Episode 18 - 21: Souzin's Comet
"Katara's army sparked dozens of rebellions and gave the Earth Kingdom hope that my father is planning to crush on the day of the comet. I know you're not ready, but if you don't defeat the Fire Lord, there won't be anything left to save." Zuko delivered his speech and his listeners were rapt. "And you have to understand, Aang. He's lost his mind. The only thing that will ever stop him is death."
"But I was raised by the monks to believe that all life is sacred. I don't think I can do this."
"Maybe after you watch him burn through several thousand people you won't be so judgmental," Katara said and crossed her arms.
"I wasn't being judgmental. I just don't want to kill anyone."
"Maybe Katara can show you how to take away his bending, like she did Azula," Zuko offered.
"I could show you the idea behind it, but we haven't worked on anything to do with healing and we have no one to practice on."
"I didn't know you could do stuff like that," Aang said.
"The Northern Water Tribe has no idea how much power the healers have." Katara looked at the trees as she spoke. "You have to learn how to destroy before you can heal."
"What's that?" Suki stood and pointed to something that was flying towards them.
"Is that Hawky?" Sokka smiled and waved to the bird, but it flew to Zuko.
Zuko unrolled the message it carried. "It's from the Sea Ravens," he explained. "There is an entire Water Tribe Fleet headed towards the Fire Nation."
"The Northern Water Tribe," Hakoda nodded. "They must be taking the Earth Army to the Fire Nation."
"Did you co-ordinate that?" Several emotions flickered across Katara's beautiful face and Zuko put an arm around her. He ignored the momentary glare he got from Hakoda.
"I did. You can't deny we need the help."
"I know, but..." She leaned her head on Zuko's shoulder. "There are going to be so many innocent people that get hurt."
"This is war Katara," her father reminded her gently.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"From this moment on the world shall know me as its supreme ruler. I am the Phoenix King!" Ozai addressed his nation.
"Isn't it wonderful Mother?" Azula asked.
"Oh, yes my dear," Hama said from her small two-man palanquin. Since she could not walk two bearers ferried her where ever Azula wished. Azula was to become the new Fire Lord, and her husband would rule the world.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Why was your performance so poor this time?" Yun Qu asked Ty Lee.
"I'm just picking my battles. If I make the dogman some money, but don't show off too much, maybe I can escape getting any more of these ugly tattoos," she said while tending to Mai's back once again. Mai just stared at the wall of the wagon, trying not to throw up again.
Ty Lee had three of the tattoos. One on each shoulder and one on her upper back. Other dogmen joined in the Agni-Mizong's they attended just so their fighters could be pitted against Mai and Ty Lee. Even though they hadn't yet earned all of the tattoos, their popularity had spread amongst the plebeians.
Their infamous reputation allowed Ty Lee to stop her opponent without killing them, without pleasing the crowd, and avoid having the tattoos done without the worry of being put down, though she was still forced to spend the night with the handlers for her insolence.
By their very nature Mai's knives pleased the crowd and she couldn't throw even one shiny object without the audience cheering wildly. The people had dubbed her Khukuri, and the dogman had started advertising her. Her own tattoos spread over her shoulders and down her back. She would not be spending any time with the handlers.
She had officially passed the sisters' record, which earned their respect but not their cooperation.
In the last fight Mai had let the Earth Bender she fought get in a few blows. Her cheek was bruised and her left thigh was black with pain. If Ty Lee hadn't been screaming her name she might have let him finish her off.
"When you first joined us I thought the bubbly one would be dead by now and that you would be the one to survive. Now I am not so sure," said Jin Wu.
Mai couldn't summon the energy to agree with her, instead she threw up again. Zuko would never find her. She would rot here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I can't believe Aang just left us," Katara said as they slid off of Appa.
"I'm sure there was a good reason. Now why are we at a seedy Earth Kingdom tavern again?" Sokka asked. Once again in the Earth Kingdom they were a long way from where they needed to be.
"June," Katara said.
"She's the one that led me to you in Ba-hai," Zuko said.
"Oh, did she? I'll have to talk to her about that."
"If she hadn't, you'd be dead," Zuko reminded her.
"I wish dad were here," Sokka said.
"We're lucky he volunteered to take the balloon to make contact with the Northern Water Tribe fleet. Hopefully he can convince them that Zuko and the Sea Ravens are on our side," Katara said wringing her hands. At her insistence Haru, Teo, On ji, and The Duke had gone with him.
"Don't worry. He's a good leader, and you did a good job with the Army. They will listen." Zuko wrapped an arm around her as they walked into the tavern and Katara was grateful he was with her.
