Late Night Home – Chapter 17
“Johnson, are you paying attention?”
“Yes ma'am.” The recruit stood there in a defensive posture, though his eyes were not where they should be.
Before the recruit could respond, Kim grabbed him by the arm, spinning him around and then flipping him onto his back with a thud. The air whooshed out of his lungs, and he was left gasping on the floor, staring up at the ceiling, while Kim kept hold of his arm in a lock, planting one foot firmly on his chest.
Kim stood over the defeated student, looking at the rest of the Global Justice recruits that stood along the wall, watching their companion as he struggled to regain his breath. “All right people, what did he do wrong?”
Most of the students looked uncomfortable, and Kim marveled at just how young they looked. Finally, one young student, a female, raised her hand. “He was looking at your chest when he should have been watching for what you were going to do next?”
“Exactly. When you are in a fight, never let yourself get distracted.” Kim let the arm go and smiled as she helped him to his feet. She didn't mind his staring too much. She was wearing a shirt that was low-cut and bare at the midriff, and considering how small she was up-top, it actually felt good that she was able to capture this young man's attention. Of course, it was the fact that he was staring in the first place that explained why she had chosen him for this demonstration. The abashed young man returned to his position, some of his fellows trying hard not to laugh at his embarrassment.
Kim stood in front of the students, looking over each of them. “Always be aware of what's going on around you. Distractions in the field can get you or a member of your team hurt.” Kim paused when she saw a hand raised, anouther of the young women in this group. “Yes... Andrea?”
Andrea seemed a bit nervous, but it didn't show in her words. “Is that what your husband does when he's with you? When I was a girl, reading about your missions, I heard he was the distraction for you to get the drop on the villains.”
Kim was momentarily thrown by the 'when I was a girl' comment, the feeling of being MUCH older than these kids in their late teens and early twenties creeping in, but she hid it well. Instead, she focused on the question itself. “Ron, my husband, is very good at distracting the opposition. He's excellent at finding the opportune moments to step in. But he's also a skilled fighter now, though he wasn't when we started. He's even mastered a few... techniques that I can't do.”
A couple of the young women giggled at the phrasing, but one was bold enough to comment. “You mean the pants dropping thing? Is that how you figured out he was the one for you?”
With the ice broken, a second young woman chimed in. “Is he going to be working with you at all? You know, to teach us distraction techniques?”
Kim smiled at the two young women, moving up to them. “No, my husband will not be joining us. But if you'd like to learn some distraction techniques, we can start right now.” Indicating that they should follow her, she led them just off to the side, putting them side by side. “All right then, we'll begin with some distraction techniques. Both of you, start doing jumping jacks and don't stop until I tell you to.”
The two women shared a brief look of confusion before turning back to Kim. “Uhh... ma'am?”
“You should be distracting the boys nicely while we continue with the lessons. Begin!”
Uncertain and embarrassed, they nevertheless began what they were told, they're bodies moving at the same time. Kim took a moment to watch, making sure she had the effect she wanted, then returned to the rest of her class. When she looked at them, she knew she had achieved what she had set out to do.
“Eyes front people.”
The sharp command drew their attentions quickly back to her. Kim smiled at the group, keeping a watchful eye. “This is going to be a test. I'm going to talk, and if I catch any of you being distracted, you are going to be running laps for me. Am I understood?”
The response was clear from every member of the class. “Yes Ma'am!”
“Good, then what we are going to be learning today are various techniques that will...” Kim trailed off as she watched a pair of eyes shift away, focusing on her distraction team. “Roberts, Rodriguez, give me five laps.”
The two looked about to protest, but gave up quickly when they saw the look on her face. Resigned, they started jogging, and Kim yelled after them to pick up the pace. Turning to glance at her distraction team, she smirked. Candace, the first of the girls to speak, was especially bouncy. “You girls are doing a great job as a distraction. Keep it up. Now, as I was saying...”
Kim's lecture was cut short by the familiar ring of the Kimmunicator, and she moved over to the bench to get her device. Turning it on, she smiled at her team's tech genius. “What's the sitch Wade?”
Wade's expression was sombre, and that troubled Kim quickly. “Kim, we have a situation.”
Kim instantly tensed, her expression going serious. “Wade, what's the problem?”
“Kim, there's a fire, at Bonnie's house.”
Kim's eyes went wide with shock. “Bonnie? Veronica?”
“Both fine.” Wade moved quickly to assure her. “Bonnie is in court right now and Veronica is at school. But Kim... it's bad.”
