Kingdom of War 16
Line in the Sand…There was a bruise above her left eyebrow and a cut bleeding on her right cheek, but the Dai Li Lieutenant was still conscious, and ready to continue her battle against Toph. However, the blind Earthbender wasn’t as willing to oblige her.
“You gotta be kidding me…” She lamented. “Can’t we just settle this by arm-wrestling or something?” “You…make jokes!?” Kyoko fumed. “I shall…teach you…to…” The rest of her ruthless threat died in her mouth as she felt immense heat just inches from her face. Looking up she saw its source, Azula’s palm ablaze. “I think the only thing you should do is burn.” Surprisingly, Zuko followed suit with his sister, preparing his own fire blast. “My sentiments exactly…” Unfortunately, the two Firebenders would be denied their wish, as a strong gust of wind extinguished their flames, thanks to the Avatar. “That’s not what she deserves.” “Oh, that’s right, you like to let them live…” Azula remarked as she & Zuko backed away. But Kyoko wasn’t thankful. “Showing me Mercy will be your last mistake, Avatar!” “We don’t have to keep fighting.” Aang told her. “All of us would rather settle this matter peacefully!” Azula was in defiant refusal of that statement, but out of respect and her current condition, she remained quiet. “Then you truly are a fool!” Kyoko responded. “Your words will do nothing to stop Master Feng from conquering Ba Sing Se!” “Can’t you see what you’re doing is wrong!?” Katara said, confronting her. “The people of the Earth Kingdom don’t want Long Feng in charge!” As the argument raged on, Aang began to feel a presence very powerful…and very familiar, overtake him. “You speak of matters that don’t concern you. You’re Water Tribe, so how could you ever know what the people of the Earth Kingdom want?” Just then, Suki raised her hand. “Uh, I live in the Earth Kingdom, and I don’t want Long Feng in charge.” “Seconded.” Toph chimed in. Kyoko grew annoyed. “You peons have no idea of what’s good for you! With Long Feng in power, The Earth Kingdom would have substantial power over ALL Nations. You cannot even comprehend—!” “ENOUGH!!!” The demand boomed throughout Si Wong Desert, rattling everyone within earshot as they turned to the Avatar. But what was most shocking was that Aang spoke in a dual-voice, with the other being a powerful Avatar from the land’s past. Stepping forward, Aang approached Kyoko and stuck his staff into the ground, immediately bringing forth a sand vortex which surrounded the entire gang, but excluded all Dai Li Agents. Kyoko chuckled at this spectacle. “You would face a wounded woman now, Avatar?” “SILENCE!!!” Aang barked, again in a dual-voice. “You speak not to the Avatar of this day and age, but to the one who protected the Earth Kingdom and the entire world long ago!” “Avatar Kyoshi?” Suki gasped. “Wait, Aang’s got a girl speaking through him again?” Sokka asked, a question which drew two elbow nudges from Suki & Ty Lee. “What sort of trick is this?” Kyoko demanded to know. “You want me to believe you’re the mighty Kyoshi just by changing your voice?” Kyoshi provided further proof of her presence in the Avatar by shaping the wall of sand around the area, until a portion of it behind Aang reveals Kyoshi’s face. “Would you like further proof?” “I’m good.” Sokka commented. Kyoko was in disbelief. “This can’t be possible…why are you here?” “To warn you of your potential actions!” Kyoshi answered. “You are bringing about a war in your own country, one that will rip it asunder.” Kyoko disagreed. “I am doing my part to help Master Feng—!” “Your Master simply years to be Dictator!” Kyoshi bellowed. “All he desires is to sit on the throne of the Earth Kingdom and rule it, and more! He could care less about its prosperity or its people!” “LIES!!!” Kyoko shouted. “You know NOTHING about our plan!” Kyoshi huffed. “I know of Long Feng! And I know of you!” “You know NOTHING about me.” Kyoko growled. “I know more of you than you even know of yourself!” Kyoshi revealed. “Lost Daughter of Si Wong, whose parents were murdered ruthlessly by rival Sand Pirates!” That revelation was enough to silence Kyoko as the Avatar of the Earth Kingdom continued. “What you do not