way there so they could start learning more about each other. Bubbles learned that José had a pet cat named Kuro, which was the Japanese word for black. When she asked him why he gave his cat a Japanese name, he blamed it on his obsession with animé. Bubbles giggled at his response and told him she liked animé too. Her favorite one was called “Ah! My Goddess.” When she asked him how he could watch animé, he said he just pretended it was a radio show.
Before long, Bubbles and José arrived at the apartment building where he and his family stayed. He buzzed the door and the apartment building's owner let him in. He said hello to José and Bubbles, who he figured was a girl José was bringing to meet his family, and went back to his business. José and Bubbles climbed to the third floor and walked down a hall until they stopped in front of a door marked “313.”
“You ready, Bubbles?”
“As ready as I'm ever gonna be.”
José knocked on the door and his mother opened it. She noticed her son first and promptly welcomed him home, but then she noticed Bubbles. She looked the girl up and down and could see that Bubbles was extremely nervous from the way that she kept staring at the floor.
“So, my son. This is the girl you were telling us about,” José's mother asked in Spanish.
“Yes, mama. This is Bubbles,” José said turning in Bubbles's direction. “Say hi, Bubbles.”
“Hola, Señora Lopez,” Bubbles said in Spanish.
“You speak Spanish, Bubbles?” José's mother asked.
“Yes, Mrs. Lopez. I speak it very fluently,” Bubbles replied. The way she spoke it, you would think she was a native of a Spanish speaking country.
“It's so nice to see someone who can speak our language in this city,” Mrs. Lopez said with a smile. “Maria! Set another place at the dinner table.”
“Oh no, Mrs. Lopez. I couldn't possibly...” Bubbles began before she was cut off by Mrs. Lopez.
“Nonsense, my dear. You are a guest in our house and as such, I insist you stay for dinner.”
“Isn't it a little early for dinner,” Bubbles asked. She hadn't meant it to be rude and Mrs. Lopez could tell she hadn't.
“Bubbles, with our family, eating dinner can take three or four hours. I always cook so much and we usually end up spending more time talking at the table than we do eating,” Mrs. Lopez replied with a smile. “By the way, before I forget to ask, you wouldn't happen to be the Powerpuff Girl Bubbles, would you?”
Bubbles blushed and only nodded her head.
“This is so exciting! Could I have your autograph,” Mrs. Lopez asked excitedly.
“Mama! I think that Bubbles would like to come inside now,” José said with a smile.
“Oh! Of course. Forgive me my dear. Come on in,” Mrs. Lopez said as she moved out of the way.
José and Bubbles made their way inside and Bubbles looked around at the fair sized apartment. It was modestly decorated and it had a Latin feel to it. That didn't surprise her at all, seeing as how José and his family were Latino.
“You're home is very beautiful, Mrs. Lopez. Did you decorate it?” Bubbles asked.
“Yes, I did. My husband likes to say that he helped decorate it to, but all he really did is move the furniture around.”
Bubbles giggled at that and José couldn't help but give a little chuckle himself. Mrs. Lopez smiled and led the two of them into the kitchen/dining room. Seated at the table was Juan Lopez, José's father, and Maria Lopez, José's sister.
“Carmina, who is that young lady standing next to our son,” Mr. Lopez asked.
“Well, Juan, this is the girl our boy was telling us about. This is Bubbles of the Powerpuff Girls,” Mrs. Lopez said.
“No way! I don't believe that,” Maria yelled.
“It's true,” José replied with a smile.
“Prove it,” Maria said. Bubbles looked towards José and put a hand on his shoulder to signify she was looking at him for reassurance that it was okay. José nodded his head yes. Bubbles then floated into the air until she was almost touching the ceiling.
“It really is Bubbles! Ooh! Ooh! Can I have your autograph?” Maria asked, nearly jumping out of her chair.
“Maria Lopez! You will act like a proper lady in front of our guest,” Mr. Lopez said in a stern voice. Maria immediately sat down and began sulking.
“It's perfectly alright, Mr. Lopez. Maria reminds me a lot of my own sisters,” Bubbles said with a grin.
“Anyway, please, sit down Bubbles. My lovely wife here has prepared an excellent meal tonight,” Mr. Lopez said.
“Here. Why don't you sit down beside José,” Mrs. Lopez said as she pulled out chairs for her son and his girlfriend.
“Thank...thank you,” Bubbles said as she and José sat down.
For almost three hours, just as Mrs. Lopez said it would take, the Lopez family and Bubbles sat at the table talking and eating. Bubbles learned a lot about José's family and, likewise, José's family learned a lot about Bubbles and her sisters. Maria and Mrs. Lopez kept pestering Bubbles for an autograph and the innocent Powerpuff finally gave them one once José said they'd never leave her alone until she did. Once dinner was finally over, every one heard a cell phone going off. Bubbles apologized and reached into a pocket on the pair of jeans she had been wearing. She pulled out a blue cellphone that had her picture on the back of it.
“Bubbles. What do you want, Blossom?” Bubbles asked her sister as she had seen her sister's cell phone number on the caller ID.
“Bubbles! Where are you? We've been looking all over the city for you,” the leader of the Powerpuff Girls yelled into the phone.
“Why didn't you just call me to start with?” Bubbles asked.
Blossom only grumbled a response into the phone. Bubbles smiled at her sister's inability to come up with an answer.
“Well, where are you then?”
“I'm at my boyfriend's house having dinner with his family,” Bubbles replied matter-of-factly.
“WHAT?!”
“I'm at my boyfriend's house having dinner with his family. I'll be home in a few minutes. Tell dad and Buttercup not to worry,” Bubbles said as she hung up before Blossom could say anything else. “Sorry I can't stay longer but I'm afraid I have to go. My family's starting to worry about me.”
“It's perfectly alright, my dear. It was a pleasure meeting you,” Mr. Lopez said as he offered his hand. Bubbles took it and absentmindedly squeezed just a little too hard, eliciting a cry of pain from Mr. Lopez.
“Oh my God! Mr. Lopez, I'm so sorry,” Bubbles said as she let go of his hand.
“It's alright, Bubbles. A strong handshake is a sign of good character,” Mr. Lopez said. Bubbles hadn't broken anything but his hand would be sore for a while.
“Well, I'd better get going then. Bye everyone,” Bubbles said as she started to leave. Before she could head out of the door, she felt a hand grab her shoulder. She turned around and saw José standing there.
“Yes? What is it, José?”
José responded by leaning forward and putting his lips on Bubbles's own. Bubbles's eyes widened in shock at first but then she closed them and started kissing back. After a few minutes, José broke the kiss and smiled at Bubbles.
“Bye, my Powerpuff,” José said as he headed back towards the kitchen to finish dinner with his family.
As Bubbles left the apartment building and took to the air to get home, there was only one thing she could say to describe what had just happened.
“Wow.”
