Chapter 178
Zuko looked at the Earth Kingdom girl. Jin was in the corner behind the door. Her mouth was bleeding and her arm was at an odd angle; the door had slammed into her and she’d been thrown against the wall when Zuko burst in. He noticed none of that only seeing that Katara was upset and water was dripping from the ceiling. Zuko’s arms left Katara and he turned to fully face Jin.
He bellowed, “What did you do to her? Why is she crying?”
Jin smiled, misunderstanding the action and took a small step towards him, “Lee, I’m so glad you’re here. She attacked me.”
Zuko grabbed Jin’s shoulders and began shaking her, “Why? What did you do to her Jin? Why is Katara crying? What did you do to her? What did you do to Katara? Why is she crying? What did you do to Katara?”
Jin’s eyes widened and she looked to Lee and the girl standing behind him, “I didn’t do anything! Stop it you’re hurting me! I didn’t do anything! Lee please stop, you’re hurting me!”

Katara placed her hand on Zuko’s forearms, “I’m okay Zuko. She didn’t hurt me. I’m okay.”
Zuko stopped shaking Jin and the bathroom grew quieter without the repetitive thud of her head hitting the wall. He angled his face in Katara’s direction. He took a tentative step towards her anxiously asking, “You’re okay? Really? You aren’t just saying it this time?”
Katara nodded and Zuko wrapped his arms around her, “I was scared. I thought it was like last time. I thought someone was trying to kill you again. I was scared. I was so scared I wouldn’t make this time.”
“It’s okay. I’m fine. She didn’t hurt me. I’m okay,” Katara crooned reassuringly bringing her hands around him and rubbing his back. He was trembling and sounded just as lost as he did while scrubbing away his skin in the shower, “I’m fine.”
“Are you really? Zuko asked lightly touching her forehead with his fingers making sure that she was truly standing before him healthy, whole and untouched.
She nodded, “Yes Zuko. I’m really okay this time. She doesn’t have a weapon. She wasn’t trying to kill me.”
Zuko placed his left hand on the small of her back and pulled her closer to him. He let his forehead rest against hers and caressed her cheek with his right hand as he peppered her face with gentle kisses, “I was worried. I was so afraid I’d let something happen to you.”
Jin’s stomach turned watching Lee’s affection towards the other girl. “How can you do that? She’s a liar. She’s nothing but a slut and liar. She’s betrayed the Avatar and she’s betraying you! I saw her! She was in the stable rolling around in the hay with another boy! I saw her. The whore was all over him!”
Zuko’s back would have arched even if Katara’s fingers hadn’t dug into his back. He turned to face Jin, spinning Katara around with him, “You saw her in the stables?”
Jin nodded, “She was with a boy. His skin was dark like hers. Their arms were around each other. She was on top of him. I know the two of you haven’t been intimate. My friend’s family owns the hotel. She told me that your sheets have been clean. She’s been lying to you and pretending to be a virgin while she has sex with him.”
“Did you see me?” Zuko angrily demanded as he let go of Katara.
“What? Why would I have seen you?” Jin asked surprised at the question. “She was with her boyfriend. They were fucking!”
“She was with her brother!” Zuko yelled slashing his fist downward and stomping the floor. “The dark skinned boy you saw her with is her older brother. I was there with them. Katara has never been with another man. I am her first and only.”
Jin reached into her pocket with her uninjured arm, “She’s been fooling you.”
“I found these in your room,” she said extending the tampons. “I know what these are used for. When I was in Ba Sing Se some of the women in my building had sugar daddies in the Upper Ring. They would place these inside them so the man would think they were virgins so they could go a longer time before they had to sleep with them. They would get more gifts and money if the man thought they were seducing a virgin.”
Zuko laughed; the sound was bitter and ugly, “You don’t know anything. I was seven when I first saw those. Women in the Fire Nation use those during their womanly time. My mother scolded me for wasting two months supply of them by pouring water on them to see how big they got. Katara has never asked me for anything of monetary value. She refused every item of wealth I have ever given to her. I have to force her to take them. I am the only man she has ever lain with and ever will lie with. I am the one who pursued her. I was so determined to make her mine that I didn’t give her the option to say no. If it were up to her she would still be a virgin.”
Jin’s eyes widened, “You and her? But the sheets were clean. I saw them this morning. You didn’t…you haven’t.”
“I didn’t think you were that stupid Jin,” Zuko said while pointing at the sanitary devices in her hand, “Accept the fact that you were a convenient distraction. There is nothing you could ever do to take Katara’s place at my side. You are only making me angry with your pitiful attempts to discredit her and get my attention. I should kill you for upsetting her. Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t end your life right now?”
“Lee,” Jin gasped his name in horror as it slowly began to dawn on her the type of situation she had placed herself in and the enraged prince was dangerously close to her. “But you said no harm would come to me! That I was under your protection!”
“Only as long as you did not participate in any subversive activities. It is a crime to attack a royal concubine. It is considered an act of treason against the royal who appointed her. Even if it wasn’t a part of the Fire Nation legal code you attacked the woman I love. You broke into our room and went through our belongings. You stole from my Katara, you angered my Katara. You upset my Katara. You accused her of being intimate with her own brother. I should kill you for that accusation alone.”
The temperature in the room was rising. The water that exploded from the pitchers and basins beneath the sink were starting to turn to steam. Katara wrapped her arms around Zuko’s waist and laid her head on his back. He linked his hand with hers but continued to shake with anger.
“Leave.”
Jin remained still. Obeying the Waterbender’s command would mean stepping forward towards the two of them to escape the corner the Zuko had slowly backed her into.
“Leave. Leave now,” Katara repeated as Zuko struggled to contain his temper. She knew it would not be long before he lashed out.
Jin was still unsure of what to do when the door slowly opened and a young voice said, “Cousin Jin, Auntie says it doesn’t take this long to clean the restroom. You can’t get out of your chores by hiding.”
The little boy stepped in and looked up at Zuko in confusion before breaking into a wide smile. “You musta had to go really bad mister. This is the room that ladies are supposed to pee in. Unless your Mommy drags in you in with her like you’re a baby.
“I’m a big boy I should go to the room for men,” he added pouting slightly while pointing behind him.
Jin stepped in front of him, “Please don’t hurt him. We’ll leave.”
He looked around Jin, searching for an older woman, “Where’s your Mommy? She must be really big if she thinks you’re too little to go potty by yourself. Is she a giant?”
Zuko shook his head and roughly replied, “No, my Mommy is dead.”
“Oh, my Daddy is dead too,” the youngster added, “My Mommy says that he watches over me from the spirit world and whenever I feel a warm breeze he’s trying to tell me hello. Maybe your Mommy and my Daddy are friends and this warm air in here is their way of saying hello?”
Zuko nodded, “Maybe so.”
Jin reached back to shield her younger cousin. Lee was still angry and shaking. She wasn’t sure if smoke was coming from his skin or if the water dripping from the ceiling was turning to steam as it fell on him. She backed up slowly pushing the little boy behind her out of the doorway as she kept any eye on her crush. They were safely in the kitchen when the adrenaline began to wear off and she started to notice the pain. She winced as she lifted it her injured arm with her intact one.
“I don’t know why you thought I would believe you were actually working. We haven’t had that many guest and none of them were in the back so you’ll have to be more creative than pretending to clean that restroom,” Jin’s mother scolded as she came from downstairs before noticing her daughter’s broken arm. “Jin what happened?”
