Meeting
“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” Carl JungZuko watched Azula. The light from the sun framed her face perfectly. "Perfect", Zuko mouthed the word. The moment was perfect. She was perfect. Life was perfect. Zuko smiled.
"Stop staring, Zuzu.""I just like watching you while you sleep.""I can't sleep with you staring. It's creepy and weird." Azula opened her eyes. Her bluntness hurt Zuko. It showed in his eyes. Azula had an uncanny ability to read Zuko. It had given her the upper hand many times when they were younger. However, Zuko being an open book for Azula also made her a little too confident. Zuko built a wall from distrust, jealousy, frustration, and resentment to keep her and temptation out. In the past the wall wasn't enough so he avoided her and put distance between them. Almost that entire wall had been removed. She snaked her arms around his neck. "You won't let me sleep so,” she pulled him in for a kiss. "Tell me about the peace talks".This could be the perfect time for him to come clean and tell Azula everything. Scenarios played in his mind. The scenarios would start with a calm and caring Azula, but the scenarios ended with her firing lighting at him. His face twisted. "Lightning", he whispered."What?""Nothing. " Zuko swallowed hard. "Azula". He caressed her cheek. "I need to tell you something".Azula heard an unexpected seriousness in his voice. He turned away from her. "It's that bad, Zuzu". A knock at the door interrupted them. "I'll see what they want." Normally, Zuko would've severely chastised the person, but today he was relieved for the disturbance. "Security Chief Kira", Zuko attempted to sound more upset than surprised, "you should know not to disturb me and Princess Azula." The emphasis Zuko placed on Princess Azula was telling to Kira and Azula.""Forgive me, Fire Lord Zuko, but we have an important meeting this morning. You need to sign off on some pressing security ideas."“Oh yes, you’re right. I will see you in the throne room in 15 minutes." Zuko took a deep breath after closing the door. He didn't want to turn around and face Azula. If he waited too long Azula would become suspicious. "Azu-", he froze. He expected to see an angry Azula when he turned around. Angry Azula would be a better option, but she didn't appear to be angry. Disappointment covered her face instead of a frown. "I am sorry", he mumbled."Don't mumble it’s unbecoming of a fire lord."Now he knew he was in trouble with Azula. Zuko walked over and sat beside her on their bed. He took her hand. "I am sorry. I have to leave. I'll be in meetings for the rest of the day. Before I go I wanted you to tell you, I missed you." He kissed her on the forehead. "I couldn't sleep while you were gone. Someone put something my drink to make me sleep last night, probably because I sent Captain Yar to search for you. In my defense you were gone three extra days. Azula, everything I've done was to protect you." He kissed her softly. "Remember that", he mumbled against her lips before kissing her once more./////////--- Zuko hid in his throne room. Unnecessary meetings and busy work filled his agenda. This morning events played through Zuko's head as he pretended to listen to the merchant's association grievances. Earlier that morning, Security Chief Kira met with Zuko because he learned the name of the man responsible for getting the fake Kanzo hired in the kitchen. The culprit’s name was Suigetsu. Suigetsu was a forger, swindler, and thief. The criminal was wanted in the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. They said catching Suigetsu was like catching oil in your hand. He'd always slip through your fingers, which is why Zuko decided not to tell Azula. Sōsuke’s men had narrowed down Suigetsu's hideout to three possible locations. It was too soon to tell Azula anything. Zuko told himself that over and over. Lying to her would make things worst so he decided to keep his mouth close and avoid her. Tonight they'd open the arc. Zuko hoped there would be something in there to distract her.///// Azula had another distraction in mind. She eyed her father in the empty prison yard. "You're looking well, father. I guess you just needed some sun.”"Princess Azula, I am so glad you've decided to accept my invitation. It's been a long time since we've played Pi Sho"."Yes, it has." Azula sat. She knew the game was more than a father-daughter activity. Ozai asked her to play for another reason. She wasn't sure of the reason, but she was pretty sure it had something to do with Zuko. The former fire lord had become fixated on his successor. Ozai never thought of Zuko as being worthy of the throne. Zuko betrayed his country and his family.Ozai made the first move. Azula countered. The two attacked and counter-attacked in silence. Neither needed to speak. Strategy was a form of communication to them. Azula used a trick move to gain the advantage. She was a better strategist than Ozai assumed. Ozai was trapped."You're a much better player than my opponent yesterday. I expected more from him. At least his visit wasn't a complete waste. " He watched his daughter's reaction.Azula wasn't going to show any cracks in her armor this day. Azula made her last move. "I win.""I expected nothing less. Just like I