“How bad?”
“Really bad.” Wade pressed a key on the keyboard and a series of pictures flashed by. Kim gasped at the totality of the damage, one hand moving to cover her mouth. Wade popped back up onto the screen after a moment, frowning heavily. “The authorities haven't spoken to Bonnie yet, I told them to hold off. I talked to Tara first, and she wanted to handle that. She was hoping you and Ron could meet her at the courthouse.”
Kim nodded quickly, grabbing her stuff off the bench. “Call Ron and let him know. I'll be there in ten minutes and we'll talk to Bonnie together.”
“Right away Kim.”
Grabbing her stuff, Kim bolted out of the gymnasium, her thoughts on Bonnie, on Veronica, and what the two of them were going to do next.
When the door to the gym closed, the rest of the students glanced around nervously. Candace glanced at her partner, sweat pouring off her. “Do you think we can stop now?”
------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Walton winced as those cold, hard eyes locked on his. He shuddered as she looked at him, her gaze penetrating, and Mark quickly looked away. His case was not going well at all, and he knew it was because of this woman in front of him. His lawyer had told him that he would have no problem getting him off on the hit and run charge. At least, he was sure until he found out that he would be defending against Bonnie Rockwaller. His lawyer, who had gotten him off of half a dozens DUIs and a number of other charges, positively paled when he found out who he would be going against. Now Mark knew why.
The woman was a shark in teddy bears clothing. When she looked at the jury, she was all smiles and innocence, a beautiful young woman that seemed so sweet and kind. But when she wasn't looking at the jury, when she was focused on her target where the jury couldn't see her face, it was like looking at the devil herself. Mark had even seen the judge shudder a couple times while she had her sights set on him, and that just proved what he was feeling.
“Do you recall what your exact words were Mr. Walton, after you stepped out of your truck?”
Mark snapped out of his thoughts at the question, unable to look into her eyes. He knew he should, his lawyer always told him that meeting the opposing lawyers eyes showed a confidence, belying innocence, but he just couldn't meet hers. “I... I don't... remember...”
“You don't remember?” Mark could feel her stalking towards him, moving with the grace of a panther about to strike. “But surely you remember something? I mean, four other witnesses were there and they heard you.”
“I... I don't...”
“Of course you don't. But isn't it true that you only called the cops because you knew that you had one of those witnesses following you and if you didn't, you'd get into more trouble?”
“I didn't... I did it because it was the right thing to do.”
“You don't believe that though, do you? That's just what your lawyer told you to say. No, the right thing to do would have been to wait there, to check and see if the little girl you had hit was all right. Instead, you yelled at her while she was lying on the street, hurt after you hit her, and then drove off, and only called after you got home and found one of the witnesses had followed you. Isn't that right?”
“Objec...tion...” Mark's lawyer had started to object, but the brown haired shark turned her head to look at him and he sat down quickly, sweating profusely. When he didn't continue, she turned her sights back to him, smiling cruelly.
Mark knew that there was no way that he was going to get out of this. “Umm... uhhh...”
The door to the courtroom opened, and three people walked in. One seemed very familiar to him, but the other two he didn't recognize. The shark Bonnie seemed to know them, and after a nod to the judge, moved over to speak with them. They whispered among themselves, the serious expressions on the three that had come in speaking of something wrong. Bonnie's only reaction was a quick raise of the eyebrow.
Finished speaking, she turned back to the judge. “Your Honor, is it possible to adjourn for the day?”
“On what grounds?”
“Apparently, my house just burned down.”
There were shocked gasps from the jury and the audience, but it quickly settled down. The judge didn't take long to think of responding. “Case is adjourned until nine AM tomorrow morning.
With the bang of the gavel, the lawyer from hell followed the three others out of the courtroom, and Mark breathed easily for the first time since taking the stand. She scared him, in a way that no person ever had. The bitch had barely even reacted to her house burning down. Looking to his lawyer, Mark knew what he had to do. He just hoped that the State would still take a plea bargain, so that he never had to face that devil incarnate ever again.
------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as the doors closed behind Bonnie, the mask fell. In an instant, the hard-nosed attorney was gone, and in its place was a scared young woman. “The house... how bad...”
Kim winced, shutting her eyes. “Total.”
Bonnie made a noise that was a cross between a sob and a gasp, her eyes filling with tears. “Veronica's toys? Her baby pictures? Everything?” When Kim nodded, Bonnie broke down. Heaving huge sobs, she collapsed to the floor of the courthouse. Tara was there in an instant, holding her best friend in her arms, whispering softly to her that everything was going to be all right.
