Disclaimer: I do not own Danny Phantom, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
SpriteWolffie: Hello readers! Chapter 2 is FINALLY here! Sorry I slacked off and made you all wait so long.
Krysti: Yes. It is all her fault. *conveniently neglects to mention that she's been slacking off the artwork*
SpriteWolffie: ^^;;; I'll try and get the next chapter out sooner, but don't hold your breath. Anyway, we don't own Danny Phantom and we're not gaining any profit from it, so don't sue us. The only thing I have to offer is... Hey, where the hell did my shiny penny go!?
Krysti: *hides hands behind her back* A bird stole it. *whistles* And I got the Green Day CD, so I have no money.
SpriteWolffie: *still looking for shiny penny* Oh... uh, well, on with the fic! *looks under rug* I know it's here somewhere!
Krysti: *snickers*
Chapter 2
Sam had been sitting on her bed reading a book when she got the call. Since he had snapped at her and Tucker during school that day about never getting a moment's peace and just wanting to be left alone, Danny was the last person she expected to call her. Sam set down her book and picked up the phone; but as soon as she said 'hello,' the response she got was loud and slightly panicked.
"Hello? Hello, Sam?! Is that you?"
"Danny?" she asked, dumbfounded. "Um, why are you yelling?"
"Oh, thank God I finally got a hold of you!" he said, ignoring her question. "Who would've guessed that remembering something as simple as a phone number would be so difficult? Man, I hate telephones! I swear that they're all plotting against me."
"Okaaay..." she said slowly.”Is there any particular reason why you're calling?"
"Sam, I don't know what to do," he explained frantically. "He won't wake up!"
"Who won't wake up?" Sam asked in confusion.
"Danny. I think there's something wrong with him. He just won't wake up!" he said in a distressed tone.
"First your temper, and now you're talking in third person? Danny, what is going on?" Sam demanded.
Danny sighed in exasperation and, after a short pause, said, "Just come over to his... er, my house and I'll explain everything that I can. Oh, and can you call Tucker and tell him to come over too? I swear I'll break this phone if I have to deal with it again."
Sam rolled her eyes at his last comment, but still said, "Sure, I'll be over soon." Hanging up the phone, Sam heaved a sigh before picking it back up and dialing Tucker's number while muttering, "Never a dull moment."
^~*~^
Shortly after hanging up the phone, Danny Phantom took a seat on the bed next to his human half. He gazed down worriedly at the raven-haired boy that lay unconscious before him.
Stressfully running a gloved hand through his snow-white hair, Phantom grumbled, "Man, I'm such an idiot. I never meant to hurt you." Resting his hand on Danny's own pale limp hand, he said quietly, "I just hope you're okay."
The reason why Phantom had flown Danny to his house was because they had been closer to it, since it was where they were heading to begin with. Besides, at the time, Phantom hadn't been sure Sam or Tucker would even be home. However, he hadn't expected the phone to be so difficult to work.
'What do they even need all those extra buttons for anyway?' he thought to himself.
After sending the phone a quick, patented Death Glare, Phantom turned his attention back to his human half. He was still a little bit too pale, but at least his breathing had evened out to a steady, healthy pace.
'Despite his pale complexion,' he thought as he absentmindedly ran his fingers through Danny's raven-black hair, 'he looks so... peaceful.'
As he slowly reached down and brushed the back of his hand against his human half's face, the door opened and in walked Sam and Tucker. Startled, Phantom turned invisible as he jerked away from Danny, lost his balance and fell off the bed. Since he turned invisible so quickly, Sam and Tucker hadn't seen him, but they did hear him.
"What was that?" Sam asked cautiously.
Before Tucker has a chance to answer, they heard Danny speak. However, the voice wasn't coming from their friend currently lying on the bed, but rather from behind them.
"Don't you two knock?" the voice snapped as the door slammed closed as if by its own will.
Sam and Tucker took a step back from the haunted door before Tucker explained, "We knocked on the front door, but when nobody answered after a few minutes, we thought something might be wrong, so we came up here."
"Who are we talking to? Where are you?" Sam asked suspiciously since she could clearly see Danny asleep on his bed and had heard the voice on the other side of the room from him.
Instead of answering, Phantom just sighed and appeared before them. Sam and Tucker's eyes widened as they looked from Danny on the bed to his ghost form in front of them.
