Chapter 194
Katara woke hours later only to be reminded of her family once more by Zhao 1. His bedhead was just as wild as Toph’s and he whined much like Sokka did when he woke up. His pained groans of “Please make it stop” were close enough to Sokka’s frequent “please make Momo stop” that she smiled. She rolled over, yawned and stretched before sitting up. She put on a robe before lumbering to the door and asking for two large tubs of water before continuing her journey to the bathroom. As soon as she walked back into the room Zuko and Zhao 1 raced past her, apparently having to pee like an ostrich horse trumped the desire for privacy.Several moments later Zhao 1 emerged, a look of relief and disbelief on his face, “It’s going to take him a while to drain that lizard. I had forgotten about the monster in Zuko’s pants and how much I want to cut it down to the size of a mortal man’s. How do you take that thing? I’m sure you want to cut him down to size more than I…aww Hell, I did it again didn’t I? Katara I’m sorry I didn’t mean…”Katara laughed. He’d been petting his crotch and mumbling encouragingly before he started speaking to her. She’d read his lips as he told his penis it was perfectly normal and Zuko’s was a freak of nature. She was still smiling when she replied to him, “I’ll tell you what. I’ll hold him down and you can chop it down to size. We can put some wasabi on what he’s left with and put the rest in the meat grinder and feed it to him.”A look of horror flashed across his face, “You do realize that is something a man would never do to another man?”Katara shrugged, “Well how about you hold him down while I do the chopping? One way or another I will cut it off and feed it to him. I just thought you might want a little satisfaction for your normal man sized penis.”Zhao 1 used both hands to protectively shield his crotch, “No wonder the evil which shall not be named likes you. You clearly possess a diabolical thought process that may rival his.”The older teen bowed deeply still holding himself protectively, “I am offering my services if you have plans for world domination and you need assistance bringing them to fruition. In the meantime, please don’t tell Zuke what I said about his penis. On second thought do; talk about someone in need of an ego boost. If he doesn’t grow a pair to match the size of that monster we’ll be stuck with that thing pretending to a human female as a ruler.”Someone knocking on the door prevented him from expounding on his thoughts about Azula.“NO!” Katara screamed when he stepped to open it. “You haven’t washed your hands and I know where they’ve been. Geez you really are as bad a Sokka.” She opened the door and waved the person outside in.Ami’s eyes widened when saw a different sleep rumpled Fire Nation boy in the room with the not quite dressed Waterbender and a messed up bed. She kept stealing glances at Katara as she and another person brought in the tub of water.“Hey Katara, could you open the door? There’s not enough water to wash my hands and I know 1 didn’t wash his after he used the restroom,” Zuko called through the door.Zhao 1 smiled walked to the other side of the room. He opened the bathroom door. When Zuko walked out he placed his hand on Zuko’s chest and squeezed his pectorals, “My dear you have such soft beautiful breasts.”“Get away from me you freak!” Zuko shrieked, crossing his arms across his chest.“Hey you’re letting him get away. You’re supposed to hold him down so I can have my wicked way with him,” Katara teased not thinking of how it would look to the outsiders.“I thought you already did?” Zuko replied innocently not sure of what was going on. He flopped down on the bed, “But I’ll be happy if you want to again.”“Hey you took my spot!” Zhao 1 pouted attempting to lie on the edge of bed not caring if he ended up on Zuko. “Katara make him move. I don’t like being next to the wall.”“Be quiet. My head still hurts,” Zuko groaned attempting to push the larger boy to the floor.“Mine does too which is why I want to lay back down,” Zhao 1 countered.Katara stared at them both as an eerie feeling of déjà vu settled over her. They had a similar discussion when Toph first joined the group. It was raining and she made a shelter for them. Of course noone including Appa wanted to sleep next the wet side opposite the edge of the cliff side. She responded the way she did then, “For the love of La will you both shut it. I’ll sleep next to the wall if it will make you babies happy.”She grabbed some of the water from the tub, whipped it around the soap, then both their hands before tossing it out of the window. She sighed and turned towards the hotel workers and sighed, “children” before smiling at Ami, “thank you for bringing the water.”Ami nodded and stepped out of the room. Jin would not believe this. There was a different boy in the room with her last night and now there were two boys in the bed waiting for her. The Avatar’s Waterbender was clearly a Fire Nation whore.Katara climbed over the two of them and lay next to the wall. When Zuko realized Zhao 1 was beside her he crawled over him to lay next to her. She bent more soapy water over to wash his chest before laying her head on it and falling back asleep.
