You take the elevator down to the extravagant lobby of Le Grand Paris walking toward the door. "Hey, how's my sexy peasant today?" Chloe shouts to you in a cheerful yet smug tone. "Not today, Chloe. I got a lot of shit on my mind." you say to her wearily but still manage to remain polite. She stands up from behind the counter about to say something, but you exit the hotel without saying another word. You walk down the block to a local Parisian pub. A large man with a beret stands behind the counter wiping the bar with a dirty rag. "Bonjour, stranger! What'll it be?" the heavy man asks you with a pleasant smile. "Give me a bottle of something strong and cheap." you reply looking at the various bottles of wine behind the counter. He convinces you to buy a bottle of a red merlot with a low price. He's about to uncork it before handing it to you when you interrupt him. "To go." you say flatly not wanting to spend your morning with the local Paris barflies. He shrugs as he hands you your change and you exit the bar and head to the park with your prize. You sit on the ledge of a fountain and uncork the wine leaving it in the bag like an old wino. You take a few slogs of the red room-temperature liquid as you glance over at the bronze Ladybug and Chat Noir statue. The sculptor glances over at you with a smile and a polite wave which you promptly return. You inhale deeply as you survey the park watching joggers and people walking their dogs. You hear a cheerful voice behind you ask: "Is this seat taken?" It was the blue haired girl from the bakery. Mirabelle? Maryanne? Marinette! That was her name you remember as you take another slug of the bitter merlot. "It is now." you tell her patting the stone slab next to you inviting her to join you. She sits next to you as you point the neck of the bottle at her offering her a drink. "No, thank you. It's a bit early for me." Marinette says politely waving her hand in front of the bottle. "You better be careful Lt. Raincomprix doesn't catch you drinking in the park. He can be quite stern when he wants to be." Marinette warns you as you reply with a careless shrug. "Is something wrong?" Marinette asks you with concern in her voice. "I got a lot on my mind is all. Nothing to worry your pretty little head about." you respond coldly taking another slog of the bag. "Believe it or not, I'm a very good listener and problem solver. Do you want to talk about it?" she asks you cheerfully. You let out a deep sigh and narrow your eyes at her. "Fine, but I doubt you can help me with this. My demons are mine alone." you tell her. "I can try." she says crossing her legs and folding her hands over her knee as she listens intently. "Have you ever been in love with someone who's in love with someone else?" you ask her. "Not exactly, but I'm in love with someone who barely notices I'm alive." Marinette says slumping her shoulders a little bit. "Oh? Who's that?" you ask her. "Adrien Agreste." she informs you. "I don't think I know who that is." you say with a shrug and another sip from your bottle. "Yes, you do." she says pointing at the various billboards and posters around the park. "The model boy?" you ask her with a hearty laugh. "Come on, Marinette. Rich people are usually assholes. You could probably find someone who's not a spoiled pussy." you snark at her chuckling at the thought. "I know him personally, he's actually quite sweet." she replies defensively sounding a bit hurt. "Is he? Now I kinda feel bad that I drew Hitler moustaches and devil beards on some of his posters." you snicker. "That was YOU?!" Marinette says sharply. "I thought he looked cool with the horns." you laugh as Marinette pinches the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger. "Can you focus, please?" she asks with frustration in her voice. "Ok, ok. I'm sorry. Look, if you like the model boy, why don't you just tell him?" you ask her curiously. "I can't. You know I'm clumsy. My words around him are even clumsier. I kinda sound like the adults on the Peanuts cartoon when I'm around him." she states. "Wa wawwa wa wa." you say imitating the cartoon characters. "Yeah, something like that. "Marinette says. "I get nervous and tongue-tied around him." she continues. "So don't look at him like a model. Look at him like a man." you explain to her plainly. "He's not Superman or anything. He eats, sleeps, and shits just like the rest of us. Don't be intimidated by his status." you continue as Marinette listens carefully. "I don't like the mental image of Adrien taking a shit." she