expected you to recover from the attempt on your life. You are a winner Azula even in your situation. ""You're worried about my situation. Is that why you invited me to play today?""That and to warn you. You're not safe as long as you are seen only as Fire Lord Zuko's wife. It's his fault what happened to you.""Is that what your opponent, from yesterday, told you?""He didn't need to tell me. There are Fire Nation citizens that hate what Zuko has done. The Fire Nation is weaker than ever. We will crumble under his leadership. However, you have the power to change that. He fears you and will continue to keep you in the dark. His distrust of you is why he did not tell you where we went last week." Ozai, smiled at Azula's momentary look of shock. The shock soon turned to into a frown. "Yes, we had quite the time. I wanted to tell you everything but the fire lord wanted to keep you in the dark.""What happened last week?'"Ask the fire lord. I'm sure you can get it out him if you try hard enough. You are his weakness. No matter how much he fears or distrusts you, you hold power over him. Azula, you're the only one that can break him. You've held that power since you two were children. That's why I sent you after Zuko years ago. You were the only one I trusted bring him back. I know what you are capable of, Azula. You're the only person in this family I trust. I know you will make an excellent fire lord."//////////////////////"How did it go Princess Azula?" The tall water bender leaned down to speak to Azula. Miso wanted to get a better look at her face. Miso had urged Azula not visit with Ozai today. A visit with Ozai was not a good thing. The relationship between Azula and her parents was a dysfunctional one."It went fine, Miso. I told you it would.""Did it go well enough for you to discuss it with Fire Lord Zuko?""Miso, why would you ask that?" Azula stared him in the eye.Miso knew it wasn't just a question. She was telling him to mind his business. "You know I worry about you. I want to make sure you're okay before we start our next healing session.""I am fine. Let's get started. Zuko and I have to open the arc tonight. I want to make sure we are finished in time.""You're excited about opening the arc that's wonderful.""Let's go, Miso."////////////////////////////Zuko was late. He purposely stayed later than he needed to in order to avoid spending any idle time with Azula. Kira hadn't reported back. The missions had to remain a secret. Zuko took a deep breath and opened the doors to the secret chamber."You're late, Zuzu.""I know, sorry.""Let's not waste anymore time.” The new fire sage opened a scroll. "I believe I've figured out how the Arc of the Avatar works. The moonlight is the third key, which is why it can only be opened during a full moon. The full moon is also a timer. When the full moon moves out of position the arc locks itself. Also, it's not the number of scrolls that can be removed it's the weight. We can remove 12 small scrolls, six large scrolls, three large scrolls and six small scrolls, etc. We'll need to put back the scrolls we took out as we take out more scrolls. If we stick to the plan we won't set off any of the arc's traps. Is everyone ready?""Sokka and I are ready with the scrolls", responded Katara."We're ready with the pearls"."Excellent, Fire Lord Zuko and Princess Azula. Please place the pearls in the yin-yang lock. Avatar Aang and I will get the scrolls."The group worked together well. Aang and Kính search through scrolls. They grabbed six small scrolls each. The scrolls had matching gold seals. They assumed they were a set. Katara and Sokka managed to place their last scrolls back just before the moon moved. The arc closed and locked just as Kính said it would.Aang unrolled the first scroll. His face beamed with happiness. "These scrolls tell the story of the first Avatar.""If that's all I am leaving,” sighed Azula."No wait Azula. Aang tell us more," said Zuko in a voice that was so enthusiastic it sounded creepy.Aang quickly scanned over the scroll. "His name was Wan. I think he was a fire bender.""A fire bender, are you sure Aang?""Yeah, Sokka, I was first a fire bender.""See Azula, it has something to do with our history.""First avatar was name Wan. He was a fire bender. Wow, I have had my fill of history for the evening." Azula grabbed Byakurai."I'll see you later," said Zuko as calmly as he could. Azula gave him a smile that worried him. It wasn't playful, cocky, or maniacal. This smile was different. It was a soft smile but her eyes weren't smiling.////////
