Chapter 13
Once they arrived at the palace the guards unfettered Sokka and Aang leaving only their hands bound. They were escorted with flames and spears inside palace and ushered down a hallway to a room full of men and a few women. Once inside they were forced to kneel in front of a wall of fire. Zuko dragged Katara in by the arm and forced her to kneel slightly behind and to the left of him as he dropped to one knee as well.
Katara looked around. Azula has lowered herself beside Zuko and everyone else who’d been allowed into the room was now bowing as well.
A rumbling voice called out, “Rise my children. You have done well.”
Zuko and Azula stood. Katara looked over to Sokka and Aang. That was the voice of the Fire Lord. A shadow stood behind the flames and it was slowly coming closer. Hours after they originally planned, they were finally coming face to face with the Fire Lord.
Fire Lord Ozai stepped through the flames and looked at his guest, “Greetings Avatar, Waterbender, Oaf.”
The trio remained silent.
“What have you nothing to say to me after invading my country, breaking into my home looking for me, and attempting to flood my city? I would imagine you would have plenty of words after going through so much effort,” Ozai mused.
He waited for a response then demanded, “Speak Avatar, while you still have your tongue.”
Aang was unsure of what to say but then he remembered Toph’s advice. Be like rock. Face it head on. He lifted his head, “If you were so interested in what I had to say why did you hide from me during the eclipse?”
“If you had to say so much why didn’t you find me?” Ozai quipped merrily.
“I’m here now, so tell me Avatar what did you have to say? I’m sure you had some sort of grand speech planned about the so called good of the world, the Fire Nation is evil and so on. So tell me little boy, what did you have to say?” Ozai said advancing on Aang with a fireball in his hand as big as the boy’s head.
Katara inhaled and blew a whiff of freezing air towards the flaming globe in the Fire Lord’s hand. The cold air condensed and extinguished it, “Leave him alone. I’m the one who makes speeches.”
Several people in the room gasped and Sokka groaned, “Why of all things have I not created some type of portable fire putting out thing?” as the Fire Lord walked over to his sister.
“What do we have here?” Ozai said sliding his hand around her neck and forcing her chin upwards. “Do you not know your place little girl?”
“I know my place very well, Fire Lord. It’s you who has forgotten yours and seeks to spread your trash all over the world,” Katara said angrily.
Ozai laughed and patted her head, “You’ve got guts peasant. I like that. I haven’t been this amused in years. What is your name?”
“My name is Katara,” she stated defiantly.
“Well Katara, you do realize how foolish it is to disrespect a man in his own home?” Ozai chuckled.
“If you untie me and have one of your lackeys fetch a pitcher of water, I’ll be happy to do more than that,” she replied.
Sokka shook his head. That was his sister all right, more temper than brains. If she was going to be fried to a crisp he may as well be charred right alongside her. At least if he were dead he wouldn’t feel guilty for not being able to protect her, “Since we’re making request, I’d like a nicely sharpened boomerang. They work wonders for decapitation. Can someone untie me too? I’m sure I’ll need to throw it with both hands to take off a head as big as yours.”
Azula smiled as the smoke began to furl beneath her father’s nostrils. Zuko gripped Katara’s shoulder harder. Several people in the room openly gaped at their blatant disrespect.
To their surprise the Fire Lord laughed, “I can see why my children and soldiers had such a hard time capturing you. Tell me, where is the fourth member of your motley crew? I’ve been told a little blind girl is the one who folded my doors like rice paper.”
“No clue, but even if we did know, we probably wouldn’t tell you,” Sokka deadpanned.
Ozai turned his attentions to him, “Probably, not definitely? I would have thought your bond was stronger?”
Sokka shrugged awkwardly causing his chains to rattle with the motion, “Our bond is plenty strong. I said probably because depending on where she was, I might tell you. Like if she were behind you, I’d probably tell you to look out behind you because most people assume it’s a diversion and never do. But since I have no idea where she is, I can’t tell you.”
“What about you Avatar? Do you share the same opinion as your friend?” Ozai asked intrigued. The boy had made a valid point.
“No, I would never tell you where Toph was even if I did know. But I don’t so I can’t tell you. But if I did I wouldn’t anyway,” Aang said channeling Bumi’s confusing speech patterns.
“I see. Girl, where is she?” Ozai asked.
“My name is Katara,” she ground out. “If I know Toph, she’s probably beneath the island trying to figure out the best way to cause an earthquake and make the volcano erupt. Other than that, I really have no idea of where she is.”
“Really, so you think your little friend is somewhere beneath my island trying to destroy it from within?” Ozai asked furrowing his brow. It was a good idea, one that he couldn’t discount since the brat had been able to bend metal.
“We tend to destroy things from within,” Sokka said matter-of-factly. “It’s too bad your daughter stole our idea after we broke her drill. Otherwise this place would be known as New Ba Sing Se.”
Ozai stroked his goatee, “Perhaps you are right. Maybe I should try the same approach. Instead of turning the Avatar into a mole worm and you two into ashes, I should use you against your own supporters. I wonder if a tour of the Earth Kingdom would flush out all of your friends. I’m sure someone will try to rescue you.”
“Father that is an excellent idea. Their little group is very tight knit. You can use the Water Tribe siblings to control the Avatar. Someone is always popping up to help them so I’m sure we can crush the resistance by the end of the summer,” Zuko said respectfully.
Ozai looked at Zuko, “I do not need your flattery, boy. Now tell me, why is this peasant wearing your robe?”
