Haru stood half-way up the cliff and stared out at the valley. If you didn't know a camp was there, there would be nothing to see. To someone who didn't know, it was a barren landscape in the middle of the Red Dessert, named after the red sand that covered everything.
The color made it easy enough to craft tents that blended in with the hills and kept people from being scorched by the heat. The only problem they had was water, but there were springs and wells had been dug. They made him think of Katara and he smiled. It had only been a week since she had left him sleeping and vulnerable by himself in the middle of nowhere, but he would show her.
He had no way of knowing which way she had gone. He didn't know the terrain, and he might have stumbled into anything or anyone. He'd stumbled into Jin Wu and Yun Qu. They were sisters and at first he thought they were going to kill him. He'd pleaded with them and when he mentioned the Fire Nation Queens who'd abandoned him they gave him food and water and introduced him to a new army.
This was where the real rebellion was. Once upon a time Haru had thought he was against anyone from the Fire Nation. He thought he fought for freedom. Now, he just wanted to show Katara that he was a leader and that he knew how to bring people together. He wanted her to see that he wasn't a kid anymore and that she needed him.
The people here were a mixture of refugees, ex-fighters from an underground fighting ring, and militia who were cast out of their positions by a throne they were no longer loyal to. Haru began training them, showing them everything he knew about Katara's military tactics, about the earth bender's abilities, and about Katara and everyone he had traveled with.
They had already taken two cities and sacked them for supplies. They used tactics Katara would have berated, but they worked. He would give them the advantage, and when they defeated Katara's army she would finally have to come to her senses. The new Fire Lord wouldn't stand a chance against them, and Katara would need a father for her baby.
"You're making a great target," Jin Wu said. Haru jerked in surprise, but tried to brush it off before she noticed.
"You wanna give our position away?" her sister asked.
"Of course not. Let's go," he said and led the way down to their tent.
----------------------------------------------------------
Katara had left Jang Hui with a sense of purpose and meaning. With her friends encouraging her and Mai, who never left her side, she felt confident that whatever happened she was doing the right thing by standing by Zuko and Mai. With that thought in mind she had decided they would spread her message and help the Fire Nation people any way they could as they made their way back to the Capital.
It had only taken a few days for the Sea Ravens and Ninni and Uma to make it from the capital to Jang Hui on mongoose dragon. They had a much larger entourage and they would have to walk, so it would take them a little longer, but soon she and Mai would be reunited with Zuko.
All of that hope drained out of her as she took in the horrors of Shu Jing. They had been traveling for only a day before cresting the hills of the once beautiful countryside. Now it was all sand and ash, burnt to the ground. Katara blinked back angry tears and marched all the way to sword master Pindao's estate. It too showed signs of fire, but it still stood.
Her friends trailed in her wake as she pushed through the open front door. They searched the vast mansion, but couldn't find the lord of the manor or anyone else. She called for anyone to answer her, and she finally found a maid hiding in a closet. She huddled in the corner and put her hands up to ward off attack.
"Please tell me. What happened here?"
"I…I don't know," the girl sobbed. "There were fire benders. Our own people. They just burned everything they couldn't take."
"Where is Master Pindao?"
"He's not here. He went to the Earth Kingdom before the eclipse. There were only a few of us left here to keep the mansion."
"Where is everyone else?"
"Dead," the girl cried. "They're all dead. I'm only alive because I hid."
"What about the city?"
"I don't know, I've been too afraid to leave this closet."
Katara clutched the girl to her while she cried. Gently she pulled her out of the closet and handed her over to Ninni, then asked the Sea Ravens to search the grounds for survivors or enemies.
"What are we going to do?" Suki asked.
"We're going to find the creeps," Toph answered.
"I recognize these," Mai said. She had cuffs in her hands. "These were used by the Agni-Mizong to hold fighters. They must be from the caravan."
"First, we have to go to the city and hope they didn't burn it to the ground too," Katara said softly.
The city was exactly how Katara feared it would be. Fires were still burning, the ground crunched under their feet, and the dead were left where they had tried to defend themselves. "I don't understand," Katara bit out. "Those fighters were slaves, and from all nations. Why would they do this?"