Kim and Ron held each other as well, one arm each wrapped around the others waist, tears in both their eyes. After a few minutes, Bonnie started to settle down, though the tears continued to flow. Helping her to her feet, they guided her out to the waiting vehicle.
------------------------------------------------------------
Bonnie sat morosely at the kitchen table, the coffee mug clutched in her hands. The occasional sob continued to sound, but for the most part she had gotten it under control. Ron sat with her consoling her, which seemed to help greatly. Kim and Tara stood in the living room, discussing what to do.
“She and Veronica could probably get a hotel room for a while. Her insurance should cover it no problem.”
Kim shook her head quickly. “No, we can't leave her alone right now. You said it yourself, she's fragile, no matter how she tries to hide it. She only had that breakthrough a couple weeks ago. Plus, Veronica needs someplace where she feels safe after everything that's happened.”
Tara grinned at her friend. “Just who is the psychiatrist around here.” Tara shook her head, glancing back at the kitchen. “You are right though. Problem is, my folks are visiting for a couple of weeks and we have no room for them right now.”
Kim breathed deeply for a moment, letting it out slowly. Casting one last look in the kitchen, Kim made up her mind. “They can stay with us.”
A strange look crossed Tara features, one that Kim couldn't quite identify. “I don't know if that would be such a great idea.”
Kim looked questioningly at her friend. “Why? Don't you think they would be comfortable here?”
Tara quickly waved her hands, dismissing that thought. “No, no, I know Bonnie and Veronica wouldn't have a problem with it. In fact, I think she'd be more comfortable here than anywhere else.”
Now Kim was suspicious. “There's something you aren't telling me, isn't there? Is Bonnie looking to seduce Ron?”
Tara placed a hand on Kim's arm, lowering her voice. “No, that isn't the problem. I can tell you now that Bonnie would never do that, to either of you. In fact, I think you'd find Bonnie would be the perfect house guest while she's here. I just... I can't talk about it.”
“Doctor/patient confidentiality?”
“Exactly.” Tara looked back to the kitchen, relieved to see Bonnie smiling, if only faintly. “Look, why don't you check with Ron and see what he thinks. I'll take over for him while you two discuss it.”
With a nod, Kim watched Tara headed back into the kitchen, bending down to whisper to Ron. Her husband nodded, glancing over at Kim, before heading out to talk with her. “You needed to talk to me about something KP?”
Kim was watching as Tara and Bonnie spoke before turning to her husband. “How would you feel about Bonnie and Veronica staying here until they get settled?”
Ron glanced back, pondering for just a moment. “I can't see a problem with that. Bonnie can take the guest room and Veronica can bunk with Michelle. I can't see a problem with it.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah. Besides, this is gonna hit Veronica hard, and you know how much she loves hanging out with the kids. Probably be the best thing for both of them, they'll need the support in the next few days and we can help them.”
Kim kissed her husband softly, smiling at him. This was the man she loved, the kind, sweet man who would always think of others. “All right, let's go talk to Bonnie, see if she even wants to stay with us.”
Walking back into the kitchen hand-in-hand, the couple sat down across from Bonnie, smiling to her. “Bonnie... we'd like it if you stayed with us until you get everything settled.”
Bonnie's eyes went wide, glancing first at Kim and then at Ron. “I... I don't know...”
Ron stepped in quickly, reaching across the table to take Bonnie's hand. “We insist. We can help out, and you know it will be easier on Veronica. She can even catch the bus with Michelle and James for school. What do you say?”
Bonnie glanced over at Tara, who smiled and nodded. Turning back to Kim and Ron, tears in her eyes, Bonnie smiled. “Thank you, so much. You don't know how much this means to me.”
Kim smiled, reaching out to place her hand over Ron and Bonnie's. “That's what friends are for.” Glancing at the clock, she sighed. “Now, I think all of us should go and pick up the kids from school and tell them what's going on.”
Rising to their feet, Kim wondered for a moment what Tara was worried about. Granted, the looks that Bonnie was giving Ron were a little disconcerting, but Tara had said that there was no way that Bonnie would try anything. It was what her friend wouldn't say that was troubling her. Kim sighed, wondering if this arrangement would help her get to the bottom of it all.

Author’s Notes – Next chapter... The looks from Bonnie get more and more frequent, and Kim decides that they all need to sit down and talk about it. Things don't... quite work out like she thought they would.
