"I've killed people."
"What?"
"Not just the dogman. I've killed lots of people," Mai said.
The statement hung in air between them. They had arrived at the fishing village that morning, which to everyone's relief had not yet been overrun with the war. The people remembered Katara and welcomed them.
Those who recognized Mai as Khukuri kept their distance, but after some curiosity it was discovered that they were sister wives of the new Fire Lord, and they took a new interest in her. Mai had brooded during their journey, keeping to herself, but now she was ready to talk.
She let her legs dangle over the pier and her feet dip into the water. "In the pit. We were kept chained. While one of us was fighting he held a fistful of fire over the other. There was never any doubt that he would hurt one of us to ensure the other fought.
Anyone who didn't perform was given to the handlers. Ty Lee was able to put on a good show and she was a crowd pleaser, but she really didn't like the tattoos, so she lost a lot on purpose."
"Mai, you don't have…"
"We are mostly trained to put on a show, to entertain, but if you want to keep the handlers off of you then you learn to win. The last fight is to the death."
"The tattoos?"
"They're only given to the winner of the tournaments. Ty Lee only has three of them, and I think they were all in self defense."
"Did you...were you…," Katara couldn't form the words.
"No. In case you haven't noticed, my back is completely covered." The first thing she and Ty Lee did after they escaped was change clothes, but feeling like she was hiding a dark part of herself she had altered her own and cut her hair so that her back and shoulders were bare. It was the first time her hair had ever been short.
"Is Ty-Lee...is there anything I can do?"
"No. She's a lot stronger than she looks. She was a hundred times stronger than I was."
"I would have done the same thing you did," Katara whispered.
In disbelief Mai risked a glance at her face, expecting disgust but seeing none. "Would you have?"
"As my dad would say, this is a war sweetheart. Why do you think I wanted to come to this village?"
"Why did we come here?"
"I killed three men in the first village I liberated in the Earth Kingdom." Katara slanted the word liberated.
Mai mulled this over.
"When you and Zuko found me in the fountain, I was exercising my penance. I thought if I saved enough people it would make it okay." Katara's voice sounded weary. "But it's never okay, and you just live with it, and keep trying to save lives."
"Does Zuko know?"
"Yes. After Zuko came back from the Boiling Rock we went after my mother's murderer. I thought I could kill him, but I couldn't. Some cold-blooded killer I turned out to be. Instead he tried to kill us, and Zuko…did what he had to, just like we did."
"You're still running from him," Mai ventured boldly. It was time to change the subject.
"Running from who?"
"Zuko," Mai said and paused. "You told Haru that we were your family, but I heard Toph and Suki talking about how you just left."
Katara's eyes were downcast and she said nothing.
"Suki's sending him messages. You can't expect him to drop his responsibilities and come get you."
"I don't expect him to do anything," Katara said angrily. "I never expected him to come after me."
"What did you expect?"
"Nothing. I didn't expect anything."
"But he's come every time. Don't you think this hurts him?"
"I don't belong here," Katara whispered, her soft voice full of angst.
"What?"
"I'm out of place. When we were fighting for our freedom it felt right, but now I'm just...in the way."
"That's ridiculous," Mai said looking at her.
"Is it?" Katara said to herself. "There's an entire earth army here because of me. There are whole hate groups dedicated to ridding the throne of a water bender. Our son is going to be a water bender, and those hate groups are going to target him too."
A boy, thought Mai. They're going to have a little boy. "You can't seriously blame yourself for any of that. Because of you the colonies weren't able to get a stronger foothold in the Earth Kingdom. Because of your alliance with Zuko other nations are willing to consider peace with the Fire Nation." She had seen their publicized wedding announcement along with the foreign peace talks that came out of it.
"Things wouldn't be so complicated if I hadn't gone back to Ba-Sing-Se," Katara said.
"I can't argue with you there. I've had a crush on Zuko since we were kids," Mai said to the water. Then she scooted closer so their thighs touched, the contact making her feel like they had a connection. "I used to play with Azula just to be around him. When he was exiled I thought I'd never see him again. In Ba-Sing-Se I kept hoping he would make the first move, but he was oblivious. And then you beat me to him."
"I saw you in the courtyard."
"If you hadn't caught his attention I might never have had the nerve to make him notice me."
"I think he noticed you in the court yard."
