As Professor Avalon predicted, learning ice magic proved to be a unique challenge in adjusting her way of thinking. Layla repeatedly found herself attempting to perform ice magic as though it were merely a matter of tweaking her skills with water magic. Every time she tried it she found herself either molding water into shape and then struggling to freeze it while holding it in that form, or creating a chunk of ice and then either melting it or shattering it attempting to reform it to her will. By the end of the class the water fairy had a pounding headache.
Over dinner she discovered that other elements seemed to be conspiring against her as well. Out of the other five Winx girls' boyfriends only three were able to make it for the skating party on Friday night. It turned out that Timmy and Helia had drawn short straw on the guard duty rotation roster that weekend and wouldn't be able to come. That meant Flora and Tecna would either be staying home or going without dates.
"What about you Layla?" Musa asked. "Is Nabu gonna be coming with?"
Layla hung her head guiltily.
"Actually I haven't gotten around to asking him yet."
Stella looked scandalized.
"Well you better ask him soon! If you wait too long he might get the idea that you don't really want him there."
*Score one more for Stella's idea of tact,* Layla thought as she noticed the volume level of conversation in their immediate vicinity dropping off.
"Don't worry. I plan on calling him tonight after dinner."
Once back at the dorm room Layla pulled out her phone and dialed up her boyfriend.
"Hey Nabu. What're you up too?"
"Oh, not much. I'm glad you called. Listen Layla, my parents are throwing this big gala event Friday night in honor of some visiting dignitary and I was wondering if you'd like to attend as my guest?"
Layla's eyes went a little bit wide upon hearing that.
"Wait, did you say Friday night? At what time?"
"From seven to midnight."
A troubled look crossed the dark-skinned princess's face as she started to realize where this conversation was heading.
"I'm afraid I can't make it. I was actually calling to ask you if you'd like to go out skating with me and the gang. My friends and I are going down to the Colosseum Friday night at eight. We'd love to have you join us. Sky, Brandon and Riven are gonna be there too."
"Hmm... A skating party vs. a political function. That's a tough choice. I'd love to come, but unfortunately my folks are expecting me to be there. Why don't you let your friends go without you and come join me? I know it's not exactly a skating party but there'll be music and dancing. We could have a lot of fun just being together."
Layla winced at the sincerity in the prince's voice.
"I'm sorry, I can't. It's not just us and our boyfriends going. The Trix are gonna be there too."
"The Trix? Who're they again?"
Layla clutched her phone a little tighter.
"You know. Icy, Darcy and Stormy?"
"Those three? The ones who were working for Baltor? Why would you want to hang out with them?"
The water fairy looked up as she heard the door open and waved at Musa as she walked into the room.
"You heard about how they lost their memories and were readmitted to Cloud Tower, right? Well the gang and I are trying a bit of an outreach program to try to get them to see things a bit differently. We're hoping if they have some friends to act as positive role models they might not turn out so bad this time around."
"Well that's a noble thing to do, but there's six of you and only three of them, right? Why don't you let your friends take the Trix out skating without you and come join me instead?"
Musa watched the pained expression cross Layla's face as she sat down on her bed opposite and pulled up her legs to wait.
"I can't do that. This whole thing was my idea in the first place, and I'm the one that invited them. I can't just blow them off like that. If I don't go it'll make a really bad impression and maybe ruin any chance we have of reaching them. I've got to be there."
"I guess you're really stuck for it then. I'm sorry I can't join you. Listen, I'm free all day Saturday. Why don't we get together and do something then?"
A look of relief broke out on Layla's face.
"Sounds great. Let's talk about it tomorrow night and see what we can come up with, okay?"
"Sounds good. Talk to you then. Love you Layla."
A sappy smile spread across her face.
"Love you too Nabu."
Musa was sitting with her chin propped on her knee and her arms wrapped around her legs as Layla hung up the phone.
"So no Nabu Friday night, huh?"
Layla shook her head as she set her phone on the nightstand.
"His parents are throwing a big bash and they expect him to be there."
Musa gave her a wry smirk.
"Somehow I doubt Icy's gonna be too upset about that, and maybe you won't either."
Layla shut her eyes and turned her head away.
"It's not like that, okay?"
Musa leaned back and propped her arms behind her.
"Girl, you can keep denying if you want but that witch is definitely getting under your skin. You don't just need to be there Friday night, you want to be there. Look, I'm not gonna try to tell ya what to do, but don't shut your eyes to what's going on just because it feels good, okay? Even if Icy's on the level here she's still dangerous and obsessive. If she even thinks the two of you got somethin' special going on she won't let go until the whole thing blows up in your faces. All I'm sayin' is don't let her take you down with her, okay? I'm here for ya if you need me. We all are."
Layla felt a grateful smile spread across her face.
"Thanks Musa. That means a lot to me. Honestly, I don't know what to make of all this. It feels wonderful and scary all at the same time. I hate to admit it but Icy really does something for me. I just... I really want to understand what it is. It's a feeling I don't get from you guys or Nabu or anyone else. When I'm around her I feel like I'm in over my head and it's still not enough."
Musa sat up and planted her hands on the edge of the mattress between her knees.
"Wow. Whatever it is, it sounds like you've really got it bad."
Layla nodded with a sad smile. Musa got up and walked over to sit down beside her, placing a comforting arm around the black girl's shoulders.
"Like I told ya Saturday, I'm here for ya. I'm on your side, no matter what. You do what you gotta do girl, and I'll be there to catch you when you fall, whichever way you fall."
Layla sniffed and laid her head on her friend's shoulder.
"I guess it really is a hopeless situation, isn't it?"
Musa gave her a squeeze.
"Nothing's ever hopeless when your friends are by your side. You and Icy, I just don't ever see that working, but that doesn't mean something good won't come out of this. You've got wings for a reason girl. Friday night's gonna be your time to fly."