June was in the middle of a brawl, which she seemed to have complete control of.
"I don't know who this June lady is, but I like her!" Toph exclaimed.
Zuko released Katara and approached her.
"We need your help," he said.
June sat and swirled her cup. "I thought I told you not to contact me again."
"It's important."
"And why would I help you do anything?"
Katara stepped forward and looked at the bounty hunter. She dropped her cup and stood, visibly shaken.
"I'm at your service," she said reluctantly. The group eyed Katara.

Unable to locate Aang, June led them outside the borders of Ba-Sing-Se where Masters Pakku, Pindao, Jeong Jeong, Bumi, and Iroh were camping. Reuniting with Iroh had been a happy moment for Zuko, especially when he gave him details of their adventures and how he had instructed the avatar, but they also had to tell him Aang was missing.
They spent the night in their camp. Zuko snuck into Katara's tent and spent the night with her in his arms. When he woke Katara was already awake and a soft happy expression covered her face.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked, smiling.
"It's a boy," she whispered like it was a precious secret.
"I love you and our boy, Katara," he whispered back and moved his hand over her stomach. She was starting to show and he liked the way her belly swelled beneath his palm. Her eyes became wet, but she kissed him and sighed happily.
Reluctantly they joined the others for breakfast, and Zuko asked his uncle if he would help them defeat Ozai.
"History would only see it as a brother killing a brother to grab power. The only way for this war to end peacefully is for the Avatar to defeat the Fire Lord."
"Will you take your rightful place on the throne?"
"No. Someone new must take the throne. Someone who has suffered like the common people have suffered. You have restored your honor, and you must restore the honor of the Fire Nation."
"But the Avatar isn't here. What can we do?" Toph cut in.
"We each have our own destinies. Aang will face the Fire Lord. Our mission is to take back Ba-Sing-Se. Zuko, you must return to the Fire Nation so that when the Fire Lord falls you will be there to restore peace. However, Azula will be there and you will need help."
Katara put her hand on his shoulder and smiled at him. He was petrified by the thought of leading an entire Nation, but at the moment he thought he could do it with her.
"What about us?" asked Sokka.
"What do you think you should do?"
"I think even though we don't know where Aang is, we should do everything we can to stop the Air Ship Fleet."
"Then if Aang needs us, we'll be there to help," Toph added.

Mai and Ty Lee woke to a loud commotion and peeked out of their wagon as far as their chains would allow. The handlers were dragging two more people from another wagon. A woman walked close behind them.
"I have a gift for you!" the dogman announced and presented the woman. "I bought her this morning. She will be your nurse." The woman kept her face down, but walked quietly as the dogman instructed.
"We also have a new prospect. You will help me put him through the keep for the next few days until he is ready to fight." Behind him a boy was struggling against his chains and all six handlers kept them taut so that he couldn't move. "You'll have to be careful though. He's an earth bender."
"Who's the girl?" Mai asked. A girl was bound and laying on the ground in front of the wagon.
"His sister. She's just insurance," he said waving his hand.
Staring at the girl Mai felt rage for the first time in days. She had an idea of what would happen to the sister if the brother did not cooperate.
"You're bleeding," said the woman. "Let me help." She produced a sack and starting taking supplies from it. Her face was finally visible and Mai gasped silently. Ty Lee almost spoke but Mai nudged her. The three of them climbed back into the wagon and the woman starting tending Mai's newest bleeding tattoo.
"What are you doing here?"
"I was sold into the Agni-Mizong over three years ago. I've been healing fighters ever since."
"But didn't you try to escape?"
"Escape to what? At least here I can help people and get news of my son."
"Have you heard that he's defected?" asked Mai.
"Or that Ozai married Azula?" Ty Lee asked. Mai nudged her. "Sorry," she whispered.
"I've heard," Ursa whispered. "But at least Zuko is doing the right thing. Weren't you married?"
"We were, but I stayed behind like an idiot thinking I could send him information. Then Azula caught us." Mai couldn't help the stirring of hope she felt. The sickness seemed to come less often, so she felt stronger, and now they had an ally.
"Well, that girl is in trouble, and we need to work out an escape plan or she's fodder," Ty Lee said helpfully.
"Yes. It's time we all got out of here."

Aang found himself in the middle of a strange island. The turmoil in him outweighed the panic so he sat to focus deeply within himself to ask his past lives for help. None of them said anything he wanted to hear.
