Darcy sat waiting anxiously in the waiting room of the healing center. She kept clenching and unclenching her fists around a bunched up fold of her robe, trying not to let panic overwhelm her. She looked up at the sudden flurry of activity as Stormy was floated in on a stretcher, surrounded by four healers in light blue robes and Dr. Shreever in his midnight blue robe. She was appalled at how pale Stormy looked. She jumped up and ran over to Icy who was following along behind them as they hurried past her into the E.R. The two witches took in the anxiety written on each other's face and embraced without thinking about it. They separated a moment later, still holding on to each other's arms. Darcy's gaze locked with Icy's as they stood there looking at each other worriedly.
"Oh my god Icy, what happened? I had just arrived at Dr. Shreever's office when your call came in. He sent me straight over here to wait. I tried asking what's happened but nobody here has a clue."
Icy's grip on Darcy's arms tightened, like she was clinging to her last lifeline.
"It was awful Darcy. I can't believe she was so stupid! I tried to make her stop but she wouldn't listen ..."
Darcy took hold of Icy's shoulders and shook her slightly.
"Icy, calm down! Just tell me what happened."
Icy swallowed and took a couple of deep breaths.
"I ... I went over to talk to her, after you left, to try to break her out of that funk she was in. We argued. She got really upset. She ... she just completely lost it. She started banging her head on that rock over and over again until she broke her headband. Then she passed out. There was blood all over her forehead and her eyes were rolled back and I couldn't wake her up."
Dr. Shreever, who had stopped outside the door to the E.R., came over to place a hand on each girl's shoulder.
"Don't worry girls. It'll be alright. Our medical wizards here at Light Haven are top notch. They'll have Stormy back on her feet in no time."
He gestured toward the seats along one wall where Darcy had been sitting moments ago.
"In the meantime why don't we have a seat and discuss what happened?"
Both girls nodded numbly. The three of them sat down with Shreever on the right and Icy in the middle. Darcy took Icy's hand and looked her in the eye.
"How did this happen? I know Stormy was mad at us when I left but she was just sulking. What made her do this?"
Icy met Darcy's gaze for a moment, then looked down at her lap.
"I don't know. I was just talking to her and she went nuts on me. She started raving about how we never listen to her and are always putting her down. She tried to use her magic on me, and when that didn't work she started bashing her head against the rock trying to get her headband off."
Dr. Shreever reached into the sleeve of his robe and pulled out the shattered remnants of Stormy's magic suppression headband.
"Evidently she succeeded, but at a rather high price."
Icy glanced at the pieces in Shreever's hand and nodded glumly.
"Stormy's never been big on self-control but I never thought she'd go and do something so self-destructive."
Dr. Shreever gripped the fragments tightly in his hand and hung his head.
"This is all my fault. I'm the one who was talking to her about how she doesn't get any respect from the two of you. I planted the seed in her mind, little realizing how it would take root. I should have been more careful. I should have stopped to consider how shattered her psyche must be. I just never dreamed she'd take things this far."
Icy gave Shreever a cold, hard stare.
"You did this!?! You were trying to turn Stormy against us, weren't you?! You wanted to turn us all against each other, break us up so we'd be easier for you to control!!!"
Dr. Shreever looked up at Icy, appalled.
"No, no of course not! I was only giving her some much-needed incentive to work on her anger issues, that's all."
Icy narrowed her eyes dangerously.
"Yeah, sure. And we can all see how well THAT worked out."
Dr. Shreever raised his hand toward her beseechingly.
"Icy I swear to you, I never meant for anything like this to happen."
Icy smacked his hand aside.
"Keep your damn hands to yourself bastard! Don't you fucking DARE touch me again!"
Darcy laid her hand on Icy's shoulder.
"Lay off him Icy. Don't go laying all this on him. Remember, you're the one who tricked that guard into spying on Stormy while she was bathing. This is as much your fault as his."
Icy whipped her head around to glare at her.
"Hey! You laughed as hard as I did over that one!"
Darcy scowled right back at her.
"Maybe, but I wasn't the one who made it happen. I tried to stop it you know."
