Late Night Home – Chapter 18
Three days. Three days since Bonnie had moved in, and Kim knew that she finally had to say something. The looks Bonnie were giving to Ron when he wasn't watching had become more frequent. Granted, they had never spent this much time with Bonnie before, but now that they were living together, Kim could see them all the time. It was the adoring gaze of someone in love.
But despite the looks, like Tara had said, Bonnie never made a single move to initiate anything with Ron. She was pleasant, she was nice, she was a friend. If Kim didn't keep seeing those looks, she'd never have thought anything.
And Ron, bless his heart, was completely oblivious. In the bedroom, at a party, Ron had this uncanny perception of just what a woman wanted and needed. But get him out of that situation, in any other setting, and Ron wouldn't notice a thing. Hell, Kim figured she could put him in a ballroom with a hundred women that all wanted a piece of him and he wouldn't have realized it if his life depended on it. It was just one of those little quirks that she loved so much about him. But Kim's mind was wandering, so she brought it back to the problem at hand.
The trip to the school had been hard. Poor little Veronica's face, when she heard what had happened, had been so heart-breaking. Michelle and James' reactions were almost as bad. After a bit of time consoling them, the group made the drive to get them some replacement clothes and essentials to tide them over until the insurance was paid. Bonnie had been so out of it helping her daughter out that she hadn't even really noticed that they were getting all the clothes from Smarty Mart.
It hadn't taken long for all of them to get settled in. The girls had gone to bed almost right away, drained from the day. Bonnie had stayed up, working the phones and settling things, even though Kim had volunteered to do that. But Bonnie refused, wanting to handle everything herself to make sure she and Veronica were going to be all right.
The next day, Bonnie had helped with breakfast, gotten her daughter off to school, and headed into work, all with a smile. At first it had concerned Kim, but after talking to Tara, she knew that it was how Bonnie was dealing with the situation. She had grieved, but she wasn't going to let it beat her down. A couple years earlier, it might have broken her spirit after everything she had been through, but not now. It was actually refreshing to see a bit of the Bonnie she thought she knew in high school.
In just three days, the household was running as if Bonnie and Veronica had lived there their whole lives. Veronica, Michelle, and James were playing and laughing like nothing had happened, while Bonnie would bounce around the kitchen, helping Ron prepare meals, or working out with Kim during her morning run, even doing a little sparring. It was nice, it was comfortable.
If only Kim didn't keep seeing those looks.
She hadn't told Ron about the looks before, but she knew she'd have to. They had to talk to Bonnie and do it in a way that wouldn't hurt her. It was something that had to be done.
“Ron?”
“Yeah KP?” Ron looked up from his video game to meet her eyes. As soon as he did, he dropped the controller and turned off the game. “What's the matter KP? Did I do something? Did I forget something? Did I leave the toilet seat up? I swear, I thought I put it down before I went to work.”
“RON!” Kim moved quickly to her husband, silencing him before his ranting could get louder. She looked to see if the office door would open, where she knew Bonnie was working, but the lawyer apparently didn't hear them. “Ron, you didn't do anything wrong.”
“I didn't?” The relief in his voice was palpable.
“No Ron.” Kim smiled briefly at his reaction, but it disappeared fast. She sat back down beside him, holding his hands in hers. “Ron, have you noticed anything... strange... about the way...”
“The looks?”
Kim was flabbergasted. “You saw them too?”
Ron nodded quickly. “Oh yeah, they'd be hard to miss. Even I'm not that clueless.”
“And you didn't say anything to me?”
Ron shook his head. “I didn't think it would be a big deal. I talked to Tara and she told me Bonnie wasn't going to do anything about it, and I figured if you had a problem with it, you would say something.”
Kim chuckled softly, as her husband had surprised her once again. “Well, it has started to bother me a little bit since she started staying with us, but I just think we should talk about it with her. I used to only notice it in the bedroom, but lately... I just think we should get everything out in the open so that we can deal with it.”
Ron pondered that for a moment, running everything through his head. Most people first meeting Ron thought he wasn't smart, but when he thought out a decision rather than just acting on his first impulsive thought, he was amazingly insightful. “You're right KP, we should talk to her. When do you want to do this?”
“I think we should do it tonight. The kids are all in bed, and it's Friday night. That should give us plenty of time to talk through this. Why don't you get some coffee started while I go get Bonnie.”
