Chapter Two: The Fallen City
Zuko woke as he could feel the sun rising, filling him with its energy. He sat up, wincing slightly as his scar on his stomach still seared. He looked around and soon realized he had fell asleep sometime during the night. He quietly rose up to his feet and began walking to where the others where.
He arrived to where he left everyone and surprisingly everyone was up.
“There you are Zuko!” Katara ran up to him. “We’ve been worried about where you have been.”
Zuko looked around and noticed they packed up all of camp and must have been waiting on him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you wait. I’m surprised to see you guys up so earlier.”
Katara looked down. “I don’t think any of us was able to sleep.”
“Oh.”
“We better get moving if we plan to get to Ba Sing Se today.” Sokka stated as him, Sukki and Toph entered the airship.
Zuko and Katara then followed.
Zuko pondered for most of the trip, about his Uncle Iroh, who he hoped was able to free Ba Sing Se and stop it from burning to the ground once his father reached it. He knew his uncle was strong but he had his doubts, since the Avatar was no matched for him. He was broke from his thoughts when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see who it was.
“Katara?”
Katara sat down next to Zuko.
“Sokka says we are almost to Ba Sing Se.” She took a breath “I was wondering, how is your scar?” She looked down at his scar that was still exposed through his shirt.
“It still burns a little”
“I can give you a healing session if you like once we land.”
Zuko nodded in agreement.
“So uhh…” Katara looked to the floor “This girl that we are going to try to find….once we find her, she will be able to stop the fire lord as soon as possible?”
“Well, the last time I saw her, she was only master of water, and I doubt she has become a master of the other elements without a teacher. Either way, I don’t think we should rush her like we did the Avatar. I don’t think my father can do much more damage, so allowing her more time to prepare herself will be a huge advantage.”
“But we can’t just stand by and let him do as he pleases and enslave people!” Katara felt herself getting angry, and she wasn’t for sure why.
“But we can’t afford to lose another person, who is the last chance to stop him either.”
“Oh, but we could afford to lose the avatar!? Is that how you feel!?”
Toph and the others turned around as they heard Katara yell at Zuko
“Katara, I never said anything like that!” Zuko tried to reason with Katara.
“Yes you did!” Katara began crying and began to bend the water out of the skins that she kept to her sides, and formed it into a whip before Zuko could dodge she had whipped him across his face. Sokka ran to his sister to try to calm he down and keep her from doing further harm who shoved him away. “Leave me alone!” Katara ran out the side door and ran up the stairs that would take her to the upper part of the balloon. Zuko put a hand to his face as he felt something warm tickling down the side.
Sokka walked over to a bag and pulled out a cloth and handed it to Zuko.
“I’m sure she didn’t mean it, she’s just really upset about Aang’s death.”
“I know.” Zuko grabbed the cloth from Sokka’s hand and began to apply pressure to his face where Katara whipped him.
“Guys!” Sukki gasped, and Sokka quickly ran over to see what it is, and Sokka soon realized in horror.
“What guys! What is it!?” Toph questioned as she pushed her self in between Sokka and Sukki.
Zuko walked over to see what all the commotion was about and saw several plumes of smoke rising from Ba Sing Se.
“Ba Sing Se….its….it’s gone.” Sokka fell to his knees.
“Uncle….” Zuko felt a desperate urge to run into Ba Sing Se.
“We should land the airship far from Ba Sing Se, as we don’t want them to think it’s the fire nation coming back for another attack.” Sokka began to maneuver the airship to land it in the scarred landscape.
“Someone should go get Katara.” Sukki stated, and Toph started to walk over to the door but was cut off by Zuko.
“I’ll go get her.”
“Aren’t you afraid that she will lash out at you?” Sukki asked.
“I think I can handle it this time.”
Zuko walked out the side door and began to walk slowly up the stairs. Hearing the metal clinging under his shoes was all to familiar to him.
*Flash back*
Zuko walked down the halls of his ship listening to his own foot steps echoing through out and found himself quietly knocking on a door. Something that he didn’t normally do, since it was his ship and he would do as he pleased. He heard foot steps getting closer to the door. The door open and she peeped her head through the door.
“Oh! Prince Zuko! I wasn’t expecting you!” She opened the door and invited him into her quarters.
Zuko looked around, and saw all sorts of scrolls laying about with many forms of bending. Fire particularly.
“I see you like your new accommodations.”
“I do, thank you as being kind enough to allow me to stay in something more comfortable.” She bowed.
“I see you have collected many fire bending scrolls.” Prince Zuko picked up one and began to look at it. It appeared as if someone was dancing with a dragon.
“Yes, I’ve tried to collect many among my travels so I can teach myself.” She began to walk over to Prince Zuko to see which scroll he was looking at “Oh! The scroll you are looking at now” She carefully reached up to Prince Zuko’s hands and had him bring it down so she could explain better “Is the form called “The Dancing Dragon” It’s an ancient form of fire bending that is thousands of years old. It comes from the Sun Warriors who were originally the first fire benders.”
Prince Zuko laid the scroll back down. He noted to himself to be more careful with the scrolls.
“I’ve come to tell you that when we make dock again in a couple of weeks, that you are free to go.”
“Thank you, Prince Zuko.” The girl bowed and the prince turned around and walked out shutting the door behind him.
*End of Flash back*
He made it to the top of the battle airship and saw Katara sitting and gazing at the desolate landscape. Zuko quietly walked over and sat down next to Katara.
“I know what it is like to lose someone you really care about, Katara.” Zuko put his hand on Katara’s shoulder. Katara turned to face Zuko, who had tears streaming down her face. “I know its hard.”