Icy splayed her hand over her chest dramatically.
"Oh! So this is all my fault, huh? Just whose side are you on anyway?"
Darcy folded her arms and leaned back in her seat.
"Right now? Stormy's."
Dr. Shreever laid his hand on Icy's shoulder.
"Ladies! Ladies! This is no time to be fighting amongst ourselves! Stormy needs our support right now."
Icy whipped around to glare at Shreever, her lips peeled back in a vicious snarl.
"Fuck off Shreever! Stormy needs US right now, not YOU! You've done enough damage for one day!"
Just then the chief healer came out of the doors leading to the short hallway to the E.R.
"Good news. The patient is awake and she's asking to see all of you."
Darcy bolted up out of her seat and dashed over to healer, the others only a step or two behind.
"How is she? Is she going to be alright?"
The healer laid a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"She's going to be fine, but she's been through a serious trauma and she needs her rest, so I can only allow you a brief visit. Also, I must ask that you all refrain from doing anything which might get her excited or upset. If you will follow me please?"
As they followed the healer down a side hall to the Recovery Room Dr. Shreever fell in beside him.
"How serious were her injuries?"
The healer glanced at him.
"She had a mild concussion and lacerations on her forehead, but there were no signs of skull fracture. That in itself is pretty lucky, as it means there weren't any bone shards potentially lodged in her brain tissue. We ran a full probe, just to be sure."
He stopped in front of the door to the Recovery Room and turned to face them.
"Her case was complicated by having received numerous unskilled healing treatments in the past. This has left a lot of sub-dermal scar tissue which makes proper healing much more problematic, but she's strong and stubbornly resilient. We're going to have to keep her here overnight for observation, but I feel confident that she's going to make a full recovery."
Darcy gave a sigh of relief. Icy looked greatly relieved herself.
"Thank evil for that."
The healer looked at Icy strangely.
"Um, right. Well anyway, as I said she needs her rest, so keep it short and try not to aggravate her."
Icy smirked at him.
"I'm not sure if that's even possible. After all, this is Stormy we're talking about, but we'll do our best."
The healer opened the door and let them in. Stormy was lying in a hospital bed wearing a tissue-thin green hospital robe. A glowing green band encircled each of her wrists. Her forehead was swathed in bandages. Her face was still paler than usual but the color was starting to return to her cheeks. She was lying there with a bemused expression on her face, but when she saw her sister witches walking in the door her face lit up with a weak smile.
"Hey you guys. I'm glad you came."
Darcy came over and clasped her right hand.
"Are you alright Stormy? How are you feeling?"
Stormy looked at her and shrugged.
"Kinda weak and my head feels weird, but okay I guess."
Icy came around to take her left hand.
"You idiot. You nearly gave me a heart attack. Don't you ever scare me like that again."
Stormy stared at her blankly.
"Why? What'd I do?"
Icy looked at her in stunned surprise.
"Are you telling me you don't remember? How could you not remember that?"
Stormy shook her head and winced.
"Sorry, but I really haven't got a clue. Everything's all fuzzy. I remember waking up this morning feeling really mad at you guys for some reason but I'm not sure why. After you left to go see Dr. Shreever I went down to the lake to think and that's about all I remember. Next thing I know I woke up in this place surrounded by guys in sissy blue robes."
The chief healer stepped into the room and walked over to the foot of the bed.
"The trauma you have suffered to your head appears to have caused partial amnesia."
Darcy looked at him in confusion.
"Amnesia? Isn't that when you can't remember who you are?"
The healer turned to her and shook his head.
"Not exactly. Amnesia is where the victim loses part or all of their memory. Total amnesia can indeed cause one to forget who they are, but partial amnesia is more limited and can result in the loss of only a portion of one's memories. Apparently in this case that would include certain recent stressful memories and all memory of the minutes immediately preceding and leading up to the accident."
He turned back to Stormy.
"You may find that parts of your missing memory will return on their own over time, but the events surrounding the trauma itself may or may not ever fully return."
Stormy looked at the healer blankly, then looked around at the others.
"So what exactly did happen? Did I hit my head or something?"