"You were exotic. Small, dark skinned, blue eyed." Mai paused. "I knew I'd have to assert myself, so I told him I knew about you. I think at first he was afraid I would tell Azula. It was exciting and I let him go back to you, but it was too hard to let you keep him to yourself. That's what you saw in the courtyard. Even then he was worried about you and afterwards he felt guilty. You were already under his skin. The only reason he and I got so close was because you left Ba Sing Se and he missed you." What she didn't say was that they had both missed her, that she knew Zuko loved Katara more, and that she was afraid Zuko would reject her when he saw how much she had changed. She was afraid Katara would too.
"It was only two days. Three if you count the day I left, and he was already involved with you. That bounty hunter," she said with more anger.
"We had to pay her three times the amount for the information because she was scared she would run across you again."
"Not scared enough to keep quiet."
"You regret that we found you?" Mai tried to sound as if the answer didn't matter.
Katara straightened up and pulled her feet out of the water, hugged her knees as much as she was able, and looked away. "No," she finally said. "I just don't know how things are supposed to work. I feel so useless and awkward."
After a few moments Mai said, "I'll help you."
Katara looked at her. "Help me do what?"
"Save the Fire Nation. That's what this is, isn't it? You're starting all over. Instead of liberating colonies and gathering an army, you want to stop the fighting. It's basically the same thing. But we have to do it while heading back to the Capital. You say you had to sneak away so that Zuko would stay and do his job, but Zuko will eventually put aside his campaign to come after us." After you, she thought. "And you've got a limited time before the baby comes."
Mai let it end with that and they let the water rise over their calves.
"Is there room for one more?" said a voice behind them. The girls inched apart in surprise to make room for Ursa, who sat between them. Mai glanced at Katara, knowing she was looking for a way to befriend their mother-in-law.
"I know a lot about doing what one has to, to survive," Ursa said while taking her shoes off, dangled her legs in the water, and for a time they sat in silence wondering how much the woman had overheard.
Finally she spoke again. "When I first heard that Zuko had taken a second wife I had to ask myself if he wasn't more like his father than I thought."
Mai turned her attention to Katara, who looked like she was going to be sick.
"But now I can see why the three of you need each other, and I'm so proud of him. When we got here these people were terrified, and are still scared that the war will finally reach them, but now they have hope. The Painted Lady has come to check on them and heal them, and her warrior protector is going to help her overcome the war."
Mai snorted. Protector? As if Katara really needed protection?
Ursa ignored it. "They even have faith in the new Fire Lord, even though he is Ozai's son." Ursa reached into her pocket and pulled something out. "Seeing your affection for each other makes it real for them."
They both stared at Ursa curiously, neither of them saying anything.
"I know you're still feeling each other out, but it's obvious to everyone that you've already decided how it's going to end. You're just trying to find the right way to get there." She looked back and forth between them.
"It's a long way back to the Capital City, and I'm certain we'll see a lot of people along the way, so I thought you could use this." She unfolded the parcel in her lap. Inside the cloth lay a beautiful Fire Nation crown. Her crown. She held it out to Mai. "If Katara wears hers, and you wear this one, it will be a powerful message to anyone who sees you."
It seemed so impossible that a pit prospect could wear the crown of a queen, even though she had once worn one that could outshine this one. The idea almost turned Mai green, but Ursa placed it in her hand. "I don't know if I can wear this," she said.
"Of course you can. You've survived through more than most, and a simple bauble won't make it any more or less. It doesn't have to mean anything to you, but it will mean everything to your Nation. The three of you will pull this nation together."
Her words sat in Mai's chest. Your Nation, she thought. My Nation. Our Nation. Katara still looked like she might be sick.
Ursa swept up Mai's hair, tied it off with one of her own ribbons as she'd done many times before the pit fights, and tucked the crown firmly into place. Then, to their great surprise, the older woman clutched them both to her. When she let them go she dried her eyes before she pulled her feet from the water and retreated into the dark village.

Zuko stood on the balcony looking out over his kingdom. None of it seemed real but in two weeks he had made vast decisions for this country, sent emissaries to withdraw troops from other kingdoms, replaced all of his father's supporters with people he could almost trust, helped Aang rebuild the spirit temple with sages from the still-secret Sun City who would be dedicated to preserving the Avatar, and maintained a working partnership with Aang.