says folding her arms in disgust. "Then just imagine him fucking a horse, that'll cure ya." you joke as you watch Marinette's face contort in horror. "Will you STOP?!" she asks you rubbing her face. "I'm only kidding, Marinette. I'm sure Adrien's a fine young man. I sometimes joke to mask my own pain." you tell her as your smile fades and you take another drink. "So what's your itch?" she asks you as you clank the bottle down in between you. "What's got you so upset that you're drinking in the park in the morning? Rough night last night?" Marinette asks you with genuine concern. "I did something stupid that I thought I'd enjoy (and I did), but I realize it's going to painfully bite me in the ass before it's over." you explain to her vaguely. "What did you do? Nothing illegal I hope." she asks you. "No, nothing like that. It was stupid, but not illegal." you explain. "Well? Tell me." she asks you awaiting your story. You take another drink and breathe in deeply as you exhale in a long sigh. "I fell in love with someone I really shouldn't have, but now it's too late. I'm deeply, passionately in love with them. I'm supposed to ignore my feelings and help him be with a woman he loves, but she barely notices his existence." you explain to the blue haired young lady. "I'm assuming you're referring to Chat Noir." Marinette asks you curiously. "Is it that obvious?" you ask taking another drink from the bag. "The way you spoke about him in the bakery was very heartfelt and passionate. You seemed almost overprotective of him. You looked breathless and almost swooned when you spoke about him. I thought it was kind of cute, you two would make a nice couple." she smiles at you in an attempt to cheer you up. "I love him, Marinette. I really do, but his heart belongs to Ladybug. He loved her first and I just get in their way." you explain to the concerned young girl. "I could talk to Ladybug if you'd like." Marinette informs you. "You know Ladybug too?" you ask her curiously. "Yeah, we're very... close." she replies vaguely. "If you'd like. I'm not fussed." you say casually taking another swig. "Maybe I'll run into Ladybug and Chat Noir later and I can have a talk with them." you explain to Marinette. "HEY! What do you think you're doing?!" a deep voice says behind you. "I warned you." Marinette says turning around to face the deep voice. You turn around to see a large police officer with orange hair and a baseball cap. "There's no drinking in the park. Go home and drink, wino." the officer says sternly. "Uh... we were just leaving, Lt. Raincomprix. You'll have to excuse my friend, they're from out of town and aren't familiar with our local customs." Marinette quickly says in an attempt to fast talk the burly constable. "Marinette Dupain-Cheng? If your father knew you were out here schmoozing with the local riff raff, he'd tan your fanny." Lt. Raincomprix says folding his arms impatiently. "Uh... they're going through a bit of a rough patch right now. Can't you let them slide this time? I'll take them home myself." Marinette pleads with the large officer. "You're lucky I'm friends with your dad. He always puts a couple extra doughnuts in the box when we get our order for the station. I'll let you two go with a warning this time, but I better not see your friend drinking in the park again. Do I make myself clear?" Marinette quickly nods at the officer with a grin on her face and quickly slaps you in the back of the head while maintaining eye contact with Lt. Raincomprix. "OW! Er... sorry about that, officer. It won't happen again." you say rubbing the back of your head. Marinette helps you to your feet and escots you out of the park and away from the officer as she waves him a polite thank you. "I told you! Now go home and get some coffee in yourself before you cause an international incident." Marinette scolds you as you walk down the sidewalk. "Yeah, you're right. I probably need to be alone with my demons for a while anyway. Good luck with that Adrien dude by the way. Don't let his fame intimidate you. Just be yourself around him and it'll work out if it's meant to be." you tell the young baker with a kind smile. "Thanks for that. I appreciate the help even if it's easier said than done." she smiles weakly as you sense her situation must be difficult for her. "I'm sure I'll see you around, Marinette. It's been nice talking to you." you say as you wave goodbye to the blue haired girl and walk away. "Good luck with Chat Noir." she replies as she waves back watching you walk down the block.
