Chapter 183
Jin looked at the table where Lee, no Zuko, sat with the Waterbender. They had stopped kissing but their faces were still close together. His lips moved but Jin couldn’t read what he said to her but it made her smile whatever it was. She had gone to the tea shop every day in Ba Sing Se and she had never seen him look so happy and content or smile so widely as he did at her. That smile went away when he realized she was looking at them. His eyes narrowed and his jaw tightened menacingly.Jin lowered her head to look down at the table. It was finally starting to sink in that he wasn’t the boy she thought she knew. The boy she knew would not have broken her arm and thought nothing of it. It was an accident; he had no way of knowing she was standing behind the door but the boy she knew wouldn’t have yelled and shook her. He would have asked if she was okay and helped her to a chair like he did the elderly woman he accidently bumped into at the tea shop. The Waterbender said that she was lucky that he wasn’t interested in her and that she didn’t really know him. She didn’t believe her but the boy she knew would not have thrown a fireball at her mother. She raised her head again to look at the Waterbender; the ugly bruises beneath her eyes and there were bruises on her face and arms. She had heard their argument so there was no doubt in her mind he’d done that to her. She had accused the Waterbender of making him angry but now after seeing the princess torture her childhood friend she was no longer certain the attack was provoked by the Waterbender. They were Fire Nation. Lee, Jin shook her head, Lee was dead. Prince Zuko and Princess Azula were the ruling family of the nation who cast the world into war. The kindhearted Mushi who encouraged her to go after him had to be one other than General Iroh. She looked at the girls around them. The one with long brown hair was no longer laughing she was frowning. The one with knives that the Princess had compared her to was sitting as still and silent as stone. The Princess was laughing at both of them.“I need to leave,” Jin declared while standing. The princess grabbed the hand that was in the splint and yanked her arm straightening it, “Is my company not good enough for you?”“No Princess,” Jin stammered as the pain began radiating from her wrist to elbow. “I am not good enough company for you. It is unseemly for one such as myself to be in your presence.”“So you are smarter than you look,” Azula smiled. “Well then be gone with you.”Jin bowed and quickly escaped to the kitchen to tell her mother what happened. Her uncle was cooking so he couldn’t stop and reset her arm. Even if he had the time he no longer had any of the necessary wood. “It’s okay Jin. We can go to the blacksmith or the cooper. They also fought in the war and know a bit of first aid,” Her mother said as she whisked her out of the back door. No one saw the ground open up and swallow them.
Katara and Zuko finished two servings each of broth and rice cakes before another of Jin’s cousin brought out the special. Katara felt as though all eyes were on her. In spite of Zuko’s reassurances she still felt dirty. The sensation was only worsened by guilt over the woman she’d pretended to threaten.
“What’s wrong?” Zuko asked sensing her discomfort.“I want to go back to the hotel,” she said quietly.Zuko nodded and called the retreating waiter, “Excuse me, but the other day we were offered a special service to have food brought in from the restaurant to our room at the hotel, is that still available.”“I’m not sure. I have to ask my father,” he said while lasciviously eying Katara.“Yes Prince Zuko, that service is still available,” their Ming advised while bringing her fist down on her brother’s head. “Stop being useless and go get some bowls.”“Brothers,” she muttered smiling at them.“Yeah,” Katara said smiling sadly back at her.Zuko pulled out his coin purse and handed the girl several silvers. “Take one of these to the jail for the Avatar and the Water Tribe prisoner.”“But we just took…” she began but stopped looking at the Waterbender and coming to a realization, “He’s your brother.”Katara nodded. Ming had seen many things on her journey to Ba Sing Se to look for her child’s father, including women who slept with soldiers for protection, not for themselves but for their families. “I’ll throw in some dessert for them.”“Most of the bowls are being used for serving. All we have are these old beat up ones,” her brother said returning with the containers and her son.To their surprise Katara took the bowls from them and repacked the vegetables, and picken all together while the rice, curry and soup got their own containers. They handed the extras bowls back to Ming but even with her careful packing they still needed help carrying them. Katara let the chatter of the boy her age and the little boy behind them carrying the rest of their food distract from the not so subtle whispers of the townspeople.Word had gotten out that Lee, the boy everyone knew Jin was in love with, was none other than Prince Zuko. It devolved from there. The Avatar’s Waterbender, the one chosen to restore hope to the world admitted to helping the Fire Nation conquer Ba Sing Se. She had beaten up Jin in the bathroom in a fit of jealousy as he watched; as if that wasn’t enough she threatened to kill the girl’s mother in front of them. Katara placed one foot in front of the other and walked stiffly back to the hotel.
