Chapter 182
Azula had heard about the Earth peasant that Zuko was rumored to have slept with. When she saw the girl passing by with her mother she knew it was a sign her good fortune had returned. “Excuse me but could both of you come here?”
Jin and her mother attempted to move away but they were cut off by soldiers. They only option was to move toward the girl’s table. Azula’s lips turned upwards. “There’s no need to fear me. That injury looks painful. Was it professionally treated?”
“No, ma’am it wasn’t. The doctor won’t be in town for another week. My brother wrapped it,” Jin’s mother said quietly. She was still rattled by the other confrontation and didn’t want to risk attracting the ire of the Fire Nation now that she no longer had the prince’s protection.
“Shameful. What did I ever do to deserve such misery? All my life I’ve had to clean up after him. I’ll have someone fetch a doctor. Sit with us until she gets here,” Azula said scooting over and patting the seat next to her.
“I don’t know about this,” Jin’s mother said as her sister-in-law rushed past her carrying a tray.
“It will be fine. I know you’re apprehensive and concerned for your daughter’s safety but I promise she’s in good care. She needs real medical attention if she wants that arm to heal properly. I can make sure she gets it. She isn’t the first girl to be hurt by my brother’s disgusting actions.”
The older woman relented when her sister-in-law rushed past again. She was one of the primary cooks. If she was delivering food they were in trouble. She heard the princess say, “Summon Dr. Amayu to treat this girl’s arm” and Kin rushed to the kitchen.
Azula’s sweet smile morphed into one more sinister, “Now that your mommy’s gone let’s get down to business. Where are my manners? Let start with introductions, Earth Peasant meet my brother’s fiancée. Mai meet the Earth Peasant my brother claims to have fucked in Ba Sing Se.”
Jin’s face crumpled as she mouthed the word, “Fiancée?” while staring at the scowling Fire Nation girl. “But Lee said the two of you were in the circus. That you threw knives.”
“I do throw knives, but don’t tell me you actually believed that I was in the circus?” Mai questioned haughtily.
“But his fiancée?” Jin repeated.
“I have more dignity than to be anyone’s whore,” Mai hissed.
Azula interrupted them, “Surely you didn’t think the Waterbender was his only woman? She’s clearly his favorite but Zuko is a prince. That’s where Mai comes in. He will need a proper wife to give him heirs if he ever hopes to inherit. Good ole Fire Nation uterus with a perfect pedigree and bloodline to give him legitimate children. What did the water peasant call you again? Minkpoodle.”
Azula laughed at both of their expressions before getting another idea. “Ty Lee trade places with what’s her name. I want to see what Zuzu sees in them.”
“Gladly. I don’t want to look at him,” the acrobat responded rising.
“Ty –Ty you are a genius. You over there switch tables with us,” Azula demanded to group of soldiers who were already eating. She and Ty Lee sat at the end of the tables while Jin at Mai sat side by side facing the back of the restaurant. Azula moved her chair slightly so she’d have a clear view of Zuko and Katara as well as the two girls at the table.
Azula poked Jin’s breast then pointed to her friend, “Well there’s one thing I can say for certain that you and the Waterbender have in common that Mai is sadly lacking.”
She pushed her food towards Mai, “Maybe you should start eating now Mai. Zuko apparently doesn’t like them skinny. Nevermind, I forgot you already eat like a dragon-moose. Perhaps you’ll be like your mother and get bigger in the hips and chest area after having Zuko’s children. We all know the Waterbender can’t give him anymore after losing the last one so you win in that area.”
“A baby?” Jin’s head jerked up and she looked from the princess to the back of the room. Lee’s hand was resting on top of the other girl’s stomach; her hand was on top of his.
“I guess you didn’t know that did you? He’s already gotten her pregnant. Zuzu juice must be very potent as the general consensus among the doctors is that she became pregnant their very first time. She would most likely still be pregnant if he hadn’t beaten it out of her. You aren’t pregnant are you?” Azula asked poking the other stomach this time.
“No I’m a virgin,” Jin shrieked angrily knocking her hand away.
