Dr. Sato discarded his bloodstained latex gloves. "I think she's going to make it." he said. "For best results, we might want to have her wheeled out on the southern veranda when the sun comes up. Tell Lexington he can come in and inspect her collar now." Raphaela went to fetch Lexington. "Good thing she didn't need blood." said Dr. Sato. "Dr. Kimura told me Gargoyles have six different blood types and he's only now learning about the blood types of beast gargoyles." Dr. Sato read the tag. "Octavia. Kind of a fancy name."
Ariel inspected the collar for herself. It seemed welded in one piece and very close fitting. She was able to slide it just enough to reveal a mark on Octavia's neck. "Dr. Sato? What's this?"
Dr. Sato inspected the mark. "It looks like an electrical burn."
"A what burn?"
"You don't know what electricity is?" Ariel shook her head. "Well, it's what's making those lights work." He pointed at the florescent lights on the ceiling. Ariel still looked puzzled. "Do you have lightning where you're from, Ariel?"
"Sometimes we get lightning storms." said Ariel. "Everyone has the good sense to stay inside." She smiled. "I remember how angry Camaela got when lightning struck a tree she had planted."
"Well," Dr. Sato. "It appears to me that Octavia here has been struck by tiny lightning bolts emitting from this collar. Not strong enough to kill her, but enough to cause her great pain and damage to her epidermal layer."
Ariel shook her head at the horror of what she was hearing. "But...but who would do such a thing to a poor, innocent beast?"
Lexington came in with his tool box and hopped up on the gurney next to the still sleeping beast. Broadway could be seen peeking around the corner. He had wanted a better look at this new beast. Lex prodded with a diagnostic tool. "This thing has over 9,000 joules of power running through it!" he said.
"Is...that bad?" asked Ariel.
"Whoever's controlling this shock collar could turn Octavia into a crispy critter if they wanted." said Lex.
"Then we must take it off her now!" said Ariel.
"Heck, I can do that!" said Broadway, approaching the beast. He put his hand on the collar and started to pull.
Lexington tried to warn Broadway. "Broadway, that's not...." ZZZZZZAAAP! CRASH! "....a good idea."
Angela walked in. "What was that...Broadway!" She ran to his side. "Broadway! Speak to me!"
"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea...." Broadway sang dazedly.
"Snap out of it!" she said, tapping his cheek.
Broadway shook his head. "Whoa! What just happened?"
"You nearly electrocuted yourself." said Lex. "Then you nearly put a hole in the floor when you fell down."
"Hey!" Broadway glowered.
Lexington poked and prodded the collar some more. "No latches, pins, buckles or anything. I'll have to open the circuit before I...well, hello, Mr. Tracking Device!" Lexington held up a blinking red bulb.
"What's a tracking device?" asked Ariel.
"It's something that can be used to find someone or something." said Lex. "Unless we want Octavia's owner pounding on our door soon, we'd better get rid of it."
Ariel smiled. "Give it to me! I got a great idea on how to trick Octavia's owner." Lex handed over the device. Ariel nearly ran into Noah who was carrying Pelagia wrapped in a white blanket. Raphaela was just behind him.
"Somebody help her!" Noah cried out hysterically.
"Put her on the table." said Dr. Sato. He unwrapped the blanket and jumped back in shock when he realized that what he thought was a human woman with her hair dyed green was fish from the waist down. He forced himself to ignore that and concentrate on her blood soaked bandages. He pulled on a fresh pair of latex gloves and got to work.
"He's been poisoned!" Talon yelled, carrying a shivering Malibu in his arms. "Some giant snake monster in the Labyrinth."
"Never rains, but it pours." sighed Sato, praying the mermaid wouldn't need a transfusion. "Raphaela, help them?"
"Lay him down and show me the bite." said Raphaela. Talon lay Malibu on an exam table, his back exposed. Raphaela reached for a scalpel.
Dr. Sato saw what she was about to do. "Good Lord, what are you doing?" he shouted.
"I'm going to cut the wound and suck out the poison." Raphaela said matter-of-factly.
"You'll do no such thing!" said Dr. Sato. He clamped Pelagia's wound closed. "First of all, you'll wash the wound with soap and water." Raphaela laid the scalpel aside and went to get soap and water. "Talon, what kind of snake got him?"
"You know the kind that can talk and has the upper body of a pro-wrestler?" asked Talon. "It was that kind!" He sighed. Sarcasm wasn't going to help. "It had a rattle on its tail and sort of a diamond shape pattern on its back."
Dr. Sato opened a case full of test tubes. "Good thing Xanatos has a collection of anti-venoms on hand. I think that man has a plan for everything! Let's see...ah, here we are! Fifty cc's of polyvalent crotalid antivenin." He took out the tube and picked up a syringe. "The wound good and clean, Raphaela?" It was. "Good. Then swab some alcohol on his gluteus maximus." He prepared the syringe.
"His what?" asked Raphaela.
"He means this." Talon peeled back Malibu's loincloth so that his buttocks were exposed.