The lone Firebender rose first. The sun was approaching its peak and practically screaming for him to follow the example of his lower half and get up. He extracted himself from Katara’s arms and carefully maneuvered around the other boy. His feet had barely touched the floor when Katara snuggled up against Zhao 1. She frowned in her sleep but didn’t move away. Zuko shook his head not sure if he should be amused or hurt to have concrete proof she only slept so close to him because he was warm. After going into the restroom and dealing with his morning rising he rearranged the privacy screen and bathed. When he dressed he picked up the unedited version of a childhood favorite and read.
Katara woke next. She ordered Zuko to push the tub in the tiny restroom. After she finished her morning ablutions she sat beside Zuko and placed her head in his lap, “Read to me.”“Will you take care of my headache first?” he asked. He relaxed against her hands as the water against his head began to tingle. When the cranial effects of his hangover no longer plagued him he began reading.Zhao 1 woke to the sound of a voice telling one of his favorite stories. He opened his eyes and watched his friend read to the Waterbender. It was heartbreaking to see how much Zuko loved her. If the world were different he could see the two of them being happy together. As it were the Waterbender was starting to soften towards him. If they lived in a place without war, a place where they had a real chance to get to know each other…. He sighed and rolled over. Zuko was one of the nicest people he knew; he deserved a true chance at happiness with a woman he loved for all he’d been through.Katara noticed him stirring and looked up at Zuko. The prince nodded at her. Katara smiled and motioned him over.He kneeled beside her, “Yes, milady?” He jumped when the water came towards him.“Relax. It will help your hangover,” Zuko advised. Katara nodded in agreement. This time he didn’t flinch when the water covered his head. After the pain was gone he took her hand in his and reverently kissed the back of it. “This life is a canyon to which there is no end.”To his surprise Katara patted his head, “I would gladly end my journey so thou wouldst make it to the end.”He smiled sadly at her, “If I had not already sworn my loyalty to him; it would be yours. You are a jewel. I am but a grain of sand.”Katara recognized that poem as well. The first he quoted and her reply was about friendship. The second was from the private collection of the first female poet laureate of the Earth Kingdom. Her father was head of the division literature division at Ba Sing Se University. He was dying from an illness so he betrothed her to his favorite student out of concern his young boy crazy daughter would marry the first man who tickled her fancy or worse ruin her future by allowing her fancy to be tickled without the benefit of marriage. The series of poems created by them used the metaphor of ancient desert burial ground and the royal treasure to describe their feelings on the arranged marriage. The diamond yearned for freedom. The sand was curious about the new addition to its domain. The glass was weaker than both of them but for centuries held firm. It had been scratched on the inside by the diamond and on the outside by the sand but still it maintained its role as the diamond’s protector knowing the underlying fragility of its charge. As the centuries passed the glass could not withstand the ravages of time and the diamond obtained its much desired freedom. It immediately wept for the shelter of the glass the moment it encountered the first abrasive grain of sand. This time she did not speak the following line; to do so would acknowledge Zuko’s claim of ownership and protection. Katara replied, “How I envy the aged. The most hellish of perils of youth are treasured when at the threshold of death’s door.”Zhao 1 knew that poem and the sentiment of wishing the horrors of life were already behind them. He replied with the one line he knew would uplift her, “The world I now live in is nothing like the world I once knew. I may not be here to see it but I know the times of my childhood will return once more.”This time Zuko recognized the quote. It was from the unedited version of Kuzon’s book. He’d practically memorized it in the short time he came to know it. His eyes widened, “But how?”