Vinz Clortho rapped lightly on the door to the firehouse. He chuckled to himself then ripped the door from its hinges. Zuul entered first, followed closely by her mate, who dragged Kel by the scruff of her shirt. She was unable to get her footing, so he was dragging her on her knees. Winston tensed, gripping his thrower so tightly his fingers were numb. But he kept his cool. He did not react. This surprised the demons, who were unaware of his military ting.ing.
“Hello sub-creatures,” Zuul taunted. She slunk toward them, watching them as a predator watches its intended meal. “We have returned as promised. Give us the child.”
“No.”
“Then we will be forced to kill her.” Vinz lifted Kel to her feet and slid his fingers around her throat, applying light pressure. Winston remained calm, but on the inside he was seething.
“You won’t kill her,” Egon stated matter-of-factly.
“No? Another impasse perhaps? There will be no stalling this time. Give us the child now or she dies. We already have two hostages we can use against you.”
Peter swallowed hard and closed his eyes. They’d figured out that the Ghostbusters would never hurt Dana or Louis. That lost them an edge. He was not a religious man, but he silently prayed that Egon and Alice’s plan would work, because he really didn’t want to fry the woman he loved.
“No impasse, Zuul. But you won’t hurt Kel.”
“Won’t we?” Vinz tightened his grip. Kel gasped briefly until her breath was gone.
“No.” Egon smiled as his trap was sprung. Slimer swooped down from the rafters and doused the two demons with positively charged mood slime. The creatures howled with rage. The little ghost rubbed Vinz’s hands until they were really slimy, making it impossible for him to keep a grip on Kel. She slid away from him and ran toward Winston. Vinz grabbed Slimer’s hand and flung the ghost away. Slimer floated up and out of the way, hovering above the scene below watching as it unfolded.
Kel was halfway to Winston when Vinz noticed her flight to freedom. He leapt into the air. His trajectory would have put him right on top of Kel, but that never happened. As he came within a few feet of grabbing her, he was hit square in the chest with a powerful blast of red energy. He flew across the room and collided solidly with Zuul.
The guys all looked at Janine. She was lounging calmly in her desk chair. Her hand was extended before her, palm out and smoking. She brought her hand to her lips and blew the smoke off her index finger, as if it were a six-shooter. “Well,” she said at their curious stares. “Why do you think they kicked me out of the hospital?”
“Your winning personality?” Peter shouted from behind the file cabinet.
“Sit and spin, Venkman!” Although he couldn’t see her, Peter had no doubt what finger she was holding up in her general direction.
Zuul and Vinz took a moment to recover. In that time, Winston got Kel stowed safely behind the file cabinet with Peter, Pauline and Rosa. “Hello, Peter. Lovely morning, yes?”
“Hey, Kelechi. You all right?”
“I am now.”
Peter nodded to Pauline and Rosa. He began to think of Dana and how happy they had been together and how much he loved her. Pauline thought of how much she missed Louis and how she would do anything for him. Rosa thought of how attached she’d become to Oscar and began to sing his favorite lullaby under her breath.
Zuul helped Vinz to his feet. They could hear Rosa’s singing and so they knew where Oscar was hidden. The two got down on all fours, in a position that showed they were ready to pounce, all pretence of humanity left behind. Ray and Winston each took aim at their assigned terror dog and fired. The beams held the demons for a moment, but they weren’t able to keep them contained. Ray changed his beam to a wider dispersion to try to keep Vinz subdued. It worked for a while, but Vinz still broke free. “Try a wider dispersion next time, Winston!” Ray exclaimed. “I was able to hold him a little longer.”
“You got it, Ray.” Winston made the adjustment, knowing that little bit might soon make all the difference between victory and defeat.
Alice had been chanting her spell from the moment the terror dogs entered the firehouse with Kel. She could feel that the spell was having an effect on them, but she was not able to hold them completely. The slime was helping to control them some, and she could feel Dana and Louis fighting to reach full consciousness. If she could only get her spell to work . . .
Janine watched Alice struggle to make her spell work. She made a decision. She rose and hobbled up behind Alice, wrapping one arm around her waist and the other about her chest and shoulders. Alice flinched a bit, but Janine reassured her. “Just relax, Alice. I’m going to try to help you.”
Janine concentrated on Alice. She allowed her power to build as she did so, and then she released it forward into the other woman. Alice and Janine were engulfed in a ball of red light. The feeling was familiar to Janine by now, but Alice felt like she was going to burst with the pain and ecstasy. “Oh my God!” she shouted. Then the energy from her spell shot forward and enveloped the demons. The spell was a hundred times more powerful than predicted in the literature. Janine must have been a very powerful being now. Perhaps not even human. She hoped so much power would not endanger her friend, or change her for the worse.