Roku told him to be decisive. Kyoshi gave him a speech about justice. Kuruk told him he must actively shape destiny, and even Yangchen told him he would have to sacrifice his own needs for the world. Not only did they want him to kill the Fire Lord, but he knew he would have to truly let Katara go. It was the only way.
"Momo, are those mountains getting closer?" He jumped to the tallest tree on the island. "No, we're moving closer!"
He dove beneath the water and discovered the island was really a giant animal. It lifted him out of the water.
"A lion turtle," he said and bowed.
After their conversation it brought him to land and told him to wait and the Fire Lord would come. Feeling an unnatural calm Aang watched the creature retreat.

Sozin's comet blanketed the world in a red glow.
The coronation temple was empty save for the Fire Sages and Mother. The Dai-li had turned against her and her own servants had tried to kill her. She had banished them all. The only one she could trust was Mother, because Mother loved her. Mother couldn't fight her with no legs.
No one would be at her coronation, because they were all against her, but she would show them. She would be the greatest leader in Fire Nation history.
She heard a growl from the air, and an air bison landed in the court yard.
Azula laughed when she saw Zuko and the water bender jump to the ground.
"I challenge you to an Agni-ki, brother!" she shouted. "It's the fight that was always meant to be."
"I accept!" Zuko shouted back.
"What are you doing? She's just trying to divide us," Katara said appalled.
"I know. But I can't risk losing you, and I can't ask you to risk our child. I can take her this time. I can't explain it, but there's something off about her. I know she's got her bending back, but she's slipping."
"Stop babbling, and let's do this."
Her brother squared off with her and she wobbled, almost falling, but caught herself. She was filled with energy, could feel it crackling through her veins. She sent a torrent of blue fire at Zuko. He caught it and sent it back to her. With each blast of fire Azula felt more and more powerful, but Zuko blocked it easily. She raced towards him with fire shooting from her heels, but he stayed in one place, spinning and knocking her down.
Azula was starting to get tired. It used to be easy to bend, she could have done it for hours, but thanks to her pregnancy it took all of her energy to do it. There was only one thing she could do to end this.
Swinging her fingers in a circle around her she drew lightening, but instead of aiming it at him she aimed it at Katara.
"No!" he screamed and flung himself in front of her. He made the motions to redirect it but took most of the damage and fell to the ground. Katara rushed forward, but Azula shot another ball of lightening at her to block her efforts. Now she was winning! She laughed and stumbled towards Katara. This was over. She had won!
"Awe, do you care for my poor dead brother?" she yelled. "Are you in looooooove. You knoooow he's married to Mai."
She pushed another flood of fire against the columns Katara was hiding behind. "But you don't have to worry about her anymore either. The Agni-Mizong will crush her!"

Their eel hound arrived just as the Air Ships were taking off. Toph launched them all onto the nearest one and they subdued the crew, dumping them into the ocean.
"Now we just have to use this one to take out the rest," Suki said cheerfully.
"I hope it's as easy as you make it sound," said Toph.
"Fire Lord Ozai, here we come," said Sokka and he aimed the ship towards the rest of the Fleet.
The Fleet reached the Earth Kingdom before they could take out the ships and the burning began.
"Whoa. That's a lot of fire, isn't it?" asked Toph.
***********************************************************
"Only once every hundred years can a fire bender experience this kind of power." Iroh took deep calming breaths and the ring of fire around him breathed with him. With his last breath he raised his arms, lifting the circle into a large ball. Then, with a cry of chi, he shot the ball into the wall of Ba-Sing-Se.
The others followed using their own talents and the battle to take back Ba-Sing-Se began.
**************************************************************
Aang watched as the first of the Air Fleet began burning the land. He sent Momo away and sent disks of rock hurtling towards the Fire Lord's ship, taking it down. Ozai used his bending to come to Aang.
"The Universe delivered you to me as an act of Providence," the Fire Lord told him.
"You have the power to end this peacefully," Aang said.
"You're right, I have all the power in the world!" Fire shot from his limbs and mouth. He kicked and pushed a wall of fire towards Aang, following in its path. Aang blocked and flew backwards with the impact. The Fire Lord didn't stop his attack. He blasted forward, destroying the Wu Long Forest as they went, giving Aang no time to do anything but block, block, block.
He was knocked down several times. His ribs and back began to hurt. He bent rock around his body to protect himself, but Ozai blasted through it with fire. Aang avoided the lighting Ozai aimed at him and even managed to redirect it into the sky, but it weakened him and he was knocked into the water.
He rolled himself into a ball of stone to give himself time.
"Prepare to die!" Ozai screamed and blasted the ball with all his power.