"Because their brains are mush," Mai said. "Ty Lee and I were only with them a very short time and it was hard not to forget who we were. Most of these people have been fighting their whole lives. They see honor and glory in it. They probably don't know what to do now that they're free. They would probably do anything someone with authority told them to do."
"I don't want us to spread out to far from each other," Katara said raising her voice. "We don't know if they're close so we need to stay within ear shot of each other, but we need to look for survivors."
No one questioned her authority. Carefully they searched each charred shop and home, calling out to anyone who could answer. The survivors were taken to Katara, Ninni, and Uma. The dead were respectfully dragged or carried to the center of the scorched city.
Katara collected bits of the tragic event from the people she healed. A band of fire benders and fighters led by sisters covered in tattoos. They had tried to recruit people who were against the new Fire Lord. Everyone else was left for dead.
"Jin Wu and Yun Qu," Ty Lee offered. Mai nodded.
"You can bet they aren't leading the charge though. Someone is giving them orders."
Katara felt a desperate panic seize her. How could she stop this? How was she going to spread hope with so much hate?
"You will find a way," a small voice assured her. She looked for it and found Kwan crouching next to her. Masato's little sister had a sweet voice and her eyes were a piercing purple color. Her unwashed hair hung in thick, short, locks hiding most of her face and her dirty white dress barely reached her knees. Katara felt a chill.
"Why are you still wearing those dirty clothes? Let's find you something clean to wear," Katara said and took the little girl's hand. It was the first time she had seen Kwan without her blanket wrapped around her and it baffled her that Masato had not cared properly for the girl while they had been in Jang Hui. It was a sort of refuge for Katara to care for her.
She and Mai washed her. Katara ripped one of her own under-dresses the best she could to make it fit her.
"She's a cute kid, but a little intense," Mai said once the girl went to find her brother. "Luckily for her we escaped before her brother's training could really begin."
They arrived at the city's center where the dead had been gathered. Mai threaded her fingers through Katara's and squeezed her hand. "I know this is hard on you."
Other hands touched her shoulders and Katara found strength from the support of her friends. "Toph, would it be difficult to bury them?"
Toph didn't answer. Instead she and Masato began the task of sinking them into the earth, and covering them with the dirt and soot of their former city. The rest of the entourage and the survivors stood, watching silently, and mourning.
Katara felt a tug on her dress. It was Kwan. She smiled up at her and held up a ripe peach. "Peaches are a sign of hope for the Fire Nation," the little girl said and pressed the peach into Katara's palm. It was such an odd thing for a little girl who had been born in the Earth Kingdom to say.
Katara brought the peach to her nose, breathed in the sweet scent, and an idea came to her. She knew the Foggy Swamp Tribe were able to grow plants with water bending. She didn't know if she could do it, but she knew how to use trees to meditate and she wanted to try. Holding tight to Mai's hand she carefully stepped onto the mass grave. Once she reached the center she knelt to the ground.
"Please stay with me, Mai"
The other woman knelt behind her. "Of course. What are you going to do?"
Katara dug a shallow hole with her hand and placed the peach in it. "I'm going to try to grow a tree."
"Please don't over exert yourself," Mai said softly and put her arms around her, placing her palms on Katara's still growing belly.
As the crowd looked on, Katara raised her hands and drew water from the air. She poured it on the peach and sent it into the ground, searching for more water. She did it slowly, making sure to breathe. She finally found it, and it was deep, but she had already created paths during the search. She pulled on it gently drawing it to the dirt beneath the peach.
She spent long moments in meditation, following the water to life. There were insects and sandworms, roots that hadn't yet given up, and of course the peach pit that would provide new life.
Slowly and deliberately Katara forced her way through the cells of the pit, and worked her way back out, spreading her roots and soaking up water as she went. She opened her eyes when the crowd gasped and saw the small shoot of the new peach tree. Ninni and Uma sat on either side of her and took her hands, adding their strength. The peach tree grew, wide enough that the four girls felt the ground move under them, and tall enough that there was shade. Katara followed the veins, teaching the other two healers how to focus on them.
Katara could feel the life force of the other healers as they helped her grow the tree. She could feel her son, healthy and kicking. She felt powerful and full of love and energy.
