Once inside, those who had brought their own skates sat down to put them on while those who hadn't got in line for a set of rentals. Stella was far from happy when she realized that both she and Tecna had brought their own while Brandon and Darcy had not. She sat watching with mounting jealousy, barely paying any attention to what she was doing as she put on her skates while Darcy shamelessly flirted with Brandon in line. For his part, Brandon did his level best to be a gentleman and ignore Darcy's advances without ignoring her, a monumental task if ever there was one.
A similar situation developed with Musa's group, as both she and Flora had brought skates but neither Stormy nor Riven had. While there was virtually no chance of Stormy trying to hit on Riven, there was a much greater chance of her simply outright hitting him. Riven's general stand-offish nature and Stormy's perpetual irritability made for a tense but largely quiet wait in line as the two studiously ignored one another. Fortunately Riven seemed to have gotten the memo about being nice to the Trix and didn't do anything to provoke her.
As it turned out, Prince Sky was the only one of the guys to have brought his own skates along with him, so while he, Bloom and Layla sat to don their skates Icy stood in line alone behind Riven, quietly fuming. Of all the luck. She should have known that Layla and every one of her friends would have their own roller skates while she and her sister witches didn't. Having to wait in line for rentals while the fairies skipped right past made them look laughable, especially since going rollerskating had been their idea in the first place. This whole evening was getting off on the wrong foot, and so far Darcy seemed to be the only one she could count on to do her part. She glared at the back of Stormy's head as the girl just stood there in line, quietly smouldering about having to wait in line with no one to talk to. She wanted to kick Stormy in the shin and nag her to talk to Riven, but with him standing between the two of them she was forced to simply stand and wait while the storm witch slacked off on her end of things.
Of course when it came Stormy's turn to get skates, that's when things started getting noisy.
"Gimme a size 7."
Hearing that, Icy leaned past Riven to speak to the guy behind the counter.
"Better make that a size 8."
Stormy turned to glare at the ice witch.
"I wear a size 7."
Icy stared back at her, unfazed.
"No, you wear a size 8. We live in the same dorm room. I've seen your shoes. If you go trying to squeeze your size 8 feet in a pair of size 7 skates your feet will hurt and you'll be cranky all evening."
Stormy clenched her fists and was starting to growl when Riven unexpectedly cut in.
"Look, if your feet are more comfortable in a size 8, get a size 8. We'll just tell everyone you're wearing a size 7. Who's gonna know the difference?"
Stormy started getting ready to yell at Riven for butting in, but Icy cut her off, dragging her finger across her throat in an unmistakable gesture. Reluctantly, Stormy throttled back on her anger and turned back to the rental guy.
"Fine. I'll take an 8."
By the time Icy got her skates and was sitting down to put them on Darcy and Brandon had already joined the others out on the floor while Stormy was trying unsteadily to get to her feet. Riven looked up from putting on his own skates.
"You don't look too steady there. Is this your first time on rollerskates?"
Stormy glowered at him from the corner of her eye as she held onto the arms of the chair behind her and tried to get her feet properly situated under her so she could stand.
"So what if it is? I know how to ice skate. It shouldn't be that different."
Riven just shrugged and turned his attention back to lacing up his skates.
"If you say so. If you need any help just let us know. We'll be glad to help you get started."
Stormy angrily surged to her feet.
"I don't need any help! Wh-w-whoa whoa whoa!"
She managed to catch herself on the arms of the chair as her skates went out from under her. Riven stood up and skated past her to the wall surrounding the rink proper.
"Suit yourself. We'll be around if you change your mind."
Sitting on the other side of her putting her skates on, Icy gave the storm witch a pointed stare.
"Listen, it's critical that tonight go smoothly for us. The last thing we need is you going ballistic. If they wanna help you then let them help, even if you don't need it. It's as good a way as any to keep them occupied while I'm putting the moves on Layla. That's the one thing I need you to do tonight, keep the others distracted for me. I don't care how you do it, just keep the others away from us, and do it without starting anything that might end up in a fight. In other words, use your head for something other than a Chia pet."
Beside her, Stormy had finally managed to get her feet under her, though she was clearly far from stable. Her legs were stiff and locked as she strove not to fall over again.
"Okay, fine, I get it! I'll keep 'em busy. Anyway, it's not likely I'm gonna get the chance to start a fight anyway. The way Darcy keeps flirting with Brandon in front of Stella she's gonna beat me to it."
Icy hadn't thought about that possibility. She finished tightening her laces and stood up.
"Good point. I'll go have a talk with Darcy. Meanwhile get yourself out there and keep 'em busy."
She slapped Stormy on the back, sending the hapless girl streaking toward the dividing wall between the shoe-change area and the rink. Stormy waved her arms frantically as she shot up to the short wall, flipped over it and landed flat on her back on the other side. Other skaters detoured around her as she slowly pulled herself up the dividing wall. Icy slapped her hand over her face and shook her head. This was going to be a very long night.
