Meanwhile, trouble was brewing elsewhere on Old Earth.
Z'neth timed his landing right so that his feet touched the cliff edge just as his exo-wings retracted into his uniform. Scanning the area carefully with his eyes, he looked up just enough to catch sight of Riptor and motioned for the dragon to find a landing spot.
The large blue and white dragon growled his displeasure, but obeyed, turning his wings to catch an updraft from the lava river below and banked to the right, heading for a spot where he could wait for Z'neth. The lead Dragon Fly could also make out the colored dots that were his other three siblings on their own dragons, searching the lava river for amber stones so as to help keep their cover story up.
Steeling himself, he walked forward on the barely discernible path, following it around the cliff edge and into a protected little cave. It was shallow, a near perfect scoop taken from the surrounding rock and inside it were large stones with flattened tops, almost like chairs.
In fact, one was actually being used as such, with the blue female mutant Nocturna sitting on it as she watched the cave opening. Seeing Z'neth, a smile slowly graced her face and she made a lazy hand gesture to the side, “Ah, Z'neth. So good of you to answer my message. Please, take a seat.”
He remained standing, reminding himself to be wary of her even as a slight warmth came into his chest, “You said you had something important to tell me, Nocturna. What is it and what do you want in return?”
She sighed, “Straight to the point as always, aren't you? You won't keep a woman entertained for long with that attitude.”
Z'neth grimaced, “I didn't know I was entertaining you. If that's all, I have to return to my duties.”
The blue mutant leaned back, a move that highlighted her body, and grabbed something from next to her stone chair. Sitting upright, she waved a stoppered gourd at him, “Don't be so hasty Z'neth. What I know, you'll gladly bargain for. Won't you at least share a drink with me?”
He frowned, asking despite knowing better, “What's in the gourd?”
Nocturna grinned, her slim fingers circling the stopper lazily, “Don't you trust me?”
Z'neth's frown deepened as he firmly repeated his question, “What's in the gourd?”
She sighed and told him, “Bitter Morning.”
The lead Dragon Fly was confused for a second before it clicked. He shook his head, “I don't drink, especially not while on duty.”
Even if he was willing to risk a sip, Old Earth alcohol was notoriously potent. Z'neth was a light drinker at the best of times and besides, he wasn't even supposed to be here. Nocturna let out another sigh, thankfully putting the gourd away, still stoppered, “Well, you're no fun today.”
He growled, “Nocturna, if that's all you wanted to talk about, I'll be taking my leave now.”
She twisted again, grabbing a large bag from behind her chair, “Wait Z'neth!”
Setting the bag in her lap, she flipped the top open and …..pulled out Peak's helmet. Staring at it, Z'neth had to force himself to not run over and snatch the bag from her. Instead, he sharply asked, “Where is he?”
The blue mutant shrugged, “In Warnado and that's all I can find out.”
She put the helmet back in the bag and held it out to him, “Here, that's as much of his uniform as I could recover. I couldn't get one of the gauntlets though, Gangryn's already broken it apart to get at the wind jammer technology.”
Z'neth swore to himself and accepted the bag. Opening it, he found his youngest brother's helmet, one gauntlet, the uniform shirt and pants and Peak's zoomerang. He looked up at Nocturna, “And you're certain you don't know where he is?”
She nodded to him, leaning back slightly on her seat, “He's not in any of the dungeons nor in any of the secret rooms that I know of. Either Dread's keeping him somewhere I'm not privy too, which is entirely possible, or he's having all the gifts routed through Warnado to throw anyone curious off the trail.”
Z'neth frowned in confusion, “Gifts?”
Nocturna nodded, “Well, who else would he be special ordering things for? Clothes that are several sizes too small, boots that most certainly wouldn't fit him and most of all, I doubt Lord Dread has any use for a hairbrush.”
She said the last word oddly, almost like she was tasting it on her tongue. Z'neth saw the curiosity in her eyes and said, “It's what humans use to help maintain their hair. Otherwise we'd have to cut knots and tangles out all the time or constantly wear our hair very short.”
Nocturna nodded slowly, “I see. That probably explains the razors he ordered too.”
Z'neth snapped, “What?!”
She gave him a strangely sad smile, “Oh Z'neth, that's the least of your worries regarding your brother.”
“What do you mean by that Nocturna?”
The blue mutant sighed a little, “Dread Wing ordered a box of....”
To his extreme surprise, Nocturna actually blushed before she gave a little cough and continued, “He bought a box of wedding supplies.”
The human frowned, asking, “And why should that worry me? There's no way Peak would agree to marry Dread Wing!”
Nocturna looked at him, clearly thinking him stupid at that moment, “Wrong kind of wedding supplies Z'neth. These are normally used during the night, if that helps any.”
Z'neth actually felt his brain screech to a halt as what she said finally clicked together. The look on his face must have been frightening, because Nocturna leaned back on her chair away from him, saying quickly, “Look Z'neth, I'll keep an eye out for him but Dread's on to me. He keeps giving me assignments that take me away from Warnado for long periods of time. The only reason I found out about most of this was because of my spies around the ship.”
He let out the breath he'd been holding and nodded sharply to her, asking, “And in return for this? What do you want Nocturna? Sanctuary on Airlandis?”
She grinned, exposing her sharp teeth, “Actually, I'd like my own Oasis, but I'll settle for your offer of sanctuary.”
It was practically their private joke by now, about the Oasis, but Z'neth knew that if the opportunity came up, Nocturna would take it in a heartbeat. Still, he nodded to her, “I'll talk to the council and see what I can arrange.”
There was no way he could hold the bitterness out of his voice though, when speaking of the council. While Nocturna's information and the returned uniform (partial as it was) would help prove that Peak was still alive, the council would likely still refuse to grant him and the others the night raid he'd been after for days now.
Nocturna finally stood and sauntered over to him, a little smile forming on her face. Standing before him, she tilted her head up, “Oh, I don't doubt you will, but how about giving me something right now to, ha, seal the deal?”
Z'neth looked down at her, lifting one eyebrow, “And that would be?”
She lifted one hand, holding it just off the side of his face, “A kiss.”
He should have refused her. He should have stepped back and gone on his way after thanking her for her help. But instead, Z'neth lowered his head, just enough to press his lips against hers. Nocturna pressed back, raising herself a little to do it properly.
It was a quick, chaste kiss but when they pulled apart, Z'neth felt his heart pounding in his chest and a regret that the kiss hadn't lasted longer. For a few seconds, he saw the same look on Nocturna's face, before she hid it behind a pleased smile, “A pleasure doing business with you, Z'neth.”
He gave her a little nod as he took a slight step back, “Keep in touch.”
Her smile widened and he had to go before something else happened. As he left the little cave, Z'neth turned his mind to how he was going to present this information to the council to best get them to agree to the night raid. If what Nocturna had said was all true, then they were on limited time.
Exactly what kind of limited time didn't bear thinking about.
