Chapter 161
“You idiot,” Zuko hissed clamping his hand over her mouth. He had been at the North Pole, unlike those who’d only been stationed in the Earth Kingdom he knew about the Water Tribes alternate means of communication. Katara bit his hand and leaned , jumping off Korhi. She began howling as she ran south away from the sounds of battle. She was tackled hard to ground but she howled once more in spite of Zuko’s angry voice growling in her ear.
“Shut up Katara!”
She rolled over hooking her elbow around catching him in the head as she pushed upward. As she ran she inhaled filling her lungs and called out once more as Zuko grabbed her wrist and spun her around to face him. She used the momentum to chuck him in the chin. Katara ignored the pain and sent her voice down several octaves. The guardian animal of the Southern Water Tribe was the wolf. If they could only hear her and distinguish the two calls they would be one step closer to being found and rescued by her father. She took off running only to be slammed face first into the ground midway through the second long howl of another warning.
“Shut up Katara. If you keep doing this I can’t protect you. Shut up. Please just shut up,” Zuko plead while roughly covering her mouth with his hand.
She bit him; as soon as her mouth was freed the sound was emerging. She continued to bay as Zuko’s hand slammed over her mouth again. This time there was no hidden message just a desperate cry to protect her people. Zuko had grabbed her arm and was rolling onto her back when a masculine howl responded before echoing her cries of danger. Zuko’s eyes widened as Katara’s original signal to turn back was repeated by several others amidst Fire Nation yells of “She warned them.”
Katara relaxed when she heard the scout yelling, “Admiral, they’ve changed direction.”
Her relief was short lived. Admiral Chu-hua and others she recognized as officers from the Ursa came towards them.
“Damnit Katara are you stupid? Do you want them to kill you? Or your brother?” Zuko hissed frantically while shaking her. To mask his action he began yelling, “What did you tell them?”
Katara laughed in his face.
Surrounded by officers and his sister who could easily accuse him of treason by attempting to shield her Zuko did the only thing he could think of in that situation. The fist crashed into the side of her face just as a high pitched howl identified the caller was Northern. “What did you tell them?”
Katara spit blood back into his face. He slapped her. “What did you tell them? Damnit answer me, stupid bitch. What did you tell them?”
Azula watched the whole exchange. She had been waiting for the moment her brother lost control of the Waterbender. Allowing her to warn the rebels would be counted as a victory for her and proof that he was unfit as a ruler. If he couldn’t control a single girl he would not be able to control a nation. She grew livid as she watched him strike her. She too had been taught everything that he had about martial arts and the best locations to take blows.
She exhaled steam as the cheering Zuko was receiving grew louder as did the way he was cursing her. She had to do something. The troops foolishly believed that Zuko was putting a true effort into beating his beloved Waterbender. She could not let Zuko’s ruse work and allow him to be seen as a leader willing to make the tough decisions necessary for his people. She strode over to the cage demanded the Dai Li send out the Water Tribe boy.
Katara curled into a ball as Zuko’s heavy blows rained down on her body. When he grabbed her hair and dragged her upwards she saw that Azula had instructed the Dai Li to produce Sokka. He was on his knees. She was holding flames to his face. “What did she tell them?”
Sokka shook his head, “I don’t know. I don’t know. I’m not a Waterbender. I don’t know. There are things they don’t teach us non-benders.”
Azula turned towards her, “Unlike me, you care about your brother. What did you tell them?”
Sokka shook his head defiantly; the look on his face was just as determined as the one her mother’s wore in her final moments. Katara screamed, “Don’t hurt him. Run! I told them to run. Don’t hurt him.”
The Firebenders looked at each other. It made sense. Even the stupidest of animals had that type of instinct. It reasoned that the inferior intellect of the Waterbender would arrive at the same conclusion.
“What was the other signal?” Zuko growled shaking her.
“Danger. I told them to run there was danger,” Katara sobbed. “Please don’t hurt my brother. Please don’t hurt Sokka. I only told them to run. There was danger. Zuko please don’t let her hurt him.”
“Don’t you dare speak my name,” Zuko said carelessly backhanding her one last time. She crumpled as the edge of his wrist guards caught her in the temple.
Zuko was careful as he lifted Katara and carried her to the wagon with her brother. He laid her down gently placing her head on Sokka’s lap then strode back to Korhi. He used every meditation technique his uncle had ever taught him to maintain his outward composure. He’d just beaten Katara. The act had most likely saved her life but he had beaten her. He had sworn to himself he would never be violent with her again after putting her in the infirmary but he’d beaten her.
He had tackled her to ground then hit and kicked her as she lay curled in a ball. He had called her names and cursed her. The Komodo rhino began veering slightly to the left and he realized his hands were shaking. He had hit her hard enough to scrape the skin off his knuckles. He loosened his grip and gave Korhi her reign knowing she would set a straighter path without his interference.