It was late when Zuko decided to go to bed. He'd listen to Aang narrate the first six scrolls. Wan was an interesting character, but he could not hold Zuko's attention. Something strange was going on with Azula. Azula was asleep by the time Zuko returned to their bedroom. Zuko thank the spirits. He went into stealth mode, as he got ready for bed. He slid under the covers."Zuko, tell me about your trip to the Earth Kingdom"."I am too tired to talk about it." He kissed her cheek. "We'll talk about it later." He rolled over.It was the first time he’d laid with his back to her since the poisoning. "Alright," said Azula in a monotone voice.Something was off. The smile from earlier combined with Azula's "alright" said a lot. Worry seemed to wrap itself around Zuko. He didn’t want to dwell on it. Something important was going to happen. While Zuko was on his way to his bedroom, he received a message from Kira to meet him the special interrogation room in a few hours. The young fire lord was too anxious too wait; an hour after going to bed Zuko decided to head to the interrogation from. His movements alarmed Azula. "Where are you going?""I'm thirsty." Zuko got up. "I'll be right back." Zuko put on a pair of pants and a shirt. He looked at Azula over his shoulder. She appeared to be asleep. Zuko slipped out of the room.Azula wasn't asleep. She'd been awake the entire time. The princess pulled off her robe. She was fully dressed. Ozai told Azula Zuko would have a secret meeting late tonight or early tomorrow morning. She followed Zuko. Azula was like a cat, able to move without making a sound. Stealth came natural to her. Zuko never realized she followed him."The old torture chamber. What are you up to Zuko?" Azula peeped through the keyhole. There was a man with a long moustache and comb over strapped in a chair. The man was bleeding from the nose. The grimy guy still had a smug smile on his sweaty face. Kira and Zuko were standing to the side of the man."Fire Lord Zuko Suigetsu refuses to tell us anything.""I'll make him talk." Zuko took a dagger from the table."You, what are you going to do?" Suigetsu laughed.Kira jerk the man by his ripped collar. "Don't speak to Fire Lord Zuko that way.""Security Chief Kira, I'll handle him. " Zuko's eyes locked on Kira. "Don't interfere." Kira backed away. "Forgive me, Fire Lord Zuko.""What are you going to do, kill me? Humph. You're too soft and scared of the Avatar. If you were like Fire Lord Ozai I'd be scared, but you're not like him." Suigetsu started to laugh.Azula could not see Zuko's face but she could feel anger covering. "Zuzu's going to do it”, she whispered. A second later the man's laughter changed to screams when Zuko drove the dagger into the man's thigh. The sight sent a tingle through Azula. It was a side of Zuko she'd never seen. She bit her bottom lip."You're right, I am not like him. I CARE ABOUT MY FAMILY." Zuko yanked out the dagger. "Tell me who poisoned Princess Azula or"Suigetsu cried out, "No, I can't, he'd kill me. They're dangerous.""Wrong answer." Zuko picked up a kunai from the table."So this is what you been up to, Zuko".Zuko turned and saw Azula standing in the doorway with a smile on her face. It was more maniacal than happy. Zuko's demeanor changed. He walked over to her. His voice softened. "Azula what are you doing here? You should be in bed.""C'mon, Fire Lord Zuko, I can't let you have all the fun. It's my turn." She stepped into the room. Her eyes locked with Suigetsu. Azula laughed after seeing Suigetsu pee his pants. "Now you're wet it's going to be even more interesting." Azula began her formation to lightning bend. Small sparks formed at her fingertips.
"No, please, I'll tell you everything. Please, I beg you."Azula leaned against the door. Creating those small sparks depleted her energy. However, she wasn't going to let anyone in the room know. "Hurry up before I change my mind.""Ok, I didn't know about the poison. I swear I’d never do anything to harm Princess Azula. I just created an ID and references for a guy name Rinja. He works with this group of water benders and earth benders. I've only seen them from a distance. I don't know their names. I just heard they were responsible for robbing Tousen’s Mirage. They killed most of his security. Rinja was supposed to be a spy. They were looking to steal some goods. That's all I know. I swear on every spirit in the spirit world.""If YOU’RE LYING""Calm down Fire Lord Zuko. Tomorrow we'll have him speak to, your friend, the walking lie detector. I can’t look at him any longer." Azula left. Those small sparks wore her down. She had to lean on the wall as she walked down the hall. Suddenly, Zuko scooped her up in his arms. "I can walk Zuko.""I know. I just want to carry you." He was surprised she didn't protest. She relaxed his arms. The moonlight fell on Azula's face. She looked so peaceful. Her eyes were closed, but Zuko was not sure if she was sleep or not. He didn't say anything. There was a comfortable silence between them. Azula's eyes opened as soon as he laid her on the bed. She seemed to stare into his soul. He felt like a heel for not being honest with her. "Azula, I didn't go to the Earth Kingdom. The entire trip was about finding out who poisoned you. I didn't want to tell you anything until we had more to go on. I was going to tell you. "Zuko waited for her reaction. The last thing he wanted to do was upset her. It was obvious to him how weak she was after trying to create lightening. Azula was waiting for Zuko to tell her more. She knew there was more to the trip than what he was telling her. After a few moments she realized that was all Zuko would share for now. The fire lord was looking at her with those sincere eyes again. She didn't want to fight with him."Shame on you Zuzu,” she said with a tease in her voice. "I almost missed seeing you torture a prisoner. I didn't know you had it in you. " She gave him a wicked smile."I'd do anything to protect you. You're my wife, my family."
