Winston Zeddemore leaned back in his chair and laughed heartily into the receiver. “She did, huh? Sorry to hear it. How long you been on the couch now?” He listened to Jake’s groaned response. “Three days? Damn, man. She’s really pissed!”
Ray and Egon wandered into the rec room from the third floor laboratory. They looked at Winston questioningly when he burst into a fit of laughter. He wiped tears of mirth from his eyes and held up an index finger, indicating that they should wait for a moment. “Well, our namesake is no one to mess with. You should’ve known better.”
Jake’s unmistakable tenor laughter could be heard clearly coming from the receiver. Ray and Egon both smiled in understanding. Joey must have gotten Jake into trouble with Jessica again. The child was an expert at pitting his parents against each other as a diversionary tactic to take the focus off his own wrongdoings. Whenever this happened, Jake always called Winston and asked for advice on how to get back in her good graces. Zeddemore-designed romance strategies were foolproof.
“Well, just do what I said and everything should be all right. Jessica’s a bleeding heart. She’ll never be able to stand it.” He listened for a moment then laughed again. “No! I do not think it would be easier to just get her drunk and jump her bones. She’ll just kick your ass later when she wakes up with a hangover.” Winston listened as Jake said something else. “Yeah, well Pete would suggest something like that. That’s why he spends so much time on the couch himself. Let him worry about the revenge on Joey. It’s more my territory to help you deal with Jess. Do what I told you and she’ll probably apologize to you. Hell, you may even get lucky, man!” Jake thanked him and told him to say hi to Ray and Egon. “Tell them yourself. They’re standing right here.” Winston handed the phone to Egon then went down the firepole.
“Hello Jake.” Egon listened for a little while. “Oh. I think that’s my fault. Joey asked me last week how to turn human hair pink without using hair dye. He said it was for a science project at school. I didn’t know he was planning to use it on Chloe.” Jake burst into a fit of laughter that resounded through the rec room. He said something to which Egon grinned. Ray raised a curious brow. Egon told him, “He says that I should know better by now than to trust his son with such information.”
Ray smiled and shook his head. Egon said good-bye and handed the phone to Ray before retreating down the stairs to get something from the basement lab.
“Hi Jake!” Ray gre. “. “What’s Joey been up to this time?” Ray listened for several minutes and laughed himself to a beet red color. “Well, next time you’ll know not to cross him. Oh and don’t worry; Egon has something that will take the pink out of her hair. We’ll FedEx it to you tonight.” Jake thanked him. “Then again, maybe you don’t want to use it. At least now you can tell them apart so they can’t switch places and pull one over on you and Jess again.” Jake laughed and said that was what he was thinking, but it would only earn him more time on the couch and his back was already killing him. “Oh well,” Ray chuckled. “Just an idea.”
