(PLANTED INTIMACY: The Next Morning)
Danny turned in his bed and shivered. Had someone turned down the temperature in the house? He could only continue to wonder as he was slowly pulled away from soon-forgotten dreams and drifting lazily toward consciousness. Eyes still closed, the fourteen year-old frowned as he felt something tickling him. It felt...wet. Almost like a dog was licking his side under his shirt...Danny groaned into the pillow, muttering for the dog to go away and let him get some sleep for once. This thought wander for a bit until it finally connected:
They didn't even have a dog.
What jolted him awake was the feeling of something thick and slimy trying to slide down past the waistband of his jeans.
Danny bolted upright, heart thudding. His eyes shot down and he jumped at what looked like several thick vines sprawled and twitching all over his bed, draped across covers now ruined with the slime. He yelped and tumbled off the bed, landing with a heavy thud on the floor. There was a ghostly shape of some kind of mass of tentacles right next to his bed, waving in the air.
“What the – ” Danny was panicked enough to start calling for his parents, when the memories of the other day suddenly came flooding back. His mouth snapped shut as he cautiously got to his feet – why was he still wearing his cloths from yesterday? – and peered over the bed.
The glowing plant seemed to keen for a moment from its position on the desk, withdrawing its tentacles for a moment before wrapping them around him again, as if it were the equivalent of dog kisses. Danny backed up until his back hit the wall, face scrunching up as the ghost plant peppered him with brief touches.
Of course, it got slime everywhere.
Danny didn't speak at first, but merely grimaced as the slime spread over his skin again, making him inwardly groan. He'd have to take an extra long bath to get it all off, especially after what happened last night...
"... um. Uh... good morning to you, too..."
He tried to think quickly. This thing couldn’t stay here. He was still trying to figure out what to do, batting away a tentacle trying to go up his shirt, and happened to glance at his alarm clock.
“Oh jeez, I’m late for school!” Danny hurried out of his clothing, feeling gross like he desperately needed a shower, and began bolting into fresh clothing, still fighting off the ghost plant that seemed to want to try to cop a feel. “Could you stop that?!”
Jazz met him at the door, jumping almost sheepishly as he jerked open the door, holding his pants up with a harried expression. "Where are you going?" One of her eyebrows rose up; as she was fully dressed, looking to be in her usual groomed state. "Are you meeting one of your friends today?"
"It's school today, duh," Danny muttered matter-of-factly, buttoning his pants and reaching for his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder. He ignored the plant for the time being, but tried to shove past Jazz, to no avail.
"Danny, it's Saturday."
“W-what?” Danny blinked.
“It’s Saturday,” Jazz repeated. She tried to peer past him. “Do you still have that… thing inside there?”
Turning, Danny looked at the ghost plant, now sighing as it continued waving at him.
"It seems like it needs a lot of care. I gave it some water last night, the thing was dehydrated..." She paused, blinking at Danny's stunned look. "Um! I mean... I'm just gonna leave you be, breakfast’s downstairs!" Smiling sheepishly, she backed out of the door with both of her hands up, waving before she booked it down the hallway.
"What was that about?" Danny muttered, watching his sister disappear from view with a baffled expression on his face.
He carefully closed the door. Now that he was finally allowed some time to relax, the boy still felt sore in strange places. Usually whenever he had a ghost fight, he could expect a few cuts and bruises on his face and arms. Danny shook it off, focusing. He had to clean himself up before he went downstairs – his parents might be oblivious, but even they couldn’t ignore the way he looked right now. The last thing he needed was to give them an excuse to barge uninvited into his room and discover that a rather incriminating ghost plant had taken residence on his desk.
The plant, now keeping to itself, looked like it was sulking, obviously ignoring Danny for ignoring it.
Danny sighed, crossing his arms as his eyes scanned over the plant. "Look, I'm sorry, okay? What else am I supposed to do?" He smacked his forehead. He really was going crazy, if he was reduced to talking to plants.
It was a ghost, but STILL...
“Behave yourself,” Danny said sternly as he left to go take a shower. He made sure to lock the door behind him, glad for once that his dad – for some unexplained reason – had ghost-proofed all the bathrooms in the house. It hadn’t made much sense at the time, but…it was coming in handy now. Danny had a feeling he didn’t want his shower interrupted by the ghost plant wanting more of its “bonding”.

Vlad Masters threw the last box on the ground with an annoyed snarl, not happy at all. He didn’t like it when things just started vanishing without warning, especially when they were his property. There was nothing in the labs and the ghost experiments that were intelligent enough to speak couldn’t tell him what had happened to the lost prototype. His gaze shifted to a glass wall reinforced with glowing anti-ghost bars behind which a huge plant stood encased behind it, much larger than the one he had lost.
"If I can't find that plant... I'll send another to search for it." Phasing through the glass and shutting down the anti-ghost bars with a casual wave of his hand, he appeared before the plant, pointing at it with a stern finger. "You. Go find the first, and bring it back here."
A cold smile quirked on his lips. "Whole…or in pieces, I’m not too particular about the details." The plant chirred almost happily, seeming to split itself and dissipate through the wall, heading straight for the rebuilt Ghost Portal in the next room over, and to the Ghost Zone.
"Excellent."

