When Icy and the two guards got back to the virtual meadow it was to find Darcy sitting beside the main path staring down at the lake shore where Stormy sat perched on a boulder staring out at the water. Icy frowned as she walked up to Darcy.
"Hey. Is she still sulking?"
Darcy looked up at her and nodded.
"Ever since last night. I think we really cheesed her off this time. So how'd your session go?"
Icy gave a confident smirk.
"Pretty good actually. Shreever took me to the gym for some fencing."
Darcy's eyebrows rose as she stood up.
"Fencing? That's different."
She grinned at Icy suggestively.
"I hope you didn't wear him out too much."
Icy winked back at her conspiratorially.
"Let's just say I left him good and ready for you."
Darcy gave Icy a smug little smirk as she walked past her to join the guards.
"Well then, I guess I better not keep him waiting. Have fun with Miss Mopey Puss."
Icy frowned as she looked back at their sulking sister witch. An hour alone with Stormy was bad enough normally, but an hour alone with Stormy in a bad mood was not something Icy was really looking forward to. She glanced back at Darcy as she walked off with the two guards and for once was not really in the mood to appreciate the sight of her long, glorious hair caressing her backside with every step she took. It was going to be a long hour if she couldn't break Stormy out of her funk.
Heaving a sigh of resignation, Icy strolled down to the lake shore and leaned against the boulder Stormy was perched on.
"Hey."
Stormy didn't even look at Icy as she replied.
"Don't talk to me."
Icy gave her an 'Oh really?' look.
"Why? Because you're mad at me?"
Stormy dipped her head marginally as though starting to give a nod before thinking better of it.
"Yeah. That's right."
Icy leaned in a little closer, giving the big-haired witch a hard look.
"So what else is new? You're always mad about something."
Stormy put her hand on Icy's shoulder and shoved her away without looking at her.
"I am not! I just have a low shit threshold."
Icy leaned back and gave her an affronted and slightly suspicious glare.
"'Threshold'? That's a pretty big word for you. You been taking vocabulary lessons from Shreever?"
Stormy whipped her head around and fixed Icy with a fierce glare of her own.
"At least he listens to me and doesn't always try to push me down all the time!"
Icy planted her hands on her hips.
"Is that what this is about? You think we don't listen to you?"
Stormy turned her upper body toward Icy and planted her hands on the edge of the boulder.
"No it's not! Well, not entirely. You guys DON'T listen to me, but that's just part of it."
Icy thrust her hips out to one side.
"So what's the rest of it then?"
Stormy hopped down off the boulder and walked around to stand in front of her.
"The rest of it is that you guys never show me any respect! You're always making fun of me and putting me down. Like last night. I spilled my guts to you guys and you turned around and humiliated me!"
Icy poked a finger at Stormy's chest.
"Hello? News flash! We're witches! That's what we do! We don't do sympathy. If that's what you're looking for then go find a fairy to tell your sob story to. Besides, I only promised I wouldn't tell anyone else your story. I never said anything about not turning your bath time into a peep show."
Stormy clenched her fists down at her sides and gritted her teeth in anger and frustration.
"Hhrrrr! You wouldn't treat Darcy like this! If I was her you'd be falling all over yourself to say how sorry you are!"
Icy stabbed her finger at Stormy's chest.
"That's a lie! I don't treat Darcy any different than I do you."
Stormy slapped Icy's hand away furiously.
"Bullshit! You've never treated Darcy as shitty as you treat me! And I know why too. You like her!"
In that moment it seemed to Icy as though her entire world had tilted at a crazy angle. How could Stormy know that? Stormy wasn't known for being terribly perceptive. Besides, she'd always been so careful not to let it show. What had given her away?
"Wh-what do you mean by that?"
Stormy raised her finger and pointed it in Icy's face.
"I mean you're always treating her way nicer than me! You don't pull mean stunts on her, you don't talk down to her, you listen to what she has to say and you never make fun of her! Admit it! You like Darcy better than me!"
As the last three words left Stormy's mouth Icy felt a wave of relief washing over her. She didn't know! Stormy didn't actually know how she really felt about the enchantress! Following right on the heels of that relief came a surge of outrage. She folded her arms across her chest and glared at the Storm Witch.
"If I like Darcy better than you it's because she deserves it. I can count on her to pull her own weight. She thinks things through rather than rushing into things blindly and she comes up with plans we can actually use. She may not have the kind of raw power that you've got but at least she doesn't embarrass herself by doing every fool thing that comes into her head like someone I could mention."
Stormy glared murderously at Icy. She raised her fists, palm-up, and opened them into claws.
"HhrrrrRRRR!!! I'm gonna fry you for that!"
Icy gave Stormy a cynical half-smirk.
"With what, your fists? As long as we're wearing these stupid headbands we're completely powerless, remember?"
Stormy screamed in sheer frustration.
"RRRRAAAAHHHH!!!"
She reached up to her forehead with both hands and started clawing at her headband, trying to pry it off. Icy scowled at her in annoyance.
"Give it a rest, will ya? We already tried that the very first day we got here. Without the key there's just no way these things are coming off."
Still screaming in mindless fury, Stormy spun around and started bashing her head repeatedly against the boulder. Icy reached out toward her in mild alarm.
"Hey Stormy, cut that out! You're gonna hurt yourself!"
Stormy paid no heed as she continued pounding her head against the rock mercilessly.
"I... Want... This... Thing... OFF!!"
With that she gave her head a particularly vicious slam against the boulder. There was a sharp cracking sound and a burst of green light. The headband fell away from Stormy's head in two pieces, the strange green glow it usually emitted now extinguished. Icy stood there in stunned disbelief.
"I don't believe it. You did it! Stormy, you actually did it!"
Stormy stood there unmoving for a few seconds before finally falling over backwards. Icy caught her before she hit the ground. She was shocked at what she saw. Stormy's eyes were half closed and rolled back in her head. Her forehead was covered in blood and her face was turning pale. Icy shook her gently.
"Oh my god! Stormy! Wake up! This isn't funny Stormy!"
Stormy simply laid there in Icy's arms unmoving, her breathing shallow and irregular. A look of panic swept over Icy's face.
"Stormy, hang on! I'll... I'll go get help!"
She laid her sister witch down gently on the ground and looked around franticly. She realized that with the guards gone the only portal in and out of the meadow would be closed once more, leaving them completely cut off. She was starting to panic when suddenly she remembered the comm crystal Dr. Shreever had given her in case of emergencies. She raised her left wrist and pressed the small blue crystal secured inside her sleeve.
"Dr. Shreever, it's Icy! Come quick! Stormy's hurt bad!"
Dr. Shreever's voice responded almost at once.
"Icy, where are you right now? What's the situation?"
Icy pressed the crystal again.
"We're down by the lake shore, beside the big rock. Stormy's unconscious and bleeding."
Shreever's tinny voice issued from the gem again.
"Stay with her! I'll bring the healers at once."
Icy nodded as she pressed the crystal once more.
"Alright. Please hurry!"
Shreever's voice responded one more time.
"On my way. Just sit tight!"
Icy dropped to her knees, then sat back on her heels and drew Stormy's head into her lap.
"Hang on Stormy. Help is on the way. Don't you dare die on me!"