Icy nodded solemnly.
"You hit your head alright. Over and over again. You were bashing your head on a boulder trying to get your headband off."
Stormy gave Icy a surprised look.
"I was? That sure explains a few things. Did it work?"
Dr. Shreever held out the pieces in his hand.
"See for yourself."
Stormy grinned triumphantly when she saw the shattered remnants of her former headband.
"Well whaddaya know?"
Darcy smacked her in the shoulder.
"Idiot! You gave yourself a concussion doing that! Don't you realize you had us all worried sick about you?"
Stormy frowned uncertainly.
"Gosh, I didn't know you guys cared."
Icy frowned at her.
"Of course we care. You're one of us. We wouldn't be the Trix anymore if we lost you."
Then her frown turned into a grin.
"You're lucky you've got such a hard head. You think you got bashed up good, you should see the boulder."
Stormy's eyes went wide.
"No way! You're kidding me! I actually broke a boulder with my head?"
Icy gave Stormy a playful mock punch in the shoulder.
"Yeah, I am kidding you. The boulder isn't even scratched, though there's probably a big blood spot on it where you tried. I didn't exactly stop and check."
Stormy pulled a face and stuck out her tongue at Icy. The next instant she squeezed her eyes shut, gritted her teeth and drove her head back into her pillow as pain lanced through her head.
"Aaaaahhh!!"
Both Icy and Darcy called out "Stormy!" at the same time. The healer quickly thrust Icy aside to spread his hands across Stormy's forehead, calling up a nimbus of blue healing magic.
"Sssshhh... Relax Stormy. It's going to be alright. Just relax and stay calm."
Within seconds Stormy was able to relax and lie in a more natural pose. When the healer pulled his hands away Stormy opened her eyes. She wore a dazed expression and her eyes seemed to be having trouble staying focused.
"Hey guysh. You all look like fishies... I'm feelin' kinda shleepy now. I shink I'ma take a napp."
Darcy patted Stormy's hand concernedly.
"Okay Stormy. You rest now. We'll see you later."
Stormy raised her other hand and waved bye-bye as the healer ushered them out of the room and closed the door behind them. Icy rounded upon him immediately.
"Okay, just what the hell was that? She was fine until you used your magic on her, then she started acting all spaced out. What gives with that?"
The healer sighed.
"The use of healing magic on the brain is not an exact science. As you witnessed, healing magic can have some strange side-effects when used in the vicinity of the brain or eyes. To minimize the risk of long term side-effects we have to administer treatments at well spaced intervals. This last treatment had to be administered a bit sooner than we would have liked in order to alleviate her pain. The best thing for her right now is to rest as much as possible. With careful supervision she'll be just fine. She may even be back to normal as early as tomorrow."
Icy folded her arms and gave the healer a deadly serious scowl.
"She better be. I know right where to start looking for you if she isn't."
Darcy jerked her thumb toward the door of the Recovery Room.
"What was with those wristbands? They've got the same green glow as our headbands."
The healer nodded.
"We obviously can not allow your sister the use of her magic, just as we can't allow either of you the use of yours, but with her head injury it is not a good idea for her to be wearing a headband at this time, so we outfitted her with those bracelets instead. They prevent her from being able to wield her magic, but unlike the headbands they do not prevent her from regenerating her magical power, which is a good thing for someone recovering from an injury. Having her own magic circulating within her body will help accelerate the healing process. Once she is sufficiently recovered she will be outfitted with a new headband and given a stern warning against attempting such a foolhardy stunt again."
Icy gave a shaky laugh.
"Ha. Like that'll do any good. Stormy doesn't take warnings from anybody."
Darcy sniffed and nodded.
"Yeah. Might as well tell the wind not to blow. She'll just go right ahead and do whatever she wants anyway."
Dr. Shreever put an arm around each girl's shoulders.
"Ladies, let us go back to my office. I think we have things to discuss."
Turning them all around, he led the two girls back out to the waiting room and out into the main corridor where the waiting guards fell into step behind them. He smiled when both girls leaned their heads against his chest seeking comfort. This promised to be a very productive session.