know is the legacy that preceded you. Your ties do not even begin here in the desert. They began on Kyoshi Island…” “Enough!” said Kyoko. “You speak in riddles, only to delay my actions! If you—!” “I speak to inform you of your TRUE Heritage…” Kyoko interrupted. “…as my descendant.” The shocking revelation drew everyone’s jaw down to the sand. Disbelief ran rampant as Kyoko was held speechless for several moments. “You…no, this is a trick! There is NO WAY I descended from you! LIAR!!!” The emotion shown on the face in the sand, and Aang’s face as well, more than revealed Kyoshi’s disappointment. “It is the truth. Your mastery of sand should is evidence enough of it.” “STOP LYING TO ME!!!” Kyoko demanded. “I remember my mother, Kira. She never stepped foot outside of the Si Wong Desert! So you—!” “Did you say Kira?” Suki slowly stepped forward as all eyes turned to her, including Kyoko & Kyoshi’s. “I remember that name. “I remember Oyaji speaking of her. He said she was a good woman, but she wanted a family that wouldn’t be confined to the island. So she and her husband left for Ba Sing Se when she was pregnant. He sent messages to her…but she never replied…” “No…No, I…I can’t! My…my mother…she was…” And in a fit of emotional rage, Kyoko finally shattered. “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!” Her primal scream was enough to disrupt the tornado, sending the sand falling back to the floor of Si Wong. The sun shun brightly again on the group as they turned back to Kyoko…who now had tears streaming down her face. “My mother…my family…” She closed her eyes, but it didn’t help her escape the image of Kyoshi staring back at her, and she couldn’t ignore how her face was too similar to the Avatar’s to be coincidental. She couldn’t ignore the truth presented to her any longer. “I’m…I’m a descendant of Kyoshi…” Her tears began to stream down even more. “…and my actions…I only wished to assist Long Feng, for the good of the Earth Kingdom!” “But Long Feng isn’t good for the Earth Kingdom.” Katara replied. “He’s taking away its stability with his march to power.” “The Waterbender speaks the truth.” Kyoshi added. “What I wish of you is to cease your mad coup of power with him, and instead assist the Avatar with ensuring Feng’s downfall.” “I cannot…” said Kyoko, her voice trembling, barely above a whisper. “Though I am you descendant, I cannot stand against the man who raised me as his own daughter.” She lifted her head and gazed out onto the group, her eyes racked with sorrow as her tears continued to fall. “The man you see as such a tyrant saved my life, and trained me into the warrior I am today. You may deem him as reprehensible…but to me…he is my father.” The Earth Kingdom Avatar found herself moved by those words. “Very well. But know that there will be consequences if you attempt to protect Long Feng!” “I understand…” Kyoko responded softly. And with her final words spoken, a quick vortex of sand wrapped around Aang, and disappeared just as quickly as its arrival, revealing the Airbender back in control of his own body. “Did…something just happen?” “Nah, not much.” Sokka replied. “Just a woman speaking through you again, same old same old…” As Aang took a moment to regain his bearings, Katara slowly approached the sulking Kyoko. “So what will you do now?” “I do not know…” Kyoko answered. “I don’t even know my place in this land anymore…” “Maybe I can help you, then.” Suki offered, joining the two. “Come with me back to Kyoshi Island. You might be able to find your way there, or at least start.” “They would not have me.” Kyoko responded. “She would not have me on her island…” “That’s not true.” Aang chimed in. “She would more than accept you. You’re her descendant, which means you’re part of her family.” “And it means you’re part of the Kyoshi family, too.” Suki added, to which her fellow warriors agreed. Kyoko wearily lifted her head and turned to the Kyoshi leader. “You really would have me…after all I’ve done?” “If she mean getting her ass kicked by me, I say let her in.” Toph commented. “Toph!” Katara scolded. Suki simply ignored the comment. “We would be honored to have you on our island…” Kyoko took a moment to consider