“That’s what I thought,” Azula said nodding to someone outside the window. “That’s something else my brother doesn’t like or at least those who lack deep pigmentation. Perhaps if you spent more time in the sun neither of you would be virgins seeing as how quickly he relieved the Waterbender of that particular problem. What I am saying, Mai you were there. Why don’t you tell our new friend what it was like listening to him crawl between the legs of another woman and seeing how happy he was afterwards?”
Mai’s mouth remained shut and she glared at Azula.
“Why aren’t you speaking Mai? That wasn’t a friendly request. It was an order from your monarch. That is unless you want to learn what treason does to a family,” Azula hissed angrily. “You should also tell her about all the nights after the first one.”
The princess relaxed as Mai’s teeth clenched and she began speaking through them. Jin’s stomach turned as the slender girl told her everything. “That’s not Lee. That’s not him. He wouldn’t do something like that.”
“Will you stop with all this Lee crap? His name is Zuko. Say it Zu-ko. Why can’t you get that through that tiny little brain? At least the damned water peasant is semi-intelligent,” Mai said calmly to mask her anger.
“Only semi? I seem to remember you matching wits with her and loosing,” Azula clapped her hands enthusiastically, “That’s another thing you two have in common. Neither of you is as intelligent as the water peasant. It sounds like some type of joke doesn’t it? A dumb minkpoodle, a stupid earth mutt, and a smart water dog are all fighting over the same worthless bone.”
Ty Lee covered her mouth attempting to suppress her laughs. “I’m sorry Mai. It is funny when she puts it like that.”
“Ha ha. It is funny, so is the one about the dirty old man who got his hands on the fifth of a seven piece set. How did it go again? First time too small, next twenty had the same problems but on the twenty-first slipped right out after being stretched open too oft-” Mai stopped talking when the girl beside her covered her mouth and stiffened. She looked up and had the same reaction. The Waterbender was caressing Zuko’s cheek. They were kissing. She was the one to initiate the action.
Ty Lee stood and hugged her friend “Don’t look Mai.”
“Why she shouldn’t she look Ty Lee?’ Azula asked, “They’re doing it out in the open for the world to see? How many times did he kiss you like that Mai? I know this isn’t the same but seeing this must remind you of them. How about you Peasant, did he ever kiss you like that?”
“Nevermind I keep forgetting,” Azula said waving her hand dismissively. “He ran away when you tried to kiss him.”
Azula shook her head and sighed, “My dumbass brother is hiding in a city pretending to be a refugee and risks exposing himself by lighting the park lanterns using his Firebending in a pitiful attempt to make you happy but he didn’t want to touch you. It must be depressing to know that even though he prefers them meaty he still found you unattractive.”
After scoring a direct hit with Jin, Azula turned to her childhood friend, “What did he do for you Mai? What grand gesture and personal risk did he take to make you happy? I certainly don’t know of one. He challenged my father to keep her. He burned Father when he touched her. He hid her from us for weeks keeping her drugged and isolated just so she’d come to appreciate him. Was there some surprisingly brilliant and effective plan to get your attention?”
“He put this peasant, her mother, the insects she calls family and this run-down anthill under his protection but what has my brother done for you? Tell me Mai has he done anything other than break up with you in a letter and parade his whore in front you? Was there a grand gesture that came along with tossing you out like yesterday’s fish carcass? You are Fire Nation nobility but he treats you worse than these peasants and yet you remain loyal to him.” Azula frowned, “One thing I can say about the Waterbending bitch; I suppose I shouldn’t call her that since Father considers her his second daughter. She’s smart enough to dump a loser when she sees one and knows how to get what she wants. I suppose in that regard we really could be siblings.”
“Look at her she’s got the Crown Prince of the most powerful nation in the world wrapped around her little finger. In less than 24 hours she got my father’s approval, a crown and two vaults from Zuko. You’ve been his fiancé since childhood but he gives you seashells and fruit tarts and Father still hates you.”
Azula leaned forward, “You deserve better than that Mai. I can give you everything he hasn’t and so much more, Chancellor.”
