Second Chance at Life.

Chapter 17.

All of the ghosts that attended the briefing yesterday in Ember’s apartment have just boarded Youngblood’s ship. They were busy doing final preparation while waiting for Danny, Sam and Tucker to arrive. Fortunately, the ghosts don’t have to wait for long as the arrived just about five minutes from the H hour.

To avoid ectoplasm contamination, Tucker and Sam were all wrapped up in Fenton Peeler, the portable ghost hunting suit made by Jack Fenton. They looked extremely nervous as they’re the only human around.

“Ember…” Danny nodded toward Ember.

“Danny…” Ember replied with a nod. The two somehow looked strained, perhaps it was because of the tense before the battle. “Is everything ready, Youngblood ?” Ember turned to face Youngblood who was standing behind the ship great steering wheel.

“Aye !”.

“Technus ?” Ember turned his attention to another ghost.

“Weapon system online… We’re good to go, Ember”.

“Good…” Ember took a deep breath. “This is it, folks… There’s no turning back…” He faced the young ghost captain. “Youngblood !. Full speed ahead !”

“Full speed ahead, aye !”.

The ghostly ship lurched forward and our heroes began one of the greatest battles in their life.

Unfortunately, things were not proceeding as planned. Freakshow’s guard managed to disable the ship propulsion and it’s now sitting duck. Rather than waiting to be slaughtered, Ember ordered abandon ship amidst the chaos. He flew the remaining distant to Freakshow’s throne room along with Danny.

The two were intercepted by great numbers of guards. Fortunately, the guards were not as strong as they are. It wasn’t that difficult for Ember and Danny to cut trough the guard ranks as they make their way into the throne room.

“Ember McLain… You’ve grown strong since the time I banished you”

“….”

“And Danny Phantom… I don’t expect to see you again…”

“… Freakshow…”.

Ember and Danny finally come face to face with the ghostly Freakshow. They kept themselves on high alert as if expecting any attack from their enemy. Slowly, Freakshow descended from his throne and faced his only obstacle from gaining total domination of the ghost zone and eventually the world.

Ember and Danny flinched every time Freakshow made a move. The two Halfas felt extremely nervous. In fact, they’re not even sure that they can win the battle. “Let us begin, shall we ?” A maniacal smile crept across Freakshow’s face as he walked toward Ember slowly.

Ember decided not to risk being attacked and attack first. With all of his available power, he made a mad dash toward Freakshow with an elbow pointed forward. Not letting Ember took the risk alone, Danny leaped high and dived with a foot extended downward.

The two attacked Freakshow almost simultaneously. “Not bad… Not bad indeed” Freakshow intoned softly. He simply glided backward as if he was a piece of fine silk, increasing his distance with his attacker. He waited for an opportunity where he can land his attack. The ghost didn’t have to wait long. He launched a counter attack as soon as he spots a weakness in Ember’s and Danny’s formation.

Freakshow launched an Ecto Blast and tripped Ember’s feet, causing the boy to stumble forward into Danny’s diving path. Danny was unable to pull himself off the dive and ended up hitting Ember squarely on the chest.

As the two stumbled in defenseless pile, Freakshow leaped high and launched a couple more of Ecto Blasts toward the two.

Fortunately, Ember and Danny spotted the attack and manage to evade it.

“Man… He’s so fast !” Danny gasped to catch his breath.

“And strong !” Ember added. Their first attack ended in total failure.

“I’ve an idea…” Danny made his move. He flew toward Freakshow with his arms wide open. Clearly, he was trying to catch him to slow him down just enough for Ember to attack.

It actually worked. Danny caught Freakshow and tried his best not to let his enemy escapes his grasps. “Ember !. Snipeshot, now !”.

Ember nodded and shot his Snipeshot Ecto Ray toward Freakshow. Under Danny’s restraint, Freakshow was unable to dodge the incoming projectile and was hit by it. However there was one drawback to this tactic. The Snipeshot Ecto Ray punched a hole on Freakshow’s stomach and continued to cut trough Danny’s.

Fortunately, before the ray hit him, Danny released his grasp and dodged the projectile. Still, it singed his hair slightly. “That was close…” He thought.

Freakshow was down. But he stood up few seconds later. Clearly, Ember’s attack only do minor damage. “Not bad, Ember…Time to get serious then…” Freakshow narrowed his eyes and glared murderously at Danny.

Without warning, Freakshow sprung toward Danny. His victim didn’t have a chance to respond as he hit him squarely on the chin with his knee. Not finished with the attack, Freakshow leaped upward, following Danny’s falling trajectory. He twisted himself, facing away from Danny and brought his full weight down upon the helpless Halfa. The second attack sent his victim slamming hard into the ground.

“Ugh… “ Danny coughed blood as he tried to stand up. However, before he can do it, Freakshow landed just on Danny’s chest. Danny coughed more blood. Not wanting to give up just yet, he shot an Ecto Blast at Freakshow. Unfortunately, the attack didn’t do much damage.

“You see, Danny Phantom… You’re no match for me…” Freakshow intoned softly. His eyes were fixed upon Danny as his brain searches for a nice way to finish the boy for good. “I don’t understand how Ember talked you into this…” He charged and Ecto Blast and aim it at Danny’s head. “Now, Danny… Say good-“

Freakshow didn’t have the chance to finish his sentence. Apparently, he was so focused at Danny and forgot that he was facing two enemies. A streak of green light went right trough Freakshow’s head. Ember just gave his best Snipeshot Ecto Ray shot from Freakshow’s back.

That one shot was more than enough. Freakshow fell down to his knees and began to disintegrate. He finally disappeared into thin air. Carelessness and overconfidence has cost him his live and his throne.

“Danny ?!” Ember rushed to Danny’s aid.

“Y… You did it, Em… You… Did it…” Danny whispered softly and smiled at Ember despite a massive wound he got.

“Don’t talk…Let’s get you out from here…” Ember slides his hands underneath Danny and gently lifts him up.

“Ember…”

“Danny ?”.

“Ember… ?”

“Is he going to make it ?”

“Don’t worry… He’ll be fine…”.

Danny finally regained his consciousness after spending a week in a hospital. He should have spent more days in the hospital, however, his ghost power boosted his recovery rate greatly.

“Sam ?... Tuck ?... Where’s Ember ?” Danny asked. He was still lying down on the hospital bed. Even though he has regained his consciousness, his physical conditions were still bad. In fact, Danny could barely move at all.

“Danny… There’s something that you need to know” Sam sighed.

“W… What ?”.

“Ember… He… He won’t be coming back…”

“WHAT ?!? No way !” Danny sat upright instantly. He can’t believe what he just heard.

“Remember what Ember said during the briefing ?” Tucker asked.

“Which one ?”

“He said ‘Whoever defeats Freakshow will be appointed as the new ruler of the ghost zone for as long as he or she exists as ghost’, remember ?” Sam explained.

“So… You mean… Ember’s…” Danny’s lips twitched.

“Yes… He has return to his full ghost state and won’t be coming back to us…” Sam bites his lips. “I’m sorry, Danny…”.

“N… No… EMBER !!” Danny howled as loud as he could. He felt as if his heart was crushed by a gigantic anvil. “Y… You said… We… Always… Together…” Danny broke into tear and could barely say any coherent word. Unable to restrain himself, he transformed into ghost mode and made a supersonic dash toward the window despite his poor medical condition.

“NO !! DANNY !!”.
