Chapter Two.
The cooks were preparing the morning meals for the Joes, they noticed that the newest cook wanted to cook and do everything. They were thrilled that this one cook, who wanted to do everything. All of the cooks made comments about him being a hard worker. They wondered when he will burn out for how hard he is working it will not be very long. They asked him if they could taste the meal that he made for the team.
“Come on, then. The food is nice and hot,” the new cook said, as he sprinkled what looked like salt onto the dish he held out to the cooks.
The cooks all ate it and it was a matter of minutes, they all fell to the floor convulsing before going still. The cook smiled as he started to drag the cooks away from the kitchen.
Ten minutes later, the cafeteria was filled with all of the Joes eating the food all at once and soon, one by one the Joes started to collapse. Those who started to eat the food and drank the water got sick and collapsed before they could get out of their chairs.
~~~~~~~
Duke and Hawk were discussing a previous battle against Cobra in Hawk’s office when they noticed that no one was really bothering them at all about what Bazooka or Shipwreck was doing. Duke and Hawk decided to go find out what was drawing the team’s attention away from sending reports to them.
“I bet Flint got the whole team on the training field running themselves into the ground. He’s hard on the new recruits but they need to be for us to win the battle against Cobra. They need to be at their best.” Duke said as they headed towards the training field.
Hawk looked at the empty training field but then he noticed that everywhere he looked no one was there. The guards at the entry posts were not visible. “This is very strange. Where is everyone?”
Duke scratched his sandy blond hair as his stomach rumbled with hunger. “I’m not sure. I’m going to the cafeteria to get breakfast.”
Hawk watched as Duke headed for the commissary, his first instinct was to sound the alarm and just scare the team a bit with the threat of an attack but decided to follow Duke to the commissary to get breakfast as he was hungry too. Duke had just opened the door and stopped dead in his tracks. Hawk wondered why did he stop right there at the entrance to the commissary when he looked over Duke’s shoulder to see all of the Joes lying either on the floor or collapsed onto the tables. None of them were moving.
“Okay, this is really funny, Duke. Tell them to get up,” Hawk said.
“Sir, this is no joke of mine. Besides, I do not joke like this. It has to be one of Shipwreck’s bad joke on us. Okay, guys, jokes’ over. Get up.” Duke said. But they never moved. Duke went to one of the Joes and shook him only to have him topple over, his eyes wide open.
Both men went racing to each Joe and felt for a pulse only to find none. The entire base filled with Joes was killed by an unknown assassin. Duke turned to Hawk and shook his head.
Hawk was kneeling in front of one Joe and felt for a pulse. He stood up and glanced over at Duke. “Duke, I’m sorry but Shana and your brother Vincent . . . they’re gone,”
Duke looked at Hawk and then noticed the two people he cared about sitting there not even moving. “Shana? Vincent . . . no they can not be dead?”
“I’m sorry, Conrad, but they are.” Hawk said.
“No, they can’t be dead,” Duke said, as he went to Shana and shook her, begging her to sit up and look at him. He turned to Vincent and begged him to take a punch at him.
Hawk shook his head as he went to a phone and dialed a number. “Yes, my name is General Clayton Abernathy and I need to speak with the Secretary of Defense, please. This is urgent. Code Blue, he’ll understand what it means,”
Hawk turned to look at Duke as he cried holding Shana in his arms begging her to wake up. He turned back to the phone when he heard a voice on the other end. “Sir, this is General Clayton Abernathy, I am in need of getting the military police here from another base and I will be in need of having the military coroner here. I hate to say this but I have over 70 men and women dead in our cafeteria. Unknown causes.”
The voice on the other end said something as Hawk nodded and hung up the phone. He turned to Duke. Hawk realized that even though Falcon made Duke’s blood broil, his anger towards his half brother, he loved him as he watched Duke beg Falcon to wake up and take a punch at him. The room was deathly quiet even with Duke’s pleas.
Something was not right the seven chefs who worked there were not visible. Why were they not out there begging the Joes to wake up? He headed to the kitchen and headed into the kitchen and found a very empty kitchen with seven plates on the ground. Upon closer examination he found what looked like drag marks on the ground. He followed the marks to the freezer where he found the seven cooks all in the same state as the Joes in the cafeteria.
Hawk rushed out of the freezer and informed Duke what happened to the chefs. “I think they were all assassinated and we’re the last Joes alive,”
Just then, the door to the cafeteria opened to reveal one Joe not dead – Lifeline.
“Hawk sir, what’s going on here?” asked Lifeline, as he entered the room slowly.
“We had an assassin go through the cafeteria and kill all the Joes. How without firing a shot is a mystery to us,” Hawk stated. “I’m even shocked about how this could have happened so fast and without us even knowing about it till now.”
Lifeline looked at them shocked as he turned to look at the dead Joes scattered through the room.
