Ghostbusters Central – Mid-afternoon . . .
Alice had arrived after one in the morning, and Winston and Ray picked her up frhe ahe airport. It was too late to get started on planning so Eddie offered her his room at the Waldorf, and he bunked with Jake. The three returned to the firehouse by cab very early the next morning.
Jake sat quietly in a corner, not speaking again, not even seeming to be listening, just fiddling with his wedding band. He looked utterly defeated and Peter made sure to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn’t snap. Egon, who was sitting next to Janine, had placed a protective arm about her shoulders. He wouldn’t admit it, but he had an unrealistic fear that whatever took Jessica would be back for Janine. She’d been hurt pretty badly during their recent fight with Gozer’s terror dogs, and Egon hadn’t really gotten over that. Ray sat by Alice, looking almost as possessive as Egon. Winston smiled a little, wondering if they haookeooked up’ as Janine had suggested to him in confidence.
“Thanks for coming so quickly, Alice,” Ray said vehemently. “We really need your input on this. I mean, we’re at a loss. Cthulhu is supposed to be resting for at least another 57 years yet, right?”
“Not necessarily, Ray. Cthulhu sleeps imprisoned until he is summoned, but the astral alignment is not the only ritual that may free him. In truth, it’s just the most renowned. The true means of freeing Cthulhu lies in the shape of the stars during the alignment. They form a symbol that is a graphic representation of Cthulhu’s prison home in R’lyeh. This symbol is called the Annulus of R’lyeh: a circle with an isosceles triangle inside, to represent the pyramid that stands at the center of the round island R’lyeh. Without this symbol, Cthulhu must wait for the proper astral alignment, but if a replacement Annulus is found, he could enter our world any year during early spring.”
Peter tried unsuccessfully to pronounce R’lyeh. Egon corrected him, and then effortlessly appended, “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.”
Peter gasped. “Watch your mouth, Spengs! There are ladies present!” Egon rolled his eyes, but smiled slightly at his friend’s good-natured ribbing.
“In his house at R’lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming,” Ray translated the phrase for the others. “It’s also the school motto at Miskatonic University. Kinda morbid, but definitely fitting. Maybe some of Miskatonic’s students are behind this.”
Winston nodded thoughtfully. “That still doesn’t explain why they took Jessica.”
Alice looked at them all. None of them appeared to understand, not even Egon. Sadly she explained, “Don’t you see? She is the Annulus of R’lyeh, a circle with an isosceles triangle inside.
Peter looked puzzled, then asked, “Which one was isosceles again? I slept through my high school geometry class.”
Alice explained, “It’s the one with two identical legs and one discordant leg. Jessica is carrying identical twin girls and a boy who must by definition be from a separate ovum fertilization; they’re the isosceles triangle. The three umbilical cords signify the legs of the triangle connecting the children to the circle, her womb.”
“Of course!” Egon exclaimed. Everyone looked over to Jake to gauge whether he’d react. He was no longer in a daze. Alice’s words were not lost on him at all. He swallowed past the lump in his throat. He knew what he had to ask, but couldn’t quite get his mouth to form the words.
“What will happen to her?” Eddie asked, coming to his friend’s aid.
Alice reluctantly replied. “Jessica and the babies are his portal into our world and the only way to send Cthulhu back once he’s here. He . . . he would want to destroy the portal immediately, so that he could not be sent back. I’m so sorry.”
Janine gasped, bringing her hand to her mouth and welling up with tears again. Everyone looked at Jake. He looked tired and angry. He also looked guilty. He thought about how he knew something wasn’t right and he’d let her come on the bust anyway. If he’d only stopped her . . . she’d have been pissed, but she’d still be safe. ‘I’d give anything to be home with her right now, angry or not. It’s my fault. I should have made us stay home. Dad would’ve understood eventually.’
Peter recognized the evidence of his thoughts in his face. “Don’t do that to yourself, Jake. It won’t do her any good. We’ll find her.” He opened his mouth to say something further then clamped it shut. He had come very close to promising, knowing that he hadn’t been able to keep a similar promise before.
Jake stared at Peter for a long time. “I’ll stop if youp.” p.” His gaze broadened to include everyone else in the room. “All of you. I’m sorry if I made you feel like I blamed you. I really don’t. I just get crazy when it comes to my wife, but I know it wasn’t your fault. This was all very well planned. I can’t do this without you. I just have to believe that we’ll find her.”
“Or die trying,” Egon added. Two pairs of light blue eyes connected, understanding passing silently between them. This was a fight that they most likely would not return from.
Jake sighed in exhaustion. “I want you all to know that I may not be able to stop myself from seriously hurting the people who took my family. Please don’t let me do something stupid. I can’t raise my kids from prison,” he said with a slight smile. His falsely optimistic words served their purpose; everyone’s good humor was revived.
“You got it, man,” Winston’s tone was light, but his face was serious. He had been well trained in ‘Nam. He knew how to stop Jake from hurting anyone, if it came to that.
Peter felt ready to tackle the problem again. “There’s one thing I don’t get, Alice. We can assume that the phony bust was set up to nab Jessie. I mean whoever they are; they went through a lot of trouble. Well, how did they know about the triplets? We all only just found out about the boy a few days ago.”
“I don’t know.”
Janine had a sudden epiphany. “Wait, I know! The nurse!”
“What nurse?” Ray asked.
“The guy! Remember?” They all stared at her blankly after that vague description. “You know! The creepy male nurse? I think his name was Sam.”
Jake perked up. “The one who helped with Jessica’s exam?”
“Yeah! He seemed waaaaay too excited about your news. You woulda thought he was the father! And Jessica said he creeped her out ‘cause he kept staring at her chest!” Jake’s expression soured. “Sorry, Jake. She didn’t want to tell you. She thought you might go looking for the guy and get yourself arrested for assault.”
Peter pondered this for a minute. “You know, Janine’s r. A. Ae woe working in one of the Manhattan hospitals should be pretty indifferent after a while. He wasn’t just excited, he looked almost . . . I dunno.”
“Relieved.” Egon frowned intently. “If the Annulus of R’lyeh can be a pregnant woman carrying dizygotic triplets, it would make sense that a hospital employee who is also a Cthulhu cultist should be looking for such a woman. Not finding her would undoubtedly meet with dire consequences. He was reveling in her sacrifice because it would save his own neck. Disgusting.”
Peter stood, frowning darkly. “I think it’s time to call Frump.” He left the room to make the call.
Inspector Frump held little affection for the Ghostbusters, but he knew that they would only call him if there were a serious problem. He came over immediately.
He listened to their entire story then called in an APB on the male nurse, with specific instructions to check with the obstetrics staff at Columbia to see if anyone there had seen him or knew where to find him. In under ten minutes, a rookie called Frump with a name: Sam Jessup. Jessup had not been to work since the day Jessica was there. A unit was dispatched to his apartment, in case he returned and to see if there was any sign of Jessie Kong.
