Episode 17 - In The Open
---------
The beach was a nice change of scenery. After drawing so much attention during their field trips Hakoda and Sokka decided it would be smart to find another hideout. Thanks to the large war balloon they were able to relocate fairly easily to Ember Island.
Katara would have been excited to see Zuko's childhood home, but the group had distanced themselves from her. She hadn't yet told her father about her secret, and she'd been avoiding Zuko who tried to be at her side every moment he wasn't teaching Aang new bending moves. She sat in the surf and let the waves wash over her feet and agonized over it.
"You should have been honest with me," Sokka said as he plopped down next to her in the sand.
"What good would it have done? I didn't think I would ever see him again." She wrapped her arms around her knees so she could hide her face.
"I would have understood. You wouldn't have been alone."
"I'm more alone now than ever." Katara squeezed her eyes shut.
"No, you're not," Sokka said angrily. "Do you really think we would all just turn our backs on you? They're just uneasy because they don't know how to act or what to say. You're my sister, and this isn't exactly a normal way of life. Things are going to happen that will change us. This is just one of those things."
"It's just one of those things where I have a baby whose father is married to someone else?" Katara laughed in spite of the absurdity.
"Well, yeah," Sokka laughed too. "Do you love him?"
Katara let a few moments pass. Finally she nodded.
"He is a prince. Does he plan to marry you too?"
"I don't know. I've been avoiding him because I'm afraid to bring it up," she admitted. "I'm afraid to talk to him. Or anyone."
"You don't have to say yes to a three way marriage just because you don't want this stigma. We can work things out. I know Gloomy Girl probably won't be happy about this when she finds out."
Katara cringed. "Mai isn't really a problem."
"What do you mean?"
"Mai was in Ba-hai too, remember?"
"Yeah, so?"
Katara gave him a look until finally his eyes widened. "Oh," he said. Then, "I really need to have a longer talk with Zuko about girls. He's been holding out on me."
Katara couldn't help a smile and playfully splashed her brother with ocean water.
"So, what do you want to do?"
"I don't know. Assuming we survive this war I always thought we would go back to our village. Now that we've had contact with the Northern Water Tribe it will flourish. But I would never have a normal life there. Not after this." Her hand went to her stomach.
"No one would judge you, Katara."
"It's not that," she paused for a breath. "I just don't think I could have a relationship with anyone else."
Sokka put an arm around her and pulled her close.
"I know it's not easy, but you don't have to decide anything right this moment, and when you do you'll have my support."
"Thanks, Sokka." Katara threw her arms around him for a hug.
They were joined by several others and Sokka went to play in the water with Suki. When she saw Zuko coming towards the beach she got up and headed back to the house, but suddenly she felt a hand on her arm.
"What are you doing?" Katara demanded. Zuko dragged her behind the house out of sight. "Zuko!" she hissed so she wouldn't alert the others.
"You're behaving like a child and I'm going to treat you like one," he said furiously. He sat on a bench against the house, pulling her across his lap. A thrill of fear and excitement went through her and she struggled.
"You can't do this!" She tried to roll off his lap but an iron arm lay across her back. She felt her white bindings slide over her bottom and then heard a sharp smack. The sting stilled her and she felt her body burn in humiliation.
Another crack and sting across her bottom made her gasp. Her muscles clenched and her body flushed. Another and another and the burn was intense, but not just on her rear end. He stopped and she wriggled, wanting to feel it again, and when she realized what she was doing she stilled again, hoping her humiliation would suffocate her before she had to look him in the eyes.
"Katara?" he whispered. His hand slid over her burning cheeks and his fingers slid easily between her wet thighs.
"Katara," he said again, his voice full of anguish. Emboldened she moved, pushing herself up and straddled him. "I should have known you would like that. You can't keep doing this to me," he said slowly.
Katara braced her hands on the back of the house. Zuko groaned and she swayed, grinding her hips against his. The growl he let out rumbled through her and as she watched his face the anger slid away. He was hard beneath her and she watched his expression focus, strain, and she knew he was losing his control.
She ran her fingers through his hair, which was getting shaggy, and kissed him. She drew back, giving another forward thrust, and saw the moment his control broke. She was on the ground and he was inside her before her next gasp. It had been so long since their last time together and he filled her to the stretching point, his movements frantic and hard. His fingers dug into her hips and Katara relished it, needed it, needed to know that he wanted her.
