“Gentlemen,” Egon was wide-awake and already up and dressed. He was the only one. The others were still cocooned under their bedding. “Get up. It’s time we discussed the details of Alice’s spell. There are several things that need to be acquired to make this successful.”
The three sleeping men groaned. Ray got up first, donning a robe and heading for the bathroom. Winston and Peter barely moved. Egon’s eyes narrowed. He exited the room without another word. Winston had opened his eyes just in time to see the physicist’s expression. He glanced over at Peter to see if he saw it too. The only thing Peter could’ve seen was the insides of his own eyelids. Winston smiled devilishly, and got out of bed. He quietly left the room.
Out in the hallway, he found Egon staring at his watch. “Whatcha up to, Egon?”
Egon smiled without looking up and began counting backward. “Three . . . two . . . one . . .”
“AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Winston laughed out loud. “Slimer?”
“Naturally.”
An hour later, all four men were up and dressed, although Peter was still scowling and threatening to send Slimer and Egon into another dimension. Alice came down from the guest room soon after the men were gathered in the rec room. She found them lounging comfortably, each with a mug of coffee in his hand. A fifth steaming mug sat on the table, waiting for her. She sat on the loveseat next to Ray.
“Good morning.”
“Hi Alice,” Ray beamed. “Sleep well?”
“Yes. Thank you.” She and Ray smiled at each other. The look they exchanged was more than just a little friendly. Egon cleared his throat loudly. The pair snapped out of their daze and stared at him, red-faced.
“We are ready to discuss your spell whenever you are.”
Alice bowed her head a little and tried to compose herself from the embarrassment. “Yes. Right. Well, there are things that I will need to make this work. First, I need some of that positive slime.”
“How much?” Egon asked.
“Oh, maybe about two gallons?”
Egon looked at Ray who nodded. They turned to look at Alice. “Done,” Ray said.
“All right. I also need the PKE readings for Vinz Clortho and Zuul.”
“I have them here.” Egon handed a slip of paper to her.
“Okay. I also need the biorhythm readings for Dana and Louis.”
Ray looked surprised and then despondent. “Oh no. I don’t think we’ve ever taken them.”
Egon walked over to the bookshelf and took a notepad. He scratched something on a blank page then ripped it out and handed it to Alice. “Here you are.”
The other threeked ked at him in shock. Egon smiled. “I believe in being prepared. I have memorized the biorhythms for everyone we care about.” Ray beamed in admiration at his friend.
Alice tucked the slips of paper into her pocket and leaned forward to grab her mug and took a swig of coffee. “Thank you for the coffee.” She drained her mug and sat it on the table. She leaned back against the cushions and sighed. “Thank you for everything, actually. You don’t know how much it means to me that you’ve taken care of me. You’re all such good friends.”
“Think nothing of it,” Egon replied. “We were happy to do it. We would never want anything to happen to you.”
“I know. And I will not let anything happen to Dana or Louis either. And I think I know how to guarantee that. I’ve invited a couple guests to help us with this.”
“Oh?” The others looked at the physicist who had been the most knowledgeable about Alice’s plans. Egon was as surprised as they were. “Like who?”
The doorbell rang.
“That would be them now.”
The four men exchanged confused looks. Peter then got to his feet and headed for the firepole. He slid down and ran to the door. “Yeah! I’m coming!” The person rang the bell incessantly. When he opened the door, he found a terrified Rosa Sanchez standing in the doorway, holding baby Oscar. Peter blinked a few times and moved to let her in. She practically ran inside, and he shut the door behind them.
“Hey!” came a high-pitched voice from behind the door. Peter opened the door again. He found a very pretty, tall blond standing there. “Hi. You must be Peter. I guess I should thank you for taking Dana away from Louis.” Peter gave her an incredulous look as she brushed past him.
Alice came down the stairs and greeted the two women. “Hello, ladies. I’m glad you could come. I know you both understand the danger, and we appreciate your willingness to help.”
“Alice, what are they doing here?” Ray whispered.
“They are here to help us fight.”
“We can’t allow that. Rosa has a family, and . . . well, I don’t even know who she is!”
“Sure you do Pete,” Ray interrupted. “That’s Pauline. Remember? She was Louis’s girlfriend back during the whole Gozer thing.”
Peter thought back for a moment and then had a brief image of a tall, leggy blond crying with her arms around Louis at the hospital. “Right. Okay, so what possible good will it do to put them in danger?”
“They are here because they love Oscar and Louis. They will use the helmets that Egon and Ray have constructed to project positive thoughts to them so that their consciousness will come further forward. I spoke to Lois, and she says Oscar is behaving strangely. I believe that whatever is in him is trying to take over. The positive slime and the positive thoughts from their loved ones should help.”
“Well, what about Dana?”
“Dana? Well, I thought that you would be her loved one.” Alice smiled affectionately at Peter.
He beamed back at her, instantly grateful for a chance to be more involved in helping Dana.
“So,” Egon said. “Once their hosts are no longer docile, the demons should be off balance enough for us to pull them apart from the humans, much like how we separated Peter and Wat. I have their biorhythms and the demon PKE readings. I’ve had to deduce the readings for what’s inside of Oscar from his parents, but I am certain that my calculations are correct. I’ll double check now to make certain. The demon energy is stronger in him now.” He held up his PKE meter. “Yes. The readings are different.” He took out a calculator and made some notes. “Okay, my calculations were accurate.”
“So this will work?” Winston sounded more hopeful than before.
Egon smiled. “The theory is sound.” The men all smiled and set off to prepare. Ray and Egon went upstairs to fit Pauline, Rosa and Peter with psycho-projection helmets. Winston went to the basement with Slimer to put the spud into the containment unit to bring out Stay-Puft. They had developed a modified trap that would be big enough to hold the marshmallow man for a long time while they waited for the opportune time to release him.
Once all was complete, Egon brought the modified proton packs into the garage. There were three of them. Winston’s was set to free Dana, Ray would free Louis, and Egon would free Oscar, as he was most eped ped to adjust the pack if necessary. Peter had an unmodified pack to hit the terror dogs once they were released.
Alice went over the spell again and again, making sure she knew it well. It was a holding spell to keep the terror dogs from attacking while they were being wrenched from their hosts.
It would work. It had to.
If ever any of them needed a sign that things would be okay, they got it then. The front door of the firehouse opened, and there stood Janine. “Hey guys. I’m home.” She smiled broadly at them, and slowly ambled over to the stunned group.