"Could someone someone help us?" asked Michelle as she and Griff walked in, both looking roughed up.
"Is anyone near dying?" asked Dr. Sato, not looking up as he injected the poisoned gargoyle.
"Hardly." said Griff.
"Then come back later." said Dr. Sato, tossing away the syringe and moving back to the mermaid.
"There's bandages and things in the cupboard." said Raphaela, going to assist Dr. Sato. Michelle opened the cupboard, momentarily stymied by all the various bottles and tubes she saw. She picked up a roll of gauze.
"I told you you made too much fuss." said Griff. "Oh, look! Mickey Mouse Band-Aids!"

"Staying on the GTF is strictly voluntary." Chavez was telling Travanti at the station. "However, this is not the first time your cynophobia has interfered with your ability to work. I strongly advise you to get some therapy, Phil."
"I tried." said Travanti. "He wanted me to do desensitization therapy. I freaked out and couldn't go back."
"Try again." Chavez advised.
"You guys aren't gonna believe what just happened to me!" Morgan walked in with a small, handcuffed, unconscious gargoyle in his arms. "You think gargoyles acting up like bored teenagers is weird? This one bit a chunk out of a mermaid!"
"A...mermaid?" Chavez cocked a brow.
"Yeah." said Morgan. "I found these two gargoyles fighting by the pond in Central Park. Remember where we caught that female gargoyle duck hunting, Travanti?" asked Morgan. Travanti shuddered at the memory. "Anyhow, the mermaid must've been the girlfriend of the other cuz he was begging for my help. I bandaged her up and wrapped her in a blanket. He swiped her up and glided off while I was calling the station. Said his name was Noah."
"You need to keep a better eye on these gargoyles, Morgan." said Chavez.
"This one didn't seem dangerous." said Morgan. "He just wanted help. He said he knew Tom Marison. Remember that weird Knight of the Round Table we caught a couple years back?"
Chavez nodded. That had been an unforgettable experience. She read the tag hanging from the collar on the unconscious gargoyle. "Shylock. Huh. Guess he got his pound of flesh."
"Come again?" Morgan asked. Travanti scratched his head in confusion.
"It's from a play by Shakespeare." said Chavez. "The Merchant of Venice. See, this man named Antonio borrowed some money from a man named Shylock and...." Suddenly, Shylock jumped to life with a bloodcurdling shriek and thrashed about, trying to bite Morgan. Travanti helped Morgan wrestle the shark gargoyle to the ground and cuffed his legs together while Chavez grabbed the phone and called for back up.
"We won't need any back up, Captain." said Morgan. "Travanti and I...." The cuffs on Shylock's hands snapped and talons whipped to Morgan's neck.

Nashville held up a banana for the parrot to see. "Can you say 'banana'?" he asked.
Ruby cocked her head this way and that, examining the yellow fruit. "Banana!" she squawked.
"Good!" Nash peeled the banana. "You want some?" he asked, breaking off some banana.
"Want some!" said Ruby. Nashville fed some banana to the parrot as Ariel entered the kitchen and opened the freezer.
"Hi, Ariel." said Nashville. "Watcha doin'?"
"Lexington found this on Octavia." She held up the red blinking bulb.
"Oh, a tracking device." said Nashville.
"And I know just how to be rid of it." She took a dead feeder mouse out of the freezer and stuffed the device in its mouth. "Now, I need Cordelia. Cordelia!" The owl perched on top of the door screeched. "Ah, there you are! Look what I have for you!" She held up the mouse. Cordelia cocked her head to the side, her shiny black eyes on the dead mouse.
"Oh, I see!" said Nashville. "You fed the tracking device to the mouse and you'll feed the mouse to an owl who will fly all over the city and confuse the tracker! Brilliant!"
"Trouble is," said Ariel. "Cordelia doesn't much like these feeder mice. She likes her food to move."
"Oh, I can fix that." Nash took the mouse from Ariel and used his fingers to make the mouse look like it was kicking its legs like Michigan J. Frog. "Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal!" Cordelia swooped down and snatched the mouse from Nash's hands. "Whoa! Better count and make sure I still have all my fingers."
Cordelia sat on the counter and self-satisfiedly gulped down the mouse, the tail hanging out of her dimunitive beak like a strand of spaghetti. "Good girl, Cordelia!" Ariel said, picking the owl up. "Now, go for a fly!" She opened up a window and released her. Cordelia spread her wings and silently flapped off into the night.
"But what about when she comes back?" said Nashville.
"By then," said Ariel. "Cordelia will have coughed up a pellet containing anything she couldn't digest. That includes the tracking device."
"So, in the end," said Nash. "Whoever finds the tracking device will find it in a pile of owl crap." He grinned approvingly. "Gross!"

There was a waiting room of sorts just outside the medical bay. "Hold still now." said Michelle, cleaning the bite on Griff's arm. "Bites can get infected very easily." Noah suddenly burst into tears. "Me and my big beak!" Michelle muttered, wrapping a bandage around Griff's arm as Angela tried to comfort her brother. Broadway looked distastefully at his intended embracing another male, but reminded himself that it was just a sister comforting a distressed brother.
