Chapter 2: Suffering
******A bit of an added disclaimer for this chapter, if you get sicky-poohs when reading about torture stuff, you might want to skip this chapter.
Zim groaned softly as he regained consciousness, squinting as a harsh light overhead hurt his eyes. He shivered, frowning when he realized that he had been stripped of his uniform. There were human voices all around him...What had happened? The last thing he remembered was inspecting the control brain for his base after having difficulty with the computer’s voice response program…
Trying to sit up, his chest tightened when he realized he was strapped down. An attempt to move his feet proved just as fruitless, and he scowled, snarling.
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!”
There was laughter on all sides, and the overhead light was tilted away slightly so that he could see the room around him. And there stood Dib, grinning arrogantly. Zim hissed, wrenching at the bonds and glaring daggers at him. “YOU. I should have known…”
Dib smirked. “You should have known better than to think that I wouldn’t find a way to catch you, Zim. It was only a matter of time.”
Zim clenched his teeth. “Release me, human, or you will suffer my horrible wrath!” He tried to extend his spider-legs, only to find that a titanium shield had been placed overtop of his pak to prevent him from using them.
Again, there was laughter, and Zim looked around, counting no less than four other scientists gathered around the metal autopsy table.
“He does that a lot. You’ll learn that he’s quite arrogant and has a very sparse grip on reality. However, I think that after we’ve done a few experiments on him, he’ll finally start cluing in.”
“Well then, Mr. Membrane, what do you have on the schedule for today?” One of the scientists asked, a broad grin on his mustached face.
Zim tensed, then glared at Dib.
“Well, I figured I’d show you a few things about him first.” Dib walked over to the far side of the room, taking a beaker out of one of the cupboards and turning one of the taps on, filling the beaker with water.
Zim’s eyes widened at the sound, then narrowed hatefully. That horrible human…oh, the Dib would pay for this once he got loose…Zim’s stomach clenched as Dib approached with the hated liquid, and he hissed through his teeth. “You vile little dirt-child! Release me!”
Dib rolled his eyes. “You see what I mean, of course. I’d gag him if it weren’t contrary to my scientific practices.”
Zim snorted. He knew that the Dib just wanted to hear him scream.
“Now, one of the first things I learned about Irkens when Zim came to Earth is the effect that water has on them. Observe…” Dib poured a generous amount of water onto Zim’s bare chest, and the smell of smoldering flesh filled the room, as did the sound of Zim’s agonized screaming.
Tears stung at Zim’s eyes, and he snarled at Dib. “YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS, YOU STINKING HUMAN!!”
Laughter, and another blinding wave of agony as water was splashed down the length of his torso.
“Now, another thing I discovered about Irkens is their rapid rate of healing. I guarantee that by tomorrow, all traces of the burns will be gone.”
The scientists nodded and murmured among themselves, and one, a red-headed female, tapped her chin in thought. “Does that apply to sight as well?”
Dib leered. “You know, in all the years I’ve known him, I’ve never been able to test that particular theory. Let’s find out.”
Zim gasped and wrenched at the metal clamps holding him down to the table. “NO! How DARE you do such things to me!” As Dib held the beaker over his face, Zim clenched his eyes tightly closed, gritting his teeth in horrified apprehension.
Dib tsked in disapproval. “Doctor Petrie, if you could hold one of his eyes open? I don’t think he’s going to co-operate.”
Zim struggled as one of his eyes was forced open, uttering an ear-splitting shriek when water was dumped over his vulnerable eye, his back arching as much as the restraints would allow. Stabbing pain shot through his entire skull as everything in his view from that side went dark, the surface of his eye bubbling and turning black.
“Fascinating.” The female scientist breathed after Zim’s shrieks of pain died down to quivering whimpers of agony.
“Yes.” Dib nodded, unseen by Zim, who still had his good eye clenched closed. “Now, another thing I wish to show you is his reaction to certain foods. Do any of you have some form of meat product in your lunches?”
A gray-haired scientist nodded. “I have roast beef. I’ll go and get it.”
Dib grinned maniacally. “Excellent. That will be perfect.”
Zim was trembling on the cold metal table, his breathing shallow and strained. How had the miserable human caught him? He couldn’t remember, especially now that he was in such excruciating pain. He was at the human’s mercy due to his own lack of foresight. Not only was he a failure as an Invader, he was now a threat to his race as the humans stood to gain vital information from the experiments they intended to perform on him. Once they learned his weaknesses, they could exploit them…he groaned softly. If only he could reach his self-destruct switch…
Zim went rigid at the sound of something being unwrapped, and he howled when a cold slice of meat was dropped on his forehead. He wrenched and struggled as it burned his flesh, making the stabbing pain in his head even worse.
“Now, notice how the reaction to the meat is different. Rather than simply burning him, the meat also fuses to the flesh. But once again, I guarantee that the burn will heal. However, I have noticed from a previous encounter that this particular form of burn takes longer to heal, so perhaps two days rather than one. My theory is that it takes longer because of the fusing process.”
Zim clenched his teeth as tears escaped his good eye, and he tried valiantly not to break under the torture. He refused to give the Dib-worm that kind of satisfaction.
“Very interesting. Does he have the same reaction to other types of foods?” One of the scientists asked.
“As far as I’ve seen, yes. I’ve concluded that it must be some sort of allergic reaction.” Dib spoke detachedly.
“That would seem logical, yes.” The other female scientist, a heavy-set blonde, agreed.
“And what of skeletal structure?” The mustached scientist inquired.
Dib nodded. “The bones in his arms are similar to that of a human’s, except for the Irken hand only having two fingers and a thumb, of course. He also has a spine, although I’m uncertain as to the number and structure of the vertebrae.”
There was a murmuring among the group of scientists, and Zim shuddered. They spoke of him like an inanimate object, as if he weren’t even there listening to them…such coldness and detachment…it disgusted him …
“That’s not a problem, we can perform MRI scans and X-rays to determine that.” The gray-haired scientist waved towards the immobilized alien.
It was the redhead who spoke next. “And what is his mechanism of hearing, since he has no ears?”
Dib shrugged. “Well, my theory is that he detects sound vibrations through his antennae.”
Zim clenched his teeth. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Stinking, cruel, ignorant humans…
Dib turned to Zim and quirked a brow. “How do you hear, Zim? Would you mind telling us?”
The scientists chuckled and watched as Zim opened his good eye and gave Dib a hateful glare, not answering his question.
“Ah well, I suppose we’ll have to find out through other means.” Dib shrugged.
“Indeed. Let’s start with the MRI, shall we?”
*
Throughout the rest of the day Zim was subjected to horrible and sadistic torture in the name of the Dib-beast’s detestable ‘science’, and when the scientists finally left for the evening, Zim lay trembling on the cold metal table in the dark, bruised and bleeding. One of his knees had been hyperextended and his left arm was broken, his damaged eye only just beginning to heal. As he lay there in the cold and the darkness, a hopeless sense of misery began to overcome him. He had severely underestimated Dib, and now he would pay for it. His mission was a failure…he was a failure. All he had ever wanted was to succeed, to prove himself, and now he was going to be tortured to death at the hands of his enemies, an embarrassment and a danger to his own kind.
An aching sense of despair overcame him and he began to sob. If only someone would kill him…

To Yaoifanboy: *melts* oh, you're so nice and flattering to me, you make me blush! Thank you for reviewing. I'm a little worried that this story might not get viewed as much due to the fact that it IS het, but I can hope. And Tak's role will get interesting, I'm sure...*winks*