Branches stretched out, leaves grew, and flowers blossomed. She could feel Mai, strong and solid against her, and she could feel the life forces within her. Another new life. Mai gasped and buried her face in Katara's hair. Grass grew up from beneath them, and flowers honored the memory of the people buried beneath them.
The crowd was in awe, and when the healers were done the monument bore fruit and its roots reached so deep into the ground it would never be thirsty. For a while Ninni and Uma just stared up and the tree they helped create, and Katara was tired and proud and thankful, but she turned her attention to Mai.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, it's just," she paused, still holding onto Katara. "I've never felt anything like that before."
Holding onto her hands, which were still on Katara's belly, she asked, "Did you feel it?"
"Yes," Mai said. "I didn't know. I wasn't hiding it. I got sick, but I thought it was from all the tattoos."
"I thought you were different. You've gained a little bit of weight," Katara said with a smile in her voice.
"I had been fighting constantly. I thought it was from training so much."
"What about your monthly?"
"It didn't come while I was in the fighting ring, but I was under the constant threat of rape or death. I just thought my body was handling the stress," Mai said sounding distraught.
Katara turned as much as she could to hug the other woman. Now that they had bonded Katara felt comfortable swirling her water ribbons around Mai, checking to make sure she was healthy.
"Why are you upset? You should be happy," Katara said and smiled.
Mai's eyes were huge and for the first time Katara could think of she saw fear in them. "I…I am happy. I just can't believe I've been pregnant this whole time."
Then a horrible thought occurred. "Has Zuko been your only lover, Mai?"
"No. But unless your healing abilities extend to impregnating women, it's definitely Zuko's," Mai replied sarcastically.
Katara burst into laughter. Mai glared at her but it only made her laugh harder. Finally, unable to hold onto her ire, she started laughing too. The crowd approached the tree, touched it, and picked peaches in amazement.

Aang helped The Duke climb into Appa's saddle. Behind him were Pipsqueak and Sokka. He was glad for the company, but missed Katara and Toph.
"Thank you," Zuko was saying. "If you happen to meet up with Katara and Mai…"
"We'll let you know," Aang said and nodded reassuringly. It would have been easy to find them, to bring them back on Appa, but they were spreading a powerful message to everyone who saw them together. They were getting reports from supporters as well as protestors. Bringing them back on Appa might be seen by both sides as a weakness, like they were giving up.
He shifted his position on Appa's neck. These robes were heavy. They felt like a net to catch him and hold him down. They felt like adulthood.
"Wait!" a voice called. On ji ran toward them with a scroll in her hand.
Zuko took the scroll and unrolled it.
"What is it?" Aang asked. He and Sokka leaned over to get a look.
It was a depiction of Katara in full Fire Nation regalia, water swirling around her pregnant form. Mai was beside her with her back turned, knives held in both hands and dressed in black. Her hair was shorn and her back was covered in intricate markings that were hard to make out. Both of them wore Fire Nation crowns. Across the top it read: Lady Katara, the bridge to the North and South, Liberator of the East, and Mother of the West. Across the bottom it read: Lady Mai, the Defender of our Hope, Khukuri of our Peace.
"Is that good?" asked Sokka.
"Or is that bad?" finished Aang.
"Both," Zuko answered. "People who want the war to end will see it as a good thing. People who don't want a water bender sitting on a Fire Nation throne won't."
A hard knot formed in Aang's chest. Katara was beautiful, and as always she was doing her best to help people. "I will never abandon people who need me!" he remembered her declaring. He believed her.
He recognized the pain on Zuko's face and sympathized, even though he wished things had turned out differently. "They'll be here soon, Zuko."
"I hope so. I need them."

The twins liked to compete in everything they did. If Jin Wu could lift a boulder, Yun Qu would lift a bigger one. If Yun Qu could run ten miles, Jin Wu would run fifteen. And if Jin Wu could swallow his entire length, Yun Qu would do her best with his testicles.
The first time they had brought Haru to their tent he'd been surprised that sex was their agenda. He wasn't attracted to them, but the sisters had almost came to blows over who would do what. Both of them were muscular, beyond most of the men, even some of the ex-fighters, which had Haru reconsidering telling them there was nothing to fight over.
