    Chapter 2

    Written and Edited by R.S.

    **************************************

He-man let out a labored groan as he struggled off the dirt to his hands and knees. His back was on fire and throbbing with an intense pain. He heard feminine laughter in the distance behind him and turned around. A beautiful woman dressed in an ultra short crimson skirt, with matching knee high boots was standing at the top of a small hill about fifteen feet away. An ornate, jeweled mask rested on top of her long raven hair and she was brandishing a large energy rifle.

“Mmmrrowww…Did you enjoy your taste of the Horde Shock Cannon, He-man?” she asked with a smirk. “It was forged by the most skilled weapon smiths of Horde World and its powerful enough to destroy even you.”

He-man recognized her immediately. He had first encountered her when traveling to Etheria, a land ruled by the insidious Hordak, on behalf of the Sorceress. It was a fateful trip that had reunited him with his long lost twin sister She-ra. He had only fought with the woman briefly then, but he knew well enough that she was trouble. But what was she doing here?

“So you’re in on this too, Catra?” asked He-man, making it to a crouching position.

“I’m so flattered that you remember me. But I’m afraid that we’ll have to cut this reunion a little short.”

She quickly yanked a lever on the side of the weapon, leveled it at him once again, and fired. Utilizing his heightened reflexes, He-man unsheathed his sword and brought it up just in time, expertly deflecting the blast back at her. The stray energy beam ricocheted off the barrel of the cannon and jerked it out of her grasp, sending it tumbling down the nearby shallow ravine. Catra watched as it bounced like a pinball off several large rocks before hitting the bottom about ten feet below.

“No!” she shouted angrily as she chased after it.

He-man unsteadily rose to his feet, ready to pursue the villainess, when he heard movement behind him. He began to turn but it was already too late. Siryn buried the tip of her rod-like weapon into the small of his back. He could feel the cold steel of the two metallic prongs as they dug deep into his muscle and soft tissue near the base of his spine.

“Gyaahhh!” he yelled out, dropping the sword, as an all too familiar white hot, searing pain enveloped him.

“You didn’t forget about me already, did you?” Siryn asked. “A girl might take offense to that.”

The vibrant scarlet energy lit up He-man’s entire body as well as the immediate area around him. Still not having fully recovered from the previous attacks, he quickly dropped to his knees. The relentless crackling red magic from the rod mixed with his own cries of agony. It was going to be too much to simply power through this time.

Circling around to his front, with a broad smile and a sadistic glint in her stunning blue eyes, Siryn began to taunt him.

“Not so strong now, are we? I don’t understand why Skeletor has such a hard time trying to defeat you, He-man. It seems pretty simple to me. Though you were a worthy opponent and have no doubt fought many battles, in the end, I’ll wager you never thought you would finally see defeat at the hands of two women.”

Keeping the rod carefully trained on the hero and confident in her victory, Siryn let her gaze wander over He-man’s well muscled physique, slowly drinking in the impressive sight. Her eyes played over his strong biceps, well defined abs, and chiseled pecs with unabashed admiration.

“I have to admit it is a shame though…to let such a marvelous specimen such as you go to waste. The very thought of such a handsome and powerful man helpless at my feet intrigues me greatly. Dare I say the possibilities are nigh endless.”

The villainess bent over and cupped his chin in her hand. He-man’s eyes were beginning to glaze over from the overload of pain, but she could tell he had not completely given up. An unmistakable fire burned in his deep blue eyes, silently declaring that he was not yet ready to welcome defeat.

“Your pain is absolutely exquisite, He-man” she commented, breathing a bit heavier than before. “It is as intoxicating as a finely aged wine. I am glad that you are able to allow me such a rare opportunity to savor it.”

Usually a victim would collapse unconscious mere seconds after experiencing an attack from her favorite weapon. None had ever lasted even close to this one. She would greatly relish this victory indeed.

Siryn smiled at He-man’s impressive durability and resolve then leaned closer, fleetingly brushing her top lip against his lower. She paused there a moment, allowing her soft, sultry lips to simply linger a thread’s breadth above his. The memory of their earlier kiss was still fresh in her mind. She could still feel his strong yet gentle embrace encircling her body. Resisting the urge for a repeat performance, she reluctantly pulled back.

“Don’t take this too personally, dear. It’s just business after all. Under different circumstances we might even--”

“Get the hell away from him!” an angry voice suddenly yelled.

Siryn was blindsided as she caught the wrong end of a long, cobra headed staff to the side of her head causing her to relinquish the energy rod. Though surprised, she quickly rolled with the blow, managing to avoid the full brunt of the attack. A young and quite attractive auburn haired woman dressed in skimpy tan and white armor now faced her.

“I don’t know what you were trying to do to He-man just now but I’m putting an end to it!” shouted Teela.

    **************************

He-man could hear the sounds of battle all around him though he was not quite sure what was happening. His senses were still dulled and he wondered if his surroundings would ever stop spinning. Bracing himself against a tree stump, he managed to get his legs underneath him. A strong, gold and green armor clad hand hauled him the rest of the way to his feet.

“Sorry we were a little late. Are you okay, He-man?”

He-man smiled weakly at the older, silver helmeted warrior.

“Man-At-Arms…thank you. But h-how?” asked He-man. “I thought you, Teela, and Cringer were far outside of Eternia.”

“Well we decided to come back a couple of days earlier after this one…” he said pointing down to Cringer “…kept complaining about having to sleep outdoors. He really is just a huge pampered house cat.”