"Oi, Lexington!" said Griff, holding a rag to the side of his face. "How come you never told me about your evil twin named Brentwood? Bugger came at me like a rabid chihuahua."
"If you had a genetic duplicate that joined the Nazis," said Lexington. "Would you want anyone to know?"
"Ah, point taken." said Griff.
"I don't think Regan is our enemy after all." said Michelle, swabbing antiseptic on the claw marks on Griff's face. "She said anyone who was a friend of Thailog's bitch- her words- was her enemy. If this Thailog person is an enemy, then Regan could be a friend, if we can find her again." She put a few Mickey Mouse Band-Aids on Griff's wounds. "Will that hurt coming off?"
Griff chuckled. "I told you, my lady, I've suffered far worse."
"Is Malibu going to be OK?" Delilah asked Talon.
"He'll need to rest here for the day." sighed Talon. "You can stay with him if you want."
"What do you know of the beast that attacked Malibu?" asked Goliath.
"Just that it was big, scaly...." Talon described. "Had the upper body of a gargoyle and the lower body of a snake."
"Sounds like Zafiro." said Goliath. "But he's in Guatemala and would never attack unprovoked."
"It was bright yellow with a brownish diamond pattern on the back." said Talon. "And it had a rattle on its tail." Goliath shook his head. That didn't sound like Zafiro. "When I knocked him out, I noticed he had a collar with a tag that said 'Claudius' on it."
"Claudius...." Goliath pondered the names. "Octavia, Regan, Claudius.... All names from Shakespeare."
"And that's not the only stranger in the Labyrinth." said Talon. "Claw claims to be in love with a female gargoyle. Didn't get a name or a description. Be just my luck if her name was Juliet or something."
"All the females from the London clan that came here," said Griff. "Already have their own males. Hope it wasn't one of ours."
"I could ask my sisters where they were tonight." said Angela. "But most of them have males too."
"The ones we invited from the Ishimura clan have males too." said Lexington. "Except for the two who have each other."
Katherine and Tom entered the room. "Noah," said Katherine. "We heard about....Angela! What in God's Name are you wearing?"
"Oh, it's called a bikini top." she said. "I lost my other top."
Tom removed his cape and tossed it to her. "Cover up, young lady!" he told her. Angela sighed, be decided to humor her Guardian. Katherine took over comforting Noah.
Dr. Sato entered the room, bloodstains on his jacket. "The operation was a success." he said.
"Does...does that mean Pelagia will live?" asked Noah.
"She will have an interesting crescent shaped scar." said Dr. Sato. "But she will live." He heaved a great sigh and collapsed into one of the chairs. "What a night! A beast, a gargoyle poisoned by a snake monster and then a mermaid! Of late, I have seen the strangest of patients!"
"Did someone call me?" asked Patience on entering.
"He said 'patients'." said Griff. "Not 'Patience'."
"Well, anyroad," said Patience. "The little 'uns are all back now and Goliath, you have a phone call from that Elisa person."
Goliath left the room and picked up the hall phone. "Elisa?" he spoke into the receiver.
"Goliath." Elisa answered. "I'm calling from the precinct. Morgan just brought in a gargoyle that tried to bite his face off."
"Is he alright?" asked Goliath.
"There was quite a bit of blood. The paramedics took him away. He was able to walk, if screaming and cussing the whole way." said Elisa. "The gargoyle is tranquilized and in a cell under constant guard. It looks like Lexington and Jaws had a love child."
"Elisa, does this gargoyle have a collar and a nametag?" Goliath asked. "Like the ones you put on your cats."
"Funny you should mention that." said Elisa. "He did. It says 'Shylock'."
"Shylock." Goliath repeated. Yet another Shakespearian name.
"Yeah. Margot Yale's coming over first thing in the morning to have a look." said Elisa. "Then the Gargoyles Task Force will decide what to do. Goliath? Do you think this could be one of Sevarius' toys?"
"No doubt about it." said Goliath. "Thailog is likely a culprit too. Griff and one of Angela's sisters got in an altercation with Brentwood and another gargoyle possibly created by Sevarius. Two others were spotted in the Labyrinth. One of them poisoned Malibu."
"Is he going to be alright?"
"Dr. Sato gave him an antivenom. We also found a severely injured beast that looks like a clone of Bronx, but female." Goliath sighed. "On top of that, the Quarrymen are about. Angela had a close call with them."
"Is she alright?"
"She had to change her attire to something Tom and Katherine found immodest, but she is well."
"Travanti mentioned a female gargoyle with a beast they caught duck hunting in Central Park. Morgan said Shylock took a bite out of a mermaid and that a male gargoyle glided off with her."
"The duck hunters would be Ophelia and Perseus. The mermaid is Pelagia, mated to Noah, one of Angela's rookery brothers."
"Well, it's almost sunrise." said Elisa. "So, I know I'm going to have to let you go. You be safe, alright?"
"You too, Elisa."
"I love you, bye-bye."
"I love you too." he hung up.