“Sure thing KP.”
He kissed her softly and then rose to his feet. Kim watched him head to the kitchen, and then made her way to the office. Kim opened the door softly, peeking in. Bonnie was hard at work on the computer, her tongue sticking out just a bit from the side of her mouth as she concentrated on the screen. Waiting until she paused a moment, Kim moved into the room. “Hey Bonnie, how's it going?”
Bonnie groaned, sitting back in the chair. “Oh, this case is just annoying. The guy's lawyer is a slimy little worm but he's a smart slimy worm. I'm just going over all the evidence again.”
Kim nodded, feeling a little uncomfortable. “Think you can take a break for a bit?”
Bonnie finally looked up. “Sure Kim, I... what's wrong?”Bonnie was initially smiling but when she saw Kim's expression, that smile disappeared quickly.
Kim moved quickly to dispel her fears. “I don't think it will be too bad. No matter what happens, you can still stay here as long as you need.”
“I knew it, I did something, didn't I? I'm so sorry, if I did something, I didn't mean to.”
Kim couldn't help but laugh. Bonnie had sounded almost like Ron had only a couple minutes before in that moment. “No Bonnie, you didn't do anything wrong. We just... need to talk about a few things together. All right?”
Bonnie nodded, but she still seemed a bit pensive. “Sure, no problem.”
The two women headed out to the living room, where Ron had just finished bringing out the coffee, as well as a few cookies on a plate. That actually seemed to disturb Bonnie even more. “Now I know I did something wrong. No one brings cookies to a discussion without something being wrong.”
“Nothing is wrong Bonnie.” Kim pulled the worried woman onto the couch. Kim sat between her husband and Bonnie, reaching out to take Bonnie's hands. “Now, one of the things I've learned from Tara is that we shouldn't keep our feelings bottled up, that we should discuss everything calmly and rationally.” Kim sighed, letting out a slow breath. “Bonnie, we want to talk about the looks.”
Bonnie eyes went wide with panic. “Looks? I don't... I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Bonnie, it's all right, we're not mad or anything.” Kim was quick to try and relieve her fears. “We just need to talk about it, okay?”
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean... I know the two of you...”
“Bonnie, it's all right. People can't help how they feel. We've both talked to Tara...”
That woke Bonnie up like a bucket of ice water, a look of betrayal on her face. “You talked to Tara?”
“She didn't say anything, I promise. She just reassured us that you would never interfere in our relationship.” Kim patted her hands, calming her down. “Bonnie, we are not mad at all. We're just a bit concerned for you in all this.”
Ron took this opportunity to jump in. “Bonnie, we are your friends, and that won't change. We also don't want to hurt your feelings at all, as much as we can help it. If we can discuss how you're feeling, get everything out in the open, than we can work on it together. The way you're feeling isn't wrong, we just want to understand the looks you've been giving Kim.”
“He's right Bonnie, the way you're feeling isn't wrong at...” Something Ron said clicked in her head and Kim whirled to face her husband. “Wait, what was that? The looks Bonnie has been giving ME?”
Ron looked a bit uncertain and confused. “Uhhh... isn't this what we've been talking about? The loving looks she's been giving you for months?”
“I was talking about the loving looks she's been giving YOU for months!”
The couple stared at each other incredulous for a few moments before turning back to Bonnie. The young woman seemed to sink into the couch a bit, looking ashamed. “It's... it's both.”
Ron and Kim shared a look with each other, one of shock. “BOTH?”
Bonnie took in their shocked expressions and bolted to her feet. “Look, I don't want to cause any problems. Veronica and I can just go to a hotel and...”
Kim reached out quickly, grabbing Bonnie's arm and pulling her back down to the couch. “No, just... just wait a second. I think you just took us both off-guard there.” Kim breathed deeply, letting it out slowly. “Okay, so... you have feelings... for both of us?”
Bonnie hung her head, her eyes closed. When she responded, it was barely a whisper. “Yes.”
Ron still seemed to be in a state of shock. “Really?”
Bonnie nodded quickly. “Yes.”
Ron's mouth hung open for a moment, trying to process. “Really really?”
Bonnie's head shot up sharply. “YES! I have feelings for both of you, all right. I love you guys. I didn't plan to, I didn't want to, but I do. I love you both!”