“You forget my grandmother is not Fire Nation; she’s Earth Kingdom.” Zhao 1 went on to explain to Katara, “Grandfather was assigned to an outpost in a recently conquered territory rumored to be cursed. An epidemic swept the area as the fortress was being built killing Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom people alike. The disease killed his wife but spared his infant son. My grandmother’s first husband and newborn died as well. Grandfather was willing to grant her anything she wanted if she agreed to become uncle’s wet nurse before her milk dried up. She accepted his offer and asked that instead of burning the books he found, that he bring them home to her.A few weeks later he became base commander by default. All of the higher ranking soldiers died leaving no one to overrule her request. She was able to save every book in the Forbidden Realm and the lands he conquered once reinforcements arrived. As the years passed Grandfather came to appreciate the honest beauty of their uncensored forms. Grandmother jokes that Wan Shi Tong comes to visit their library to look for books he’s missing. The jackass couldn’t stand to look at us so most of the time we were shipped to their house. Old people like to make kids read”.This time Katara did laugh, “Now you really sound like Sokka. Tell me, when you were drunk did you see any friendly mushrooms?”“Um Zuko and I had the distilled grains. You were the one who had the friendly mushrooms,” he corrected. “Speaking of mushrooms, what’s for breakfast? I’m starving!”Katara blinked at him a few times. Aang had once told her the Air Nomads believed in spiritual quadruplets: a single complete soul in the spirit world that split into a person in all of the elemental nations as it crossed into the mortal realm. Part of the reason they traveled the world was in hopes they met their spiritual counterpart; doing so would enable them to reach a higher level of enlightenment. “Zhao 1, what is your real name?”“It is Jiangou. My brother’s name is Jianjun,” he replied.“What does that mean?” Katara asked timidly hoping he didn’t say anything close to the valuable creation and sharing of knowledge.“It means ‘building the country’ in modern Fire Nation but those same characters mean ‘loverboy’ using the ancient reading. Apparently someone found it more politically correct and prestigious to say it that way rather than man-whore who focuses on breeding. Why do you ask?”Zuko snorted. His friend normally said ‘loverboy’ as in ‘I love boys’. It was another reason he was his father’s favorite abuse subject; Zhao hoped to beat some man into him. Katara groaned, “loverboy” was also an alternative interpretation of her brother’s name. Aang said that when one met their spiritual sibling they would feel an incredible sense of peace and wholeness around them.“Aang says that everyone has a spiritual counterpart in another nation. You remind me of Sokka so much it scares me,” She explained before innocently asking, “So you do feel all warm and tingly around my brother?”“Lady Katara you have no idea how warm and tingly I feel around your brother. It’s like a part of me is yearning to reach out and be embraced by him,” he exclaimed honestly. “You should get to know him. You two would probably get along like mud and hogmonkeys,” Katara encouraged. If Sokka had friends on board there would be another person to look out for him.Zhao 1 smirked and replied coyly, “Who would have imagined that I’d find my soul mate in a Water Tribesman?”Zuko laughed so hard he fell off the couch. He knew precisely which part was reaching out to Sokka and wanted to be embraced. Zhao 1 had a very specific type – male but not Fire Nation. He could have stood completely naked in front of his friend next to the parka-clad other boy and not drawn a single glance his direction. The only reason he agreed Katara was one of the most beautiful women he’d ever seen was because he was able to compare her to her brother. Zuko was clutching his sides and rolling on the floor when the battle alarm sounded and people began screaming they were under attack.
Toast: Thank you for your kind words. I like writing the spirits. They originally weren’t part of this fic but wove themselves in. It always makes me happy to see their presence is a positive addition.
Raa.maa.daa.saa.hung: Thank you. Zuko was overwhelmed with happiness once he realized what Katara was doing. He’d always forced himself on her and knew she only gave in to protect Aang and Sokka. He’d never imagined that she would give herself to him without any type of coercion.