After the third or fourth time he grew used to it, and now he even enjoyed it. In fact he really enjoyed telling them what to do and how he wanted it done. That way there was no fighting, and he was satisfied when it was over.
"Easy, Yun Qu," he hissed. She eased up, sucking as she pulled away letting them pop out of her mouth. Jin Wu pumped her mouth up and down on his shaft, humming as she went. He thought he saw her send a triumphant look to Yun Qu for being reprimanded. "Take this off," he told her to get her attention. She removed the black vest she always wore revealing her small perky breasts.
Haru ran a hand over them and drew her forward for a kiss. He closed his eyes as he laid back and pictured Katara. Her breasts would be much fuller and heavier. Her skin would be softer. Her smell would be intoxicating. He groaned at the thought of being able to run his hands over her body like this, then he came in Jin Wu's mouth.
He knew it would spark an argument and that he would be on his hands and knees for hours trying to make up for it, but he couldn't help it. Thinking of Katara always made him come faster.
Not wanting to show any sort of weakness in front on her sister, Jin Wu swallowed and kept sucking until there was nothing left in him. Haru relaxed and sighed.
"That was fast," Yun Qu noted.
"Maybe we are too much for you," her sister agreed.
At least they weren't fighting.
"Come here," Haru motioned to Yun Qu. "I want you first."
"It's so cute when he tells us what to do," Jin Wu said without sarcasm.
Yun Qu finished undressing and gracefully swung a knee over Haru's head, placing her hot quim in front of his mouth. He ran his hands up her thighs and over her ass so he could guide her in closer. Yun Qu had a sweeter taste, where as her sister was rather bitter. He felt Jin Wu running her hands over his spent manhood and knew she wouldn't give up until he was stiff enough to ride while he pleasured her sister, so he closed his eyes and let his thoughts wander back to Katara.
They would have to run into Katara soon. He'd seen the flyers of her and Mai and knew they must be near. Hira'a Village was their next target, and then on to Juang Hui. It was the last city between the mainland and the islands. Surely her small entourage would be headed this way, and then it would be her naked silky body pressed against his instead of Jin Wu's.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Where's your sister?" Toph asked Masato.
She felt him look at her. They had arrived in Hira'a that morning and were grateful to find it unharmed. Their original group of travelers had turned into a rather large army of refugees and supporters, all of which the small city found a challenge to accommodate. There was worry that the rouge army attacking small defenseless cities would attack here, so even though they were overflowing into the surrounding forest, everyone was glad to see them.
"How do you know she isn't right here?"
"I don't feel her."
"I don't understand how you do that. Maybe if I blindfold myself for a few years it would make me a better earth bender." She could hear the smile in his voice, and it made her smile.
"Maybe, but I've had a lot of practice."
"Can I tell you a secret, Toph?"
"Sure, I'm sorta good with secrets," she said. She'd kept Katara's pregnancy to herself. What was one more secret?
"Kwan isn't my sister. I don't know who she is, or where she came from."
"Then how did she become your sister?"
"I lived in Yu Doa, in the Earth Kingdom, with my parents. It's right on the water's coast. It was a good city until the Fire Nation Navy showed up. They started taking over everything. Taking houses that didn't belong to them, shops and businesses, food, whatever they decided they were entitled to. All of the benders were rounded up and put on a ship, including me. I have no idea what happened to my parents. They weren't benders so hopefully they're still there." Masato paused, and Toph waited for him to continue. It was a familiar story and she knew there was nothing she could say that would make him feel better.
"On the ship there were a lot of people, not just from Yu Doa, but from all over. I don't know all the places the ship went, but more people were herded onto it until we barely had room to sit. That's when I found Kwan. She was so small and helpless, and she wouldn't talk. Most of the time she wouldn't do anything. I had to coax her to eat. I thought she was going to die. Every morning when I woke up the first thing I did was see if she was still alive. Eventually the ship stopped and they started herding people off. I kept Kwan with me, afraid she would get hurt. Then the dogmen boarded the ship and sized up the benders, buying us like cattle."
"The what?"
"Dogmen. They're like slave owners, only their slaves fight in the Agni-Mizong."
Toph nodded.