Kim glared sharply at her husband for a moment then turned her attention back to Bonnie, wrapping her arm around the young woman, who looked almost ready to cry. “Bonnie, it's all right. We're not mad, we're just a bit shocked at the moment. Could you... could you tell us how this happened? When it happened?”
Bonnie just shook her head, tears threatening to break free. “I don't know. I just... I didn't even really want to be with you guys after Brick but Tara... the guys I was seeing after... but you guys were just so... and I just...” Bonnie just couldn't continue as she started crying, and Kim pulled her into a hug, consoling her. After a few moments, Bonnie regained control, though breathing harshly. “I just... I never wanted you guys to find out. I know how much you love each other, and when you told me everything you had been through... I wanted the feelings to go away but...”
Bonnie broke down again and Kim hugged her tightly, rocking her back and forth and whispering to her softly. She felt Ron move, felt his arms wrap around Bonnie from the other side, and Kim felt comforted at the contact as well. This night had definitely not gone like she had planned.
For half an hour, the trio held each other, until Kim heard Bonnie calm, even breathing, indicating she had gone to sleep. Kim looked up to meet Ron's gaze and saw the trace of tears on his face. She smiled at him, saw him return it, and then Kim slowly pulled away. “Ron, can you put Bonnie to bed. I need to do something.”
Ron shifted his arms around Bonnie, moving so that he could pick her up without disturbing her. “Where are you going?”
“Getting some more answers.”
Seeing Kim wasn't going to add more, Ron scooped up the sleeping Bonnie, holding her tight in his arms. Kim saw the way her head tucked up against his shoulder, and could see the small smile gracing her face, as though, even asleep, she knew whose arms she was in. Kim searched inside herself for what she was feeling. She was anticipating jealousy or anger. Instead, what she found was... a sense of rightness. Not knowing what else to do, Kim headed out of the house, knowing just who she had to talk to.
------------------------------------------------------------
Tara wrapped her robe around herself as she headed for the door. The knocking had been very insistent, and she wondered just who it could be. There were several possibilities, and she hoped it wasn't one of the bad ones. When she opened the door and found Kim, she wasn't all that surprised.
“You knew.”
It was a simple statement, but it conveyed all Tara needed to know about why Kim was standing on her doorstep at ten thirty at night. “Yes, I did.”
“And you couldn't tell me that it wasn't just Ron she was in love with?”
Tara sighed, waiting for Kim to enter. When her friend did, she closed the door and started. “It wasn't my place to tell you that.”
“You could have at least given me some kind of warning.” Kim paced the entryway, clearly agitated. “Is this was you were so unsure about Bonnie staying with us?”
“Yes, it was, but it was more for Bonnie's sake than anything else. She does love you, both of you, and I was afraid that she might be hurt being so close to both of you and not being able to deal with it.”
Kim looked hurt at that statement. “You know Ron and I would never intentionally hurt Bonnie.”
Tara nodded softly. “I know that, but sometimes it's the accidental hurts, the ones you don't mean to do, that hurt the most.”
Kim slumped against the wall, pressing one hand against her forehead as if to stall a headache. “What do we do now?”
“Why don't you tell me what happened tonight?”
Kim told Tara everything that had happened, in as much detail as she could. Tara listened attentively, looking at every piece of information. When Kim was done, Tara took a moment to think it over. “Kim... you've told me a lot of details, but there is one thing you left out. How do you feel?”
Kim just looked confused. “How do I feel?”
“Yes, how do you feel? How do you feel about Bonnie? How does Ron feel about Bonnie. You're looking at this clinically when you should be looking at this emotionally as well. You can't deal with the situation until you know how you feel about the situation. You've got a lot of information, but you haven't had time to process it all. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?”
Kim froze for a moment, her mind swirling. “I... think so.”
Tara gently put her hand on Kim's shoulder, smiling reassuringly. “Here's what I want you to do then. I want you to go home and talk with Ron about how you both feel about this. Work out how you feel about everything, and in the morning you'll have a clearer picture of what you want to do. All right?” Kim nodded numbly, uncertainty etched in her features. “All right then. If you want, I'll come by tomorrow and talk with all three of you if you want. Just give me a call, okay?”
Kim nodded, and quickly left. It was obvious that she had a lot on her mind, and so did Tara as well. When she had started Bonnie's therapy, she never in a million years would have imagined that this scenario would have been possible. She just hoped that everything would work out in the end for all her friends.