"Okay," Sam said as she held a hand to her forehead, feeling a headache coming on, "What happened?"
"I don't know," Phantom sighed hopelessly. "We were fighting Skulker," he explained before adding under his breath, "and losing." Shaking his head, he continued on, "He had used this thing called the Plasmius Maximus which neutralizes me... err, our powers, and just as he was about to skewer us like a shish kebob, there's this really bright light and, well, here I am."
Sam walked over to Danny's prone form and stared down at him with a worried look on her face. Ever since Danny got his powers and fought his first ghost, Sam had had to come to terms with the fact that he would be in a lot of life-threatening situations. Although she had supported his choice to be the town's protector, she still hadn't really gotten over the thought of all the danger Danny would face and that one of these days he'd end up being a full ghost instead of a half ghost. If Danny's ghost half hadn't have broken free when he did, that could've been today.
Not looking away from Danny, Sam asked, "Have you tried the Fenton Ghost Catcher?"
"No," Phantom mumbled, looking down at his white boots. "I don't want to... make it worse."
"That won't make it worse," Tucker confidently reassured him. "We know how to use it now. One quick swipe, and you'll be back in one piece."
"Greeeaat," Phantom said in an unenthusiastic voice, but Sam and Tucker didn't seem to hear his sarcasm. When he looked up from his boots to see Tucker heading for the door, most likely to get the Ghost Catcher, he said quickly, "No, wait!"
Stopping in his tracks and turning around to face his friend's ghost half, Tucker raised an eyebrow and asked, "What?"
"Um... um," Phantom said with a somewhat desperate air to his voice and he tried to think up a good excuse. Covering his slip-up before Sam and Tucker grew too suspicious, Danny explained in what he hoped was a convincing tone, "We should wait a while longer to see if he wakes up. I mean, he could be perfectly fine when he wakes up. And besides, we weren't separated by the Fenton Ghost Catcher, so by forcing the two of us back together, we could be making it worse!"
The truth was, Phantom didn't want to be reconnected with his human half. He had already gotten used to having his own body again and he didn't want to give it up. Sam and Tucker still thought he and Danny were the same person, and even if he did explain it to them, he doubted they would understand. He doubted anybody would understand what he went through. Being trapped in a dark corner unable to move or feel physical contact; only able to watch the world through someone else's eyes. It was a whole new meaning to the phrase 'look but don't touch'! He couldn't go back to all that after experiencing what having his own body was like. It might drive him to insanity!
Sam turned away from Danny and narrowed her eyes at the ghost suspiciously. Phantom smiled nervously, wishing he could hide from her stern gaze. She finally shook her head and decided to compromise with the ghost, "We'll wait an hour, and if he hasn't woken up by then, back through the Ghost Catcher you’ll go—both of you."
"An hour?!" Phantom complained, but when Sam gave him an 'end-of-discussion-glare', Phantom sighed in defeat and sat back down on Danny's bed.
Seeing that this was going to take a while, Tucker sat down in the chair in front of the computer, pulled out his PDA and started playing a game. Sam took a seat on the other side of the bed from Phantom, and an awkward silence settled in the room, only broken by the beeps of Tucker's PDA.
'I hope you wake up before the hour's over,' Phantom thought as he once again looked at Danny and had to restrain himself from brushing his dark bangs out of his eyes, knowing it would lead to questions he didn't even know the answers to.
Sam watched Phantom staring down at Danny rather intently with a hint of something in his eyes that she couldn't quite place. After all, the eyes were the windows to one's soul, and Sam could see an emotion of some sort reflecting in Phantom's eyes. Granted, it wasn't the 'I'm going to kill you' emotion that she'd seen in the eyes of the ghosts Danny has fought in the past, which was why she wasn't worried, but she had seen the look before, she just couldn't place it.
However, before she could delve deeper into the meaning of the look, her gaze was directed back to Danny as she heard him let out a miserable groan. Danny Fenton shifted uncomfortably on the bed as he slowly and tiredly forced his eyes open, looking as if he'd just woken up from a hundred-year-sleep. He blinked a few times and as his vision finally came into focus, he was shocked to see his ghost half sitting next to him with a worried but relieved look on his face. Not really knowing what to say, the first thing to come out of Danny's mouth was:
"Oh crap, what happened?"
