Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron
"Icy Nights, Winter Screams"
Chapter Two: Strange
Seven Weeks Later:
She didn't know what to call herself anymore. The she-kat who was used to be called by a serial number of 128993 stared at her own reflection. Tracing the angry pink scar that went down her neck and puckered close to the center of her throat. The last attack robbed her of her old voice and left this scar. Each beating/attack she received because of who she was and who she was trying to protect robbed something from her. The small box in front of her held all her personal belongings. What little there was. She tried not to look out of place, but she felt it. She felt like she had her freedom, but not her life back.
A kind old she-kat who sat next to her tapped her arm. She looked over.
"This is you stop dear," the old she-kat said.
"Thank you," she replied.
She got up and started her way to the back of the bus to the side door.
"Storm sounds good," the she kat thought. "It is my real name any ways. Doubt anyone would think I’m Turmoil with this face."
She exited the bus then glanced at the posh beauty shop that was in the same area as the bus stop. She took in a deep breath and walked in. What greeted her was unreal. There was kats getting piercing and tattoos, and then the regular hair cutting and such too. A she kat with bright pink hair smiled at her.
"Can I help you?" The she kat with pink hair asked.
Storm nervously touched the scar on her neck, "Do you take walk ins?"
"Sure we do sweetie," she coolly replied. "What would you want today?"
"I'll put it up to you," Storm replied.
The she kat then smiled wide, "Alright sweetie. I'm Tiger Lily."
"Storm Clawson," Storm replied.
Tiger Lily tapped a pen to her bottom lip, "You can set your box down underneath that one chair. Take off your coat too. I want to get a good look at you."
Storm did what she was told. She felt haggard based to the stylists there. She wore a old gray shirt with jeans that had more holes then anything else. Her sneakers weren't even white anymore. They had been given to her at the shelter she stayed at the night before, so even the size was wrong. Tiger Lily came over to her and pulled at the shirt's sleeves.
"Been out on your own?" She asked.
"No," Storm said. Her voice hoarse.
"Know who she looks like?" One she kat asked who was getting a tattoo on her neck. "That Turmoil she kat I saw on the TV two days ago."
Storm tensed up and Tiger Lily noticed, "Don't worry. We won't say anything."
She glanced back at her and Tiger Lily winked.
"You don't have much to work with," Tiger Lily said. "But by the end of today you'll have plenty. That scar on your neck…It messed up your voice didn’t it?"
"Alittle," Storm said, her voice was gravely sounding. "My doctor didn't want me to stress my cords too much."
"I know where you're coming from," She said. "Call me Lily, Tiger Lily takes up too much time."
"Okay Lily," Storm said. "Where you want me?"
"Shampoo chair over there," Lily said. "Take out that tangle you have on the top of your head."
Storm gave a nervous chuckle and took out the tangled bun she twisted her hair into. Lily then blinked, seeing how long her hair was.
"And it's that long tangled?" She asked.
"Yeah," Storm said. "Do what you want with it."
"Ever dyed it?" Lily asked.
"No," Storm said. "They don't allow us to dye our hair in prison. That's a luxury."
She sat down in the chair and Lily pulled all her hair into the sink and piled on the shampoo and started to warm the water.
"If you have more then sixteen inches you can donate hair to 'Shear Hope'. They make wigs for sick kats who lose their hair because of illness," Lily said.
"I'll do that," Storm said.
Since the shampoo was so strong, it started to clean away the gunk that made Storm's hair look dull brown. Soon her hair turned brighter, like light brown sugar.
"What kind of plans you have for my hair?" Storm asked.
"We have to let it dry and I have to cut the braid for the donation. Then we can figure out what we'll do."
Storm sighed and watched the ceiling as Lily rinsed her hair then put conditioner in.
"So have you looked for a apartment or anything yet?" Lily asked.
"I'm looking," she said. "But not alota kats want to have a ex-con share a room with them or rent one to me."
Lily nodded then began rinsing the conditioner out, "There's a Clawson down at the Salvage Yard a few blocks from here. Could there be any relation?"
"Not really," Storm said. "Clawson is a fairly common last name."
Lily hummed slightly as she guided Storm into sitting position and dried her hair some with a towel.
"I'm going to use one of our head dryer seats to dry your hair off if that's fine with you," she said.
"Sure," Storm said.
They ended up cutting a braid that measured around sixteen inches from Storm. Her hair was now to her upper back. Lily started to look around in her dye selections.
"Got a color you've wanting to try?" Lily asked.
Storm watched Lily's pink hair, "Never was much of a hair dye girl."
Lily played with her hair for a moment, "I have a idea what’ll look good. You trust me?"
"Sure," Storm said.
"Awesome," Lily said. "In no time you’ll be good as new."
"Sounds good to me," Storm said.
"And I'll give you some fringe bangs to frame your face. More on your right so it can cover up that scar on you cheek," Lily said.
"No," Storm said. "I don't hide my scars. I got them protecting kats. Not by fighting."
"Just fringe then," Lily said.