Danny was relieved to find that his parents had already retreated to the lab downstairs by the time he finally came trooping into the kitchen, still walking a bit stiffly and toweling his dark hair dry. Jazz was sitting at the table, buried behind a thick book as she absently ate her toast. Danny joined her quietly as his sister shot a long glance over the top of the pages, studying him carefully. Thinking about last night, Danny felt his cheeks flushing; what had happened was wrong, he was too young, with a ghost of all things – his mind kept going in confused circles, unsure of how to approach the subject. He desperately hoped that his sister hadn’t walked in on it – he had a feeling that she would be positively horrified and disgusted.
Jazz didn't say anything, finishing her toast and obviously waiting for Danny to say something with that overprotective stare of hers.
Danny avoided her gaze as long as he possibly could, pushing his scrambled eggs back and forth on his plate. He wasn't hungry - he was horrified to find that the ghost plant had left an aftertaste in his mouth that still lingered - and after a while, he finally set his fork down. "Jazz, um...about yesterday..."
"Yeah?" Jazz put her book down, showing him she was all ears. "You can talk to me, Danny." She smiled softly.
"I..." Danny faltered. How could he explain that he was pretty sure he had just done " It" with a plant? Suddenly his resolve failed him and the fourteen year-old looked down. "It's not important...never mind."
"Are you sure?" Jazz looked genuinely concerned, getting up and standing near him, putting her hands over his. "You can talk to me... about anything. That's what big sisters are for."
Danny shrugged, feeling as if his whole face must be beet-red from how much he was blushing. "Did you know Mom and Dad never sat me down for the birds and bees talk?" he said evasively.
"Oh, er... no, I didn't know that!" Jazz's face was now beet red as well, and she loosened her grip, merely looking at their hands now. "Uh... er... what did you wanna talk about? The whole..." Trailing off, Jazz had no idea how to continue.
“The whole thing?" Danny supplied helpfully.
"Well, uh..." Jazz started sweating, obviously not cut out for this sort of thing. "When two people get together... who love each other very much..." Bing! She brightened a small bit. "Take Mom and Dad for instance!"
"Oh , gross!" Danny made a disgusted face. "Mom...and Dad...?"
"Yes, and if you wanna learn about the birds and bees, you have to realize that they did it too."
"Did what, dear?" Maddie called, entering the room with Jack trailing behind her, holding a gadget that they had obviously been working on downstairs.
"Uh... nothing!" Cried Danny and Jazz at the same time, looking fidgety. Jazz glanced at Danny, and quickly removed her hand.
Jack held up the device he had been holding. It looked like some kind of leaf-blower, with a long metal tube attached to what looked like a tiny backpack. He waved proudly at the gadget with his screwdriver - Maddie ducked the screwdriver patiently - and brandished it. "Kids, I'd like you guys to help me and your mom with our new anti-ghost weapon," Jack said with a grin that stretched from ear to ear. " This is going to be the Fenton GFlame Thrower!"
Jazz smacked her forehead, letting out an aggravated sigh. "Can't you two take your ghost hunting elsewhere? Danny and I need some alone time, to you know... talk?"
"Talk?" Jack looked bewildered. Maddie, however, caught her daughter's look and elbowed her husband in the side. "Ow!"
"Love you, Mom and Dad; bye!" Jazz grabbed Danny's hand and yanked on it, practically dragging him to her room, and through the door.
"Are you okay?"
Danny pulled his hand out from under Jazz's, suddenly feeling self-conscious. "I-I'm fine."
Jazz sighed again, looking rather put out. "Danny..."
Danny glanced about her room - it was wall to wall with study materials and books. One entire shelf was devoted to her journals alone, divided by years. He had never really been inside his sister's room, at least nothing more than a few minutes. It was...orderly. He avoided Jazz's gaze. "Really it's not important. I was...uh...just being a spazz."
"Are you sure?" Jazz frowned, looking absolutely sure that Danny had wanted to ask her about something else. She still looked worried, now more than ever. "You look like you want to talk, but..." She trailed off, leaving it open for him to take, if he wanted.
Danny shook his head; the best thing to do was tell Tucker and Sam about the ghost plant - maybe omit the "bonding" part - and see what they said. He had a feeling his sister would flip if he went into full detail. Walking up to him, Jazz wrapped her arms around him and hugged tight.
"Okay, Danny. But just know... I'm here for you."
"I..." Danny stood stock still. He wasn't used to being hugged - much less by Jazz of all people. "...Thanks."
"I'm here for you, Danny. I'm your sister." She pulled back, and gave a reassuring smile.
Danny nodded and quickly retreated from the room; when Jazz looked at him like that, he knew that he was always in danger of blurting out anything, like his worst fears. He hurried back to his own room to call Tucker and Sam, deciding that maybe getting out of the house would be a better idea than sticking around.
Entering his own room, Danny sighed as he leaned against the doorway, sliding down to the floor. His head felt like it was spinning in confusion and he was almost sure he was developing a nice headache. He buried his face in his hands, scrunching his eyes shut behind them and trying to think. What had happened yesterday was going to have to come out somehow – if not now – and he really didn’t look forward to it. He was still thinking along this depressed train of thought when he heard a noise. He shivered as a wisp of cold air fluttered from between his lips. Danny jerked up.
Something moved in his room, and Danny turned his head to look at the ghost plant, which he thought made the racket.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the plant at all, but something much bigger, and seemingly much more deadly.
It looked like the plant had called a friend.
