Chapter 16: Love and Hate.
(Alberta Provence, Canada - June 23rd, 2008)
The hover-pod descended from the sky to land near the still smoldering ruins. Shego hopped out and looked at the total destruction. All through the hundred mile flight from Edmonton, she felt a growing anxiety. Her worst fear was confirmed when she saw the charred corpse of one of the henchmen. The stench of burned flesh reached her, bringing an unpleasant memory with it.
The uniformed woman was carrying her away from the crater where her home should be. Nearby, she could see her brothers also being helped from the wreckage of the fallen treehouse. What she didn't see was her parents. Anywhere. She struggled in the woman's arms. “Where's my mommy? I want my mommy!”
The look in the woman's sad, compassionate, dark eyes filled her with dread. She flailed her hands at the woman's head, trying to get away from the horrible knowledge in that gaze. There was a spark of green. It shot out of her fingertips, directly at the woman's face. She felt herself falling to the ground as one of those eyes vanished in green fire. Anguished screams followed her into unconsciousness.
Shego fought to suppress the memory. The Global Justice agent forgave her, but she would never forget the vow she made because of what she'd done. Never since had she allowed herself to harm anyone in that way with her powers. She would destroy things, but never again would she burn human flesh. Ever. Even after leaving Team Go for a life of villainy, it was a promise she always kept.
She saw Drakken almost fall out of the pod. He knelt next to one of the corpses. His plaintive wail shook her.
“Sheeego! What happened?”
A sickening thought crossed her mind. It was unlikely, but... “You didn't leave one of your experiments going while we were out, did you Doc?”
He shook his head violently. “Of course not Shego! Not after what happened that time with the mutated jellyfish. Besides, I wasn't working on anything that could cause this.”
She shuddered at the mention of the jellyfish. That was an incident better left unremembered. He did have a point though. None of his recent work could be responsible for this kind of destruction. He didn't build laser canons, destructor rays, or super bombs anymore. Not since going legit.
The invasion changed everything for the blue skinned scientist. He gave up all his dreams of taking over the world, in favor of helping it. It was something he found he was actually good at, and liked doing. Not that the rest of the world saw things quite that way.
Working within the establishment proved to be too restrictive for him. None of his peers in the scientific community would give him a break either. There was just too much past to be overcome. Together, they decided to do the only thing that made sense. They came here, to the middle of nowhere, and set up the Drakken Research Institute. He built it along the lines of his old lairs, and staffed it with HenchCo guards. Here, far away from everyone, he could work in peace.
Until now.
Ruling out accidental destruction left only one reasonable explanation. Someone else did this, intentionally. A name came immediately to mind. That of one of his former villainous rivals. “Could Dementor have done this?”
He pulled off his long blue jacket and placed it over the body. His head shook once again. “He could have, but he didn't. He's still in prison.”
Shego bit her lip. She knew that, but the scene before her was making her mind work sluggishly. If not Dementor, who? “DNAmy?”
Again Drakken shook his head. “Not her style. Besides, she's in prison too. The Ron-Man has been busy...” His eyes went wide. “You don't think..?”
It was Shego's turn to shake her head. “No. Monkey Boy wouldn't need to do something like this.”
She thought about the former sidekick turned hero. He was one of the reasons Shego decided to stay with Drakken instead of continuing on her own in a life of crime. Since his rise to power, being a criminal, super or otherwise, was a very dangerous business. The world's prisons were full of villains willing to attest to that. Stoppable was so powerful, he was putting other heroes, like Team Impossible and her own brothers, Team Go, out of business. That was something she would rather not face.
“It's not a hero. They all know you've given up taking over the world. Dr. Director made sure of that. No, it must be somebody new on the scene...”
Drakken stood and gave her an odd look. “There is one other possibility...”
She turned away from the destruction, facing the dark woods. “Don't even think it Dr. D.”
“But Shego, you know it could be...”
“Don't go there.”
“Kim Possible.”
The name of her long standing nemesis made her clench her teeth in frustration. The redhead was a sore spot with her. He knew better than to bring up her name. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn't, but then circumstances were anything but normal right now.
She began to walk away. Over her shoulder, she called back to him. “Give some thought to where we are gonna live now. I need a few minutes alone.”
The woods engulfed her. Hiding the carnage from her sight. If only her feelings could be hidden away as easily. Unbidden, her mind dredged up the memory of the first time she met the young teen hero face to face.
She stood with her hands aflame as the underwater vacuum tube disgorged the intruders onto the rough stone floor of the lair's underground grotto. One, some kind of hairless rodent, was encapsulated in a plastic bubble. The other two wore wetsuits. Kelp and small flopping fish surrounded them as they got up off the floor.
Rather than take a chance of them trying any heroic antics, she decided a show of force would let them know who was in charge of the situation. She raised one of her flaming hands and shot a bolt of green fire just above their heads. The boy immediately screamed and dropped to the floor with his hands covering his head. The girl just stood there looking at her through goggle covered eyes.
Her reaction, or lack thereof, told Shego this wasn't just your basic, average, girl. She had heard stories from other villains about Kim Possible, but until this moment discounted most of them. Pointing a glowing finger at them, she spoke in her most menacing tone. “Drop the gear. Now.”
Shego could see the girl's wet face pale. She was trembling as she pulled the goggles off her face. Shego was glad to see her threat made some impression on the teenage hero.
Then it happened. Their eyes met. Green to green. Her heart skipped a beat as a wave of desire swept through her. The feeling hit her below the belt, both figuratively and literally. It was all she could do to keep her composure. To hide what she was feeling from the teen hero. All her life she fought the urge she now felt. The urge she knew could only lead to disaster.
The girl unfastened the straps holding her air tank in place, she dropped it to the floor and stood there in her body hugging wetsuit. Shego had to fight even harder to maintain her calm demeanor as she stared at the girl's lithe teenage body. The tight rubber emphasized her slender curves and pert breasts.
A knot of hatred formed inside her. Hatred for herself, for feeling this way. Hatred for the girl who made her feel as she did. She let that hatred fill her. Overcome her other emotions. Drown out the lustful thoughts surging through her body.
Shego took a step back. Her hand went to a control box on the wall. Using it, she lowered a hanging platform from the ceiling. Her voice sounded thick in her ears, as she barked out a command. “On the platform. MOVE! Or I start blasting.”
She didn't dare look into the girl's eyes again as she stepped onto the small space of the platform. Doing so would only weaken her resolve. She had to keep hating this girl. That was the only way she could keep from loving her.
Under her control, the platform moved up and out, over the shark filled pool. She was about to give in and meet the girl's eyes again, when Dr. Drakken emerged from the stairs and distracted her.
His long winded, self-serving, introduction gave her the time she needed to pull herself together. Only one thought remained. Kim Possible was the enemy. She had to be. There was no other way. All she had to do was keep hating her.
Shego's eyes closed as the first rays of the sun peeked through the trees. For years she kept that promise to herself. It faltered at times, but only once came close to failing her. Her resistance had been brought low by Electronique's modified Attitudinator. The time she spent with Kim Possible, while turned artificially good, only weakened her hatred all the more. She'd been on the verge of confessing her love, when Stoppable accidentally returned her to her right mind.
Since then, the struggle became harder. The only thing that made her able to maintain her hatred was the knowledge that Possible hated her too.
With a heavy sigh, she turned back. Right now she had other problems to, thankfully, deal with. She knew beyond doubt Possible wasn't behind the destruction. They needed to find someplace safe. Somewhere hidden. Somewhere she could think.