“Hmph. I take offense to that,” said Cringer indignantly. “If it wasn’t for me then we wouldn’t be able to help Ad- I mean He-man right now. And it’s not my fault you can’t get some decent chow out in the woods. That’s not my idea of a vacation. I’ll take the royal chef’s cooking and my warm bed in the palace over that any day.”

Man-At-Arms rolled his eyes then turned his attention back to He-man.

“We saw Beastman and Jitsu running away when we first arrived. And Teela is still fighting with that black and silver clad woman. Is that everyone?”

“No…there’s another woman… that should be in the ravine over there,” he answered pointing to his left.

    Man-At-Arms nodded.

“Understood. Cringer, go over there and see if you can take care of her while I help He-man back to the battle cycle.”

The green and yellow striped cat’s eyes went wide.

“M-me?” he asked incredulously “What am I supposed to do?”

    Man-At-Arms sighed heavily.

“I don’t know…just try and scare her away. You look enough like a ferocious beast- just act the part for once, Cringer. I’ll be along shortly if you need any help.”

    *******************

Cringer took his time as he sulked over to the edge of the ravine, mumbling under his breath. Why was he always saddled with the grunt work, he wondered. He cautiously peeked over the edge and spotted Catra just picking her way to the top with a large grayish object in tow. Cringer leapt out in front of her and put on the most ferocious face he could make, trying to show all of his teeth at once.

“Groowwwlll…grrrrrr…um rooooarrrr!” he shouted loudly, giving his best attempt to sound menacing.

Catra froze in place with a look of utter puzzlement. It’s working, Cringer thought joyously. His victory was short lived though as the villainess wheeled the shock cannon around point blank to his bewildered furry face and pulled the trigger. Instinctively, Cringer hit the dirt and shut his eyes, burying his head underneath his large paws. The rifle emitted a strange buzzing noise and began throwing off bright sparks. The barrel and handle instantly became white hot.

    “Ahh!”

Catra yelped and tossed the weapon aside just as it exploded in a miniature blast. Damn it the fall down the ravine must’ve disrupted the energy core and made it unstable, she realized. She would have to take care of this annoyance on her own.

Catra took the crimson, jade eyed mask resting on her forehead and lowered it over her face. A luminous lavender aura immediately outlined her svelte frame as green smoke wafted around her. Peeking out from between his paws, Cringer witnessed as her body began shifting and reshaping itself. A second later the fetching villainess had instantly morphed into a fierce panther. With her new form taken hold, she let out a feral growl at the still larger, but no less afraid, cowering Cringer.

“Wait. Uhh wouldn’t you like to sit down and talk about this?” asked Cringer slowly backing away. “Maybe over a nice roast chicken dinner?”

Catra took a vicious swipe at his face but he was already gone. She gave chase, quickly gaining on him and intent on mauling him severely.

“Help! Heeellllpp!” wailed Cringer as he ran for his life.

He found Man-At-Arms trudging toward him and met him half way. Catra skidded to a halt as Man-At-Arms unholstered his pistol and fired, just missing her. The feline villainess did an about face and doubled back to where Siryn was still wrestling with her opponent.

    ***************************

Teela ducked a high arcing kick from Siryn and countered with one of her own, planting her boot in the villainess’ mid section. Siryn doubled over, struggling to catch her breath. As Teela rushed in for another onslaught a large, dark formed blur leapt out her, knocking her roughly to the ground.

“We must go, Siryn!” shouted Catra reverting back to human form. “There are too many of them to fight and my Horde Shock Cannon has been destroyed.”

Begrudgingly, Siryn nodded in agreement. “Just a moment, Catra.”

She then turned back to Teela who was still struggling back to her feet. Siryn dashed forward and slammed a hard sucker punch against Teela’s jaw sending her to the dirt once again.

“Alright, now we can go,” she said with some satisfaction.

The duo took off behind one of the larger village huts. Siryn flicked the buckle on her utility belt open and pressed a hidden button. What had been an old, beat up looking horse carriage flickered and flashed as its camouflage screen deactivated, revealing a light flying craft. The women jumped on the two seated hover jet and were airborne in seconds. Catra maneuvered the vehicle back around for a final pass.

“This isn’t even close to being over!” Siryn shouted from above to Man-at-Arms and He-man who had gathered around Teela.

The villainess placed a hand to her lips then blew a taunting kiss to He-man.

“We’ll be seeing you again shortly, handsome. And next time I’ll have you kissing my boots!”

The three warriors and Cringer could only watch as they rocketed out of view over the horizon.

After a hand up from her father, Teela wiped a small trickle of blood from her busted lip with the back of her hand.

“Anytime, anywhere, bitch” she said through clenched teeth.

“Who were those two?” asked Man-at-Arms.

“I’m not sure,” answered He-man. “They’re both from Etheria- that much I’m know. But I’m going to go ask someone that can probably shed some light on this situation.”

    ***************************
    Later

The black hover jet soared over the lush green and gold forests and fields of Eternia as it headed toward the foreboding swamps and eternal darkness of Snake Mountain. The imposing lair, guarded by an enormous serpent, was a sight that would dampen even the bravest of souls.

“How are we going to explain this to Skeletor?” asked Siryn. “He said if we failed…”

“Leave Skeletor to me,” said Catra. “I’m not as worried about what that skull faced imbecile will say as I am about what ‘She’ is going to say. She isn’t going to be happy that we failed to acquire our primary objective. But for now all we have to worry about is defeating He-man.”

“Right,” agreed Siryn. “And this was just a test run. Next time we unleash the full arsenal and hold nothing back. I will>/i> have the Champion of Eternia begging for mercy before this is over.”