“Really?! And who do you have that you lost that you cared so much about!?” Katara snapped.
“Well…” Zuko swallowed “I guess” Zuko thought to himself for a moment “I guess I didn’t lose her considering I never had her in the first place, but I let her go and I watched her walk away. I was foolish and I didn’t realize what she actually meant to me, until she was gone.” Zuko could feel the same emotion washing over him, that day when he watched her walked away. The confusion, wanting to go after her, telling her to stay, wanting to turn her in as the Avatar for his honor. Wanting his father’s love, wanting her to love him. He was so confused then, and had no idea what he wanted. Zuko slightly sighed as he was glad that he finally sorted out his life, well most of it anyway.
Katara blinked and just study Zuko. She then saw where she lashed her whip across the side of his face.
“I’m really sorry, for lashing out at you. It was wrong, and I had no reason too.” She looked down but back up at Zuko. “I can heal it for you, if you like.”
“Its fine Katara. I know your really upset about loosing Aang.” Zuko reassured her, and held out his arms for a hug. She happily complied and fell into his arms and began to cry again.
“I miss him so much.” Zuko ran his hand through Katara’s hair, trying to comfort her. He tried to think what his uncle would say, in such a dark time, but couldn’t really come up with anything in his mind.
Zuko then lifted Katara’s chin “It will get better, I promise.” It was the only response he could think of, but he smiled as he saw Katara slightly smile.
“Thank you.” Katara then moved away from Zuko’s embrace.
“We probably need to get down below, Sokka is going to land us outside of Ba Sing Se.”
Katara nodded as they both stood up and made their ways back down below. By the time they reached the control room Sokka had the ship almost completely landed.
“Its good to see that your okay now Katara.” Toph noted as she turned and smiled at the two that was entering the room.
“Yes, I’m fine now.”
Sokka soon landed the ship and the exited the air ship one by one. The all stood and looked at the burning city. Toph put her head down as she could feel the panic in Ba Sing Se.
“We should get going, if we want to make it before night fall.” Sokka started walking, and the others followed but Zuko decided to get their much quicker, and began to run towards the city.
“I’m going to find my uncle!” Zuko yelled back to the others.
“Wait! You can’t just go….” Sokka stop yelling as he realize that Zuko is probably to far to him now “running off and splitting up.”
“Don’t worry, I can always find Sparky among the crowd.” Toph said as she punched Sokka in the side.
“Ow!”
----------------------------------------------------------------
Zuko arrived to the wall, and came to a halt. It was much worse than what he expected to be, but amazingly there was more smoke than fires. He squinted his eyes in attempt to look ahead to see if there was anything and saw some white tents pitched far in the middle. Zuko then began to sprint again, as he knew it had to be his uncle.
He finally reached the middle where he saw many people laying on the grounds in pain, crying and reaching out for help. Many was scared and charred from the fires. He looked around and saw that many of the White Lotus was tending to them. He slowly walked over to the biggest tent and pulled back the curtain to see his uncle along with a few other White Lotus member sitting around a table. Iroh looked up to see his nephew standing before him.
“Zuko!” Iroh quickly stood up and ran over to his nephew, grabbing him in an embrace nearly squeezing him to death.
“I’m so glad to see you alive!”
“Its good to see you too Uncle.” Zuko patted him on the back. They pulled away from each other, and Iroh motioned for Zuko to sit next to him. Zuko sat down with the other members of the White Lotus. Zuko looked around and noticed that he only knew King Bumi, and that the others he met before going to the fire nation capital was absent.
Iroh began to pour a cup of tea, only to soon frown.
“We have guessed that things did not go well with my brother and the Avatar.”
Zuko lowered his head. “No, they didn’t.”
“We all assumed as much, when we saw my brother in the distance approaching Ba Sing Se, with every intention of burning it to the ground. Luckily, not all is gone.”
“What do you mean? It looks to be in ruins.” Zuko pondered as the part he had walked through was devastated.
Iroh sat his tea cup down.
“When me and my men saw the flames approaching the city, we knew that all we fought for was in vein and there wouldn’t be much that we could do to prevent the city from burning to the ground, other than evacuating the people that we could. The fires soon reached the outer rim of the city and began to burn it down, but something miraculous began to happen. I turned and looked to the inner part of the city to see something that was a blue glowing globe that seem to expand engulfing the city, and once it reached me, I realized it was water. Someone was bending all the water in the city to form a bubble around Ba Sing Se. But it was too much for the bender to hold for to long as the bubble collapsed and rained water down on all of us. The fire lord had stop raining fire down, but had jump down from the air ship to battle the powerful water bender. When I reached the inner city, I realized it was Lynn that was the powerful bender. It was an amazing battle, through all his punches, he could not gain an upper hand in the battle. In his rage, he let out a powerful blow that wiped out half of the city and realizing I was a spectator struck me down with lightning catching me off guard and ultimately I died. The remainder of the battle I have been told that in one fell swoop Lynn summoned a powerful wave and swept the fire lord out of the city along with putting out the fires.”
Zuko gasped! He couldn’t believe his uncle had died!
“But, if you died…” Iroh cut Zuko off.
“Lynn brought me back to life, and I owe her great gratitude.”
Zuko thought for a moment. “Wait! If she could bring Uncle back, she can bring back the avatar!”
“Uncle, I have to know where Lynn is! She might be able to bring the Avatar back to life!”
“She is outside with the other members of the White Lotus, healing the wounded.”
Zuko stood up and bowed before his elders and exited the tent quickly and began to walk among the wounded and the dead.
He then saw her sitting at the side of an Earth Kingdom citizen crying out, as she healed him. He walked slowly, and he felt his heart race has he approached her.