He was increasingly worried about the state of the country. The changes he was making were upsetting the balance and it was all he could do to assure them and assert his own power at the same time. It was done rapidly and had not been easy. He needed to quell the fighting. He needed to be in two places at once.
"Your Highness, a message came for you from Suki." On ji joined him and handed him a rolled up scroll, still sealed.
It amused him that this girl the gang had picked up along the way still insisted on using formalities when the rest of them were so casual. He was grateful for the casual. He sat on the curved and cushioned bench, broke the seal and read it, blurting obscenities when he was through.
"Are they okay?"
"For now. I hope."
"May I ask what it says, your highness?"
Zuko absently handed it to her and let her read it.
"We are in a fishing village Katara knows about. In a few days we will start on our way to the Capital City. We will stop and help anyone we can along the way.
Zuko, both Katara and Mai are well. The baby is well. I know this is big news to be reading on parchment, but your mother has been found and is with us. They all send their love.
Sokka, I send my love as well. I don't know what to expect, but if they can be spared, please send Oma and Koko. They should make good time on mongoose dragon."
The rest was a description about where they were. Zuko palmed his forehead and leaned his elbows on his knees. His mother? Could it be? How had they found her? Ozai still refused to say a word on her whereabouts.
On ji closed up the scroll, sympathy on her face. "It must be hard having such a complicated relationship."
"Complicated is a good word for it."
"We've established a plan with the nobles and we are finally packed and ready to take ambassadors to the Earth Kingdom."
Zuko nodded. "I have my honor and my country back. Now I just want my family to come home."
On ji put a hand on his arm and he looked at her. Her eyes were big and sympathetic. She leaned forward and kissed him lightly. She smelled like the orange blossoms in the court yard and her lips were warm. Her hand caressed his face, touched his scar. It surprised him again that the scar didn't repel feminine attention, even this girl who was clearly too young for him.
She fell back to her heels and her eyes were liquid, her lips parted.
Zuko cleared his throat. "You'll start another hundred year war if you keep doing things like that. Aang will kill us all himself, if Katara and Mai don't do it first."
On ji put a hand to her lips and her cheeks reddened. Aang had been paying more attention to his school friend lately and he didn't want anything coming between them. He knew how much it hurt Aang to lose Katara, but Zuko knew he would draw plenty of this kind of attention when he got a little older.
"I'm going to reply to Suki." He pulled the scroll out of her limp hand and turned to go.
"My Lord," On ji whispered. "I'm sorry. You just looked like you needed something. I didn't know what to do. I forgot myself."
"It's okay. It's been a hard few weeks," he said and left. He made a mental note never to be alone with On ji again.

Katara made sure the few things she had were packed for the next morning. Their small group had almost doubled in size that evening. Suki had sent word to the palace requesting that two Kyoshi warriors be sent to the fishing village to accompany them. Oma and Koko had arrived on a mongoose dragon, but they were accompanied by two more mongoose dragons bearing two Sea Ravens and two water benders from the Northern Water Tribe by order of the Fire Lord.
News of the Sea Ravens' loyalty to the new Fire Lord was widely spread, and as the most trusted Fire Nation Soldiers they had been promoted to royal security. Lao and Tzu seemed genuinely honored to be bodyguards for the Fire Lord's wives.
The water benders, Ninni and Uma, were volunteers sent by Yugoda to assist with the pregnancy and delivery of Katara's baby. Katara remembered her healing teacher from the Northern Water Tribe fondly and was amazed that the woman thought enough of her to send them.
From her peripheral vision she noticed Mai leaving the docks. They had talked little, but slept next to each other every night. It was just as Ursa had said, as if they had already made a decision but were trying to find their way to each other. It sounded, and felt, strange.
Mai wound her way to land, then started over the hill where the village wasn't too visible from the water. It was where Katara usually went for privacy. The moon lit the way, but Katara halted when she saw another figure emerge from the trees and hid herself. She relaxed when she realized it was just Ty Lee.
Once again wearing all pink, although her tattoos hidden, she joined Mai by the water. Unsure what to do, Katara stayed put. Mai began undressing for a bath.
"Are you going back to Zuko?" Ty Lee was asking.
Mai stopped for a moment. "What do you mean?"