the offer laid out to her; for her enemies to offer what could be considered asylum and a chance at truth so easily, it well warranted thoughts of distrust. But hearing Avatar Kyoshi’s voice was no trick, and the very idea that her lineage could have descended from her…it was something she needed to know the answer to. So she slowly rose to her feet, and smiled softly. “You can take Appa if you need to.” Aang offered, to which Appa voiced his agreement. Kyoko’s head still hung low, but her smile shined through the bangs of hair that curtained her face as Suki lead her over to Appa, who prepared himself for flight. But as the other Kyoshi warriors joined to the young women, Toph began to feel a light rumble beneath the sands of Si Wong. “Guys…I think something’s coming…” The rumbling was felt even more by Kyoko. “She is right. AVATAR, YOU—!” THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!! It happened in the blink of an eye, a sand geyser that launched Aang into the air, and then grasped him tightly as it turned into a giant sand arm. And just as quickly in slammed the Avatar back to the desert floor, and out of consciousness. … Only a few moments passed before Aang returned to consciousness, but within those moments, everything changed. Si Wong had turned into a battlefield, as Katara, Azula & the others faced off against dozens of Dai Li Agents in a losing battle. It’s obvious that the entire scene was a sneak attack, and as the Avatar rose to his feet, he laid eyes on the man who orchestrated it all…Tsung. “Avatar, at last you’ve awakened.” “What are you doing!?” Aang demanded to know, before recognizing his attacker’s face. “You…you’re Tsung!” “So, you remember our encounter in Chin Village.” He replied. “Unfortunately the Fire Lord will not be stepping in for the miraculous save. I shall now take Long Feng’s daughter with us, and remove whatever brainwashing you have induced.” Aang then spotted Kyoko in the background behind Tsung, being restrained by several Dai Li. “He did not brainwash me! He revealed the truth to me!” “Truth?” Tsung repeated. “Truth from an Airbender, the last of his kind? His Nomad people always felt themselves superior over us.” “That’s not true!” Aang argued. “Air Nomads wanted peace with everyone!” “Enough of your deceitful babble! No one will step in this time, so let us see if you are truly the Master of All 4 Elements!” Aang could hear the arrogance in his foe’s voice and see it in his eyes. He was almost like Long Feng, except while Feng had a quiet air of confidence, Tsung chose to be boastful. It wasn’t a hurtful tactic, as his men & women held the upper hand against Aang’s friends. But the Avatar was determined to end this now. Tsung initiated the attack, rushing forward and using his abilities to draw up a pillar of sand aimed at the bald savior. But Aang effortlessly blew it away with his Airbending, and countered with a concentrated funnel gust of wind that forced Tsung to dodge the attack. Aang was impressed by the show of agility, but not enough that he wasn’t able to bring up a Sand geyser that engulfed the Dai Li Lieutenant and floored him. He shook the sand off of him, and growled. “Dammit!” Using the fingertips of his earthen gloves, he fired them at Aang, who waved them away with his Airbending. It gave Tsung the time needed to close the gap however, as he sought turn the fight physical. But his arrogance blinded him to the fact that the Avatar began as an Airbender, and he was quickly reminded as Aang effortlessly dodged every punch & kick not unlike a leaf blowing in the wind. “Stand STILL, boy!” And he did, long enough to administer a concentrated blast of Air that sent Tsung flying, and crashing into one of the boulders Toph drew up from the desert. “My name is Aang, and you’re losing this fight! Surrender now and no one else has to get hurt.” “Hurt…” Tsung muttered, as he took in his surroundings. “That…is what you shall feel in a moment! Prepare to experience TRUE pain!” With rage blinding him, he slammed his fist into the boulder, breaking off a chunk of it, and hurled it toward the bald Airbender. But his aim was off; as Aang didn’t even need to dodge the projectile. As he