Janine could feel Alice’s concerns resounding in her mind and she chuckled. “Don’t worry, Alice. I’ve changed enough for this lifetime. I’ve got it under control.”
Ray and Winston poured on their proton streams again. This time the demons were not able to break free. “Now, Peter!” Egon yelled. Peter grabbed the baby from Rosa and brought him around to Egon. The physicist took careful aim, double-checked the settings, and fired on the child. Oscar was bathed in the light from Egon’s thrower, but he was completely unharmed.
Slowly, Egon pulled back his stream, until a small ball of purple light started to form around Oscar. It got bigger and bigger until it was about two feet in diameter. Egon stepped back and shortened his stream further. The ball of light began to drift away from Oscar, finally yanking free of the child as if a tether had been broken. Peter yanked the unmodified trap from under Janine’s desk.
“Trap open!” he yelled. He stomped on the foot pedal, and the purple ball of light disappeared into the trap. Peter and Egon could swear they heard a stifled scream.
Zuul and Vinz let out a howl of anguish. Peter pulled his thrower and took aim at them. Winston and Ray began shortening their streams as Egon had done. Green flares of energy started to form around Dana and Louis’s bodies. Winston and Ray nodded at each other and yanked hard as one. The energy came free of the two humans. Peter kept his thrower trained on the green balls of light.
The energy balls took on the form of terror dogs. They immediately pounced to attack. Zuul landed on Alice and Janine, sprawling the women on their backs. She covered them, growling down at them. Vinz cornered Egon and Ray. Winston grabbed the large modified trap and ran outside. Peter looked from Vinz to Zuul and back again. He was unsure of whom to shoot.
“Hit the male!” Janine ordered. “I’ve got this covered.” Peter smiled and shot Vinz. He went full-stream, and the demon was unable to break free. Vinz howled in agony.
Zuul roared at her mate’s cries then turned her attention back to the two women. She reached one paw up and began to bring it down in a swipe. Janine glared darkly into Zuul’s eyes. “I owe you, bitch.” A second later Zuul was airborne.
As this all continued, Winston had opened the trap containing Stay-Puft. The giant marshmallow man let out a tremendous roar. Zuul recovered from her blow and took a flying leap at Peter. The psychologist ducked out of the way, but he lost his hold on Vinz Clortho to do so. The two terror dogs turned and smiled at the Ghostbusters. “Gozer the Traveler has come!” they said in unison, their voices gruff and bestial.
They ran out of the firehouse followed by the other three Ghostbusters, and sure enough, there stood Gozer the Traveler, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. However, things did not work out quite as the terror dogs had planned. They assumed the appearance of the giant to mean a good sign for them.
They were mistaken.
Over the years, the Ghostbusters had become Stay-Puft’s friend, especially Slimer. He considered the containment unit to be his home, and he was always happy to help them. The terror dogs began barking orders to the giant to destroy the humans, but he did not obey. “Do as you are commanded, dolt!” Vinz exclaimed desperately. Stay-Puft frowned at them.
“GHOSTBUSTERS MY FRIENDS!” his voice boomed through the morning air. He reached down, grabbed the two terror dogs, and slammed them together repeatedly. They bit and clawed at him, but Ray chose a great form for him. It’s pretty difficult to hurt a marshmallow unless you have a flamethrower. “OPEN TRAP, WINSTON!” Stay-Puft implored. “DON’T WANT THEM GET AWAY!”
“But it won’t hold you all!” Egon yelled.
Peter grabbed the trap and positioned it. “How long, Spengs?”
“What?”
“How long do I have to get them into the containment unit once I trap them?”
Egon thought for a moment. “Precisely 42.6 seconds.”
“That’s all I’ll need.” Peter stepped on the pedal. “Thanks a lot, Big Guy!” he yelled to Stay-Puft.
As the giant was slowly pulled into the trap with the terror dogs in tow, he said, “I WATCH THEM! THEY BE GOOD OR ELSE! BYE GHOSTBUSTERS! BYE SLIMER!”
Slimer waved good-bye as the trap closed. Peter ran over, grabbed the trap, and then took off for the basement. The trap began to smoke as he went. He darted down the steps, clutching the trap like a pigskin. He hurtled down the metal stairs in the basement. He leapt over the railing of the last landing, and then slipped under the railing of the platform in front of the containment grid. He plugged the trap into the special adaptor that Egon made for the larger trap.
He opened the grid, letting the trap empty into it. He closed the grid, and the light turned green. They were safely inside. Peter collapsed against the railing, panting and grinning.
Egon and Winston poked their heads in the door. “Everything all right, Venkman?” Egon asked. The breathless Peter turned and gave him a thumbs-up. Ray peeked in and smiled.
The four men went back up to the garage together.