She was filled with power and each harsh thrust heightened until she screamed in climax. Zuko's hand pressed over her mouth and she let her screams vibrate into his palm until her body stopped quivering and the energy started to build again. His rhythm didn't slow until finally she felt him tense and release deep inside her, cursing as he did.
Katara was exuberant. Zuko was here. He was helping Aang. He'd done everything in his power to teach him how to fire bend. She could not keep believing that he was using her. No matter what the consequences were, or how ashamed her family was, or how weird it would be with Mai, she knew she belonged to Zuko. Everything in her screamed for him.
His head was down and minutes passed while she listened to him breathe. His weight lifted from her, but he avoided looking at her and her heart fell.
He handed her the discarded swimwear and donned his own.
"Zuko?" Katara reached for him, but he grabbed her hand and fingered the red disk he'd made for her hanging from her wrist.
"I hope you got what you wanted," he whispered and then walked toward the others.
Katara's chest swelled with rejection and the pain sank her to the ground.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The island was buzzing with news of The Ember Island Players and a play about how the Fire Lord would defeat the Avatar. Back in their Fire Nation clothing everyone trooped to the theater to see it. Katara wore Zuko's necklace in place of her mothers, unsure why she chose to do so.
"Hey," Toph said as they were walking. "It's cool about you and Zuko. I just thought you should know that."
"You really think so?"
"Sure. It makes sense. If it had been planned it would be a great political move."
"Er...thanks, Toph."
They sat in the back of the theater and watched in horror as the first part of their adventure played out before them. Aang was played by a bubbly girl, Toph an eight foot barbarian, and Katara by a middle aged crybaby. By intermission most of them had sunk down in their seats with red, embarrassed faces.
Toph hooted in amusement along with Teo and The Duke. Haru sat with his arms crossed and a sour look on his face. Hakoda was enthralled and every few minutes he asked, "Did you really do that? Did that really happen?"
Katara snuck out onto a balcony to get some air. There had been some tender scenes between the Katara and Zuko characters that were a little too close to the truth.
"I never saw it coming," said Aang. He joined her on the balcony and leaned against the rail. "I should have told you."
"Told me what?" Katara said uncomfortably.
"Told you that I loved you. I don't know why, but it's easy to say it now." He looked out across the sand instead of at her.
"I'm sorry, Aang. I didn't plan any of this."
"I know. I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed. And a little heartbroken. But, I know I should have done something about it sooner, and that it's not your fault." He sighed and finally turned to look at her, a mixture of sadness and a maturity beyond his years in his eyes.
"If it had happened a different way I might not have a fire bending teacher. I honestly couldn't say which I'd rather have happened. I'll always be there for you," he said and hugged her. Then he released her and walked back inside.
Katara suppressed the urge to cry and pounded the railing with her fist as she remembered her teary portrayal on the stage. Strong arms surrounded her and she relaxed.
"Are you okay?" Zuko asked.
Then she couldn't stop the tears and she tried to tear away from him, but he was too strong. He held her against him until she stopped crying.
"What do you want from me, Zuko?"
"The real question is what you want from me," he said.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The atmosphere was tangibly darkened as the group walked back to the summer house. There was no way the Ember Island Players could have known there was a baby on the way, but it had been on stage just the same. Then the Fire Lord engulfed them all in flames for the final act.
Zuko built a small fire on the beach and several of the others gathered around it. Once again no one seemed to want to talk to Katara and she felt alienated. Hakoda came to stand beside her and she faced him. He put his hands on her arms and asked the same question he'd been asking all night. "Is it true?"
Katara nodded, terrified of what he would say next.
He pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly. Katara felt relief ease her tension, then he said, "Don't worry. Everything will be fine when we get you home."
Everyone was so quiet the crackle of the fire seemed loud.
"Home?"
"Of course. You can't fight in your condition. It's time you went home."
She'd expected some sort of outrage, a chastising, or general disapproval, but sweeping it under the rug had never occurred to her.
Zuko's voice was a mixture of steel and respect. "Katara's place is here, with her family."
