“Jessica! What a pleasure to see you! You look radiant. Come in. Here, sit down.” He helped the tall beautiful redhead out of her coat and hat. He then hurried around his desk to retrieve a comfortable chair for her.
“Thanks, Harv. How have things been around here without me?”
“Dull as dirt my dear. How are you feeling?” he asked, pulling out his desk chair and wheeling it over to her.
“Like I swallowed a watermelon that’s slowly leaking into my ankles,” she replied as she sank down languidly into the offered chair.
Harvey nodded sympathetically. He casually propped his hip against the front of his desk, looking at her seriously. “And how is Jake doing?”
Her deep, throaty laughter always made her boss smile. “He’s doing about as well as can be expected.”
“Meaning he’s a wreck?”
“Exactly.” They both laughed. “And he’s driving me nuts to boot.”
“Don’t be too hard on him, Jess. I was just as bad when each of my three daughters were born. This is his first time as a father after all, and it’s got to be hard for him knowing that you’re carrying twins.”
“Well it’s my first pregnancy too Harvey, but I do understand what you’re saying. My father-in-law keeps telling me that it’s taking all of his will power not to call us every hour to make sure things are all right. He says that Jake is unbearable enough already and he doesn’t want to encourage him.”
Harvey Sherman, executive producer of WGPN News, was glad to be able to chat with his favorite employee, but he knew that he had to find a suitable way to raise the issue of the problem he was facing. Even more of a dilemma was how to do so in a way that wouldn’t cause her to immediately decline. Jessica was his star field reporter, and her maternity leave was undeniably inconvenient in its timing. He only hoped she’d be willing to help him out.
“Jessica, I have a favor to ask.” He put on his most beatific smile.
She returned the smile in kind before replying. “Whatever it is Harvey, the answer’s no.”
“You don’t even know what I’m gonna ask yet!” he protested innocently.
“That’s right, and it’s better that I don’t know what you want. That way, I can just tell myself that the station wanted me to move a sofa or something, so I was justified in saying ‘no’.” She patted him on the cheek and got up to leave.
Desperation immediately set in as he rushed over to cut her off. “Wait! Please Jessica, just hear me out!”
“No way, Harv. I hear you out and you’ll make me feel so guilty that I’ll say ‘yes’. Then, my beloved husband and father of my unborn twins will never speak to me again for agreeing to . . .” She studied him critically. He looked like he was ready trst rst at the seams. “ . . . well, whatever it is you want me to do!”
“Jessica please, it’s not that big a deal, and you’ll get a free trip to Manhattan, first class all the way. You can even take Jake and Eddie with you, our treat! That way, they can keep an eye on you.”
She gaped at him in horror. “Manhattan? I’m not going to Manhattan! Don’t you remember what happened the last time you asked me to go to New York City?” she demanded accusingly. “I ended up getting held prisoner by a ghost, and during the one week the New York Ghostbusters were out of town that whole year! The guys had to come all that way to get me and I had to endure a lecture from Jake all the way home for not telling them where I was going or that I was tracking down a ghost!”
“Water under the bridge, mar! ar! I’m sure hes mellowed out some.”
“Oh yeah? Jake and I weren’t even dating then! Can you imagine the lecture I’d get now?”
Harvey winced. He’d forgotten about that. New York was definitely a sore spot. He’d have to try a different tactic. He plastered on an even cheesier smile. “It’ll be cake!”
She leveled him with a cold stare. “That’s what you said last time!” She pulled on her hat, and buttoned her coat over her protruding belly.
“Yeah, but this time I mean it. It’s just an interview.”
Jessica stopped with her hand on the office door. She turned to face him with a baffled expression.
“An interview? Harvey, I know this place doesn’t exactly run like clockwork when I’m not around, but an interview? You expect me to believe you don’t have anyone else who can do an interview but me?”
“Of course I do. It’s just that I can’t send anyone else but you.”
She stared at him blankly. What did that mean? ‘It doesn’t matter! Don’t fall into the trap!’ she mentally chided herself.
Harvey turned and walked over to face out the window, hiding his smile in the process. He knew his Jessica. Part of the reason she was such a stellar journalist was her avid curiosity. She would never be able to let such a vague statement go unquestioned. It wouldn’t be long before . . .
“Why not?” ‘Dammit!’ She could’ve kicked herself . . . if only she’d seen her feet in the last two months.
“The nature of the interview for one. I only trust you to do it. No one else is as good as you.”
She rolled her eyes at the blatant attempt at cheap flattery and started to open the door.
“And the people I need interviewed,” he blurted. “I can’t send anyone else to interview them because of who they are.”
“Why Harvey? Who do you want me to interview?”
“The Ghostbusters.”
“What? Jake and Eddie don’t need to go all the way to New York for me to . . . ”
“Not your Ghostbusters. The four guys in New York.”
There was a brief awkward moment in which they just stared at each other.
“Oh,” she finally replied. She glared at him for a few seconds then sighed in resignation, pulling off her hat. “You don’t play fair sometimes, Sherman.” Harvey smiled brightly and ran over to help her out of her coat. “You know, Jake’s gonna be pissed.”
“Tell him it’s his own fault for insisting on that clause in your contract,” he muttered, chuckling.
She frowned. “I will not! One more remark like that and you can just sue me!”
“Yes, yes, fine, fine. I’ll let you handle Jake.” Undaunted by her irritation, he sat on the edge of his desk again and proceeded to fill her in.