"I mean nothing has really changed, has it? We defied Azula, we were sold into the Agni-Mizong, we fought together, we survived together, but you're following Katara around and it sounds like the end result is Zuko." Ty Lee kneeled beside Mai at the water's edge.
"I'm not sure what you want me to say. You know Zuko and I were never enemies. We were in everything together," Mai said removing her crown and letting down her hair.
"I know, but doesn't our experience change anything?"
Mai looked at Ty lee curiously. "What do you want to change?"
"I want," Ty lee said and leaned forward. "This." And she kissed Mai. It wasn't exuberate or passionate. It was just a kiss, but it was personal and Mai let it happen.
Katara watched in stunned surprise. It never occurred to her that Ty lee had these kind of feelings for Mai, but why not? She had submitted to Mai because they were both bound by Zuko. That didn't mean Mai felt the bond. She raised her hand to her throat and felt something like...betrayal.
Mai held still until the other girl ended the kiss. "It isn't going to happen, is it?" Ty lee said softly. A tear fell down her cheek.
"I'm sorry Ty Lee. You're my friend. I love you. Oddly, I would even risk my life for you, but…"
"But I'm not Katara or Zuko," she finished.
Katara swallowed and blinked.
Mai nodded and faced the water.
Ty Lee angrily wiped her eyes. "Katara's pregnant, Zuko is Fire Lord. What if they don't need you?"
Katara could only see the back of Mai's head, but whatever Ty Lee saw on her face made her own expression crumble. It dawned on her that Mai was just as confused about their three way relationship as she was. It was something she hadn't considered.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it." Ty Lee hugged Mai tightly. She squeezed Mai again, then stood. "I hope you can find happiness with them. Your life is never going to be easy."
Ty lee passed within touching distance and stopped. Still looking off in the direction she was headed she said, "You win." Then continued walking.
Sadness and embarrassment washed over her. Apparently pregnant women in red tents do not blend in well with trees and she didn't like that Ty Lee knew her rejection had been witnessed.
"You can come out now," Mai called without turning around.
She stepped out of the brush to the water's edge. Mai continued to undress, folding her clothes in a neat pile. Katara tried not to stare. Of course she had seen Mai nude before, and had in fact touched her, tasted her. The thought sent heat up from her groin, and she undressed too to cover her awkwardness.
Mai lowered herself into the water, her back still turned to her. Quickly Katara eased herself into the water as well to cover her pregnancy, unsure how Mai felt about it. They said nothing, both of them pretending to bathe alone. Katara knew it was silly, but didn't know how to break the spell. She watched Mai try to rinse the soap from her hair and without thinking she pulled the water up with one hand and used it to help her. She let her fingers trail through Mai's long, dark hair and then, deliberately taking liberty, traced the intricate black lines webbed across her back.
Mai reached for and held onto her wrist, turning at last to face her with water shining off her pale body, her eye lids heavy, and her cheeks flushed. Katara's breath caught and Mai rubbed circles on her wrist with her thumb, gently pulling her closer. "Katara," she whispered. "Do you feel anything for me?"
"Of course," Katara said, guarded. "There's no reason to feel insecure."
"Really?" Mai cocked her head, and something like anger clouded her eyes. She filled Katara's personal space and beneath the water her hand ran over Katara's belly, then possessively over her hip, angling herself so that there was no pressure against her stomach. Her other hand released Katara's wrist and dug her fingers into her hair to immobilize her head, something she noted as Mai's favorite thing to do, and kissed her savagely.
Her mouth was hard and warm, her tongue demanding, and Katara welcomed it.
Lust seized her, familiar and unsettling. Mai was angry, but Katara didn't mind if she took it out on her like this. Mai's hand ran from her hip to her breast, letting the newly developed weight rest in her hand before pinching the nipple lightly between her fingers. These days it didn't take much pressure to cause the pleasure-pain, and Katara moaned beneath Mai's punishing kiss.
Mai jerked back, but kept her fist tight in Katara's hair. Katara froze, startled. Mai caught her breath. "If it didn’t so obviously arouse you I would think you let us do this to manipulate us. I even believe it hasn't occurred to you to be frightened or to fight back. You honestly trust me that much?"
Was this what Mai needed? Trust? Katara said nothing but relaxed into Mai's hold on her, letting her see how willing she was.