Hakoda's eyes flashed anger. "We are her family," he said sternly. "And we belong in the Southern Waters. You can't seriously expect her to stay here with you and your wife." Her father's voice was full of disgust, but her stomach did flips at Zuko's claim.
Her father backed up defensively as Zuko strode forward to see Katara's face. The rest were quiet and watching.
"Katara, this nation needs you."
"You can't put all that weight on her shoulders. You will be Fire Lord and this Nation is your problem. She's helped you MORE than enough."
Katara cringed at her father's vulgar implication. Zuko sighed audibly.
"Katara, I need you. You are part of my strength and hope," he rephrased softly. His eyes were pleading and Katara's heart beat for him. She needed to hear these words so badly. "I can't do this without you and our child."
Hakoda snorted in disgust. "You'll have plenty of children without her."
Katara stared at her father in shock. "Are you suggesting my child doesn't need his or her father?"
"Katara…"
"At least he wants his children," she said to a round of gasps. "I have been to every region of every nation. I have fought in wars, won and lost, and seen friends die in battle. I raised my own army, saved entire villages, and healed as many as I could. I am not a child."
"I know…"
"Zuko chose to turn against his family's decisions in order to end this war. Do you understand that? His choices affect every nation, and you're mocking him because I was his choice and he wants our children here with him."
"Two wives, Katara…" Sokka put a hand on his father's shoulder before he could continue.
"It is not unheard of, Dad. Even in the water tribes," he said gently.
Hakoda looked at his son, at Zuko, and back to Katara. "You're right. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have assumed this wasn't your choice. Forgive me, Katara."
It was too hard to stay mad. "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings," she said and hugged her father. He hugged her back.
*********************************************************
The house was quiet except for the bull frog noises and the sound of the waves. Katara tip toed from her room. Zuko's door was open and she peeked in. He lay on his back, hands behind his head, eyes to the ceiling. He looked over at her and she felt pierced.
She wished she could just crawl into his bed and feeling vulnerable she stepped into his room. He took her in, looked at every visible inch of her, but it wasn't sexual and she felt exposed.
"Did you heal them?" he asked.
"Heal what?"
"The bruises."
She had thought nothing of the few bruises at her hips. Her back had been scratched up from the ground and she'd healed that too. She thought back to how upset he was when he saw her bruises in Ba-sing-se. Was that why he was so angry now?
"Zuko, they didn’t hurt."
He glared at her.
"Why is this such a big deal?"
"Because it's something my father would do."
"You didn't hurt me on purpose." He look away from her, his expression stone. Katara crossed the room to his bed. "I don't know your father except by this war, but I know you. You wouldn't hurt me on purpose." She looked up at the ceiling as she said, "I enjoy the things you do to me."
Taking a deep breath to steady herself she continued, "I love you."
He looked at her, his eyes narrowed, but he didn't answer.
Losing her nerve Katara turned and ran to the door, but somehow it was already closed. Zuko's hand rested on it, his presence loomed behind her.
"I love you too," he said. "Stay."
His hand fell from the door, giving her a choice. Katara turned slowly, her heart in her eyes.

The Fire Fountain City was roaring with revelers and once again Mai was getting ointment treatment by one of the sisters. This time Ty Lee was getting the same treatment. After being groped by one of the handlers she decided it would be better to put on a show than have the dogman decide she was scrap. When her performance improved he sang her praises and rewarded them with clothes that matched the ones the sister's wore.
"My aura is turning greyish," Ty Lee moaned. "Just like this outfit. I don't know if I can keep doing this."
"You did well today. I don't know why you're complaining," said Jin Wu, who was tending to her tattoo.
"My skin is completely ruined," she cried and chirped every time Jin Wu's fingers touched her sore shoulder.
"You will grow to like it," said the other sister, Yun Qu. She finished her work and Mai put a hand over Ty Lee's.
"We'll get out of this," she said, but she had no idea how they would get out. With each being held hostage for the other, there was no way they could both escape and Mai was getting sick. She would feel better after throwing up, but inevitably the sickness returned.
One of the boys who had been fighting, Huo, had disappeared. They knew he would after losing his last fight so horrifically. Soon after Chiu had died in a fight. They were down to the sisters, and Mai and Ty-Lee.