glanced back at it though, he immediately regretted the decision. It moved in slow motion for him, but he found himself moving even slower to stop it. It rocketed through the battlefield, past Zuko & Ty Lee, between Sokka & Jet, until it reached Katara, who had just frozen three Dai Li with the wisp of water she packed with her. She felt the jagged piece of rock coming at her, but was too slow to react. KRAK!!! “AAAAAGH!!!” The impact occurred so fast Aang couldn’t clearly see where it hit, but it was enough to knock her to the ground, where she stayed. “KATARA!!!” Sokka shouted. His shock would serve as the opening the enemy needed though, as he took the full brunt of a Dai Li boot in his sternum. Aang was in shock, left motionless by what he just witnessed. And it allowed Tsung to rush him and slam him to the sand, face first. He then added insult to injury by putting his foot on the back of his neck. “Insolent WELP! Shedding tears for your woman when you should focus on the fight.” He mocked. “Pathetic! She won’t be able to save you when y—!” THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!! Again, it occurred in the blink of an eye. Tsung suddenly found himself thrown from his upright position and now on his back in the sand, with grains of the desert falling to the ground around him. “How…what…?” Those were questions Tsung had that were answered once the last grain of sand returned to the desert floor. All action in Si Wong had halted, and all eyes were focused toward him. For Tsung, the arrogant 2nd-in-command to Long Feng, had awoken a fury not seen in this world for over two years. Aang had gone into the Avatar State…and his full fury was focused on the one who hurt his love. ********************************Lao Bei Fong was happy for his day to be over with as he walked the moonlit streets. Gaoling was near a state of madness just from the news of what was occurring around the Earth Kingdom. Province after Province was falling, with Omashu recently becoming part of Long Feng’s iron fisted rule. It was upsetting to him, since he hadn’t heard from King Bumi nor his daughter Toph, the latter he left behind for her safety. But as he approached the front gate to his estate, he felt for his own safety…and for good reason.
“Good Evening, Mr. Bei Fong.” The calm voice who uttered those words wasn’t familiar, but the face that stepped out of the shadows instantly was…Long Feng. “You! Wh-what are you doing here!?” Lao asked. “Just enjoying a midnight stroll…” Feng answered. “Gaoling can be such a peaceful Province. Who knows, I might even consider having my summer home here…” Lao developed a lump in his throat; Feng’s push for control of the Earth Kingdom has reached his doorstep. “No…but, this doesn’t make sense! Gaoling gives you no Strategic Advantage!” Long Feng chuckled at that statement. “Do I look like I’m that fool Ozai? Gaoling serves the same purpose as every Province within the Earth Kingdom; for me to rule them, and bring them to prosperity! And you shall assist in me doing that.” Lao was confused. “What are you talking about?” “A man with your wealth & social standing can easily access the Inner Wall of Ba Sing Se.” Feng explained. “You could even gain entry into the Royal Palace, along with an audience with the Earth King.” It then all came together for Lao; Long Feng needed him as a key to Ba Sing Se…and a puppet. “Never! I won’t help you, so get lost!” Long Feng sighed. “I truly did hope a wealthy man such as you would have enough sense…” With a snap of his fingers, Feng summoned two Dai Li agents, both carrying Lao’s wife & Toph’s mother, Poppy Bei Fong. “Poppy!” “She’s safe.” Feng assured her. “Not a hair on her head harmed. I’m not a barbarian, mind you. But I do wonder how she’ll fair with a visit…to Lake Laogai.” “No!” Lao said, his heart skipping a beat. “You wouldn’t!” “Joo Dee would love to have an assistant. And I’m sure the Earth King—!” “Stop!” Lao demanded in desperation, before finally relenting. “…you win, Long Feng.” “No, the Earth Kingdom wins.” Feng corrected him. “You will see that this is for the best. Now, let us prepare for your little trip…”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