"Damn," Mai hissed and kissed her again, kneading her breast firmly until Katara shuttered. Again she broke the kiss and led Katara to the bank. Katara hesitated, placing a hand over her belly. She saw the gesture register in Mai's eyes, and feared she would misread it, but she said, "It's okay."
Sitting on the bank, Mai knelt kissed her once before guiding Katara's mouth to her breast. Katara sucked the pink nipple into her mouth and swirled her tongue around it, placing a hand on the other woman's thigh to steady herself in the water. She felt Mai's fist tighten in her hair and knew she'd bitten a little too hard. She softened her stroke in response, soothing it with her tongue, and caressing the other with her free hand.
Mai's body was slightly different than she remembered. She seemed fuller, more firm, maybe heavier. Maybe fighting in the pit had hardened her physically as well as mentally. Maybe she was just more real than her memory. Hair had grown between her thighs, and wanting to know what it felt like Katara let her fingers trail down to it. The black curls were silky and moist from the lake.
She felt Mai relax. She spread her thighs to give Katara access. Mai pulled out of the kiss and looked down at her, the anger replaced by desire. She covered Katara's wandering hand with her own and showed her what she wanted, her fingers sliding easily into the slick crevice, already squeezing their target between them.
Mai's lips parted, her breath reaching Katara's cheek. Pulling her hand away, Katara gently touched Mai's hip and looked up at her, silently asking her to rise to her knees. She complied and Katara buried her face in those curls and slid her tongue erotically between the other woman's nether lips to capture and suck on the flesh beneath. Mai's familiar scent and flavor filled her senses and she moaned, feeling her own body react to the intimate contact.
Mai twisted the fist-full of hair as she exploded under Katara's mouth and groaned, finally unable to hold it in. Katara felt Mai's muscles clench against the spasms and her hips shook, but she didn't resist so she continued drinking in the other woman's juices, welcoming the force Mai applied to her hair. Mai's body finally relaxed and Katara let her breathe while she kissed and licked at the juices running down her thighs, her efforts punctuated by soft licking and sucking noises.
Dropping back down, Mai tilted Katara' s head and licked the moisture from her lips before covering her mouth again and guiding her out of the water and coaxing her to the bank beside her. Katara's hands instinctively cupped her growing belly to protect it. Mai stared down at her while she caressed her bare legs, stroked the hair between her thighs, touched her tender breasts. Katara arched as much as she could into her touch. Mai even let her hand roam over her belly, her expression still hazy from orgasm.
"You're going to have a boy," Mai said as if just speaking her thoughts aloud.
"We're going to have a boy," Katara corrected. "The three of us made him."
Mai stared at her, considering this. On hands and knees, Mai parted Katara's thighs with her knee and settled herself between her legs, pushing them wide apart. Katara let her head roll to the side and closed her eyes as she felt Mai's fingers spread her labia taught. She bucked and gasped at the sharp stab of pleasure as Mai ran her tongue roughly over her already engorged flesh.
She felt her legs being pushed further apart, Mai's tongue inside her as far as it could go. Katara touched her own breast, squeezing and pulling her own nipples to match Mai's rhythm. She felt the thrust of Mai's fingers inside her and she held her breath to keep from making too much noise. The penetration was exquisite and she whispered her name.
The pleasure was too much. She felt the pressure rise up her throat and she tried to move away, but Mai had locked her arms under her thighs, her hands resting below her stomach to keep her from moving. "Mai," she bit out but it was too late. She threw her head back and screamed to release the pent up pressure, her body sating itself under Mai's mouth and fingers.
Finally Mai released her, sitting up and sucking the flavor from her fingers. Katara couldn't move, but Mai laid beside her and pressed her lips to hers, and that was how Suki and Ty lee found them.
"Oops," Suki said lightly. "Not the kind of scream we thought we heard."
Katara's first though was to bolt up and cover herself, but she was still recovering. Mai didn't glance up, but kissed Katara's lips again while the sound of retreating footsteps faded. She felt sorry for Ty Lee, who would be feeling her rejection all the more painfully.
Letting Mai touch her, sharing her afterglow, Katara wondered if she had wanted someone to see them. It didn't matter, she thought. She knew too well what it felt like to be unsure of your place in a relationship. Whatever Mai needed to do to feel like she belonged, Katara decided she would allow it.