*****************************************************************
Hakoda pointed his sword towards the barricade. "Now!" he screamed and waves of ocean fell over the Fire Nation vessels.
The Sea Ravens had joined them despite the general bad feelings towards them, gave them valuable information, and now they were breaking the blockade.
Once most of the vessels were belly up he looked towards the land. It was time to have this out on Fire Nation soil.
*****************************************************************
Iroh set fire to the last Fire Nation flag in Ba-Sing-Se. Just as in his dream, the city had finally been re-conquered.
********************************************************************
Katara rolled and Azula's attack barely missed her.
"I'd really rather our family physician look after little Zuzu if you don't mind!" she cackled and swung her hand around, lightening crackling from the tips of her fingers and crashing around her. Katara ran behind another column.
"Zuzu, you don't look so good!"
Katara landed on a grate after Azula blasted apart several more columns. She realized there was water running through tunnels beneath the temple. She hadn't felt it before because she hadn't been able to concentrate.
She revealed herself to Azula.
"There you are filthy peasant!" She stepped over the grate and Katara jumped. The water jumped with her, freezing them both mid-way. Thawing the water around herself slowly she swam behind Azula and chained her hands to the grate as she went. As soon as she was firmly secured she let the water go completely and ran to Zuko.
Zuko didn't respond when she turned him over and she felt a searing panic take her. Drawing water to them she let it glow and searched his body. He was alive. Carefully she knitted the burnt tissues and finally felt his energy flowing normally.
"Thank you," he said smiling up at her. Azula was throwing a hysterical fit, blowing fire, and crying.
"I should be thanking you." Katara felt weak but she kissed him, grateful to feel his lips warm against hers. Then she gasped.
"What's wrong?"
"I don't know," she said holding her stomach. "It hurts."
"Katara, you're bleeding!"
She looked down and saw her pants and tunic were covered with blood.
*****************************************************************
They had taken out most of the Air Ships, but they still had a few left. Separated from Suki while wrecking the ships Sokka forced himself to trust that she would keep herself alive so he could finish their mission. He caught Toph just as she was knocked off the narrow platform, but there were five soldiers baring down on them and he barely had a grip on her hand.
"This looks like the end, Toph."
Then the soldiers retreated. Another ship crashed into theirs and he and Toph fell to the top of the other ship with minimal damage.
"Suki! You saved us!"
***************************************************************
Aang held off the heat of Ozai's attack for as long as he could, but finally it was too much. He let the rock break apart and he was flung into a rock pillar. The knot in his back eased and time slowed for him. Able to open his chakras now, he finally let everything go, including Katara.
The Avatar State took him. He was a mass of energy. Even in the Avatar State he could feel the energy of the comet. He aligned the elements, each one in orbit around him like Katara's ribbons. He could feel Ozai's energy and it seemed amazing that moments ago this man might have defeated him. It was time to reset the balance.
He chased Ozai across the rock forest and extinguished every thrust of fire he was able to dish out. It was so easy. He wrapped Ozai in water and prepared to take his life.
"You and your forefathers have devastated the balance of this world," he said in a voice that was not his, but ultimately was. "And now you shall pay the ultimate price!" He swung his arms to the side and stopped himself just before the final blow. He let the Avatar State dissipate.
"Even with all the power in the world, you are still weak." Ozai struck.
Aang sensed his movements and encased his hands in rock. He put his hands on the Fire Lord's head and heart, and let his power wash over them. Katara had said his bending could be taken away.
He opened himself and was almost overcome by Ozai's spirit, but fought against it. He heard the turtle lion's words as he explained the Avatar's power and finally overcame it. Pushing his own spirit onto Ozai he found the link between his spirit and the earth and severed it.
"What did you do?" Ozai said, unable to stand.
"I took away your bending, so you won't be able to terrorize anyone with it ever again. And no one will be able to heal it or give it back. All things are connected, but I've severed you from both this world and the spirit world. You will wander in life and in death."
Ozai tried again to stand and fell. Aang gathered his strength and ordered the waters to put out the fires the Air Ships had wrought.
***********************************************
The red glow of the comet finally dissipated and the color of the sky was dark. Somehow Mai had thought something cosmic would happen, but nothing did.
"I have great news!" The dogman announced. "The war is over! Now, we can take the Agni-Mizong to the rest of the world!"
---I had Katara 'healing' away Azula's bending before I saw the end of the 3rd season, so I had to improvise. As you can see, writing about war really isn't my thing and because everything can't be fixed in one to four episodes my Book 3 ended a little more bitter sweetly.