"Anyway, when one of the dogmen asked about me the guards said she was my sister and sold us both to him. He liked the deal because he could use her as leverage to get me to fight."
"And she never spoke to you? Even while you were in the Agni-Mizong?"
"The only time I've ever heard her voice was when she handed that peach to Katara back at the last city we were in."
"So how do you know her name is Kwan?"
"I don't. I couldn't keep calling her "hey girl" when I was trying to get her to eat, or sit up, or whatever. So I made it up."
"This story is getting kinda creepy."
"And that's why I don't know where she is right now."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I need to talk to you, Koko." Suki motioned to the girl and together they entered the woods beyond the city.
"What is it, Suki?"
"A lot has happened since we left Kyoshi Island, Koko."
Koko nodded.
"And once things are under control here, there is going to be a need for a Kyoshi Ambassador."
Koko's eyes widened. "You don't mean me, do you?"
"Well, no. Actually, I mean me."
Koko smiled in relief, but then the worry returned. "But who will lead the Kyoshi Warriors?"
"Well, that's why I need to talk to you."
Koko's eyes widened again. "You don't mean me, do you?"
"I do. I think you will make a great Kyoshi Leader."
Koko struggled with everything it would mean to be the Kyoshi Leader. She would need to get back to Kyoshi Island. "What about the protection of the Fire Lord's family?"
Suki shrugged. "I don't know, that's up to you now." Smiling she added, "But Oma would make an excellent team leader, and it would be awfully convenient if she got to stay here with Ty Lee."
"Ty Lee?"
Suki pointed looked in the direction of a copse of trees. Oma was leaning against a tree, her green kimono was open and her body exposed. Her eyes were closed, and her mouth was open, her expression one of pleasure. Another girl, who could only be Ty Lee, was kneeling in front of her.
"What are they doing?" Koko asked confused.
"Er…ah…kissing?" Suki offered.
"Ohhhhhhhh," Koko said finally understanding. "I didn't realize they were..."
"Ty Lee might even make a fantastic Kyoshi Warrior. She could be a really big asset with her skills. If you think so, of course."
Koko smiled. "Of course."

Ursa wandered through Hira'a in wonder. She had grown up here, acting in the theater troupe until Fire Lord Azulon had collected her to be Ozai's wife. He had come for her just after she had accepted a marriage offer from Ikem, the man she truly loved, and had torn them apart.
Was Ikem married now? Did he have children? Would he still be in this beautiful village?
Uncertain what she would find she made her way to the theater. It was just as she remembered it, and there were already actors onstage practicing for the next show.
"Pardon me," a voice said. "I am Noren, leader of this acting troupe. We don't usually let anyone watch the rehearsals. It ruins the plot for them when it's all finished."
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's only that I used to act on this stage when I was a girl."
Noren peered at her uncertainly, and then leaned in uncomfortably close to look at her.
"What? What is it?" she asked backing away a little.
"Ursa, is it you?"
"How do you know my name? I don't remember you."
Noren stared at her as if seeing a ghost. "Forgive me," his mouth said though it did not reach his astonished eyes. "I am being rude. Please, would you have tea with me?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Katara is mine," Haru growled. "I want you to stay away from her."
"We will go after Khukuri," Yun Qu said in a seething hiss. "For ruining our honor."
"We don't care about the rest of them," Jin Wu agreed.
This suited Haru just fine. His army was ready, waiting in the woods while he and the twins scouted ahead to the village.
"This doesn't look like an army. It looks more like the bazaar in Ba-hai. Just a bunch of people who don't know up from down. I'll have two teams attack from either side of the village, dividing their forces. That way we can sneak in and get what we want."
First Yun Qu nodded, then her sister. All in agreement, they headed back into the forest to gather their army.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
High above the land, he could almost pretend everything was peaceful. Aang closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep, spiritual breath. They had been in the air for only a couple hours and were passing over lush green landscapes complete with waterfalls.
"Poor Zuko," On ji said, interrupting his attempts at mediation.
"Zuko?"
"All alone in the palace, missing Katara and Mai."
"Oh yeah. Yeah. They'll be back soon though."
"Aang?" On ji asked while leaning over Appa's side.
"Yeah?"
"Is that fire?"
